I'm a former player that has come back because the game is 'free'. I didn't really want to pay as Eve is just one of many games I am interested in (others are single player, one off cost and some MMOs that I bought to play).
So I log into the 'free' Eve and nothing is free. Any skill I need to develop requires a paid sub as I've got the basic ones already. The ships I already own, I can't fly because I need a sub.
So in effect, Eve isn't free to play, it's free to try and when you actually get a few skills, you cannot progress or do anything meaningful until you sub. Why not just extend the trail period for like, a month or two? |

I just think that saying the game is now 'Free to Play' is a bit misleading, as you cannot do the free stuff for long as you out-skill the free bits and need to sub, realistically. |

I think what you are complaining about is a misinterpretation of what CCP have said, but I wouldn't attack you over it and I can't really see any evidence if attacks in anyone else's posts either. Just having a different view isn't an attack.

Well since I came to see the free part of the game I have to admit the first mining ship I looked at to buy required a subscription so I just rolled my eyes and thought about playing Phantasy Star Online for free instead, lol. Pretty sad really, lol. But I have a life these days and don't really play video games. The thing is youre always getting screwed when you play a video game. Paying to waste your time and life is a double slap in the face. and these hardcore losers who have several accounts running at the same time etc have serious problems. i dont have a problem with it having free low level stuff. you can get your fix and leave like I always do and know you can use the same account instead of making another trial account. Even when I paid I didn't really wanna play this crappy game. It's a cool game just crappy. |

But, it is free? You can play as an alpha for free. And alphas can be pretty effective, and this isnt the one ajd only iteration. Just like RuneScape let you do things without a sub. If you want to do more things you need a sub. It's literally the point of these types of things to dangle the carrot.

Take some time to consider what the free content of EVE is: you get access to every player and every place that you get access to with a subscription, and you get access to a limited subset of equipment with which to challenge your fitting and piloting skills.
Annette Durado wrote:Why not just extend the trail period for like, a month or two?
CCP extended the trial by more than a month or two. There's nothing wrong with a never-ending trial account.
Annette Durado wrote:you cannot do the free stuff for long as you out-skill the free bits and need to sub, realistically.
There's no "out-skilling" your network of friends. You can keep working on that as long as you are drawing breath. Friends are more powerful than skill points.

As ccp has workers which may have family or kids to feed and dont get food, living, and so on for free i think its pretty fair that they want Money for this game.
I am wondering how some guys think they can get everything for free.
And I have a live to, and yeah a job where i earn enough money so i dont bugger around with "oh no, its not free stuff". And yes, i dont even pay real money for the Omega clones, because u can earn this easy in the game without beeing there 24/7.
So get your ass up, collect bottles or something if you are not able to earn the subscription fee ingame. |

The reason you are getting the reaction you got is because of your title and original post. You instantly opened with hostility and telling us how CCPs version isnt good enough for you. Get off your self entitlement trip, learn some respect, and how to talk to people and you will get much further in life. Your current attitude will get you nothing. Change the attitude or just assume everyone you interact with is "toxic".
Now im going to be nice and tell you how to play eve for free, since you were to busy ranting because it wasnt "free enough" to actually do anything outside of ranting.
1) Buy and fit a ship you can fly to do your PVE activity of choice.
2) Do PVE activity.
3) Save isk up.
4) Buy a PLEX off the market.
5) Activate said PLEX.
6) You now have 30 days of Omega clone.
7) Use Omega clone to earn more isk in shorter period of time
8) Repeat steps 4 - 7 on a monthly basis.
You have not spent any real money on the game. You now have full access to the game like everyone else. You will not have to spend any money on the game in the future as long as you earn enough for a plex a month. Which a decently skilled omega can do in less than 20 hours a month. You are now, for all intents and purposes, playing for FREE.

Hilary Said so it must be true.
I think the best term to describe eve is freemium.
the idea is simple
here is a free portion of the game play as long as you like.
the longer you play the more likely it is you will convert to a subscription based model or use plex.
if 5% of new players convert to paying that looks good on CCP's bottom line and thats good growth for them.
I'm a HUGE Fan of the new players coming to the game.
Alpha clone brought me back, and 5 days in, boom 3 month sub.
that's what CCP is looking for.

EVE is free to play, with restrictions on what you can use to play it. You can play the whole game, every aspect of it, you just can't use everything. But far be it for me and my 'toxicity' to remind you that giving you anything for free at all is more than you've paid for. I'd call that pretty generous of CCP, but of course, despite paying nothing, you're gonna feel ripped-off anyway. You won't see it this way, of course, but the only thing you are a victim of is your choice to be a victim here.

