I'm been swindled on a contract. I've a vindicator for sale. Pvp'er contacted me and said me that he'll buy it at buyout price (1B). He said me that to lower taxes, i've to made a private auction contract to his corp (pvp'er corp), starting bid 1M and buyout of 1B. I know that I'm a noob, but i've done it. Now he has already done a bid, so i can't cancel theauction. But it's a swindle, he'll never take the buyout, so i only want to cancel my contract! This is the chat we had:
PVP'er > hey Decimo Meridio > hi PVP'er > i will take the buyout on your vindicator Decimo Meridio > ok, can we meet in stacmon in 5 minutes? PVP'er > i'm down in 0.0 atm PVP'er > could you setup a private auction for me, can claim it that way Decimo Meridio > ok. give me 5 min ^^ PVP'er > min bid something like a mil, buyout 1 bil. No tax either then PVP'er > needs to be set to my corp by the way. Doesn't work setting it to a player Decimo Meridio > so i set it to pvp'er corp? PVP'er > yes PVP'er > they should change it so you can set it to a player really Decimo Meridio > but yesterday i was able to set a contract to a single person, so where is the problem? PVP'er > with auction it has to be corp PVP'er > as i said ccp really do need to add an option to set it to a player Decimo Meridio > so, if i make a item exchange contract, there are taxes, instead with auction, and you take the buyout, not PVP'er > i can't claim the item exchange from 0.0 Decimo Meridio > ok, i'm in stacmon PVP'er > downside is taxes with auction, so just set min 1 mil, buyout 1 bil PVP'er > got all the officer fittings for it already, just need the ship itself :) PVP'er > are you still here ? Decimo Meridio > yes, done PVP'er > great, i will claim it asap PVP'er > thank you, been wanting this ship for a long time Decimo Meridio > <url=contract:30003794//783325>Vindicator</url> PVP'er > cya
Please, at least I want to cancel my order!

Sucks to be you dude. Even the tutorial warns you not to fall for this kind of thing. Way out is to buy it from yourself. If you have 1 billion out bit him, yo'll pay yourself so the money comes back to you. You'll lose a bit on the tax but won't lose the whole thing.

he cant outbid him, he wrote it as a private auction.
I.E. only that guy and his corp can bid on it. Since its probably a 1 player corp, the guy is screwed. ---------------------------------------- Thou Shalt "Pew Pew" |

You have 6 days. Join a corp in Privateer Alliance, and get them to camp the station where it is. Blow it up when he undocks - get your corp to put him in your address book so you know when he's online. That's... about all I can think of.
That really really is a horrible situation :(

It costs 10k ISK to make a private item exchange. There are no taxes.
You fell for it through greed (imo). Someone offered clearly more than your bpc was worth and you let avarice stand in the way of good judgement.

PVP'er also tried this scam on me a little while ago. My corpmate had someone (possibly the same guy) attempt it with him earlier in the day.
Frankly, if CCP doesn't feel requests for private auctions aren't an exploit, then perhaps everyone should go around trying to use it. It's only going to get worse regardless until CCP closes the loophole that allows it.
Funny how people used to think Escrow was a home for scammers and a new system would fix things. It just goes to show that as long as scams are allowed, people who are too lazy to actually play the game right will continue finding ways to cheat others.

Just use the contracts that are for what you need.
You are NOT auctioning the item to the guy, so what possesses you to create an auction contract?
Use item exchange because it's the one that makes sense.
In eve, you need to suspect everything. Especially if it looks like a duck, and sounds like a duck, and tastes like a duck because it's probably not a hamburger.

So sorry mate...but you have been scammed the legit way.
Someone tried the same on me, almost identical speech about tax and private auction.
I politely told them that if they could afford to buy the rather expensive faction item, then they could afford to pay the tax I also noticed his employ history..1 month old and buying Navy items... They gave me some **** about having sold their main blah blah and were starting out again
I then offered my left nut for them to suck on

This also reminds me of the guy selling a dread invul field...
Now, I'am talking, looking for deals, notice this one in corp(noob corp(yes I know, dirty me)) and well I takeup convo with him. Seem like a nice guy. Now he wanted quick money selling this thing and last time I sold a dg invul they were in the 300-330 range. He says: worth 250-300m? I smile and figure I can possibly make a decent enough markup if they are still up there, seems like they are. At this point I say: Alright I'll take it, contract it to me or do you want me to come meet you for direct trade. Well DTrade aint possible he is out somewhere so I say 'ok contract it then' adding: 'item exchange type' a few seconds later.
Guess what... the contractz wouldnt work for him he would relog and comeback to me later... he never did...

