After 5 years and 3 executive producers in a row confirming that there are no plans to work on WiS it might, just maybe be time to accept that it's not going to happen.

After that huge Incarna mess, which actually was more related to micro (lol, micro in NeX - now NES) transactions than actually the WiS part (which happened to be really messy too, though), it's not ever going to happen.
We got the micro transactions which we heavily revolted over, but we didn't get the WiS part and we're never going to get it.. Just more micro transactions...

I would not be surprised if a future WIS instead uses the UE4 engine, and integrates in some way with a potential future EVE online shooter. And then, I wouldn't be surprised if that doesn't happen, either.

Oh man, this again.
Alright folks, here's the deal:
CCP is working on (another) ground based shooter. They also ended up with a lot of experience/refining stuff via DUST.
HOWEVER
They've spent all of their non-EVE forays in to the universe trying to capture other sectors of the market. Note that DUST wasn't an MMO, and had laughable EVE integration, Valkyrie has an excessively low player base due to it being exculsive to expensive early adopter tech, and gunjack... well lets not talk about gunjack.
CCP made a decision a while back to be "the EVE company" but pretty much halfassed it after the collective meh that resulted from the DUST/EVE integration.
What we know about legion is that it's supposed to be less session based, PC-centric, and possibly more tightly integrated with EVE than DUST was.
However, you can put away your dreams of getting out of your spaceship, grabbing some power armor, and going all rambo. because of CCPs current "let's split the EVE universe in to as many markets as possible" approach, if you want to play the infantry game, its going to be a new character, in a new game, with a new installer.
In terms of Walking in Stations, what does this mean? Does it mean we'll never get WIS?
Yes and no. Guys from the old team Avatar reported having a solid working prototype for "site based gameplay" that the at-te-time CSM and others that saw it responded well to. They've also said multiple times that it isn't worth the effort to add WIS if it doesn't come with corresponding gameplay that integrates tightly with the existing EVE ship play.
This means it is HIGHLY unlikely you're going to see WIS style play until there is a platform for actual content in stations. Not just chairs and living rooms, but dedicated sources for new rewards that are critical to future EVE spaceship mechanics. You are not going to see a patch that just adds captain's quarters to citadels, and you're not going to see a patch that just adds a multiplayer lobby to stations.
You're ALSO probably not going to see EVE avatar style gameplay that too closely mirrors something like DUST, as DUST is being replaced by a separate product, Legion.
So, where does this leave WIS content?
Walking in stations will likely be the last, not the first phase of any avatar gameplay.
What we've been told is that the initial prototypes involved "sites" and given the context, its pretty safe to assume that these sites involved docking and getting out of your pod. If we're going to see WIS play in EVE in the future, this is the first form its going to take. They've also expressed a design goal with the old prototype to make sure it's not just a tack on game.
Now, I've never once been to an EVE event, never been on the CSM, etc. but looking at the history of WIS and CCP's actions regarding the EVE IP up to this point, here's a little theorycrafting as to what EVE on the ground could look like after they're done with the structures and current tiericide projects:
Legion takes a page out of the DUST playbook and uses rogue drones as the de-facto NPC bad guy. Legion development spends a lot of time developing exterior and interior art assets for ground based play, as many of those art assets can serve double duty for WIS content in the future. Which means you're not going to see WIS in EVE until legion gets much closer to release.
Capsuleers, not being infantry, do not use shooting stuff with guns and power armor as the primary method of play, but their existing skills are leveraged in a rework of relic sites. Why? Because currently relic and data sites use the exact same gameplay, with two separate hacking skills. Relic sites from this release forward continue to contain the existing containers, but also contain a main complex. We'll plunder these sites for new faction BPs, T3 materials for new ships, etc. by using many of our existing capsuleer skills in a type of avatar play that feels less like call of duty and more like resident evil or dead space. Hacking things will use the hacking skill and minigame. Drone skills, scanning, thermodynamics, the sciences, etc. will have various uses in semi-procedurally generated complexes that are more about puzzle mechanics with occasional shooting than all out combat. (Again, because all out combat is the job of another product, which they want to you buy and play)
Loot from these sites will be used to build tools for WIS content (think whatever an EVE version of a tricorder looks like) as well as new modules/tiers for structures and ships, and possibly legion gear if they decide to integrate the two economies. The complexes have internal loot you can carry on your capsuleer (blueprints, datacrystals, rdbs, etc.) but a large part of the loot also comes in the form of containers which must be jettisoned in to space and collected by you, your allies, or anybody who happens to be tooling around outside.
Hardpoints on said structures can be shot, which will **** things up for you inside. Getting killed in said site would be akin to getting podded, you lost a clone. That clone, however, would remain lootable for its implants, having not been all ****** up by exploding in a space ship. PVP inside one such complex among capsuleers would be extremely dangerous, risking explosive decompression, with very low fire rate high damage weapons (legion soldiers have special implants, and capsuleers are already jacked up so they can't use the cool military hardware, etc. so they're limited to low yield light weaponry) and the omnipresent threat of hostiles outside shooting the complex up, shooting your ship, and otherwise the massive terrifying danger of being on a rusted out hunk of crap floating in space will be major factor in what makes this mode of play distinct from Legion's run-and-gun army mans, literally being something so dangerous only the immortal capsuleer demigods would attempt it in the first place. |