It is free to play. I completely understand that there are restrictions on Alpha clones as there must be some incentive to changing to Omega. If there wasn't every player would change to alpha after some time. |

Or do I have to still pay for that privilege?

Alphas are basically "WAHH GIBSMEDAT" and will continue to do it until there is no difference between an Alpha and Omega clone.

Read Malcanis's post, looks like you missed it.
Did you think CCP released this expansion without any thought of the consequences? They said they've considered this for years, but now you thought for a minute and decided what's best for the game? Why do you consider only new players are Alphas?

Indeed. For once, CCP have really put some thought into a major change, and they've been really thorough about protecting the existing game from the very many abuses and imbalances that unrestricted F2P would cause. I will freely admit that I was genuinely surpised and pleased when I actually read the initial announcement. When I saw the title I was all "OMFG WHAT HAVE YOU MANIACS DONE THIS IS IT I QUIT FOR- oh, huh, they really thought this one through: actually this is pretty smart and should be really good for the game"

TL;DR: effective at playing the game and participating in the community with all manner of activities.
Yes, you have restrictions. You're not paying for the account but you still get access to every single player in the game. I think that's pretty gosh-darned good value.

Yeah, calling people 'fanboy', the easy way to both avoid and dismiss legitimate criticism of your ideas. Too bad it's completely irrelevant and achieves neither.
Annette, I have plenty of criticisms of the game, to name just a few, the static universe, the ease with which PVP can be avoided in all space, and last but definitely not least, that fact that people can log in for free at all. But please, tell me how much of a fanboy I am, as if that somehow reduces how much of a spoiled brat you are.

The OP is right; EVE have a toxic community - thats why there is one of the golden rules which says:
"Never trust anyone" -
EVE is not free to play - it's even worse than WoW trial account; I advanced to Omega only bcs I had a plex stored in my assets - in other way i would never decide to do such a move;
I already found: - some douchbags; - some bulls$it in game mechanis; - hillarious Plex price; - lowered payout as beying a carebear;
Tbh i have to spend 10 days to earn enough ISKies for a plex with my Omega account - but then i lost like 200 KK assets during the burners and being 1 shooted by minmatar police in, a ship tinny as $hit;

You'll be waiting a while. I have no idea why such a thing would be needed. A full sub is only $15 a month, or 50c a day. There's no price niche to fill. If you can't spare $15 a month for entertainment, you've got bigger problems than what you aren't getting for free.

It's not about if I can afford it or not, it's about if I think it is worth 15Gé¼ a month... or worth the plex grind. EvE is not the only game we can play you know. If you only play EvE every day then sure it is worth it, but I (and no doubt many others) also like to play and buy other games... which makes EVE with 15Gé¼ a month for a few hours of pew pew not worth it to sub... and Alpha clone is useless for old players with a filled hangar of nice ships you can't fly with. So hence a cheapo Beta clone that does not play like a trail account. The question is, does CCP wants to make 7Gé¼ every month from me or do they want to make 15Gé¼ from me 2 months a year? |

1st of all - in europe it's 15euro; Whole europe have to pay in euro even if the currency is 4.2:1 (4.2 of mother currency for 1 euro);
2nd of all - do not take a look into my pocket - i earn and keep what is mine and it's me to decide if I want to pay - for me it's like 3 hours of work to get a gametime - but then.
3rd of all - if ill pay - im forced to play Eve - just not to waste my money which i Paid for it -or grind ISK to buy myself a PLEX -
Where is enjoyment?
Like I said before - Alphas are not free to play - it's a trial accounts which there is low chance u can get an Omega in one month of playing eve as Alpha... 4 mln isk for 1 hour of mining - maybe in two - three months... |

Of cource the game is "free to try/start" and not "free to play", why would anyone pay a buck anymore when it was? Pretty much the same limitation as most other "FTP" games have. And you don't believe adverts litteraly, do you?
But from all FTP games I know EVE is the only one you can grind for a full sub in a moderate amount of time. And once you got your first PLEX ist is quite easy to grind more and stay Omega without paying a dime. Would it be easier to just earn a few bucks and pay the sub? YES! Is there an other FTP game you can stay fully subbed for less than 50 hours grind per month? None I can think of. |

Where does it say that you are supposed to get enough ISK for a PLEX in a month? What guarantee is there that you are able to do it with alpha or even omega? Unless you get really damn lucky, you don't. You need to learn the game first before you start thinking about that.
The good thing aboug alpha is that there is no time-limit. You can play as much or as little as you want, grind for as long as it takes you to get that PLEX, but remember that it will only last a month and then you got to get the next 1,2-1,3 billion for another one.
While you CAN play Eve for free by buying PLEX, it doesn't mean that you are required to do so. Just mindleslly grinding is not what the game is about and will lead you to be burned out of the game.

