It's going to be the new PVP goals and new sovereignty system. So that small gangs can actually do important things and blobbing will hopefully be less common. So new outpost defenses, new POS defenses, stuff like that.

"We also have some crazy ideas for the agent system, Exploration, Science & Industry, Contracts etc., all which over the time have people more or less assigned to it full time, so there are always additions and improvements to it. We're still finalizing the tasks for Revelations 2.0 in these areas of the game, so we can't go into detail, but there will be "lotsa lurving" from our "PvE" group."
As always no specifics, no timeframe. So it it "soon" as in never.
Factional warfare should have had a PvE part, now it seem to be fleet vs fleet.
The crazy ideas are there from before I started palying, but are never implemented, so I dubt them till we see some more precise data.
To add: the only thing about missions, my main gripe is "we have crazy ideas about agents", so nothing on the actual missions.

This way you won't need 100+ people to be part of it.

There has been talk of putting in better corp management tools, and I was wondering where these come in to this action plan? Are there any plans for extras such as exporting wallet data, or other exports/tools to aid in the creation/maintenence of these player infrastructures (or the creation/maintenence of third part tools for the infrastructures)? ------

I'm very happy that CCP is trying to fix the lag and pos combat altogether. I hope their plan actually works.
And omg, the sexeh Merlin model! Want to see Hawk!
About the sound... It's turned off most of the time because I need to hear orders from FC. Music is never on. Sometimes I leave sound on at boring gatecamps to hear the gate activation. But it hasn't caused any crashes for me at least.

Would rather have minimal lag than gfx tbh.
Currently Eve is CPU limited. I.E. the grapics are so out of date nothing you can do to them really makes a difference on FPS or lag.
However, from what i have heard from my programming friends[I am less than proficient in programming languages], the DX 9 protocol is much faster than the current dx 7 or 8 that they are using.
That means that the graphics update will not only make things look better, but it will also improve performance under high stress situations.
Also, there are efficiency problems with assigning more people to the same field, as well as the fact that the graphics folks are most likly specialized in graphics.
What this means is that a graphics update is a win win. It will make the game look better and perform better. And, at the worse, wont make it perform any worse than it is now. ---------------------------------------- Thou Shalt "Pew Pew" |

And if this makes better in a fleet-battle i wanna se better of that grafic-lag one can get. The best I've encurage is 4-5 mins grafic-lag in D7-ZAC a coupple of months ago.
I wanna see better difference between carriers and battleships. One shouldnt have a bigger battleship than a carrier. Its kind of funny when one meet a carrier and its the same size as my bs. Make it a difference.

Some very interesting updates. I'm very happy to see more work done to make the game work better than to new content like factional war.
I notice that breaking the big blob (killing fleet combat) is still a goal:
Quote:
THEN, when we've gotten warfare right, when we've gotten it fun for small groups of skirmishers as well as a 15 man wings or 30 man fleets to make a difference, goals, which you don't need a 200 man fleet to achieve something.
So...if 30 man fleet can make a difference, why wouldn't 100 or 200 make more difference?
I'm also really looking forward to the sound working!
Hopefully the corporate culture gets cleaned up enough for me to still be a subscriber when these changes roll out (and so far the Arkanor IA announcement isn't enough yet, feel free to contact me if you want to know why).

Quote: ou see, one aspect is that warfare has been levitating to a point which we, and we believe you, don't necessary like. We all like player infrastructure, we all like the goals they create, and some of at least like to defend or attack that which we, or others, strive to create. But we don't necessarily like to have to gather fleets in the size of 100's to achieve anything at all, while possibly crashing server nodes - or at least lagging to hell and back.