I support realistic, fully-integrated WiS.
When my locator agent sends me to a war target who is offline (or even just afk) inside a station - I feel that I should realistically have the ability to dock, exit my captain's quarters, use my *hacking* skills to break into their hangar, shoot them in the back of the head as they sleep on their captain's couch - and steal everything they own.
I should also have the option to illegally break into the quarters of scammers/high-volume traders in the main market hubs at the expense of getting a suspect flag, and steal everything they own as well. This would lead to epic free-for-all firefights in the market hub stations - and ultimately a massive redistribution of wealth among those who actively *play* the game.
I realize that protecting my own assets would require setting up a network of Citadels and denying access to them to everyone else - but I'm OK with that, as long as it means I can do the above.
Also to bring all the suicide gankers on board people should be required to fill a backpack with all their valuables and exit their captain's quarters to take the items to the market area of the station - providing an additional opportunity for suicide ganking. Perhaps they should also have to carry large, obvious money-bags with their profits to/from the bank as well - just to add to the opportunities.
Non-combat pilots are already on-board as long as they get fancy clothes to try out and show off, so no need to add anything else for them.
And then I think we've got everyone in EVE on-board!
The dead swans lay in the stagnant pool.
They lay. They rotted. They turned

Bits of flesh dropped off them from

And sank into the pool's mire.

For example, im not interested in SOV warfare, POSes and captial ships, but CCP is focusing development on these areas for several years now. I cant even remember the last update that i really loved. I think it was the ship tiercide several years ago, when they made every ship useful.
Nevertheless, EVE ist still the only MMO worth playing in my opinion. Once you are used to the "hardcoreness" and sandbox environment of EVE, other MMOs are pretty boring. |

My reply to this line of argument remains the same as it was a year ago. Wait, it's two years now. Heh. Anyway:
If you really believe that there's such a huge untapped demand for WiS from people who will pay money for it, create a kickstarter. Let's see how much actual cold, hard cash people are willing to front up in order to pay CCP (or invest in a partnership with CCP) to make it happen.
I'll kick in -ú10 if you do, maybe more if you can agree some enticing stretch goals with CCP. I've always quite liked the WiS idea and if it was done properly it could have a lot of potential.

I pay the money - CCP provides the service. Dat's all. If i don't like the service - i go away. No hard feelings. It's not my job to keep subscribers subscribing. I'm not goin' to be paid for dat, k?

So in essence you want CCP to invest their money in recreating a project that crashed and burned, instead of into projects that worked.
Well I wish you the best of luck with your campaign. It'll be a tough sell, but who knows; maybe water will flow uphill for you.

Proof that the people who have spent years crying about WiS don't actually want it enough to make it happen. Notice this poster talking about people leaving if WiS doesn't happen....demonstrably not leaving even though WiS isn't happening....proving again that they really don't want WiS.
I'm with Mal. I'll chip in cash if someone does a kickstarter, I think WiS is a waste of time (an example of utopian "I want a game to be everything for me" thinking not unlike Star Citizen sycophancy), but if people were serious about it (they aren't) I'd help, just to see it done right. |

People that plex their accounts funnel just as much money to CCP as people that don't.
A plex used is a plex bought with real money after all. That's why CCP set up plex the way they did in the first place.
Expecting WIS within the next couple years is dumb. Expecting some kind of avatar content after they've rolled out the logical conclusion of player base structures (player built stargates to completely npc-free galaxies run entirely by players) and all their 40 versions of ship and module tiericides does seem like something they'd look at revisiting, but ONLY if legion, or whatever its called now... Nova? actually does well for them.
At that point they'd have an art team already churning out man-scale art that they could repurpose for whatever EVE avatar gameplay they think would make a good addition to the game in order to try and get those players to try and buy in to EVE, it would be much cheaper, and they'd be doing double duty for the art team with all their microtransactions coats and hats.
Asking about WIS in the current climate is silly. Asking about it three years from now IF they finally managed to make a successful first person game is the only situation in which I can see it becoming something CCP would bother attempting again, because money.
CCP has shown again and again that it something looks like it can make money, they'll invest in it for EVE. See: Alpha clones, SKINs, and continuing to make and sell new outfit parts in the aurum shop. Nobody asked for any of that, but it happened because CCP is a business. At the point they have hard data rather than the hopes and dreams of a couple forum posters that WIS will make them sufficient money it could become a reality.
In the current climate they're already spread so thin on niche, small, or vaporware projects like the VR stuff or their super skret third-time's-a-charm shooter that adding something so major to EVE just isn't financially realistic. |

Unless something changed, I was under the impression that PLEX only exists when actual real money has been spent. For everyone that grinds ISK to buy a PLEX, someone else has to pay CCP for the PLEX in actual dollars at some point. The seller has effectively paid for the buyer's sub for that account.
Did CCP just start seeding tons of free PLEX in to the game and I never got the memo, or are you on about some kind of more abstract metric for cash earned per human player or something? I'd like to see that economic breakdown if you've got a link handy. sounds interesting. |

And i don't wanna say "BUAAAA BAD GAME UNSUBSCRIBED!!!!11" - for now at least. I find EVE worth paying for it - even without WiS. It may be changed in future - in November especially - but for now i'm down with it.
All i wanna say that CCP IMHO make something people don't want to happen insted of something they were asked for years. Years of asking for WiS. Years of asking for more PvE content. Years of asking for mining rework. All of these may make people keep paying.
And - i don't even mention WoD. An army of fans were waiting and asking for it for years. CCP gave 'em some VR-crap instead.
Instead - they are giving people SKINs, F2P (Who the hell was asking for it? No, really?) and candies for subscription. OK, let's hope it will work and a bunch of people who don't want to pay will bring CCP more money than people who are able to pay but see less reasons for it with every update.

