How to avoid getting ganked in a freighter: Don't fly a freighter.
How to significantly reduce the risk of receiving suprise buttsex with your freighter;
a) avoid frequently bumped areas
b) webbing alt
c) fly with you buddy who is also in a freighter but more likely to get ganked (more expensive cargo, less tank, combination)

Big groups have more people, so can gank more using cheaper ships.
I still wonder if this is not the thing CCP actually wanted.

I heard, but don't know if it is true,for each plex you have in your cargo hold you get a 3% buff to ehp.
get enough of them in there and they won't be able to gank you.

Yes. Freighter pilots can mail me in-game if they are interested in getting involved with alliance logistics. Having a mining permit is good. Being blue to us is better.

- fly with tank
- use a webber
I cargo scan easily up to 1000 freighters per day on my alts and when we are lucky we have one guy that is actually worth it. You cant patch stupidity. 20b freighter autopiloting not even with tank fitted? C'mon guys |

What baffles me is why someone thinks that's okay. You're hauling that much and not taking some simple precautions? You deserve to get exploded.

The freighter ganks have doubled as a response to freighters getting such a significant ehp buff.

What happened was CCP made changes that made ganking harder (most significantly the insurance changes), which meant gankers got much more organised than they used to be.
Ganking solo isn't much fun, so people did it for a little while then moved on. Ganking in big fleets, however, is hilariously fun and so people keep doing it longer as a result.
Freighter pilots need to learn that freighters are not ships suitable for solo play.
I don't undock my PVP fit Kronos when solo unless I am able to escalate. And between neuts, guns, cap injectors and a massive active tank, it can protect itself far better than a freighter can.
Until the freighter pilots learn this, CODE. will continue to teach them expensive lessons.
