Many things get mentioned often when people talk about why they like EVE Online. The skill system that works without grinding, the single unsharded server, the player-driven economy, the PvP, the overall complexity of the game. There is another thing which I love about the game, but I haven't seen it mentioned by anyone else. It has to do with the setting, which is why I'm posting about it in this section of the forum.
I love the fact that there are no aliens in the universe. True, aliens is something that many people automatically associate with science fiction - some would even say it isn't science fiction without them! That's nonsense, of course, but it is a fact that most popular science fiction universes have a myriad of alien races. Star Wars, Star Trek, the Traveller universe, the Wing Commander universe, and so on.
However, what annoys me about all of them is that these creatures are not really "alien" at all. Most of them are very human-like and "anthropocentric", as the term goes. Quite often, they are simply homo sapiens with a minor personality twist - like "logical" Mr. Spock. Or they are patterned on some form of animal which we have on Earth - there have been "cat people" aliens like the Kilrathi from Wing Commander, "dog people", "insect people", "octopus people"... For crying out loud, it's so unimaginative! If those are the "aliens" we are going to get, then I'd rather have none at all.
Only a handful of science fiction settings has really explored the potential of alien creatures, by giving them a true flavour and not merely making them a slight variation of homo sapiens or animal. Take a look at the stories by Arthur C. Clarke or Stanislaw Lem, where they are really weird and mysterious. But those settings are few and far between. Usually, you have cuddly ET's and wise, human-like sages.
On the other hand, there are science fiction settings that have done very interesting and exciting things with an all-human universe (or close to it), like Dune. Or EVE Online. I'm very happy with just having different cultures like the Amarr, the Caldari, the Gallente, the Minmatar. Not only is there a certain purity in that concept, it also sets the universe apart from games like Star Wars Galaxies - or from a fantasy universe like World of Warcraft, for that matter, where you also have various playable non-human races.
Well done, and I hope it stays that way. No cat people please, ever! As far as "aliens" go, the Jove already fill that niche very nicely.

We do have alien life, but none sentient.
I wonder how alien the descendants on the other side of the Eve Gate would have to seem. We think the Jove are badass.. Earth, as far as we know, never had to restart civilization from what just so happened to be in the ships that went through. o.O

I wholeheartedly agree with the OP!
Aliens are a cop-out, basically the writers saying "I got nothing," then making broad, sweeping generalizations of so-called alien species, turning what should be an ethnic group (or a cultural cliche) and making it into a full-blown species, supposedly developed apart from human culture (and all too often, resembling it far too much).
The human race is usually, in sci-fi circles, called "the most diverse of known sentient races" because the other stuff they came up with lacked as much diversity.
Come on, there's always the snobbish, intellectual guys, the "honorable warrior" guys with the silly grunting language, so on so forth... and they're always bipedals, and usually are just humans with silly ears or headpieces.
So yeah, anyway, aliens suck!

There are sentient aliens in Eve Online. Or, rather, the remains of a sentient alien race.

There are aliens... They're just non-sentient or dead (e.g. Sleeper, Takmahl, Talocan, & Yan Jung).
Eventually I would love to see aliens introduced to Eve in a storyline npc/actor fashion. Then after a couple years (if Eve is still around), they become playable.

Anyhow. GOOD POINT, aliens suck. jove are the closest or sanshas
and if aliens were added theyd have to be a little more mysterious like the very last enemy in the wing commander game series

No aliens? Hmm, but what about those rogue drones? Especially those in the new regions. Certainly they have some sort of intelligence, well limited, but still!
I agree with the op, i like that Eve has no fancy alien races which we can play, all is based on human race and that makes a lot of sense!

Are you sure they are native? I always thought that they are evolved from animals that the human settlers brought with them.
Also, sentience = the ability to experience suffering (e.g: pain, hunger), so furriers and stuff are sentient. Trees aren't sentient. ---

Well, trees exchange information through their roots and fungi when the weather changes etc... So they at least "communicate"...

Actually... it doesnt mean the ability to feel pain, cause even an ant can do that. It means the ability to know that it knows that it exists. Also the ability to know that it knows where it is. iow: the ability to think with logic and intelligence.