Whether you like the idea or not, CCP never actually tried WIS. They used an undeveloped engine to sell overpriced microtransactions.
Then we all rioted.
About the microtransactions.
Because there was no actual playable content in their shiny new patch with walkie-people.
it wasn't WIS or the sixty dollar monocles that caused the uproar. It was the combination of sixty dollar monocles and a "content patch" with no content other than a series of living rooms that were just less convenient versions of the station menu.
Had they released, you know, gameplay with those avatars, people would have been less pissed about the monocles. Had they just released cosmetics (like the SKIN system) without hyping up fantastic new dimensions of gameplay then failing to deliver any gameplay at all... people would have been waaaay less pissed.
Incarna,as a patch, was a failure because it was devoid of actual content, and replaced what would usually be content with microtransactions for the least important part of the game, the people. It added nothing to EVE but a way to spend money on something that had no use to the player.
It is not, however, a failure of either microtransactions or WIS. It's a failure of trying to use a half working beta of a new feature as a marketing tool to sell heavily overpriced microtransactions that had nothing to do with their main gameplay loop.
You can be damn sure they're not going to try it again until the finish abusing non-EVE sections of the gaming market with their third... wait no fourth...wait no fifth attempt at a game that includes people walking around.
Mark my words. As soon as CCP figured out how to make money off of the nineteenth reboot of their shooter prototype in 2347, they'll actually revisit avatar content in EVE. by then they'll have a ******* clue how it works, what people actually want out of it, and the whole market will be so desentized by hundreds of years of microtransactions that nobody will bat an eyelash at them any more.
Hell, they could release a sixty dollar monocle again right now and literally nobody would care. |

f2p is about to remove a barrier to entry to a wider group of players. The problem with the lack of avatar gameplay in EVE becomes more pronounced as other games feature it. It wasn't as true before, circa 2011, but now it is a standard for a space game to feature avatar gameplay. It's a matter of modernization now. f2players will have some basic expectations that will not be met. I guess I just want to be fair after my comment about working for dried fish up thread. No one is innocent here. Monument shooters should have been banned, and the fanfest videos of players recalling their participation in the riots was disgusting to me.

Even if the official news is that yes WiS will happen, I wouldn't believe it unless I heard that a new team was being stood up for it. Shanghai maybe. Or any location in a major creative center like San Francisco, Austin, Atlanta, Los Angeles. Canada. There's a London thing happening but apparently it's staying small or something. Doesn't sound like a heavy development location.
Location is important for the pool of experience and people from other companies and sectors, such as VFX or television or other games companies. 3D isn't a single / ubiquitous skill that everyone learns in school. What you learn in school are the basics and then you learn specific methods at different companies that you work for. The tools and methods you learn are so diverse it's almost worth changing companies and sectors on a regular basis just for the knowledge.
It's like cross-pollinating oneself. You can also expect to learn only what's done at a particular company.
So when you have a game like EVE where the assets haven't changed much, and something like avatar gameplay was started by White Wolf people and then hasn't been continued since, WiS isn't something they can just say or decide will happen. It's not a skillset that has been nurtured.
So nevermind promises, they don't have the people to continue WiS anyway.
I'm recently returned to school for 3D animation amd game design myself. This seems pretty weird for me to say these things knowing this is a small industry or something. Don't doxx me or something. I will say though, if CCP had a dev location anywhere in the US I would want to work there and start by scrubbing floors as an intern.
I love this game, my ten subs as my proof, but as a future industry professional there are some glaring problems that make me think 'hell no.'

Actually answering question in the title: they said they are going to expand this. Years ago. While they were adding the racial CQ variants. But they only expanded Nex store. Not mentioning closing the real one.
All of this was only a crowd control from them.
Even this part:
Quote: Incarna
For the same reasons, IncarnaGÇöthe real one with actual meaningful gameplay in itGÇö will be a big step towards the future. For an experience that relies so much on emergence and human interaction, itGÇÖs remarkable that itGÇÖs taken us this long to actually put a face on it. Once Incarna hits its stride, EVE will be more personal, and thus more accessible to general audiences. Visual self-expression in a virtual setting is a core psychological component of gaming; most people need to see their avatars, or something vaguely humanoid, or else they donGÇÖt connect with the game. We were behind the curve and it needs to be addressed for the sake of EVEGÇÖs longevity. We have the technology. Now we need time to add the content that will bring more meaning to the gameplayGÇöagain, without disrupting the space combat simulator that many of you are, or at least were, very much in love withGÇöand without delaying crucial improvements that this core experience desperately needs. And this:
Quote:All of those rooms were built using modular assets, so that the investment made in building the CaptainGÇÖs Quarters will be capitalized on further when more environments get built. They have given us the start of a library of modules, which can be used to flesh out racially themed interiors for all sorts of interesting gameplay.
Oh and we made sure they have lots of lens flares, because as you know, the future is full of lens flares.
Fly safe.
Torfi Frans Taken from here.
My commentary is now only that Torfi Frans is now god knows where doing something about CCP books about lore or something like that. So that is where this WiS thing went, in RP development. And rather RP chat box than actual gameplay with avatars.

There is a saying in my country: Put your MONEY where your MOUTH is. If you aren't willing to do that, then you don't want what you say you want. Period.
It is of course typical that people always have an opinion on what other people should be doing (rather than trying to do things themselves), but CCP is a company, if they aren't giving you what you want, stop giving them money. It's not a hard concept., except for fans of WiS it seems. |

Actually why CCP is making EVE f2p is because those people who left and there may be a bit of EVE baccillus in them still, they could go back and push a bit of those numbers up while sitting in CQ chatting with everyone. But they will not spend a penny on it because its only worth so much for them to spend few minutes in CQ and talk to old friends.

