It's been buzzed all over the internet and on this forum that a linux client would be released in 3 weeks...4 weeks ago.
Anybody have new news on the status of the linux client?

Personally I don't mind if it's just delayed, but still coming.
However, it would be nice to hear something about a new estimate of availability...

I would ditch Windoze in a heartbeat if I had a top shelf MMO that had a naitive Linux client. Might be a double post due to some forum login wierdness, if so - sorry =)

Cherubina, that is what I thought until I accidentally killed off XP on my machine and figured that was a good omen to dive into Linux. There is a very good thread here in Tech Lab about running Eve under wine in Linux, you can always try that. I recommend Ubuntu for starters, it's a very newb friendly distribution.
If you're worried about partitioning/screwing up your hard disk, give Wubi a try. It creates a virtual partition for Ubuntu to run inside - essentially one huge file on your Windows hard disk. Through some pretty nice wizardry you can select which one you want to boot into when your PC starts, without changing anything on the hard disk.
There is really no risk, and if you have a free afternoon to try this out, you'll be hopefully surprised that it is a lot less painful than you'd have thought. Make sure you grab the proper video drivers - the ones provided by default have lousy 3D support.
One final word - Teamspeak has a native Linux client that runs fine, but I've been having a hard time to get Ventrilo to behave decently. Seems to depend on your hardware and the phase of the moon.
I've left Windows behind and haven't looked back since.

Another posting had this link in it: World of Darkness Online could be here in 4 or 5 years.
It has a comment on Linux client too: "- An EVE Online Mac/Linux native client will be released in August later this year. Penguins in SPAAAAAAACE!"

Actually I find the native client quite possible, remember the first postings on this subject.
"The Linux client is mainly being targeted at Eastern Europe where they may be running on older hardware with Linux while the Mac Client has been a joint project with Transgaming."
Okay, is someone going to tell me with full sincerity that a wine/cedega solution fits the older hardware profile? I don't think so. The wine/cedega solution works nicely currently on my dual core amd64 (2GHz/core), 2GB ram (1G/core), 7900GTX with nvidia latest drivers OpenGL XOrg, etc. Does that sound like running on older hardware? Okay, there are newer hardware, but I personally don't find it reasonable to dump thousands of Euros to keep my machine on newest and greatest hardware.
And if the Mac OS X version will also be native, really cool for them too.
Naturally, I will believe this only when I will be playing the game, but I sure hope this is the truth of things to come.

I'm quite impatient for the native linux client to be released :) Just found that my ut2k4 on debian lenny runs much more smoother (especially on spots with fountains, like one with heavy armor DM-DE-Osiris2) and average fps is higher. EVE thru wine has higher fps than under windows too, but not that much. Hope native client won't have any bugs eve-under-wine has :P

Comparing wine and cedega performance i'd choose wine installation if 'native' client would be built against cedega-libs :>

Chances are, but I sure hope they do the right thing and forget about wine/cedega and do a real client as they have been talking about a native client in some interviews which wine/cedega isn't by definition...

I used EVE under Cedega in Ubuntu for quite some but eventually I had to leave it for the time being. Nothing to do with performance or anything, it worked quite well. The problem for me is that my alliance uses ventrilo which does not have a native Linux client. I can get it working fine under Wine but once its windows loses focus I can no longer use the push to talk key. Off topic I know but its really the only thing keeping me from playing EVE under Linux.

Uh.......all I can say to this is....if you hold your breath, you are probably gonna' turn blue, fall down, and then die. They've had a "linux client being developed" statement on vent's site for over two years.......and still the wind blows, the dust gathers, and the linux section of their forums remain empty.

You can get vent working under linux. There are directions all over the web. Works pretty well too!! To Game Or Not To Game? Is that even a question. |

My alliance uses ventrilo. My solution to avoid tons of hoops:
Run vent on a laptop sitting beside the main box. No focus issues and it does work fairly well. Much MUCH better on wine .9.40 than previous versions.
There are hacks for the focus issue if you are stuck with just a single machine, but I've heard nothing very good about stability running vent AND EVE at the same time on the same box.

Now would start being a nice time to start hearing something like an official announcement about this "promised" client for Mac&Linux from CCP and not just as short comments in a podcast and in interviews on external sites.

Guys, this has already been asked and answered by a CCP Dev.
I would link directly to the post, but I can't find it right now. Basically, there WILL NOT be a native Linux client. Period. Basically, the EVE Developers are working with the Cedega people to make sure that EVE is supported by Cedega as much as possible.
Unfortunately, this also means that we will likely have to PAY EXTRA to use the "linux client". I strongly suspect that we will have to have an EVE subscription AND a Cedega subscription in order to run the "linux client".
Nice job CCP. Way to ensure that nobody will EVER want to play EVE on Linux.
