Are faction Frigates, be it navy or pirate, worth it or are they just symbols of wealth and/or experience or boredom?
I mean is a Gallente Navy Comet (30 mil) really a better combat ship than an Ishkur (20 mil) for example? |

Any T2 frig kicks any faction frig's ass, badly. The faction frigs are nice and all, but not nearly worth their "going price" at all.
Well, they certainly are better as the T1s, and you don't need any extra skills to fly them, so they do have some appeal. But not at 30 mil a pop. Not for the "common user" anyway. Well, a fully rigged faction frig is something scary indeed, but that might mean something more akin to 100 mil per ship... wouldn't you rather have picked a battleship with T1 fitings instead ?
The only interesting faction frigs I.M.O. are the Slicer (damage), Hookbill (tank) and Cruor (OMGNOSWEB). _ MySkills | Module/Rig stacknerfing explained |

Just as a note, when he says tank he means as in a T2 XL sheild booster running passivly (that is with setup devoted just to tanking and guns though (no tackling gear... in a setup with a scram and AB you can still get bout 70hp/sec), and when he says OMGNOSWEB he means draining 10 cap per second with just 2 NOS and having a web range out to 15km with standard webs.
I think they are pretty awsome ships even if they are expensive. Obviously not as good a t2 but I still like them just as much.
Some of them also look frickin awsome.

He means that the passive recharge of the shields is equal to the shield boost provided by a T2 XL booster.
The best use by far for faction ships is to get a fleet of pure faction ships together (cruisers and frigs are easiest) and rampage through 0.0 getting chased by locals who want faction killmails. /waves to Smash and Roadkill!

Oh, I was very much there with my Rocket Spamming Worm of DoomÖ
The Worm is a great novelty frigate as with 3 missile velocity rigs it fires the fastest missiles of any frigate in the game (Crows only have 2 rig slots and technically the Condor can tie with my Worm, who would ever rig up a Condor?) Almost instantaneous rocket hits from 20km away and sniping up to 80km with light missiles makes for a fun ship to play with.

For the ship collector, yes.
Some of them have bonuses (Cruor) that can make them interesting in PvP, but they're Tech 1 ships, with Tech 1 resistances, and are basically a buffed version of their racial Tier 3 counterpart (Hookbill = Merlin with +50% hitpoints, etc).
All in all, they are a bit better than a "plain old T1" frigate for PvE (I can do level 2 missions in my faction frigs with ease while I struggle with my "basic" T1 frigs in the same missions), but for PvP they're a painful ISK-sink ...
BTW, I'm a ship collector, I currently own all 9 frigates and 2 of the 9 cruisers, still working on the ISKs and LPs for the battleships

Hookbill = Caldari
Comet = Gallente
Slicer = Amarr
Firetail = Minmatar
Cruor = Blood Raiders
Daredevil = Serpentis
Worm = Guristas
Succubus = Sanshas
Dramiel = Angel
The Daredevil and the Dramiel are both designed by the Angels, according to their description, but the Daredevil was "loaned" to the Serpentis.

Cruor Mottled, dark red, and shaped like a leech, the Cruor presents a fitting metaphor for the Blood Raiders' philosophy. Designed almost solely to engage in their disturbingly effective tactic of energy draining and stasis webbing, this ship is a cornerstone in any effective Blood Raider fleet - and could play an intriguing role in more standard ones.
Special Ability: 50% reduction in Small Energy Turret capacitor use
Amarr Frigate Skill Bonus: 10% bonus to Energy Vampire drain amount per level Minmatar Frigate Skill Bonus: 10% bonus to Stasis Webifier activation range per level
Worm Korako 'The Rabbit' Kosakami, Gurista leader, has a particular love for stealing the Caldari's ship designs, souping them up, and turning them on their creators. With the Worm, he has taken the Merlin design so familiar to Caldari pilots and turned it into a defensive powerhouse with increased electronic warfare capabilities.
Special Ability: 50% bonus to Rocket and Light Missile velocity
Caldari Frigate Skill Bonus: 5% bonus to Rocket and Light Missile kinetic damage per level Gallente Frigate Skill Bonus: 5% bonus to Small Hybrid Turret damage per level.
Daredevil Little hard data is to be had on the Daredevil's exact origin, but it is believed that Guardian Angel engineers created it to serve as a defensive complement to the Cartel's Dramiel frigate. In both flair and utility it closely resembles its counterpart, but it eschews offensive capabilities in favor of greater defensive potential and stronger armor plating. A tough nut to *****.
Special Ability: 25% bonus to Small Hybrid Turret damage
Gallente Frigate Skill Bonus: 7.5% bonus to Small Hybrid Turret tracking speed per level Minmatar Frigate Skill Bonus: 10% reduction in MicroWarpdrive capacitor penalty per level
Dramiel The Dramiel is the most long-standing and often-used ship design in the Angel Cartel's vast repertoire of vessels. A frigate workhorse if ever there was one, this sharp-tusked, dangerous beauty can sting unimaginably hard if one is not prepared for its assault.
Special Ability: 25% bonus to Small Projectile Turret damage Minmatar Frigate Skill Bonus: 5% bonus to Small Projectile Turret damage per level Gallente Frigate Skill Bonus: 7.5% bonus to Small Projectile Turret tracking speed per level
Succubus The Succubus is one of the most feared frigates ever to harrow the spacelanes and asteroid belts of civilized space, and with good reason: tales abound of its superiority over ships twice or three times its size. Whether you believe this to be fact or rumor, the Succubus will still strike fear in your heart.
Special Ability: 50% reduction in Small Energy Turret capacitor use
Amarr Frigate Skill Bonus: 5% bonus to Small Energy Turret Damage per level Caldari Frigate Skill Bonus: 5% bonus to EM missile damage per level.