Your subscription fee entitles you to access to the server. That's all. It doesn't come packaged with a promise to cater to your every idiotic whim. Paying a finite amount of money for a specific good or service does not entitle you to anything more than was agreed.
If you go to a restaurant and order an a la carte item, you don't get other items for free based on the fact that you "already paid". You certainly don't get to insist that they build a rooftop deck and install a stripper pole, either.

Somehow this is impossible for some people to understand, yet we understand it easily and completely. Our subscription (whether cash or plex) gives us access to EVE, and that's all. Yet these people thinks it entitles them to more than that.
It doesn't.

I am CURIOUS to know which of these grand thinkers of how to spend other people's money actually pay for their own play time, however....not to beat a horse that died five years ago.
That's kind of tangential to the point though. The fact that there is a market for selling PLEX is responsible for the vast majority of PLEX purchases. From CCP's perspective (and this is pretty much the prevailing understanding of the industry in terms on monetizing online games now) it doesn't really much matter how much the individual user kicks in.
Or, to put it simply, it doesn't matter who is doing the injecting.
The value of player opinions does not rest on whether they plex or pay for their account, specifically because either player contributes a similar financial footprint to EVE's bottom line. This logic is what gave birth to the industry's almost unanimous adoption of the free to play model, because your online game needs content, other players generate content, and players with more disposable are far more likely to throw more of it at you when your game is full of other players, in effect subsidizing them.
The people to listen to are the ones contributing to your bottom line, either by being entrenched enough in the world to encourage others to spend money on your product, or by spending money themselves.
Now, to your second point, yeah, people have unreasonable expectations of WIS given what CCP themselves have said on the subject. I think most of the people in this specific thread have a generally reasonable view of it. Everybody agrees that it would be cool, but most people with half a brain agree that it's not worth doing without significant gameplay attached, and that it seems highly unlikely to be any time soon given CCP's current plans for expanding capsuleer ownership of all portions of the existing space game.
Some people will continue to whine that EVE isn't worth playing without WIS. CCP has shown pretty clearly they don't care about that user, because hey, why should they, they've decided to serve users that don't actually enjoy the core EVE experience by developing (or at least attempting to develop) a range of spinoff products.
CCP does not care if people do not play EVE at this point because it lacks some half baked avatar features. They say "You wanna play an FPS, Okay, we'll go make that by simply copy/pasting the safe, formulaic decisions made by people that have spendt a lot more time trying and failing to do just that"
It's not just the engineering. It's the design. CCP isn't willing to invest, at the current time, in what is bound to be a divisive and highly iterative ambulatory gameplay module for EVE because they don't know how the **** it would work. not because the art and basic engineering is expensive. |

I agree, but with one exception, because they have done research of how it would work. There was idea of two different areas of gameplay, social interactions joined with player establishemnts (with blackjack, games and prostitutes) and avatar exploration of sleeper structures. They had both things on different stages of development and research.

Yo. PopeUrban, you can assume they believe in FPS in the EVE universe with DUST. I am going to say the reasons were almost purely technical, and Playstation 3 was much more viable than the EVE client. I'd say they made a pretty good bit of progress in how that game worked, wouldn't you?
I agree that there is probably no time spent on players who leave because of a lack of avatar gameplay. Why would there be
For me it's not so much a longing for WiS. I see it as a larger issue of keeping CCP based in Iceland as a matter of nationalism or such.
Overall I think you are making two conflicting arguments. You say only the paying customers matter, and then you excuse EVE for the lack of avatar gameplay which would attract more paying players.
Let's not jump through too many hoops here. It's not so much a willful decision to put off avatar gameplay. They couldn't do it if they wanted (in EVE).

The entire "avatar gameplay would attract more players" rationale is something I hear a lot.
The problem is that, given CCP's own statements regarding goals for that gameplay, it really wouldn't retain the people that come specifically for that element.
Avatar based play, if we ever see it in EVE, is not going to be developed to the complexity level of the rest of EVE. It's going to be a one off system meant to supplement, not replace the normal gameplay loop of EVE, and that normal gameplay loop means spending a lot of time in spaceships, training spaceship skills, losing spaceships, and so on.
While it's possible that investing EXTREMELY HEAVILY in to avatar play might achieve that goal, what I'm saying is that CCP has most certainly not shown a willingness to do so. Wanna be a turret gunner? Go play another CCP game. Wanna be a fighter pilot? Go play another CCP game. Wanna play a first person shooter? Go play another CCP game.
Unless CCP is prepared to abandon its efforts to expand in to other sectors of the market, it would make very little sense for them to attempt an undertaking like what something like star citizen is trying to do, with being able to get out, walk around inside everything, etc. etc.
If there's ever Avatar play, it's going to have the same impact on EVE as Odyssey's hacking revamp. It's going to be a small part of the overall larger system. Going much further than that in terms of scope would just be CCP shooting themselves in the foot.
The dream is a good one: Get out of your ship! board other vessels! Steal from that citadel! Drop from orbit and blow up that guy's PI farm!
However its just not a functional reality. CCP abandoned not only the idea of a fully integrated, single game, but the idea of integrating their SEPARATE games a while back because it constrains the desgin space. DUST was an actively worse game because of its EVE integration. Gunjack wouldn't even work with any kind of EVE integration, ditto for valkyrie.
WIS may come at some point down the line, but its not going to look like what people want out of it, and it's not going to happen before "the vision" of the supporting parts of the overall sandbox (player structures, module tiericide, Completely player owned space with player owned concords and player owned whatever else) are complete, and that vision is massive already. |

Well now I agree with you on this. I had more time to think about it over dinner, and for some reason right now WiS doesn't seem so important to have. Considering the cost and benefit. Such as the graphics engine problems (if you can call it one).
Maybe these schisms are the most appropriate after all, where different experiences within the EVE universe are on different platforms.
The problem is we might know this, but newer players won't.
I guess what I'm wondering now is What happened to Legion?

i wouldnt worry too much about the silence as they have a **** tonn of work just to get that smoothed out and workable before even thinking about the bigger picture. no amount of depth, scope or eve integration can hide a garbage fps, no amount at all so imho im delighted to have heard that this is the development approach they are taking. i like my fps's and if it dose not play well in the basics im just not going to play it .<-------emphasis on the period
if they can find an interesting way to get it to feel like a real part of new eden then fantastic , but building a good tecnical fps takes time and theyre better off doing this right.

