The supposed sale rumor is based of a poorly researched article. I suggest reading this player blog as he gives a pretty good background on why this story came out. http://nosygamer.blogspot.com/2016/12/the-newest-rumor-of-sale-of-ccp-games.html

I think the talk that Eve is dying or the game is stagnant is a bit overrated. And Eve being for sale - a bit out of context too. They were seeking investors, which I guess means they are offering shares or part of the company in exchange for a huge check. CCP did this essentially to fund the development for Eve Valkyrie.
I think the kind of people that think Eve is dead are the kind that are bored for hours on end waiting for some sort of action to be spoon fed to them by their FC/CEO.
If Eve was dying, they wouldn't have just bought a new server or still be developing new patches and releases for it.

If I ever was to be rich enough to "win EVE" that way, I would hype a major expansion and blow everyone's pixels the day before the planned release right at down time, then add a massive useless patch than does not change the game at all but cause massive bandwidth requirement to gain access back to the server with an updated client, claim a major bug happened and wait for day 2 of the expansion to call myself out and just shut it all down.
I guess I'm kind of an a-hole for just thinking it all. |

The only way a new owner would shut down eve, is if hey wanted the ip.
If say a large company was to buy ccp, there are usually a few reasons:
1) they can make profit with the current players and will just milk what they can untill they sell for profit.
2) they want technology that ccp has, so they can use it to make a new 'better game" (alas west wood being bought out by EA, it was for the avatar tech to be use din thesims MMO plus #3)
3) the company has an ip the large guys want. (in west woods case, that was CnC.)
Otherwise, they typically just buy shares to own a company, collect there dividends then sell for profit, and the company chugs along with no issues, and no one caring,
So no, i don;t think eve is shutting down anytime soon. they just upgraded the server this past year, so we have at min about 4 years left to get there return on investment before they shut down. so basicly relax, and play the game

I figure roughly 5 years of incrementally decreasing development/support (mostly towards F2P/P2Play/cosmetic and pet nonsense), next 5 years in terrible decline as a zombie.
CCP has not future proofed its product very well. Attempts to do so all have resulted in disjointed disasters. They tried to integrate and develop EVE by peripheral products. All have failed.
This game also hasnt caught the attention/enthusiasm of the new generation of gamers. Not because its hardcore (there is a huge market looking for exactly that right now), but because they dont like the idea of dealing with 10yr vets that dominate/steamroll the ingame environment. They already feel overwhelmed in their own life by babyboomers etc.
Aside from the "give me a reward for existing" millenials, those who might be otherwise interested in EVE, are more interested at a chance a new start in a fresh hardcore MMO, so they too can be 10yr vets down the line lording it over others.
They want a level playing field to start from.

I been seeing these "EVE is dying" threads for a long time now but I think it may be for real this time. EVE has lost a lot of players due to changes over the last year and while they have gained some, most of the gains will be short lived. Free to play brings in a different type of gamer, not the subscription type players that have keep things going for 10 years. In the end, I doubt they will pick up very many subscriptions. The player base is slowly getting smaller and smaller and new threads pop up on a daily basis with complaints of greefing and forced PVP. Not saying I agree with them...EVE is EVE....just saying that the player base has become like a snake eating it's own tail. Everyone who likes the darker side of EVE is already playing or has played. All the new players coming in for free who are used to games basically handing them everything they need with no chance of losing it, well, I just can't see them subscribing for any long period of time. Just my 2 cents! I hope I'm wrong. |

I admire you. You are friendly and make good points.
Im new but I have always wanted to play this game. Tried a few times but it is truly overwhelming.
CCP and their playerbase are unique: CCP wanted so badly to make an awesome game and please their playerbase. That is good. But if you werent along for the ride from early on you will always feel like an outsider.
As old players drop out (thats how life works) the new players are simply overwhelmed and confused, feeling truly stupid and noobish. You dont want to pay money for that feeling, especially if its gonna take months to get "into" the game.
And being an Alpha means that you never will get "into" the game. Too many restrictions.

Naah, WoT has been dying for its whole life
CCP has to make some tough decisions.
Downsize and maybe replace some of their crew. Take a fresh "noob" look at the game and its mechanics.
Hell, maybe even start from scratch, EVE 2.0!
EVE: Return of the elder.
EVE: New dawn.
EVE: Offworld.

