Just got it, and it seems pretty good. Must be some other EVE players here who have picked it up.
I've run into two issues:
1) Static defenses seem way too powerful. I can quickly build up 10 tech 2anti-air and 10 tech 2 anti-ground guns in a line and wipe out massive armies and squadrons in seconds. Even if I lose a couple, their replacement cost and time seems 10-20 times lower than that of the massive enemy armada that died instantly to them.
2) Framerate. At lowest detail, on a P4 3Ghz with 1GB of RAM and an x800 GTO, I get under 1 frame per second when I'm attacking an enemy base. Its not graphics; upping the graphics does not lower the FPS. It appears to be that the sheer mound of calculations, probably mostly physics, are slowing my computer to a crawl. But if I can't even get 1 FPS, I can't imagine how even the best computers available today would get more than double or triple mine... two or three FPS. And that doesn't sound right...

All the lag and calculations aside ( they don't seem to slow my comp down at all even on the 6v6 81km maps), the defensive buildings are waaaaaaay too good for early-mid game. True it stops rushing but then again whats the point of many teir 1&2 units. ----------------------------------- Death is more eternal than life. Everyone dies but not everyone lives.

Supreme Commander was designed around dual-core processors, not single-core. That's probably the reason why you have such a horrible frame rate. Youa re probably right about it being the physics that does it, though.

But dual core would only mean twice as fast.
And honestly, the powerful defenses don't stop rushing; I can just build 15 air factories and crank out 150 bombers, then tell them all to bomb the enemy commander
This method works even if the commander has upgraded himself with the shield upgrade

How about if there's the ground based shields up?
And tbh, that's why you keep squads of anti-bomber ships flying about before they can get to you commander :). ------

I've found that 150 loads of bombs generally will pierce the shield halfway through the first volley.
I've also found that if the enemy has fighters, its quite easy to just... add... even more bombers...

A base fortified with T2 shields and about ten T2/T3 air defenses will pwn most any T1/T2 air fleet if it's not being escorted by scouts or interceptors.
There's another Supcom thread here that hasn't been updated in a while but it's still relevant.

I play supcom on a 1.9 Ghz laptop... i can have upto about 200 or so units before it starts to slow down lol..
But then i play ranked games and these usually end before i even have 50 units up...
Stupid people moving their commanders next to my base when i have tech 2 missile systems up...
and moving them across water when i have 15 torp bombers...
Or leaving them half dmagaed in the open when i have 20 gunships...
some people are just stupid
DS i wouldnt even try and run it on tht computer... you must be insane...
Im waiting on my core2duo 2gb ram 8800 sproting new pc before i try the bigger games

Quouting MECHcore from the CELES forums:
Quote: For the ones out here with melting computers while playing Sup Com , here is the solution
While playing open the console , press the ¦/¦ button ( next to 1 and ontop of tab ) , or in my case press the "%" button to open the console.
Enter the following commands one by one , and press enter each time to disable them.
ren_decals ren_bloom ren_reflection
Now with these settings turned off my FPS doubled , without much grafics quality loss
Atm you will have to enter these commands each time that you start up Sup Com , they cant be saved yet , but people are working on it trying to find out

Yeah i got it, no performance problems unless i run a 8 man skirmish with 1000 unit limit.. 2 x 2.14 ghz and 256mb vid a card with 2 gigs of ram.
I love the game but its true that large air fleets are pretty much instoppable, 5 or 6 t3 bombers will drop any shield if they are not shot down. But i usually just build a line of 10-15 t3 air defense and it starts rainign bombers if they come...
The most anoying are those damn t3 artillery's... Never know what in your base is next... and if he has a lucky hit your commander is gone taking half your base with it.
Land battles are still the most fun in this game... Recently had one of those epic battles with 3 sides involved... about 250 siegebots and 250 others thingies covering 5 spiders and a galactic collosus :D massacre
I lost that battle tho :-/

The main reason I won't be buying the full game is the resource management. I liked the game for most part but everything to do with the resources seems incredibly sluggish.
Call me wierd, but I like the traditional Probes -> Minerals -> nexus approach.