Making service to be interesting for customers is a goal for every company. That's what CCP does when it announces new features like not-so-really-F2P - they try to attract more customers. And there's no reason for me to pay any extra cash for it - it's just a part of their everyday job.

It has been suggested that if you want WiS, you and people like you could help make that happen by starting a campaign to pay for it.

There were even small plates and glasses from some small doll set. It was a cute little room.

I actually like the captains quarters, and cant wait for them to bring in WIS i also think all the recent vr games are just test projects and ideas for the eventual future of eve, to see how it will all works together
would be nice to sit in station, play mini games and watch all the ships come and go, but if all were going to get is mini, games then its hardly a priority I'm quite happy with the captains quarters for now.
now if the walkin content included boarding, derelict space stations where IE you hacked the station then boarded and brought parts of it back to life this would make for some interesting content, or something along the lines.

So I am one of those players that believe WiS would dramatically increase the player base. That said I don't ever expect to see it. The brief glimmer of hope and the sad panda captains jail was the result of a badly attempted plan to build a vampire game based on a technology demo created by nVida. There was NO WAY that technology could ever scale to allow anything more that the single character instance MMO that is the Captain's Jail cell, There was never a real time multi player demo shown of the vampire game. But CCP bet the farm on that technology. Sad waste of time, money and resources. Unless some serious competitor that threatened the existence of Eve featuring WiS appears WiS will remain just a sure way to start giant threads on the forums when it gets boring around here.
If you really look at the basic premise of Eve, you in space as a ship is the primary way your "character" would be experiencing existence anyways. So you could make the case CCP is delivering most of your experience as your virtual "space self" already. You are just plugged into a goo filled pod and you have become your ship. If you aren't just sitting in the station spinning your ship, which isn't what I believe the first developers of Eve expected being a ship in space would be the primary experience.

We probably wont see anything new with WiS unfortunately.
It's a same because personally I was looking forward to seeing the universe of New Eden from a new angle.
Even with other space games like Elite Dangerous and Star Citizen which both promise to eventually have on foot game play and will probably deliver that promise (in some form), I think EVE would easily have the competitive advantage if it did so too as the EVE universe and art style is far more interesting, and I say this as an avid Elite Dangerous player.
Shame about Dust514, maybe the new FPS in development will scratch that first person perspective in EVE itch.
I spose once the current roadmap (eventually) reaches its conclusion, then perhaps there will be potential to expand it to include WiS.

To be fair, STO is an overall **** show and always has been. The space combat is pretty cool with the four quadrant shields and such, but the ground combat is pretty dang ill considered. it's like they took the city of heroes engine and went "hey, what if everybody was a mastermind and also we made the controls and powers worse?"
The cool parts were the officer and crew card systems. That design was actually really neat, despite having nothing at all to do with the main moment to moment gameplay. Getting a crew of RNG card-people that you could send on missions and do industry with added this satisfying micromanagement that felt appropriate for hthe starship captain theme. The officers were also a neat system, like modules with semi-RNG stats that you could level through experience.
Then they basically watered it down with a hefty helping of linear quest grind and pay to win cash shop ships and crew, which removed any appeal from what few redeeming qualities the game had.
I'd support EVE getting something like that crew system though. Maybe for player stations in a new player owned galaxy or something? Like asymmetric NPC warfare SOV for a new area of space where capsuleers can basically build their own navies and set policies, and **** with other people's little NPC sovlings for ISK in stead of ratting. Ignoring most of the game just to focus on that system gave it this neat sort of roguelike feel, specializing your crew to be good at torture, or piracy, or ******* botany, or whatever you wanted to do, and getting to trade staff with other people to chase but never quite catch that super efficient group of 50 to a hundred staffers. You'd probably need a LOT of new space to support a system like that and still have it be accessible, or have a small guy version of the system like some kinda way to staff your extra ships with non-capsuleer crew to make mini-fleets to fight other people's mini-fleets or something.
And then you could give them deplorable nicknames and send them on suicide missions under the guise of scientific research or something. |

It ain't that far out there. We already know that player buildable gates are in the current actual plans for the game. I seriously doubt they're just going to add gates without a corresponding massive increase in available space to put them. There are realistically only two places where they could, wormholes, and Jove space. Wormholes are out because you can't just permanently break WH space, and Jove space is out because its simply too dang small to support the gold rush. Keep in mind that system is largely numbers and text strings, stuff that is far less art intensive than any kind of meaningful WiS content.
And, I mean, if this new space is just literally empty systems with the ability to build structures it's kind of just a more pain in the ass version of null. My basic assumption is that the ability to build stargates goes hand in hand with some form of player subsidized NPC navy. It's really the only thing the existing null mechanics couldn't offer without breaking the game utterly.
And lets be clear. Being able to walk around inside a station and /dance is not content. It's window dressing that is a complete waste of time and effort without corresponding gameplay. Anyone asking for WiS that is simply cosmetic hasn't been paying attention to literally everything CCP has ever said about WiS. Specifically, that its not something they're prepared to do until they can deliver it with a substantial gameplay impact to justify the massive effort that implementation would take. |

