HAH! Eve has absolutely NO dual monitor support. This has been repeatedly asked for for years with no support from CCP.
You can run Eve in a window on a second monitor (losing almost all of your 3D acceleration), but that is a function of Windows. Not Eve.

When I take screenshots with the client loaded on my secondary display it always comes out as a thin black line. Any ideas why?

Great idea, especially since there's so much UI on the screen that it sometimes makes it hard to see/play!

I am thinking dual monitors to the point of "ohh lets look at that pritty ship" and "ohh lets look at its t1 variant next door" ... AT THE SAME TIME ... :) One monitor would be "primary" and second monitor would be "secondary" (can be set to a background and used for windows also) This would be awsome in pvp where i can use my whole widescreen laptop screen, and not have annoying other stuff in my way. -YARR... -Lance "If engineers built buildings the way (microsoft) programmers write programs, the first woodpecker that came along would destroy civilization!" This is because of hardware acceleration. Turn that off for that output and youll be able to take screenies (but lose performance)

Dual monitor support would rock for everyone. Being able to put things on a second monitor would be great. I mean if your lowsec or warring you can put up local and gang on the other window if your doing market and that kind of thing you can put that up there...*drools* Would also be worth me training targeting higher if we could move the overview to the second monitor. Becuase as it stands when I lock my max targets the last one is next to the edge were as if the overview was on another screen would free up space.
Also not anything to do with dual monitor but if we had the option of spliting off gang and drones from the overview would be great.

Eve actually did support multi-monitors 2 or 3 years ago and had it as an option in the gfx setup, best config was 3 but it was very buggy at the time so the base code for it is already in (unless it got stripped)
3x monitor support for a single client can be had through a bit of kit made by matrox, wee black box that splits the vga signal so u kinna have uber widescreen eve. But multi monitor with ui support would be sweet. Clear up the HUD area during combat so there is no need to close/minimise chat windows etc. ........

I would be happy just to maximise to screen - at the moment most of us are running windowed mode and using evemon to do that. Just make a maximise to screen option in the graphics controls and I'd be happier.
I personally think the FPS would drop through the floor for most people if they actually made it use 2 monitors.

Bumping! Have run dual setups for a year now, and this game CRAVES dual monitor support.
How about having the ship, the control buttons and overview on one monitor, and the ability to put chat windows, markets, map, show info boxes etc etc etc on the other monitor? Or better yet just allow the player to arrange it as he sees fit - maybe slide the overview over there, put those menu buttons down here... you get the idea.
Please give us some real dual-monitor support! ________

There seems to be most demand for dual monitor support where you can stick all the windows cluttering your flight experience. Let's start with that. Then make all elements positionable, i.e. overview, market, chat channels, drone interface, gang, map, etc.

I routinely run two eve clients on my two monitors, without a considerable slowdown. The trick is to run in Horizontal Span mode. This gets rid of the whole primary/secondary problem in windows, as they are treated as the same to windows (splitting is done in the driver/card). This works great for two clients on two monitors, but can't really scale past that. The Triplehead2go works for 3.
All they really need to do is an option to move the center of focus. If there was a way to move the center of focus to say 25%left, or 25% right, instead of just 50%, it would allow us to span it across both screens, and just move all the modal windows to the right screen, next to the overview, withough splitting the ship/modules in half.

That could also be used by people that are running EVE on very wide-screen monitors. They could clutter one side of the monitor with the static windows and then have the space view having its center somewhere else on the screen so that they can still see what is going on all the sides of the warp tunnel. ----- http://games.chruker.dk/eve_online ----- Top 3 wishes: 1: No daily downtime. 2: Updated dump of the database. 3: An update of the ingame browser, to fix ex: slow tables. |

In game industry you MUST know these 3 rules: 1-Cheat, 2-Cheat!, 3- hmm? oh ! almost forgot! C-H-E-A-T !!!!!!
Do NOT develop fency dual screen support! You already can play on Dual screen with the actual build ! you just need to run the game on high resolution... FPS is just fine on my x1800 (Even if Ati is a piece of crap... )
But it cause a mojor problem! ship is splitted!? and HUD too! Damn! Is it that complicated to figure out !?
The problem is stupid and there is 2 solutions: a complicated and expensive one, Then the simple and "why didn't we tough about that ourself?" one.
Solution 1- complicated $$$ Split the Main interface in a Dual viewport interface that you can easyly slide from left to right! , has in 3Dmax, Maya... But that could be tricky if you have engine limitation... You would need good programming ressources (lot of time and $$$) if your engine core has no such support at all.
Solution 2- Simple! Instead of wasting money in rewriting the engine Core, just use the already integrated panel on the left side. Make it easy to expend from left to right by mouse drag or a button. That panel may not be ideal for enabling a 3D render, BUT since it's scripting already support content update( flashing icons and update of the wallet...) The Fonctions must already all be there in the engine to support a pre-configured Empty grey panel that when enabled, just take half of one screen. Then the user set the graphic size to one that fit it's dual screen setup.
A GREY PANEL? yep! You just need to change the superposition order of the left panel so that the Chat, market and any other ANNOYING floating windows could be DRAGED OVER!
SIMPLE! No additionnal render cost = no FPS drop. and CHEAP!