If you have a soundblaster audigy card of some sort (like my audigy ZS) then putting sound acceleration down to basic in dxdiag will help drasticly with the framerates.
Also a big contributor to crap fps is the minimap. Turn that off and it will help.

I have noitced that aswell... becuase of the way the minimap is in this game i think its just like the system rendering the entire screen again.. in a little box..

Big TA fan here ...
Air was never really viable for attacking bases. They're only good for destroying enemies on route. Of all the attack options I like battleships, T3 Assault bots, and whatever the ground experimental unit is. And in true TA fashion, make your huge mass fab/T3 power plant complex, use support commanders end game, and pump out an army every minute.
Total Annihilation didn't run well on the computers of it's time, and neither does SupCom : / But hey, it's what you pay for if you want real time physics calculations. I just hope support physics processing offloaded to the GPU for future-proofing. Give it two if not three years until we can all play on the huge maps without the massive slowdowns of today.

ok Framerates well ive got two machines
- amd dual core 3800+, 2.0gb ram, 7600gt 256mb high ingame settings; excluding aa & shadows; @ 1920 by 1200 = [12-15: normal. 20-25fps: zoomed out 6-10fps large numbers] highest bottleneck factors for that system are: cpu, graphics card
- intel core duo 6300, 1.0gb ram, tested with 7600gt (though would be on a 6600gt) high ingame settings; excluding aa & shadows; @ 1920 by 1200 = [about 3-4fps higher then above] highest bottleneck factors for that system are: ram, graphics card
----- medium settings & lower res i'll be looking at a playable 25fps there or arounds. though having high fidelity* texture, level of detail high res are really painful for me to turn down since there sooo sweeet!!!
how i play I prefer to play lan/ip with friends skirmish or compain, though havent done many gpgnet online games. Have watched quite a few replays

Unfortunately gimp doesn't like me at the moment, so just imagine an image macro of a mavor surrounded by nukes and tech 3 artillery with the caption "im in my base, pwnin urs" (while thats a slightly excessive example I had fun with against some AI on a huge map in all seriousness: artillery rules, as it has since its introduction to warfare)
And as for the performance issues, I haven't had any trouble, but I have a core 2 [email protected], 2 gigs of ram and a geforce 7950gt. Yes it slows down quite a bit if I have 1000 units, but its quite playable on the largest maps, if a bit slow and command lag being annoying. --- Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising up every time we fail. - Emerson |

Especially since it sounds like I'll be stuck playing smaller maps on my PC. No way I'd be able to maintain framerate in a bigmap multi game from what I understand. At least I could See the heavyhitters, right?

i agree on the base defense thing. It took me freakin AGES to comeplete the first mission because no matter how many units i sent at the enemy base they died fairly quickly, and even if i managed to pierce their defenses i would die eventually and he would rebuild quickly.
Thats when i attacked from two sides and the air simultanously, that did the trick. I figure base defenses wont be as annoying when you get better artillery and nukes and whatnot. ______________

Ah, I see how it works now.
The early campaign missions are horrible because they don't let you get to the later T2/T3 units, which are much stronger against base defenses. Bombers have like 20 hitpoints! The later gunboats have over 400.
I was using a set of 50 T3 gunboats and they basically obliterated everything in their path with minimal losses.

I bought a copy of SC after testing out the demo on my gaming rig. Have to agree on the static defenses thing, at least in the campaign, I end up churning out huge armies to take down bases with only a few point/AA defenses. Micromanaging assaults helped a bit, though that's not my biggest gripe...
Mission 1 for the, um... blue guys... UEF? Was really good fun and I learned a lot about optimising gameplay to get units managing themselves (automatic ferrying with air-lifted transport was awesome when I finally discovered it!). It was a gentle introduction to the game, I completed all the goals and got dropped into Mission 2.
Oh. My. God. The enemy starts with a well-developed, T2 defended base with shields and massive ground/aerial production. My first attempt to airlift an engineer and defending force to the research base was hampered by ground and aerial assaults along the way, but I managed it just in time. I then amassed a nice force to escort the convoys across (took two goes, the first failed when I tried to do it on foot), no problem.
Things started to fall apart while planning my attack on the enemy commander. My best efforts to install defenses at my base were ruined by massive aerial suicide squads going straight for my commander. A second play with more solid development in the starting base early on failed because I couldn't reach the research base in time to repair it.
What the hell, GPG, can we have a slightly easier step up in difficulty so I don't feel completely useless?
Oh, and hello, I'm back from crunch time. Yeuch, Gallentean sig, that needs fixing...