some of them are pretty good at actual combat but mostly they just look pretty. i used a cruor for a while and killed many T1 and t2 frigs in it. With it's nos/web bonus's it's a pretty mean frig killer. other than that i can only see small improvements.

Edited by: Silpher on 02/07/2007 12:30:06 Faction frigs are meant to be flown by frigate specialists. Without proper skills, knowladge of their roles, and significant experience in frigate piloting, the average pilot immediately thinks, "oh, this is just for collecting/fun/splurging/prestige/etc etc."
For example, the Dramiel.
-=-- The roll of this frig is as a heavy damage dealer/anti-tackle; *not* tackle. The point of the bonuses is to ultimately give you 6 high slots, with only giving you 5. With perfect matari frigate skill bonuses, those 2 rails = 3 with the fitting reqs of 2. 3 Rails, 3 launchers.
Scram is hardly necissary given it's role and you aren't fast enough to keep up with t2 frigates. Once you pound on them, they'll just run away. Thus, it's roll as an anti-tackler, especially given the tracking speed of your turrets for those interceptors. You can fit a scram if you want, but you might prefer saving that slot for something else, and letting the true tacklers do the tackling.
The only time you should expect to get kills with this is 1) being a part of a gang/fleet and just helping on damage on the primary or 2) 1 vs 1 against a not-so-intelligent opponent.
Frigs are usually ignored in gang vs gang engagements (don't flame me, I know they get attacked, but rarely are they a primary), so what you want to be doing is chasing/killing off the tacklers who are tying down your mates, so they can warp-out->warp-in when primaried.
You want to tank it so if you are taking damage you have time to brush off the tacklers and warp out. Whether you shield or armor tank it is entirely a personal preference. Passive shield tank works, and armor tank is cool too, freeing up your mids for e-war, or whatever else you want.
---
Sure, assault frigs are a bit tougher, but you can't say that they pwn faction frigates, especially givin the fact that training assault ships aren't commonly trained to 5. And an interceptor has no chance against most faction frigates. Ofc, all of this depends on the pilots experience and skills.
Also, faction frigs aren't meant to be fit cheap. 3 rigs slots vs 2 is an extra 15-30m in rigs. And the bonuses they recieve combined with this make them extremely comparable to assault frigs. I would also suggest using at least a hybrid faction fitting (tank and ammo, namely.)
It all depends on who goes up against who with what skills in what ships with what fittings, as does every engagement.
Faction frigates are far from useless, and anyone to claim that they are shouldn't be flying them anyways. --- The FAIR MARKET MOVEMENT!

They are never worth it except for the sheer fun and showcase... Faction Battleships are cool because we don't have T2 Battleships and you kind of need a capital to get a bigger ship class. Faction frigates just gets eaten by AF's, Cruisers, Battlecruisers etc etc - I'm a nice guy!! and OMG I love Team Tuxford for the speedbalancing... |

I'd love to see a cruor fitted with dual domination webs overheating them for a 29.25km 99% webbing range... obviously as part of a gang, but it'd still rule
and yes I know a huginn/rapier can get 78km, but everyone knows that, no one expects it from a frig :)

I've flown my cruor in combat a few times. it's a beautiful anti inty ship if they inty requires nos to run it's guns. dual faction webs and talismans and u have a sexy little frig. But, at a little over 100mil it's a lot to get insta popped by many ships. Mostly they are just nice to fly because they're a bit different.

I beg to differ.
A Taranis pilot looted my can in empire space while I was right next to it, I was in a daredevil. He left with flames coming out of his ship, I lost 90% shields, no resists.
He said it has been a while since he played but nonetheless he lost.
Just a reference...
On the rest of the post;
Are they worth their price?
Combat wise, never.
For the p33n effect, hell yes.
For fun when someone sees you in one and find they are losing their ship to a faction ship when they weren't expecting it; PRICELESS. ----------------------------

I've always said that the cruor's bonuses should be reversed or that it should get a third mid... that way it could actually outrun its target
but just imagine a 50% nos range boost with a doubled effectiveness on the web... one 10km web at 95% (dropping a 6km/s inty to 300m/s), 1 20km or faction scrambler (2-points) at 10km, and 3+ small nos, at 9.75km... yummy slow death