Well, it's the opposite ! Eve is free since november, and i was happy to pay 20dollars a month ... because mechanics were working fine ! I'm not unhappy because eve is free to play now ! I'm disappointed because ccp advertise a f2p game when it's obviously only a free to test game and pvp mechanics (between others) have been ruined ! I repeat : eve was the best pvp game imo, but when you introduce a mechanic with ships able to warp faster than a server's tic, it just disable all the fun you can have from the danger of a 0.0 area... it's like introducing a saving system in dark soul, it deletes the essence of the game ! Eve was fun because it was risky (lot of camps in low sec, bubbles and scan res boost's in 0.0, lot of pirates in every region, ...) Now, i can, with a 1month old char, jump in each new eden system without even caring... Where is the fun of that ? You wanna pilot a ship ? Dl flight simulator and buy a joystick, you'll get much more fun... (and i'm just talking about 1 mechanic, i won't talk about sov's changing and jump's nerf). Eve just lost all the fun that made me pay every month ! Eve is lost, and ccp is the reason why ! Not a drama, it's just a waste of potential... Sad as ****! |

I'm surprised this hasn't been said yet, which has been said on forums many times before - if a single account subscription fee for EVE is too much of a financial burden for you IRL, maybe it's good that you don't play video games.
I can pay for all my subs with in game earned ISK by buying PLEX easily, but my main Toobo account I always pay with $$$ sub (I do yearly subscription), because it's a bargain when you consider so many other things IRL that can cost you money for fun.
I can understand if you are going through hectic RL schedule then yes, subscription fees can feel expensive, because you are paying but can't actually log on to the game or even get a few hours of play for a month. But CCP's Alpha account is actually very nice option. If you are going through busy RL schedule you can unsub for a month and still get to log on to the game as alpha, so I really can't see how this complain can be justified. :p

We nor CCP care about your special snowflake wallet situation, if you don't like something well enough to pay for it then simply don't play it, problem solved. Also if your idea of making money is mining for 4 mil/h then honestly you're playing eve wrong.
Sounds like you're lazy and want others to solve your problems for you.

I guess the complaining isn't so much about the fact that eve is free or not... it's more about the "free to play" advertising which is a lie... every player can pay a plex with a month old char and a lot of game time (decreasing while skills get learnt) but i guess this "free to play" label isn't justified because... well, this version of eve is not the definition of a free to play game... as simply as that ;) |

It's not that simple at all. You actually have access to a full game for free. All the gameplay that is available in EVE is available for free. The fact you can't do things as effectively as people who pay is meaningless. The fact you can do them at all, for free, is what matters. You are getting a whole lot of game for a whole lot of nothing. That is the very definition of free to play. Just because you expect everyone to do it the same way as your favourite free to play game doesn't mean they're not free if they don't do it that way.

Let me reiterate something here, just in case you're ignoring it on purpose.
If you are struggling to find 50c a day for your entertainment, then you have bigger problems than how much gaming costs.
Again, there won't be a 'beta' clone because there's no price niche to fill. There's free, and you get a whole lot more for free than people seem to think, and then there's $15 a month (including whatever that converts to in whatever currency you use in whatever country you're from - seriously, you make that point as if it matters, but it really doesn't). If you don't like it, don't pay it. You have that option, and a whole lot of game to play with the 'I don't want to pay' option.
As for the point made by someone earlier: "they can have $7 a month, or $15 for two months each once a year". Or, they can tell you to grow the **** up and get over yourself. Cuz you know, we all have options.

That's one model of free to play, yes. It's not the only model. The DEFINITION of free to play means one can play a game for free. There are a variety of models, however, and EVE's is a new one that is unique to EVE due to EVE's unique single-sharded player-driven nature. The devs have been working on this for years (according to their devblog) trying to figure out the best way of implementing it without breaking the game. I think they found a nice balance.
SWTOR is another F2P game that doesn't work by the model you suggested. You can't go higher than level 50, you can't do PVP, flashpoints, Ops, or a whole bunch of other stuff, unless you pay. SWTOR's model works for it, EVE's model works for EVE. If you're new to EVE, you won't understand right away why this was probably the best way to do it, but the only reason EVE didn't lose more people that had been here for many many years when it went F2P was because some of use wanted to see for ourselves if CCP could pull it off.
I, personally, had a feeling that we'd see our share of entitled brats within the first few weeks. I suspect many others did too. I'm disappointed that I wasn't left disappointed, if you catch my meaning, but nothing that's been posted by said brats on this thread has not already been predicted, including the all-encompassing, "but this isn't really F2P because this other game does it this way". EVE isn't any other game, it is EVE. There is quite literally nothing else like EVE out there. You are experiencing something incredibly unique, for free, and taking it for granted while stomping your feet and demanding more without having to cough up in return. You know the developers have families to feed, right?

