As for sounds, it's also explained there. To give the pilot the best immersion to maximize his/her efficiency, the computer compensates for the soundless vacuum by generating sound in your brain. If you read the backstory you'll find that most of the ships were designed before pod technology. Then when caldari traded the pod technolgy from the jove the old designs sticked "windows included". That just leaves 2 choices on up and down. Might as well just choose one at random and have it universally recognized. Why do you think we have ASCII and Unicode? Because of this these cans wouldn't be stable in warp.
