Its true, PvP and industry need eachother.
Also to the "I'm a carebear but I'm training for PvP" people.. As someone else said, train propulsion jamming and get out there! Finding a corp is an immense help.
I started PvP within days of activating my account, immediately after training for an afterburner and a warp scram. Been pirating ever since :P

40 years old, with 4 year old (in May) carebear character. No I didn't buy it, I've had it since day one...according to the link in my sig, I'm about 15th "most skilled" in EVE...but that's just points, not experience.
Getting very bored of missions...especially since every patch CCP make them less challenging, less rewarding, and plain and simply less FUN. Going to experiment with exploration...but again, to really reap rewards, that has to be out in 0.0.
Had some bad experiences with gankers...if all of 0.0 turns out to be like that, and there's nothing to come back to in Empire...poor ol' Grey Area may finally be laid to rest.
*sigh*
No, you can't have my stuff. ---

Edited by: Grey Area on 04/04/2007 22:28:33 I could live with PVP if it was more gladiatorial and less "gank gank gank". In FPS games where it is the player's SKILL that really tells, triumphs against overwhelming odds ARE possible. Not in EVE. It's a numbers game: bring more ships, and you win. Yes, you might be able to defeat a MARGINALLY larger squad if you are better skilled and co-ordinated...but odds of 2, 3, 4 etc to 1...you're not going to FIGHT, you're just going to DIE...and then have someone insinuate that they have a larger ***** than you because they swamped you with a horde of ships.
If I'm outCLASSED, I will admit it, and congratulate my opponent on a battle well fought. If I am simply outNUMBERED...there is no skill in that...and I'm not even interested in being on the winning side, if it's just about sheer weight of numnbers for the win. ---

Bleah...sorry to disagree with you here but FPS skill? Surely you are kidding here? I played CS:Source from release as well as CoD and outside the TGS server found them (more CS than CoD) to be pointless twitch fights filled with the various hacks (aimbot/wall hacks etc) that make them quite boring. Headshot from across the map thru intervening walls....wheeeeee...fun city .
If you want to discuss "skill" in games...Steel Beasts, EECH, IL-2, Falcon IV, Silent Hunter 3, and PBEM wargaming require serious tactical and flight/simulation skills....but its a specialized niche as most gamers don't have the patience for "realism". I would even go so far to say that the majority of EvE players would be hard pressed to takeoff/land an aircraft or navigate a sub in "realistic" mode let alone actually put lead on target or a torpedo into a ship with realism enabled . But then again I use a full FCS (rudder pedals, joystick, throttle) since I am a true propeller-head dork about things like that.
You want gladiators? Try stalking a protected convoy in your Type VII in 1943/1944 . Or taking a M1A2 platoon supported by a few AFV's and artillery against a theoretical hostile battalion. Or try tankbusting with ME109's and flak blazing away while remembering to actually fly the plane
The above aside....I am 40...and for me EvE is combat(PvP sounds so silly)....and I adore a quality gank . I only rat a bit to pay the bills when needed.

21, PvPer.
But I've tried the industrialist side of things more than a few times, it always goes pants though because I don't have the patience/I'm too lazy to go all the way with it.
I personally, as a PvPer/pirate, don't have any kind of problem with industrialists. Just carebears. ___

yeah, you're right.
I'm a mission runner of heart, miner & hauler if nessesary - and having some fun in lowsec from time to time - as victim atm, but working to become an opponent
what is the advantage of pvp? well, pve is too predictable for doing that the hole time, trading & sience is nothing i'm intrested in.
and i'm 32 and female, case that is of intrest

Why don't you try going "old skool" for a few weeks, and get some of your mates around for a LAN party weekend. People tend to hack less when someone can apply a well aimed beer can to the back of their (real life) head.
Yes, FPS games are full of hacks. But to be honest they are so bloody obvious (as you said, sniper shot from opposite side of map with a .22 pistol) I just quite the game and then block that player. If I'm playing on the 'net, I'm running the server, end of story. I will often just go into spectator mode, and so will follow the odd "suspicious" player about...I know what to watch for, and any cheating = ban. No, don't bother whining. Ban = ban. Forever. Long after I am dead and gone, my server will still be running, and you will STILL be banned.
That said, I play EVE so much, it's hard to remember the last time I played anything else online . At least in EVE the cheating is more subtle. ---

I know what you mean, nothing like searching for a hole in a convoys defence for hours :D you should try "red orchestra: ostfront 41-45" sometimes, it is by far the most realistic fps i've ever seen. no crosshair, realistic physics, realistic weapons (mgs overheat very fast, you need to change the barrel to prevent this. and you give away your position by the tracer ammo) and it has a very good class system (so not everybody can play the assault trooper with the fancy stg 44, most are just rifleman with a kar 98, 2 get an mg, 1 gets to use a sniper rifle, some get smgs...).
well, anyways, i'm surprised how old are most players (in this thread) are. i played wow a while ago and there i was one of the older players with my 19 years oO
anyways: I'm 19, a newbie (~1 month old) and going for pvp, but i also enjoy all the other aspects. haven't done too much pvp yet, some tackling and some getting pwned by bigger ships, but it was fun. now i need to get a lot of money to upgrade to the next bigger ship class :)

Just turned 18, pvp'er/pirate. Only resort to ratting and mission running when times are bad and the wallet empty... Prefer ratting though, as it's faster and more profitable, imho. All other times - Yarrr
I'm definitely gonna try the industrial side of the game, when I get enough SPs and money to start me. Cant see the point of being a carebear in EVE (my understanding is that a carebear only runs missions/trades/whatever to make ISK and get gd ships with faction fit, simply to stare at them for ages... or boast about them... or run lvl 4s in record amounts of time), but I dont hate them for it.

28. Mostly PvP. For about a year, I did missions, complexes, ratting, and manufacturing. I have since graduated. PvP isn't about being aggressive to show people that I have a bigger e-peen than they do, it is about protecting assets. Speaking of which... my play style will need some serious rework in the near future with belts, complexes, and other such things being completely scanner driven, and dynamic. No longer can you defend specific systems so your corp can reap the rewards of the complex and/or belts within them as the next day they will not re-spawn, they will have moved to another system. Hopefully I can figure out the best way to make money in the new system as fast as I did with rig components (killing player ships and salvaging them was immensely profitable for a while there).
Pirating purely for the sake of pirating is one of the slowest methods for making money in the game. Though money may not be the key to happiness, it definitely pays for some very fun things.
