Hi, I want to buy and fit a ship that will act as my tractor/salvager for my main while I do missions. I will use it on a second account, and fortunately I can use 2 pc's side by side, well until dad gets back from work then I have to put both on one pc. I am Caldari spec'd on both accounts, but will be prepared to train in another race if I really need to.
I have heard that the Cormorant ship is quite good for this. Any advice will be cool, also how to fit even better.
Thanks

I use the Gallente Catalyst for salvage, 3 TB and 5 salvagers does the job. In the lows I have cargo expanders and the mids I have a AB and cap charger.
You do have to manage the cap in a destroyer though as all that will rip your cap out if you are not careful.
I used to run a Vexor for it, pros were larger cargo bay and drones to help on missions, but the cons were less high slots.

Can I use a MWD on the ship, never tried in missions. Are they allowed ?
I will not need any weapons on it as my main will ensure that all threats are neutered 1st.

Edited by: Maxpie on 22/03/2007 15:11:34 I fly Minmatar, so I use a Thrasher, the destroyer for looting/salvage. It has 8 high slots, so I fit 4 tractor beams and 4 salvagers, AB, cap recharger and usually a nano and inertial stab in low, sometimes cargo expanders, but with 400m3, I usually dont need them. Of course, I have no qualms with leaving cap charges behind, and they are what usually take up too much space.
You cannot use MWD in deadspace. If you want to use it, bookmark the area during the mission and fly back and loot it afterwards, which is what I do, though I still find the AB sufficient (MWD tends to make me bounce too far off the cans)

I suggest using a ferox. High: 4 * salvager 3 * tractor Med: MWD AB rest cap recharger low: Cargo expanders
With this you do not run out of cap, can use in deadspace and normal and have over 600m3.

When I restarted running missions before Christmas I ended up at the agent I was running back in '04. I'd left my first BS there so decided to use it. Hence was born the Lootageddon. 4 Salvagers, 4 tractors and enough cargo space to hold everything from L3 Extravaganza -- (Battle hardened industrialist)

hey m8, use a Vexor or a Destroyer class ship. Good with high slots (5 are more than enough to pull and salvage on the Vexor) and enough lows for cargo. With full rack you can go to 1000+ which is very nice for the larger missions. Fit an AB and you're good to go. MWD doesn't work.
Stay away from BC/BS.. too slow. unless you like pulling your hair ...
Good luck with salvaging!

Destroyers are nice ships for salgaging.
If youre gallente, you might give exequror a try (can easily go over 1000m3 cargo space) and gets 2x salvager 2x tractor, which is enough.

Actually I have made my cyclone into a salvager when I bought my hurricane. I have 5 salvagers and 3 tracor beams in high, fit mids for ewar with AB, 2 webs and tracking disrupter, lows I had istabs and nano's.
Of course I am in low sec so thats why i chose the setup. As for speed, it works great. I can tractor 3 wrecks and head for the 4th. I never have any down time between looting/salvaging.

if you are salvaging then a 6 high cruiser is best

I think destroyers all around are the better ships to use. I personally use my alt in a Coercer (Amarr Dest):
High: 6 Salvager 1 2 Tractor Beam 1 Mid: AFB Lows: 2 T2 CPU Enhancers 1 T2 PDU 1 CARGO RIG RIG: 3 Salvage Tackle 1 Rigs
I normally boost cap from my main to my alt keeping her from from running out of cap. If you run out of cargo space, I will tow a jettisoned can and salvage with one tractor beam. Cool thing is with 6 salvagers on one wreck, it is roughly the same time to real them in as with my normal 1 tractor & 3 salvagers per can (times 2). I collect and place the loot in a jet can for later pick up by my hauler. Works like a charm.

MWDs do work as long as you remember to make a bookmark of each lcation youw ant to loot/salvage. Go to agent and end the mission and all that will be left of the mission is a bunch of wrecks sitting out in space.
There is no longer any dead space areas, so a MWD works just fine. Speeded up my time considerably on missions where they start far apart, or if had to trail them behind me.

Battleships definately make for the best salvaging ships, not like you are going to lose it anyway, so cost shouldnt be much of an issue. I use a megathron on my loot/salvager alt myself, 3 beams, 5 salvagers, AB, a few cargo expanders (I got room for 1700m3 or so, which is enough for most L4s).
If you are on a very tight budget, by all means, go for a destroyer, but BS = win.

Cormorant can fit 4 Salvagers and 4 Tractors as well as having a lot of mid slots for cap rechargers, AB or MWD and cap battery. Low slot I put a nano or OD in it. goes 500 m/s with AB and has 450 m3 of cargo space.
Its the space version of a vacuum cleaner.

I had been using a Cat' for salvaging, worked fine. then bumped up to an Eris Just to be a bit faster, everything else is exactly the same on it. also, the headlight is nice.

Yeah, but you're blowing an extra 60 - 100 mil to get less agility/speed, and possibly less highslots. You're right that you're not going to lose it, but 100 mil is still a lot of salvage to make up for. I've honestly never had a level 4 go much over 800 m3, and thats with those huge cap charges.