What is really funny is that the campaign missions start unbearably hard and get... easier.
The last mission to defend Black Sun was an absolute cakewalk; I kept hitting the unit limit because they weren't killing enough of my gunboats

Quick question FPS wise - Does having a dual monitor display active have a major impact on FPS? As I run my second monitor as a full overview map to keep an eye on everything.
Anyway I've been playing this game alot and everytime I learned somthing new so here's a few useful tips.
- The assit button is one of the most powerful actions in this game when you learn to use it. Some examples...
* Setting a factory to assist another one will mean it will build any units the other factory is if there is more than one in the queue and it has the tech level upgrade that gives it access to that unit. The assisting factory will also send completed units to the same location set by the main factory. This is very useful since you can basically group factories together and only need to give build orders to one of them, it will then distrubute the work to the others assiting it.
* Setting an engineer to assist a factory will speed up it's construction (although it costs more resources to do per build job).
* Air transports can be set to ferry units from a source to destination. You can assign a factory to automatically send it's units to the ferry point so they are shipped to wherever you need them right away.
* You can assign an air transport to assits another one. This means it will help that air transport move/ferry any units it can't carry when it's full (most useful for helping move large numbers of units along a ferry route).
* You can set an engineer to assist another one or your commander, they will then follow that unit around and help it with whatever it's doing. (Note: The assisting unit does not need to have as high a tech level as the unit it's assisting to help i.e. a t1 engineer can help a t3 one build a t3 structure). This is very useful when building the large super units or large structures and getting them built in a decent amount of time.
* Putting a commander or engineer on patrol around your base will repair any damaged structures nearby automatically, if you're low on resources they will also reclaim anything they can to bring in mass or energy (such as wreckage, trees, rocks etc).
* When building base structures of any kind hold down the shift key and left click on an area of the map, then drag the cursor and you can build a line of those units (useful when building walls).
* When you want to tell an engineer or commander to build several structures just hold down the shift key and place each building, the eng/commander will queue the build jobs and work through them (saves you alot of micro managing building your base).
* To make repairing and refuling aircraft easy just tell put a patrol waypoint near the airbase/support unit and they'll automatically land and refuel/repair as needed.
I'm sure there's a load more functionality as well but I've found all these little things help you to get your base running itself while you focus on controlling your armies.

GPG removed the disc check in their latest patch, but unfortunately the game still needs to be installed first.
As a little anecdote, here's the full patch note:
* SecuROM: The disc-check security feature has been removed (except for Polish, Russian, and Chinese-Traditional releases).
I think they're trying to say something.

The patch won't work for me; it gets to one of the files and says it doesn't exist (editor.scd) even when it certainly does!
I can run it without the CD anyways as long as I have SecureROM emulation on in DaemonTools.

Not really.
Early on, the only units I could build were tech 1 and weak. They let me build better and better units, but my tactics didn't change; all I did was zerg with gunboats, which pretty much destroyed everything that was thrown at me.

Ive come to the conclusion that the best offense is a good defense. Build some sort of stategic arty or missle launcher and shell the enemy commander. Eventually you'll get lucky and hit them.
Even with a c2d (fastest 2 meg cache one) 2 gigs of ram and a x1900gtx the damn thing still lags out making assualts next to impossible. |

My favourite tactic is putting the commander in a totally random location on the map (behind the enemies base works good) and building a stealth field generator next to him - omg u cant see mee! They never think to check behind ---

You can also have a bunch of overlapping shield generators, and t2 mobile shield gens set to "assist" the commander. Just have the commander stand in the middle of the shield gens, and you'll be more or less artillery proof. --- Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising up every time we fail. - Emerson |

Light bot rush > You. T1 Arty + Radar > Static defence. Aeon + Water Map + Fast Destroyer rush > Your base.
Oh...or my favorite, Cybran + Rush to Tac. Missile Launchers + Spamming off two Tac Missiles at their Commander.