sounds like there is nothing happening anytime soon with this area of eve but while i am here i am going to give my opinion and the opinion of another eve player i live with. he never even knew of captains quarters until i showed him its...OK. why? the interaction is very limited. when CCP actually decides to put time into this the bare minimum should be an area in stations/citadels where capsuleers can congregate and show off their avatar in a bar or pub like setting. some other things that can be added that would immensely improve this experience is an arcade game either eve based or a pacman or pinball or something similar. add in a pool table where we can challenge each other or even put some of these in HS stations. This would be a great way to show of your avatar and maybe a bigger incentive to spend more isk on avatar clothing if the avatar is actually used and interacted with. |

b) only if it's VR
c) no because internet spaceships
d) go play something else
Originally, when it was about creating the ultimate sci-fi world, there were plenty of prototype videos and screenshots of what was in store. But then a very loud group of players, and some terrible management decisions, decided it was better to let the game go stale to the point where it's now "worth" giving it away for free.

The STO duty officer system is one of the few good things about that game. It's what CCP should have done with Teams, but instead trashed the idea. CCP should revisit Teams to make it more like duty officers; they could tie the missions to EVE lore perhaps? It was a good game system, not too demanding on resources.

Was Second Life's original goal to create the biggest sci-fi universe that allows you to do anything you can imagine? If so then maybe it'd be appropriate.
People are asking for something that CCP themselves aimed for, were prepared to implement, but then executed so poorly and in the worst way possible to the point where so many fans lost confidence in their ability to do so.

It would be cool, but it will never happen. Why? Because a vocal minority of the player base threw their toys out of the pram last time WiS was worked on, so CCP probably has ZERO incentive to work on it further.
The only way I see this changing is if Alpha's bring in a huge surge of players who want to stay. All of these new players are going to ask the same question and if they collectively and very vocally outweigh the bitter oldies who torpedoed WiS the first time round then CCP might just revive the idea. |

My reply to this line of argument remains the same as it was a year ago. Wait, it's two years now. Heh. Anyway: If you really believe that there's such a huge untapped demand for WiS from people who will pay money for it, create a kickstarter.
Eh eh I know of a guy who created such kickstarter. A spaceships game meant to also come with first person gameplay included. With stations, relicts, exploration planets...
Now, a couple years later, he raised $100M (December 2015) and still growing and that game has several playable portions.
So... yes. There's some vague, mild demand for such kind of space-sim game...

I really don't know why CCP is not expanding WiS. From an economic view it seems to be a good thing. They can introduce goods in the store like throphies, skins for your rooms et cetera. Clothes would be more appealing if you can show off in a bar or go on a dance floor. And all that extra money is generated with goods that effects EVE Online gameplay not in a bad way in my eyes.
CCP states in the EVE Online experience video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQciMy_Pr0Q) that the game is about people, so why do not give them a proper home? ;) |

I think WiS would be good and adds another dimension to the game.
For example, now gambling sites are no longer allowed, CCP can take over gambling / lotteries by having Gambling Rooms in walk in station. Also some other mini games.
I know I'm gonna get flamed for this, but perhaps one day, they could also add a first person / third person shooter to the walk in station function. That would be cool. If Star Citizen ever comes out, and if it actually comes out as a complete game, then it will be some competition.
The Sandbox Sci Fi market is changing - if you look at all the Sandbox Sci Fi games that are coming out these days, they all have a first-person component to them.
I hope one day, the Cult Following community within Eve Online can explore the possibility of change, and not just resist change and be stuck in old ways. |

It doesn't.
The thing is, WiS has been a part of EVE since CCP started to tease us about Ambulation, which goes a LONG way back. Some of us bought their early vision of one universe where the spaceships were only a part of the whole EVE experience. The industry has proven that the IDEA of a game is more powerful than the game itself, and as such the PCU peaked around the time when they announced incarna, before the drama of the golden ammo and the leaks.
The only thing you're understanding is a narrowed version of what EVE once was, and even though the recent developments may prove you right, some of us still hope that sooner or later they're going to go back to their roots.

Abandoning the Incarna project wasn't because of "bitter oldies". You should join Goons, they're almost as good at twisting facts and rewriting history as you are. That is not at all what happened.
WiS had been in the works for YEARS and along the way they showed us screenshots and short vids that looked interesting. Then when it was finally released it was NOTHING like they showed us, not an a graphical fidelity level, not on a design language level and not on a usability level. It was bland with terrible lighting and only one room, being useless, while frying our videocards.
But that wasn't even the main problem, we're used to CCP fcking up so nothing new there. However, CCP had pretty much stopped development on EVE for quite a while now and had been using EVE money, resources and dev time to create their new love child World of Darkness. WiS wasn't actually meant to be useful, EVE was just used as a testbed to act as an alpha for WoD. So not only did they use our money for it, they wasted something were we all waiting for for YEARS and mis use it in a "lol get rekt EVE, WoD is the new fad" kind of way.
Then there was the whole micro transactions thing where some clown dev (Zinfandel) decided that micro transactions really wasn't the way to go, macro transactions is where it's at with items costing a fckton of money, because "some people buy $1000 jeans dontyouknow".
On top of all this when we asked about when CCP would finally start to invest time and effort into EVE and bring us some very much needed updates and rebalancing the answer was "well, that's going to take 18 months, deal with it".
The icing on the cake: the "fearless" memo that had been circulating in CCP, from the CEO, where he pretty much stated "let the idiots whine on the forums, we'll keep doing what we're doing to fck them. It might take a few months but in the end they'll shut up and keep giving us money".
So no, it wasn't a bittervet minority somehow stopping WiS. It was CCP fcking up on such a large scale, all at the same time, that the effects of that colossal mess up reverberate to this day. If CCP would make a useful, cool and interactive WiS that wouldn't waste development on the core game itself we'd love to have it. |

I would be very interested to see CCP make some smaller interactions in EVE. Chess games that could be bet on and that sort of thing.
I would be very interested to see if Valk makes as much money as cosmetic items in Eve.