Battleships are definitely the worst choice for salvaging. They're too slow and too expensive. And I doubt you'd fit Salvage Tackles on it. And if you don't fit Salvage Tackles you're just wasting your time. And btw. cargo space is not an issue with salvaging.
Like most of the others I am using Destroyers from Salvaging day one. Exequror seems to be a valid alternative. Currently I am using a Coercer with
4 TBs 4 Salvagers AB / MWD Cargo Expander Cap Power Relays 3 Salvage Tackle rigs

The best ship in the game for looting and salvaging is the Eris: High: 4 tractor, 4 salvagers (or 5/3 or 3/5) Med: mwd, cap recharger Low: 4* named cargo expanders
2 km/s speed, fast locking, fast warp speed, agile and 1100 m3 cargo space.
The only problem: if you cant already use interdictors, the training time might be a little to much just for salvaging

In my short experience of level IV¦s(like 30-40 missions only) I have already stumbled over loads of missions requiring me to go back a second time with my 820m^3 Catalyst, some like Attack of the drones had me return twice = major pain in the behind = Destroyers does not cut it...
And if one run level III¦s and salvage with a fitting BS one can simply run so many more missions in a row before having to do the salvage/loot.
BS = very cost-effective in the long-run if you run alot of missions.

I've tried using destroyers to loot/salvage (I can fly all 4 races of destroyers), and the relatively small cargo hold has blocked me ...
Since I loot everything in my level 4 missions (I need the junk for reprocessing, that's how I find the minerals I need for my ammo production ...), I usually find myself with 1000m¦+ of loot for a single mission, and sometimes much more than that ...
So I use an Exeqror, with 3 Cargo Expander IIs in the lows and 3 Salvage Tackle rigs, with Gal Cruiser 4 I get 1741m¦ of cargo hold, much better for me.

Thanks for all of your responses. I noticed on the Cormorant that there is only one low slot, however I decided in the end to use this ship and I bought one. I am not too worried about cargo space as I shall be keeping to high sec unloading stuff in the nearest station and then going back. I am more concerned about increasing the speed, so I am concentrating on the skills regarding that. You have mentioned various fittings that I have never used, and I am not really sure about their functions. I bought a nanofibre t1 fitting, but after fitting it and going for a spin I did not notice any difference in the ship's abilities. I shall look up the items database and try and work out what is available and what will be best to get for the mid slots, and the one low slot. I have already put an afterburner in the 1st mid slot.
It appears that my priorities on this ship will be, cap and speed. If any of you would be kind enough to advise me further, and tell me a more user friendly description/purpose of the following stuff that you all have mentioned above;
Nano CPU Enhancers Sensor Boost Cap Recharger / Cap Battery / Cap Power Relays Inertia Stab OD (low slot)
Thanks again for all your advice and help.

Edited by: Andrue on 23/03/2007 12:14:38 I'd agree that going out and buying a BS just to salvage is probably not a great idea but if you happen to have one lying around that you won't use for anything else (like me) then it's less of a problem. As a salvage platform (ie;what you can fit, cargo hold size) the BS is very good. A little more speed would be nice but it's not a problem. -- (Battle hardened industrialist)

I use a Rupture to salvage:
4x tractor beams 2x salvagers 3x salvage rigs
With the salvage rigs and my salvaging skills I usually salvage the stuff on the first or second try so I'd rather have more tractor beams as I found when I went 3/3 I was always waiting for the next wreck to get to me to loot and start salvaging and was only running 1 or 2 of the salvagers at a time. The mids I'm using shield mods and a AB atm since I salvage while my corp does the missions and that way if I do get aggro I'll last long enough to get out of there. Though I'm thinking of upgrading to mods that help out my corp instead and just rely on coming into the mission last to save me from agro.

I also use a Dessie. Use only 3 tractors and 3 salvagers as that seems to be enough to handles the wrecks the way they are spread out. In mid I have both a MWD and a AB as sometimes I finish and close out a mission so I can use the MWD (I'd forget to put it on otherwise )

i played with some set ups last night and this is what i was getting. i have salvaging 4 by the way
solo mission/salvage: i turned the mission in and hopped in my Maller. I was salvaging practically on the 1st try every time, no more than 2 ever. with MWD on i am about 450m/s which is good cause that means I won't fly faster than the tractor beam. took me 14min to salvage and loot lvl 4 The Blockade Sanasha
3 tractor, 3 salvage 10mn MWD, rest cap chargers all T2 cargoexpanders 3 salvage rigs
mission in raven and salvage/support in domi with alt: salvaging is done 2-3 min after i finish the mission so really no time loss from running missions. I lock on to raven release hvy shield bots and commence to shooting everything.
3 tractor, 3 salvage 100mn AB, cap chargers 1 LAR, 1 MAR and the rest cargo/cpr no rigs
i am very pleased with either outcome since i am not taking my main from making me isk.

I second this recommendation. I personally use Cormies. For the drones and mercenaries missions I use a Vexor with a 2/3 high slot layout (tractor beams/salvagers). Once I train Salvaging to level 5 I'll probably switch to Exequrors using a 2/2 slot layout and rig it with salvage tackles.

At the moment I use a Flycatcher - the Interdictor version of the Cormorant.
High: 4 tractor/4 salvager (or some variant) Mid: AB, MWD, 3 named cap rechargers Low: Cargo Expander II
Rigs: Salvage Tackle and Cargo
Over 600m3 for cargo - cruises at 470m/s (with my skills) so you can tow cans while looting and salvaging and moving to collect new ones - AB allows faster movement if looting in deadspace before the mission is over. I'd like more cargo capacity but I like the speed in collecting cans. The cap rechargers are required since the tractors and salvagers will drain alot of cap and I often have all of them running simultaneously.