there is only one definition of a F2P label my friend. A free alpha doesn't mean a free game ! Get along with it ! I'm a new player with a main from 2003 and and alts from 2007 and 2011... If i were new to the game, i wouldn't even care... I don't know why you try to justifie the fact that eve is F2P when it isn't... And as you can see, eve ascencion was announced like a F2P but is no longer called F2P when you check the official website (it's called "play for free", not F2P)... Because the game content access doesn't respect the chart of a F2P label...
Now, i'll go f**** ... But not myself, i'd like you to bend over ;)

Well... i think disccusion is about that CCP announce the Eve is going to be "Free to play" - which is wrong state; It is not free;
It's unlimited trial - that they should call it;

Whether you call it an unlimited trial or free to play, it doesn't matter. Both are correct and neither are mutually exclusive. You're arguing semantics for the sake of "calling out" CCP. It's absolutely ridiculous. If you really feel the need to be outraged about something, go get outraged about something that matters, like weed not being legal in Australia yet.

When did i complained about the price? i paid eve from my own pocket during all these years, i gave them thousands of dollars, why would i complain about some of the content being free? do you even read my post before answering? I complained about the "false advertising" arround eve, and, if you read my other posts, about the decreasing quality of the gameplay evolution... You should disguss yourself more than i do... Like, getting RL skills that pay the RL bills. Or something.

This actually true. Sure alpha accounts cannot fly certain things, like T2/T3 fits/ahipa for example, but there are T1 counterparts that function. In terms of 'content' you are not really restricted. You can still be in fleet fights, you are not barred from scanning and entering WH, null gates do not stop you from jumping in, NPC stations let you dock wherever you are, etc. While ships and fit choices may be limited, the space itself is totally unlimited, for free!

It's still a cold and dark place, so desillusion is kinda fitting, no?
F2p is marketing. Nobody should ever buy marketing. It's also a matter of perception, and that always guarantees perception problems.
CCP made available a quite wide and deep means of discovering the nature and features of EVE, and while that is indeed free to acces and play, we should remember that it remains a subscription game (for a stupid amount of good reasons, not just considering CCP's learning curves, but just because of the foundation principles that make the very thing work in the first place).
As a returning player Alpha status is a very reasonable way to get back in with things. There's a bit of a wall though, which you already ran into: as a returning player you arrive with expectations based on experiences. Finding limitations - which to someone already acquintend with the game can come very quickly, and be very harsh - is never fun. There's room for CCP to improve in this regard. Personally I think they might reconsider the old recall program, but with a modified Alpha character / account - soft landings always beat the ones were people go splat. So to speak.
Keep in mind, a lot of things have changed. It may very well be an idea to leave the old established character for a bit, and rediscover life as an Alpha. It comes down to finding the fun again.
Picture the "free" as something between an open ended trial, an open road of discovery, and an ongoing process of exposure to seduction around every corner. It's the best version of a choice between the lesser of evils.
And EVE, did - and does - need new blood. It wasn't just features and mechanisms that got stale, it was a declining population.
Sure, an Alpha has limits. But it's got quite surprising capabilities, and sure, I wish they had some half-plex thing to make an account Omega for a week or weekend in tune with real life's routines, but things are as they are. If you expected a full game where nothing costs, it would be an EVE were you'd have to pay to win.
I think it's fair to say that would kill things off quite effectively. |

First post, new alpha clone player.
Firstly I'm very grateful to be able to try this game out as "f2p"
I would like to point out a couple things though.
Blizzard at one time, still to a degree, had one of the largest profit margins in the history of American commerce. Based on the subscription model. It was a license to print money.
Secondly, there is plenty of true f2p games that has zero problems paying the bills, in fact many games that have gone the f2p route did so because of the desire to make MORE money, not to avoid bankruptcy. This is surely the case here as well.
Lastly, there are plenty of people who aren't comfortable paying for a game over and over and over to the tune of hundreds of dollars a year, regardless if they can afford it or not.
However, I am also perfectly happy with the model and have no complaints. Have fun out there, I know I am. |

CCP aren't Blizzard, and have a completely different game on their hands. It's as much about paying the bills as it is about not breaking the game at its very core by implementing a free to play model that doesn't suit it. This is as much a true free to play game as any freemium game out there, it's just a different model than you're used to. There's a good reason for that - it's a different game than you're used to, as well. People who aren't comfortable paying for a game like this with the subscription model available don't have to anymore though. That's the point. They can put their main aside and occasionally sub him up or PLEX him in-game, but even if it's not subbed, they can make a new alpha and still enjoy it on a more casual basis.