This is simply what folks like you WANTED to think. Even back then, some of us were more realistic about what CCP could do with EVE. While the people at fan fest were cheering (fanfest crowds are not a good representation of the EVE community btw, most EVE players don't read forums let alone go to fanfest), I and others were remembering CCPs failed attempt at atmospheric flight and all the other stuff they suggested might be a part of the game at past fanfests but that never materialized.
It's the "immersion" crowd that wants WiS. Not all of us want that level of immersion, some of us are fine with our ships being our avatars. WiS to me would be like taking a game about formula 1 racing and adding the ability to get out of the car and walk around the track or go into the stands of play as the pit crew (whooo so exciting). But some of us don't care anything about any of that, we just want to race cars.
Been saying the above for years, but you just can't get the immersion folks to understand that not everyone is like them. The same people find themselves perplexed at the idea that Star Citizen and other space games are not enticing to some of us. Yay space fighter dogfights and FPS gameplay, things that don't interest me at all. I loved Wing Commander as a kid, I might even play SC with my corpmates if i can get a system that can handle it, I'm sure it will be fun, but I'm not salivating over it, I like being a space submarine captain in Fluid space.
All ofwhich is why i wish they'd hurry the hell up and finish SC, because there are lots of "misplaced SC jocks" playing EVE because they don't think they have any alternative. They get the immersive space dogfighting and FPSing game they crave, and those of us who don't care for that stuff can do our own thing in a game we like. Everyone's happy....
.. yea I know that won't happen, people being how they are we're going to hear about WiS for the next 20 years even after all these other 'competitors' exist as EVE's immersion craving crowd continues to beg for it while ignoring the others games that already have it (like the did with Star Trek Online). Sometimes wishful thinking is relaxing though.

You will get your wish when SC 3.0 comes out with trade missions and planetary landings.
Engine and gameplay wise, SC is light years ahead of EVE.
Content, not so much.
Things will just get more developed as SC progresses.
I mean the only reason I'm subbed now is to get a character ready for F2P EVE.
When SC 3.0 comes out I will play that instead of EVE.
Who know, I'm hoping F2P EVE brings a lot of old friends out of the wood work.
But I have a feeling that EVE is pretty much done with pushing the tech envelope.
I'm not asking that they do as SC currently does a better job anyways.
It's pretty much downhill from here. I suppose F2P will keep the lights on for a bit longer.

Yea yea,we get it, you don't like EVE and (being the intensely spiteful sort) want it to die so you can laugh at people you don't like..
I think it's insane to play a game you don't like simply out of spite, but people do a lot of insane things in life, if they didn't I wouldn't have an IRL job lol.
As far as content goes, EVe's content is it's people, the spaceships and missions and expeditions etc are just backdrop/eye candy/filler. Which is why I say I'm hopeful about SC, it provides something for people who need a dev created story to enjoy, or 'immersive' game mechanics to have fun.

What I mean to say concisely is that in order for EVE to stay relavent by 2020, they would have needed to have developed core technology for WiS years ago.
Now it's too late and they shouldn't bother.
They did have this awesome vision I will have to admit, but they screwed the pooch by no delivering.
Also putting their flagship FPS game on a console at the end of its life cycle was a terrible idea.
The word is still out for Valkyrie...
Really SC already does much of what EVE promised to do and much better by 3.0
Unless EVE can get a $100 million budget for an engine upgrade they should just try to not over extend and just try to stay afloat for another 5 years.

Not all of us need those things. Apparently that's hard/impoosible for some to grasp
To be fair, EVE isn't a bad game.
I just find the player base worthy of dislike.
And the the people on the forums even more so.
And some of those people like Tippia have left.
I mean I met some great people on EVE that I'm still in contact on a regular basis.
It's just that if I were a billionaire, I'd buy CCP. Fire the developers and delete everyone's account for spite.
It would be the ultimate justice for all the toxic behavior that happens on the forums.
So EVE dying is of interest to me.
But if they are going to let me play for free, I'm pragmatic enough to actually use it to entertain myself.
I just find it amusing that people defend EVEs stagnation when it obviously is facing issues with retention.
"Entitlement" is a euphemism for "I hate the way you play and it makes me cry like a baby".

What you don't understand is that EVE doesn't need any of that. EVE was actually dated when it started in 2003, it's NEVER been cutting edge. The people who like it and play it don't care about that.
A good example is "graphics", people complain about how dated they look and what not, but the most fanatical EVE players play ZOOMED OUT. Hell, the only time I see any of my own ships is when I'm docked. Because for people like me, even the SHIP avatar is irrelevant, as much as a pawn on a chess board would be.
EVE offers something unique to a certain niche market of people (as opposed to the more mainstream scifi experience SC promises ), and that market isn't going away. Themain threats to EVE have never been it "falling behind",it's been CCP's inept attempts to mainstream it. WiS was one such attempt, and it's good it died.
If it does go away for some reason, expect EVE players to move to SC, using their money and lobbying skills (as well as their world renowned skill at finding the cracks in a game...in order to us them to screw with people) as leverage to get Cloud Imperium to change the game "to be more like EVE" in a reversal of how things happen here lol. If you were smart you would WANT EVE to continue so the kinds of people you obviously (and publicly) don't like don't follow you types to SC and gain some level of influence with it's developers...
Just look at what former EVE players did in Star Trek Online and Elite:Dangerous...