While fooling around with Contracts, I've come across the option to 'delete' them. Try playing around under 'My Contracts', and setting to 'issued by' 'me' 'outstanding' and whatever to get your contract to show up on that window. Right click that, and hopefully you get the 'delete' option. Not on EVE atm, so not really sure.

You can't delete a contract that's in any status other than 'outstanding' - once someone has bid on an auction, it changes status.
Private auctions are not an exploit. If you wanted to sell something to someone from your own corp, or an allied corp and wanted to get the best price you could for it, that's a legitimate use of a private auction.
But never set the minimum bid on an auction to less than the lowest price you're willing to accept. It really is that simple.

this may sound contravercial but you had it coming to you. a guy tryed this with me yesterday and i was chatting away seeing the isk and what i would spend it on in my head filling out the contract and it hit me... *MINUMUM BID OF 1MIL ISK* then it clicked he will put a mil on it and wait the time out, and all my crying in the world wouldnt stop it. up till that point i had not heared of this scam as i havnt really gotten into selling on contract just buying. but +oz of commancence could have saved you, if you lacked it or were to busy thinking isk isk and more isk, yo deserved it in my opinion,

Or hire some mercs and wardec that corp?

Problem is, once they start legislating these things and arbitrating over them they get flooded with vast numbers of endless petitions about it. And at the end of the day things like this can be easily avoided by players.
Never trust a stranger and always look for the trap. If the great offer walks through the door be wary.
Tbh though I'm not sure why ppl don't just use direct trading more often. You put your item in the box, they put their isk in and you can both clearly see what you're getting. And if you don't like it you just don't click ok. For a 1bill trade I'd make the special trip to meet the guy in person.

This sort of thing, in any other game that I have played, would be seen as an exploit and addressed by the devs in short order.
That said, this is Eve. A lot of tremendously sleazy people play this game (no offense sleazebags), and exploit the hyper-complexity of Eve to trick the unimformed (which is the vast majority of the playerbase). It is sad to hear events like this where something so simple is used to rob a player of the profits of months (years?) of gameplay.
Based upon other experiences, this event is likely to lead to the op closing his account and moving on. I'm glad to hear this exploit (and it really is, whether CCP wants to call it that or not) is being dealt with in 1.4. |

Sleazy? Exploit? Umm, no. Eve does not protect you from your own stupidity or inability to play the game. It is exactly this which makes Eve great. ----------

Edited by: Argenton Sayvers on 16/02/2007 13:53:58 Oveur, how exactly do you plan to fix this?
1. You can ruin some of the last useful things left with contracts - "standing-based" auctions that only allow bidders you like (corp / alliance).
2. You can finally introduce taxes to private auctions, reducing the pain stupid people feel because they got scammed trying to evade something that actually exists.
(and ruin contracts for the last remaining people who actually use it)
3. ???
4. You cannot patch human stupidity, so whats your solution?
As for the sploit-criers. Wrong alliance ticker ... The OP tried to "exploit" - by avoiding taxes. Why are you moralists not flaming him? Too bad there arent any taxes though.

Holy hell dude; how on earth did you manage to fall for a scam so extravagantly obvious? Hell, I'm hesitant to even call it a scam; he basically just said "hay can i have that billion isk ship for free" and you said "LOL OK" and now you're going "WTF HAX". I think there are molluscs who wouldn't have fallen for that.

Workaround for this is finding the contract on the list with the character that made it and then drag it into an eve-mail or chat. From there it can be accessed by whoever it was issued to. ___________________________________________________

See, scamming is funny for the best part. It takes some skill to openly scam people out of that much isk, even the most 'innocent'. But as I know a lot of people will agree, the worst part of it is simply that your an alt who doesn't take responsibility for the actions you do. No one can get 'revenge' since you don't leave the stations and you likely have near no skills but contract ones.
That's where the problem is... that where you become a sad player

Those are 4 simple bits of common sense you ignored.
This will be addressed in Revelations 1.4. Till then, this is a valid game mechanic and the only thing I can recommend is that you do as Ionia says.
Sorry, Oveur, but it's another point where CCP "invented" a game mechanics perfectly for scammer when you can do an auction (definition: a BUNCH of people bid for one item where the highest bidder wins) for 1 person and are NOT able to cancel the auction when you figure out it's a scam. I agree. It was poorly implemented. Any auction system should allow you to set a hidden reserve and to cancel the auction if not met. CCP already state they are going to fix it, so implication is it's an exploit and normal exploit rules should apply.
That said, you've got to be a bit dim to fall for such a scam.