Best Offense is a good defense??? Have you played against a skilled player yet? Everytime I try to play the defensive game, I've lost.. while your sitting shielding your base, their out making 2nd or 3rd forward bases.. and covering more ground towards you..
Myself and 5 other corpies have the game.. and have been playing those 81x81km maps that can go on for 4 hours or more :) Awesome game, although at one stage towards the end, we had the total units of 4 people in the middle of the map battling it out, and the lag was unplayable ;) 45 minutes of real time equaled about 3 minutes ingame..
Some very funny strategies to play with:
You spot the enemy commander, and your playing a game type that doesn't end when your commander dies, So you load up your commander into an air transport, and head straight for their commander in the middle of their base thats sure to be surrounded by AA. Another variation is to upgrade your ACU with the teleport thats quite fun too ;) that 4 hour game I had with the lads earlier, managed to teleport my ACU into their base, within a few feet if his commander, and take his ACU along with a good 80% of his base with it.. This option takes a long time to setup and pull off however.

For all those complaining about it being to hard to run on youre current boxes, may I point you in This Direction
For all those playing Supcom and enjoying youreselves, may I point you in This Direction.
Sorry, dont mean to high jack a thread, its just everything about SupCom made me
A: Want to play Total Annihilation, B: Want to play Homeworld 2.
I found the tech tree to simply be a chore, that simply dilutes gameplay. Its so varied its to hard to achieve the proper unit/counter in any realistic situation. I also have no problem with the absence of any relevant micro, I did love TA after all. But good god, if I wanted to think this much I'd go play some Axis and Allies with a mate.
On the other side of things, when it came to unit control, overall timeline, build orders and ability to adapt with flexible match strategies, I still havent seen a game to rival Homeworld 1 or 2, and quiet simply would rather play my 1007th match of Homeworld than another match of SupCom ever again. But thats just my opinion, you folks have fun.

Atm you will have to enter these commands each time that you start up Sup Com , they cant be saved yet , but people are working on it trying to find out
How do you open zhe console? the (next to 1 and ontop of tab ) and %(you mean shift+5?) don't worke. Do i have to change some settiings? or maybe a commandline in some file?
Its the demo btw

You play it on a 1.9Ghz laptop and you say my overclocked P4 is way too slow?
This might be your problem DS, a number of guys in BDCI have SC, those who had overclocked CPUs reported running into framerate problems after an hour or so of play, after dialing back to stock speeds they've reported no further issues, Overclocked CPU's are also showing up as a regular trouble maker on the GPG forums.

Doesn't make a difference; my CPU runs at a fine temperature either way ever since I cleaned it out. Underclocking it not surprisingly makes it go slower

If you experience poor performance then try using the game speed keys (numpad -/+) as this can improve framerate quite considerably.
There's a unit-command lag bug that I'm currently experiencing on 81x81 maps, but hopefully this should fixed in the next patch. -------- The Eve Diplomacy Table Eve Development Network |

droping perfomance on overclocked pIV after some time of playing is throttling for sure.

After playing the Beta of this game a month or so ago, I decided my current machine wouldn't do it justice so I slapped a grand on my credit card and got the best you could get, or as close as including an 8800GTX Card. I'm so glad I made this costly decision as it plays SC smoothly.
The requirements for the 2nd monitor though does cause even my beast of a machine to slowdown when your armies have built up a bit. Massive battles will cause slow framerates, but I find this is offset by slowing the game down a couple of steps.
Overall I quite enjoy the game, feels pretty much like the original TA did. I don't think defences are too powerful, the game makes you think tactically about what you need to do before you simply throw 500 units at your enemies defences because usually that ends up with you being slaugtered . I just like the fact you can't just rush your opponent and expect to win.
Personally I'm really looking forward to some good mods for this game, Chris Taylor has said he wanted it to be one of the most easiest and flexiable games you can modify.
The Establishment is at your service...

I realised the larger maps lag you to hell. Had a nice 5kmx5km match against a supreme AI and won this time. Nice, nice. Apart from building like 4 shield generators beside each other (uber defensve ftw) I enjoyed the slaughter.
Anyone else like the mobile factorys. I use them as a solo pwn mobile.