I guess it all comes down to what your definition of Free 2 play is.
Can you log in the game and play without having to spend any money, yes you can.
Can you log in and access everything in game without having to spend money, no you cant.
Most Free 2 Play games follow this model. That's how they make their money.
So technically Eve Free 2 Play, its just some of its content is pay walled, pretty much like most other free 2 play games.

I don't know if you're new to the game or if you got an old char, but imo, excluding t2/3 ships from the "relevant" content of a pretended F2P eve online is a big mistake... Going into a fleet isn't a content, it's a mechanic ! As much as visiting WH or 0.0 ! And F2P or not, all mechanics being accessible to all the players must be a sure thing ! Especially for a single server game ! Once again, F2P is a label that must make ALL THE CONTENT (and not the mechanics) available for free (except workshop ofc, but that's the way devs can win money in F2P !), alpha or not ! It's not like t2/3 ships ar in an alpha test, these ships exist for a while now ! Making a part of the content free (but the rest like it used to be) is (once and once again) not the definition of an F2P label ! workshop contains some accessories for your char ... etc but certainly not t2/3 ships... those are part of the game as much as the t2 modules you gonna fit ! And once again i'm not criticising this in the way that it's too expensive, but by the fact that F2P anouncement was a false advertising (like the topic tittle suggests) ! end of the story !

No, there is no rule anywhere that states that free to play means all content has to be available for free. And no, making t2s and t3s available for free? Are you mad? Again, your own ignorance of how much content is available for free is your own problem, your own entitlement at work. This game is available to play for free, that makes it free to play. If you can log in, undock, and shoot rats for free, and make in-game isk for that, you are playing for free. I suggest you finish high-school before engaging inany further arguments, please, and learn some critical thinking skills. And some grammar.
I'm not new. Excluding t2/3 from alphas is necessary. You don't have to like it, and you can kick and scream about it all you want, but if you think CCP are going to give everything away just because you stomp your feet and froth at your mouth over semantics, you're mistaken.

Did i say i wanted all this for free? Again, read carefully before posting, you guy just make fool of yourself ! Eve advertised F2P in november and every single one of eve player was expecting that... every single one of 'em has been disappointed, even if i'm happy that some of the content is available for free ! Once again, i don't say they were unhappy that some of the content is finally available for free, but that this is not what was expecting when ccp announced F2P ! If you can't get that, you're lost ! And criticising grammar while i'm doing the effort of writing in a language which isn't my maternal language is soooooooooooooooooooooooooooo clever ! You're a good kid (/troll) ! I'll try to learn some grammar... try to learn the respect ! Just joking ! ......... |

You don't have to say it. Your manufactured outrage over semantics is enough to reveal it.

Numbers dwindling so it would be better to be more adult when responding to people who make a fair observation even if you don't agree with it. In that case, may I partake of your possessions and skill points, if the community is too toxic for you to continue here?

I'm sorrry but I don't think I understand your point anymore. First you quoted me and talked about T2/T3 not being available as though that was a 'problem' or some kind of a 'proof' that not all content is available for free, but then later you reply to Remiel that you never said T2/T3 should be 'free'?
I can vaguely understand you (even if I may not agree) if you say 'everything should be free or it's not F2P as advertised', but at the same time you are saying T2/T3 should not be 'free'?
Who decides what needs to be 'free' to qualify a game to be F2P? And no access to T2/T3 does not restrict 'content' for you as much as you seem to think. I'm not a new player, can fly all T2/T3 in game, etc, etc. But you can make perfectly valid contribution to a fleet PVP in T1 ships fit with meta modules. Heck, you can have a whole fleet of destroyers fit with meta modules and they will not be a negligible force in ANY space. You can, on your free account, use T1/meta modules, group up with other people playing for free, and annihilate an Omega subscriber's multi billion ISK ship for which he skilled up & have the right to fly/use modules for by virtue of having a paid sub.
You can play and fly for free, with limits, but you are also free to interact with other players and group up and fight players who are paying for subs, and the win or loss will not be determined by whether someone is Alpha or Omega, but the outcome will depend on who set up a better op? Isn't that great? I have many paid accounts (some RL money paid subs and some paid with PLEX), but if I mess up I can easily be killed by group of alpha toons - isn't that great? :P