...blah blah... settings that only ATI has.
Do you propose that we all switch to ATI graphic cards just to play Eve, missing out on some of the things we enjoy in every other game we play? Geforce cards cannot do what you have suggested.
Even having the ability to change the centre of the view by dragging the GUI to the centre of the primary monitor would help. Then stretching the view across two screens wouldn't split the gui in half. The floating GUI has been asked for many times in the past. If the external view camera was aimed at the GUI, this would give a 'car drivers' view with part of the windscreen across the passenger side. This little used viewing are could then be used to accommodate the windows.
However, unless you use SLI, the FPS of the second screen is usually a lot less. My idea above allows SLI users to have dual monitor support but those of us who use a single graphics card would have a harder time due to the overall FPS drop that the second screen forces. The blanked area would enable us to use the second monitor without the FPS drop since video updates would be limited to what windows were put there rather than the view of space and whatever is flying in it.
Also Mathie, you suggest that dual screen is a cheat but you then suggest a way to do it How is dual screen a cheat if CCP program the ability into the game so everyone can use it?

Edited by: Mahtie on 28/03/2007 23:06:13 My friend, when I say Cheat I'm not talking to players! I'm talking to developper... Let me give you an exemple:
If I have a 3 minute cut scene to do at the end of a game whit 3 characters... Do you sincerly think I will animate the 3 characters during 3 minutes each? For a total of 9 minutes of animation? NO! we'll find a way to use camera angles so the player see all characters in the same camera view as less as possible. so if I hear character 1 talking to character 2 I will make the camera switch between the 2 character instead of have both of them on my camera angle. instead of animating both I will animate short clips for each of them... That is CHEATING.
IN the same fashion, they need to work within their engine limitations and find a cheat, a hack.. THEY need to find a way to work around the problem WHITOUT reprogramming the engine to detects both screens.
******************************************************************* ******************* TO COME BACK ON DUAL SCREEN ******************* *******************************************************************
What I'm telling DEV team, is that their engine must already be able to support a resolution that would fit in the pixel ratio of most standard widescreens and cards. You just need a resolution multiple of 2 screen wide and 1 of height.
So instead of telling the engine what to render on what screen, (wich would mean having the engine to Manage the videocard that manages the screens !?!? )
Just modify what is rendered and where on one single window. So When a player in the settings hit that resolution, starting from the left, the engine render a really light picture half of the width, then the engine would start rendering the heavy 3D on the other half.
No needs to tell the engine what to render on wich screen. Just tell the engine to render the "space" starting at a defined pixel. If you have one screen it makes no sense, but if you got 2 , you can stretch the game on both screens, having your ship and HUD perfectly fitting on one and all the other annoying little windows on the screen that render barely nothing. Little Frame rate loss since half of the pixels are rendering text and static pictures.
For sure, Higher resolutions would need better videocards whit Dual-DVI
You just need to find the better resolution that would fit the engine and most videocard, and use what is already in the engine to save time and momney

My apologies, I misunderstood your intent. I stand corrected.
Cheating from a programming point of view is fine when used as with your cutscene analogy, it's the kind of thing that's used in the movie industry all the time.
However, as a programmer myself, to make changes in this way by hacking and jury rigging is a major no-no. It has to be done properly otherwise the whole thing falls over for some users and causes bigger problems than re-writing the original engine would have done.
Theere are as many players who have been asking for a floating GUI as there have been for dual screen support. This would be an ideal opportunity to make both camps happy.
Allow for the floating GUI with the option to have the camera centred on it and also allow for a parent info window to be opened to provide an opaque backdrop for the other windows (scanner, local and such) and also the overview if necessary. Personally, I find that being able to click on objects behind the overview can get really annoying when you want to target something from the overview in a busy environment, also the fact that a light background and/or target lines makes it hard to read the overview. Both of these make it necessary to move the camera view to remove external view interference. Having it on an opaque backdrop and free from external view interference would be a bonus.

I definitely agree on all counts with the dual monitor UI support ideas. One other thing I haven't seen mentioned would be the ability to run a normal ship view (with or without controls) on one monitor and a zoomed out technical overview layout on the other. I find that I usually fight with the overlay on zoomed out to about 50k or so, and it would be cool to have another monitor showing the closeup view with no controls (ala CTRL-F9), especially for capturing video or entertaining friends watching over your shoulder.

Signed! (again) As I signed before, and even posted own thread about that issue. Atm EVE does not support real dual monitor system. It only extends one window over another monitor. And like others says we need option to move ingame panels outside of main Eve window.
I would also like to point again on main overview issue: when you are in biger gang and or using drones, it is becames too crowded. --

Here is an idea that might help, but might also be very open to hacks: The eve client runs some sort of local IRC server so that normal IRC clients can be configured to connect to it. You only & minimize all the channels you want to connect to in your eve client & them become avalable to ur IRC client. This would mean that all the chat's could be run on a secondard monitor. Other option is secondary Cleint that connects to the main client, that is an cut down eve irc client.
Note: one can do some thing similar atm, via having Eve Log chat to file. The twp problems are: - file changes every time you log in to eve - can not reply to change, only see chat. You need a text view that will see updates to the file on the fly.
got to run now, might update with more info later. enjoy

Just re-upped my account and was immediately reminded of one of my biggest pet peeves about EVE: the appaling lack of real estate on the screen for all these damn windows!
EVE absolutely screams a need for Dual Monitor support. Hell, I came to this forum not really wondering if support existed, but how to enable it. It seemed like a no-brainer that it would already be there. Guess not.