To be fair, SC is a dictatorship by Chris Roberts. He basically creates micromanagement hell for his manager who he refuses to listen to them and forced them to do what he wants regardless of its feasible.
So unless he died, he's not going to listen to voices that deviate from his vision.
E:D was the same way and I got fed up with David's vision so I'm not playing that anymore.
And to be fair EVE's vision is by committee so they are wishy washy about the direction the gam will go.
And to be fair people still play Ultima Online on private servers now, but really... Not innovating EVE only results in stagnation.
Those who have voiced for it are only encouraging the decline of the game.
Going F2P is innovation though, but it's a sign that the subscription model isn't sustainable long term.
I'm not arguing that CCP should make WIS. It's too late for that.

Content, not so much.

It always had issues with retention, even when it was growing, sio that it nothing new.
And no one is defending stagnation, simply saying that many people's ide of 'progress' isn't actually progress, it's an attempt to mainstream a niche game. It's like saying "this biker bar would be WAY better is it turned into a Starbucks" lol. Some of us are saying "EVE should progress, yes, into a better spaceship focused pvp-centric game, not some mushy space barbie hand holding game". Rejecting YOUR idea of progress is not rejecting progress.
But like i said, I get it, you don't like EVE (it's EVE's Game mechanics that attracts it's crowd) and have (in find prejudiced fashion) passed judgement on 10s of thousands of people you don't know. But somehow you can't just leave it alone and play something you actually like. This is why I say i know that EVEN after SC ships, the WiS complainers will still be here. Because (as Star Trek Online demonstrates), the whole "I'll leave for that competeing space game" screed WiS types shout at every turn is a lie.
You yourself are proof, as you said in the SC thread, some of SC is playable, yet here you still are, coming back after several public quitting bouts. If YOU can't stop coming back to something that causes so much hate within you, why do you think others won't as well?
While I don't know you, I've seen the type, the folks who don't like certain people but can't stand to not be around them (like a feminist in a strip club,or a vegan who can't seem to stay out of Outback Steakhouse ). It kind of makes the whole "they are toxic and I wish they'd go away" thing a lie, does it not?
If EVE's "toxic" community went away you'd just go and find another one, because you seem to need them. |

I'd like to quote Winston Churcill
"Indeed, it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except all other forms that have been tried from time to time."
E:D was just a bad attempt at grind for content and space communism.
SC on the other hand has objectivity more diverse game play.
Currently I can wake up in Port Olisar, walk and get in my space ship, go shoot NPCs or other players, then if I so choose to land at another station, get out of my ship and then shoot other player first person.
That in itself is much more than the failed vision of EVE's WIS.
However, that's all you can do in 2.5 right now in a nutshell.
However when 3.0 comes out (cargo and planetary interactions) things will get really interesting.
But CiG has slow development, I won't argue that. So it won't be until mid 2017 before that update.
So if CCP is offering F2P then I'm not going to be so dogmatic to pass it up.
Again, it's not that EVE was bad, it just not worth the $15 a month.

If indeed CIG is a dictatorship, and indeed EVE is more like democracy and its seen in its structure of the game, then the people who try both would stay with EVE longer, but SC would get more followers in a short timespan to then burn out fast.
Its because democracy caters to many different groups and developers must make many groups at least mildly satiated, while still providing constant changes and evolution. In dictatorship only one, strongest group is preferred, that gives the best applauds for what dictator is doing. After this group is exploited, game becomes stale, there is no more followers with new ideas because dictator doesnt cater to many groups, doesnt listen to them, and people move along somewhere else, bored. If different groups will initially be there, only this one group that dictator is initially going after will remain, although also reduced.
From history you can see that Icelandic people had this. I dont know if that is in their cultural heritage or what, but certain aspects of EVE are remainding me of it.

Why would you need to "get a character ready for F2P EVE"? You can use your existing character. as a alpha clone; any excess skills are simply ignored and hey presto, you have a max SP alpaha character on day 1.

Good question.
Apparently my racism for Caldari characters has proven to be problematic.
Because my favorite play style used drones and , I simply trained all my Caldari characters into drone boats.
So I just deleted my throw away ganker alt and created a Galente one only Galente F2P race can get drones 5.
I suppose I could have waited to the 15th or just created a new account altogether, but I wanted to keep this on one account.
And I was bored and impatient.

It depends on how good the dictatorship is and how bad the democracy is.
I mean if I'd rather live in Napoleonic France than Liberia.
The reason people have given Chris over $100 million cash is because they believe in his vision and/or leadership.
While EVE has many ideas put forth by the community and even has elections, but have they really had an overall direction and/or vision for the game that appeals to the majority of its user base.
I mean they get things sort of done but they fail with delivering on promises because they have no dictator forcing them to meet his vision. Lead devs come and go and the vision changes somewhat each time.
In that regard CiG has the advantage that Chris is telling his managers they must complete certain features or else even if the managers claim it's not feasible.

Dictatorship and democracy is named because of the rules it employs. Enforcing rules is mandatory to call it one or the other. If the enforcing is broken, you can say the system is failing and in need of repair.
You cant change from one rule to the other on whim because the way EVE is designed enforces democratic rule on ground level, by players fitting in the game mechanics. The discussion and conflicts inside EVE is never ending process, but it assures that everyone even with conflicting interests will be listened and their will enforced at least partially.

There is no Legion anymore.
There is Project Nova, which has taken the stats on integration of Dust with Eve to conclude that Eve players don't want an Eve integrated FPS.
So Project Nova is just an FPS that is aiming to be a high quality free FPS. Integration with Eve isn't really in the design plans.
