I just bought a BenQ FP241W 24" widescreen - plays Eve and other games at 1920 x 1200 and its amazing, especially jumping from a 17" tft.
Cost just under ú600 and is an 8 bit panel so colour management for CS2 work is spot on once calibrated.
No ghosting at all in games and it has component, vga, dvi, hdmi and composite inputs, PIP, USB etc.
Also plays 1080P movies due to resolution and they look awesome.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000GYHS6Y/interactiveda3003-21
Bargain for ú120, Amazon says it has a 8ms response time but my manual says 5ms.
Got me one of those recently, for only 127... I'm super happy with it :)

I have received my new Eizo 24" (S2411W) today. It has an impressive image quality compared to my old 19" Belinea TFT.
The downside is the price of approx 1kÇ. If you would like to buy a 24" (1900*1200) take care that you grafic adapter can handle it, my (GeForce 5700 Ultra) doesn't support this for DVI :(

Same here, i just got my 2007WFP a month or two ago. Everything looks really good with this new monitor. I noticed that all of the "shiny" things in EVE like amarr stations, windows on ships, and the stars in the background (before the new map :|) looked so much better.
Also, Dell has good customer service. They gave me an exchange when i had a few issues without asking a question.
Btw, i wrote a review on it on the dell site, 2007WFP review

I ended buying the Samsung 206BW (20 inch WS) for about $300. Great deal, great resolution. Looks really muddy if I drop it down to anything but the recom. resolution, but i think that's just the way LCD's work. All in all I think it's a great monitor and I'm comfortable buying a Samsung. Which is, the way I understand it, what most Dell monitors are.

Actually, the Dell monitors use the S-IPS panels which belong to Phillips i believe. Samsung makes the S-PVA panels. Im pretty positive that the difference is that the IPS panel has better color up close, while the PVA have higher viewing angles. Oh and yea, LCDs look ****ty when theyre not at their native resolution. It ends up making old games (that dont support the res) look even worse T_T

tbh for playability i would recomend downgrading your monitor type for a two monitor setup. that way you can have scanner, or map up for pvp situations which i have found to be very very useaful.

All you nublets and your dell
I bought this screen this November after a few months of 'testing' different monitors. I work at a local computer shop, so i would stay after work sometimes to take advatnage of the screens (over my old 17" crt) and to take advantage of the store t1 line (Also playing eve on a t1 line doesn't really do better with lag than my cheap 3mb/s dsl line) I finally ended up gettingthis moniter (for about 120$ above the current newegg price). Everything on it is crisp and clear & there is no blur, and i have yet to stumble across a monitor that is better for the price. If your looking for a damn good monitor then i would take this one as the first pick any day.

Edited by: Xiaodown on 15/03/2007 03:13:45 Ok.
I have done a LOT of thinking on this topic.
Here's the thing.
The resolutions for widescreen are: 1280x768 1680x1050 1920x1200
The problem is that you cannot get a 19x12 monitor for less than about $500-$600. Ok? Now. Eve is best played, in my opinion, in windowed mode. I'm constantly looking up stuff online, or reading PDF files, or whatever to help me with Eve. Also, when you get an alt and run two simultaneous clients, windowed mode is the way to go, if you don't have a 2nd monitor. And alt-tabbing out of eve - though it's better than it was a year ago - is still a roulette chance whether or not it's coming back. I also think that I don't have enough screen real estate on eve if the resoluion is less than 1280x1024.
This means that for me, 1680x1050 is NOT going to work. I need more than 1080 vertical pixels, by the time I account for the title bar and the start menu. Which means if I want widescreen (which I do), I need 1920x1200.
But my budget didn't allow for $500+ monitors. So, what I ended up with is a 1600x1200 4:3 (regular aspect ratio) monitor.
It wasn't what I wanted. I went into the monitor search with the idea that I wanted a widescreen monitor that could simultaneously run two eve clients at 1280x1024. I ended up with the 4:3 monitor, but I honestly love it.
I don't work for dell, but we do use their stuff at work - it's what I bought for home, too. You should check http://www.dell.com/outlet/ - It's the site for refurbished stuff, but if you read deep you find that the monitors from there are not refurbished (they're open-boxes that have been returned) and they still have the origional warranty as if ou bought them new.
~Xiao
Edit: Just to clarify, my 1600x1200 monitor is 20". I think you might be able to get a 19" 1600x1200, but the pixels will be tiny, go for the 20. A 20" - 23" widescreen (because it's diagonal) is 1680x1050. If you want 1920x1200, it's going to be 24" diagonal monitor.
Most 19" LCD monitors are going to be 1280x1024, which isn't obviously big enough to run 1280x1024 windowed eve.

I own a Sun Microsystem (yeah, you read right) 20 inch monitor that was manufactured in 1996. model name has been scratched off long ago.
i call her Gertrude.
she is a 11-year old, 75 pound monster, broke 2 desks and gave me many back aches over the years. but nevertheless, i would not trade her for any other new, sleek and fancy model that would not have any emotional connection with me. that, or high refresh rate, high resolution, overlapping blue and red channel... she doesn't have any of the "fancy things"...
we have seen many things together. seen me getting ganked for the first time, see me gank for the first time, she has seen me QWERTY'd face first on the keyboard. all of that and she has never judged me, we understand each other.
that was until last month...
you see, Gertrude's age is finally catching up with her... she is getting a slight case of color blindness, or color-confusion if you will. sometimes the green and blue channel will disapear, making my whole screen red (and making everything neutral on overview too). sometimes, all she sees is blue. she has yet to have any "green" problem though. this is not so problematic because a few slaps on the head will usually fix her problem.
yesterday, it took 10 minutes for Gertrude to wake up.
i think she needs to be retired...

1680x1050 is plenty, trust me. The problem with 1900 res is that you're STUCK with the native res... so when it's that high you're going to have framerate problems with fullscreen games somewhere along the line; 1680 isn't quite as extreme.
I got a 22" asus and it's a *****er... I thought I'd miss those extra pixels in the vertical but extra horizontal so sooo much more useful.

I have the Dell 24 in wide screen also. I love it. Only thing I don't like is the small font in EVE and 1900 x 1200. It is hard as heck to read. I wish they would give us the ablility to up the font to a bigger size and diffreant style.

STOP RECCOMENDING LCD TVS
They are televisions, not monitors, their resolution may be good for television, but its terrible for a pc monitor, especially one thats 42" big.
If you want a monitor, buy a monitor.
Now, as far as eve goes, you're spot on about widescreen, theres no better way to play. It really is budget dependant though, the 19" you are suggesting would be pretty nice, of course you can get bigger and bigger up to a dell 30" which would be extreme. Something like a 24" would probably give you a decent price/size ratio and be large enough to last you a long time.
I'm currently using a 17" wide for eve, unfortunately 30" monitors arent very practical on laptops :(
Another consideration is you meantioned you're a developer. I'm a recently 'retired' one and I still have my desktop set up for it with 2x 4:3 LCDs which Is the best ive found. I used 3 at one stage but always found the third was used for other stuff, like eve, so my productivity went down.
So, in my opinion, youve got to decide which is more important: EVE, or developing. Easy choice IMO.

Yah, Dell monitors are quite nice but I wish they wouldn't ship them with maximum backlight and pixel brightness. When I got my first LCD monitor at work I thought I was allergic to them because it gave me a headache and upset my stomach. Luckily I worked out how to reduce the backlight and more importantly the pixel brightness. I run both my Dell monitors with the colour settings at 70 now.
But tbh any LCD screen seems fine for me once set up. I have two separates at home and two laptops. They are all better than a CRT :) -- (Battle hardened industrialist)