Oveur himself stated that its a valid game mechanic. So its not an exploit.
I dont know how many of you frequent sell orders forum, but the general consensus there is that hidden reserves, auctions that get cancelled when the seller wants to etc are extremely lame and need to be fixed.
CCP actually implemented such a system (that has a lot of other problems though) and now everyone is whining for it to be changed into something that is already there: sell orders forum: Hidden reserve (even if you forgot to mention it! You can still say "sorry out of luck, im not selling"), no obligations for either the buyer or the seller etc.
And what would a hidden reserve helped anyway? The problem is that everyone who fell for it thought there are taxes, while in truth, there are no taxes.
How stupid does one need to be to actually set a private auction? Well it happens. How stupid does one need to be to lobby to remove it? It is obviously a tool that has been created for something entirely different then item exchanges (corp / alliance management, especially in 0.0). How many safety stickers do you need? Thats like trying to run a level 4 mission in a bustard, then whining on the forums to remove t2 industrials from the game.

Incorrect: CCP made something which is absolute bull because a coder thought he can safe time and apply all attributes you got to an item exchange to an auction which actually is absolutely reluctant to the meaning of an auction. This is a coding error and as Oveur said will be fixed. => Exploit rules should apply here

A very good point. Regardless of how daft the OP was in the first place or how much pain I feel for him or not...
If its being fixed doesn't this mean its not valid? If there is nothing wrong with it then why change it unless its either an exploit or something that isn't working as intended? If your changing this because of either of the above does this mean he should get this scam stopped?

The worst thing the OP must be feeling is that this swindle is a long drawn out "can I do anything?" over six days.
Normally you lose a ship, get scammed, whatever. Feel the pain, but the job is done and you move on.
In this case, the OP can do nothing but sit and want as that billion ISK drip, drip, drip away, until the auction finally ends.

Bang on the mark. If CCP are planning a "Fix" then it is not working as they intended. If they are planning an "enhancement" to the current system then current mechanics are valid and tough luck to the OP.

Allow the contract to be cancelled until the last 24h. If the seller chooses to opt-out of the auction, he must forfeit 10% of the buyout price, payable to the current highest bidder.
I think that addresses all these issues.

I like this idea. It would stop people just quitting auctions merely because it hasn't made the money they wanted and could easily increase the bidding amount.

Sucks to be the OP but you got caught out there.
The point about Eve that some people are missing is that the RPG bit of MMORPG stands for Role-Playing Game. Look it up. You're pretending to be someone else. Basically, just as you can be in real life, you can get scammed in game. It's perfectly valid. So why all the bleating, exactly?
Hopefully enough people have by now read about various scams both IRL and on these forums concerning in game scams. What worries me is that people still don't learn.

Absolutely not. Reserves suck and are unnecessary. Set your minimum bid at the mininum you're willing to receive. That way there's no need to cancel an auction unless no one is bidding on it at all.

I have a couple of recommendations that work.
CRY!! You will feel better after.
Come to the realization that you didn't lose anything. You actually gained the experience of a very important lesson. Thinking before taking any action.
Forgive the person who did this to you. You will be a better person if you do. And never do this to someone else. You will sleep better.

Edited by: Malicia Skirj on 18/02/2007 15:18:12 This is how the Rumor Mill starts getting cranked up. Oveur didn't say it's an error and will get fixed in Rev 1.4. He said it's a perfectly valid game mechanic and will be addressed in Rev 1.4. As similar as those two sound there are two completely different meanings there. As far as we know "addressed" might mean adding something to the tutorial in an effort to help people avoid it more.
The fact that this is an auction really makes no difference in my mind. The OP basically said, "You can buy it for 1 mil if no one else bids or 1 bil if you want it now". No one forced him. This isn't even much of a scam. Minimum bid of 1 mil is pretty cut and dry.
I'd say the OP got swindled by his own greed. "Ooooh....I can make the sale NOW and not pay taxes if I do it this way! I'm blind to everything else with all these ISK signs in my eyes. :D"

It sucks for the OP, and it will NOT be ended early for him or reimbursed because it's a legitimate game mechanic.
Never ever ever ever ever trust anyone in EVE that you don't know IRL, and even then you should be suspicious. One of my buddies logged onto my account and cleaned my wallet out before I left Korea. Luckily he didn't know about my alt char who keeps all my principle ISK in the corp bank. :P