I've been comparing this latest skill dump with the one previously posted http://myeve.eve-online.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&bid=310, which gave the position about a year ago.
One thing I've noticed is that there are a lot fewer characters listed this time. Previously there were 438371 characters listed, with 358353 of those with under 1mill skillpoints. Total for 1+mill skillpoints was 80018.
This time we haven't got a figure for those less than 1mill skillpoints. Given that the new character creation always results in a character with under 1mill skillpoints, there should still be a quantity of characters in the less than 1mill category. However, it's a safe bet that the majority of those under 1mill are alts and can be filtered out. The total for 1+mill is now 169477.
Given that there has undoubtedly been account churn in the last year, you would expect there to be far more characters overall than there are subscription accounts. That this is not the case suggests that this list only includes characters on active accounts.
Cross-referencing with mmochart.com, we find that the old blog (Feb 06) corresponded with a subscriber count of 98943. The site doesn't appear to have published updated figures past June-06, most recent information I can find is a http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=461283&page=1 listing 156k subscriptions last month.
From this, I suggest that this time last year, approx 18925 of the <1mill SP chars were genuine new characters, up to 197886 would have been alts on subscriber accounts, leaving at least 141542 on trial accounts.
As to the latest numbers, I'd assume that either we've seen approx 13k more subscriptions since 17th Jan 07, or the new char generation has encouraged some people to do at least basic training on their alts to push them into the 1mill+ range.
First, lets look at what I would expect the pattern to be, given basic assumptions. Every char starts at just below 1mill. Assuming that alts don't get trained at all, they will never show up on the new blog. If we assume all mains are trained constantly from birth to when the player stops playing, and a constant player attrition rate across all ages of player, I would expect to see the highest number of active chars at 1-2mill, reducing in a smooth curve to zero at some point in the 60+ range.
In testing this assumption, it is important to notice that the "bins" for this data are not all of equal width. The apparent "peak" in the numbers at 5-10mill is because it is the first bin that is 5mill SP wide, the previous ones are only 1mill SP wide. Hence, you need to turn it into a histogram, by dividing the total count by the width of the bin. Do that and you end up with the following values (starting with the 1-2 category, excluding the 60+ as it is unbounded):
38371 16780 10302 8074 6022 4327.8 2566.6 1699.8 1324.8 1099.2 868.4 630.4 378.4 202.4 62.2
Plot these, and you see exactly the sort of decaying curve my original assumptions would predict.
Plot the old and new versions of this histogram, and you can see how things have changed. At 25mill+ SP, there's been a relatively small, uniform increase in all categories. This suggests the majority of chars that reach this level stick around and just continue training.
The further down the SP ranking you go, the bigger the increase has been. This also makes sense, as we would expect newer players to be concentrated in the lower SP bands - you're not going to start from scratch and get a 25Mill SP char in a year, after all. There also appears to be 2 stages to this curve, the initial die-off at 2-4mill SP, from short-term players who never really get into the game. Then the attrition rate dies back to a lower constant level, people getting bored, finding other games. By the time you get to 25mill SP, those that are going to leave generally have, and those that stay will probably play until they turn off TQ. ------- There is no magic Wand of Fixing, and it is not powered by forum whines. |

Originally by: Marcusi So...if 30 man fleet can make a difference, why wouldn't 100 or 200 make more difference?
If you bring 100 to achieve a goal that 30 could manage, then you'll still achieve the goal, it'll just be easier. But meanwhile, your enemy has 3 gangs of 30 out achieving 3 goals simultaneously. If one of them runs up against your 100-man team, one gang of 30 is forced to withdraw, but the other 2 will have a clean run to their objective, because all your pilots are in the big gang (am assuming both sides have equal manpower here). They will still have achieved 2 goals to your 1. And there's nothing to say the third 30-man gang won't find an alternative goal to go for that your 100-man blob aren't guarding, bringing it back to 3-1 again.
The key to making this work are multi-vector goals, rather than everything coming down to one gate-camp, one POS siege etc, which is where constellation sov is likely to come in, and more staged goals rather than the all-or-nothing fights we have now that make massive fleet confrontations the only logical way to go.
The trick to balancing this with the need to encourage player infrastructure is going to be tuning it so that small gangs can go enough damage to be worthwhile, without allowing any random wandering pirate to sneak in and cripple your infrastructure investment. ------- There is no magic Wand of Fixing, and it is not powered by forum whines. |

Yay for good stuff. \o/
On an art note: I liked the current pod better. It's faceted 'faberge' egg look is simple yet elegant and not too over done. I'd love to see the original pod with some extra DX10 goodness on it, with self shadowing and spec and bump maps etc.
I think the original pod design would look better with the new graphics engine than the 'new and improved' version. It's just too over-done.
Mega looks pretty nice. Bellicose, well, it's a great model, but it's still ugly as sin lol.

Edited by: Ishina Fel on 15/02/2007 08:01:16 Oh yes, sound revamp. I'd like to play with sound again (though that will probably accomplished by buying an actual soundcard, to replace my onboard Realtek codec which crashes EVE to reboot).
I would like at this point to massively plug the OpenAL initiative. With Vista and DX10 throwing DirectSound out of the windows (pun not intended), OpenAL is THE thing to do these days. I'm sure your in-house Vista client dev department has long since selected a solution for their project, but if you're trying to make the "one size fits all" DX9 client Vista-compatible, it will have to be OpenAL.
Also, can we get some optional support for the Sound RAM on X-Fi cards? Too few games support this in my opinion. It gives games the ability to handle sound completely on the X-Fi, which can only improve general client performance. Even if you have more than enough RAM in the computer - the absence of sound-related queries on the main RAM means faster processing of more important queries. And, you know... advanced sound features can be cool, too

I am probably reading it wrong but looks like Revelations 2 is getting more and more empty and Revelations 3 will end up being split into 5 parts to get it out with so much stuff crammed into it.
TBH, I dont care about the graphical updates or more content, as I am not fully utilising COSMOS or exploration etc at the moment anyway.
But if the graphics are gonna be fixed, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE .. Fix the damn Chimera... ---