As far as I know, there is no EVE 2.0 in the works. And inorder for that to culminate in time, it should have been started years ago, when money was good, competition low, so as to be realized in the near future (~5yrs).
Enjoy it while it lasts. We got a few more good years.

The amount of positive change in the game during the last couple of years is staggering.
One of the finest examples is the warp speed change. When I joined EVE this somehow feeled lacking, that all ships were warping at the same speed. Reactions on forums were, that it's never going to change. You learn to deal with it and then, plop, one fine day it's there .
CCP has done a tremendous job in the last years rebelancing ships so far. Not everything is fine. It takes time to put new ships in the right place. But the most important is, that they really stick to it continously.
The game as a product feels alive compared to 6 years ago. Obviously there is work to do. But what product of this size is ever finished?

I bailed three years ago because I had been hit with the nerf bat so many times I was going blind with rage. I'm back now, but it isn't the same. It isn't bad, but is isn't the same either. I have a 50/50 opinion on the death of EVE thing. I am going month to month. In my personal opinion, if it a money thing, make a mid-level clone that allows for players to use all they have trained, but they cannot train anymore. Maybe 67% of the Omega cost?
I'm playing an Alpha toon to see what the free players can experience. I know what is out there, but I want to see what they can do too.

Do you guys think it's possible that if this game shut down someone could make a private server? I ask b/c games with much higher population counts have private servers. The big WoW private server had a ton of people playing on it.
I do know that on EvE everyone is on the same server so that would make things a lot harder I'm sure. |

No chance.
If EVE goes completely **** up, CCP may throw a Hail Mary to the community by offering them the code to run and develop private servers so as to perpetuate their legacy.
But I wouldnt bet on it.
And EVE wouldnt be the same without a one server environment. And I dunno whether one person can even facilitate EVE as a server with what people typically have at home for even a fraction of current population, unless you are playing on it alone. Probably not.

The article from Bloomberg was ambiguous at best. Speculation mostly. I see enough in game personally that makes me think it's got a few more years left. I am, by no means, an expert on MMOs or their longevity.
The 5 year prediction seems a bit short, but then again it could be spot on.
Returning to the game and resubbing so that I can fly all my Shiney ships is worthwhile for me. Even for the short duration. Not many other MMOS offer what EvE offers, if at all. They've made significant improvements to the game.with regard to new players joining the game. It definitely caters to the millenials. It will only get them so far however, because the curve is still steep when it comes to flying in nullsec.
I mean yea, it's fresh meat for the vets who are looking for new targets to pop or bait and pop in highsec, sure. Most of these newer players don't understand how to navigate defensively in the sand box. They'll either rage quit and another new player will take their place or adapt, learn to git gud and move on to nullsec for even more fun to be had.
I posted this question, because I personally love this game. I'm not entirely sure why I stopped playing 3 years ago. Real life demands took precedent. School, again, will be a thing, but I'm not going to let it stop me from enjoying what remains of the lifespan of this game.
I'll see you all in space my fellow pilots, either to pop my own shiney ships in an endeavor to pop yours or just pop yours. Regardless I'm looking forward to seeing lots more explosions to come! |

I read basically this exact post in 2008. Again in 2010, 2011, 2014 and... Well, you get the point.
PS given that eve has had no compromise on all-zones non-consensual PvP for 14 years now, I think it might be time for you to accept that there won't be much shift on that point in the next 14.

What would you suggest for an EVE 2.0? Such a thing would stop the development of Eve cold. Eve 2016 even has changed a lot from the November/2015 game I started. Eve is moving an changing which will keep it up for another 15 years, simply because there si nothing to compare it to. Every CEO of a development studio that would suggest a game with such harsh consequences as Eve would tarred and feathered and chased away. Even in Dark Souls you get your souls back after death. Eve has a secure niche which will hamper it's growth but on the other side will guarantee it's survival.

Yes, EVE is close to be shut down! After all, it is know that thirteen year old MMOs all shut down a year after, specially if they are making a profit and the developers behind it are laser focused on working the game themselves love while keeping their livelihood going so they can support their homes and families.
Real talk? Instead of being busy thinking about whether the game will exist one year from now, what about you have fun with it now instead of mincing details? Isn't a good short life one worth living? |

Yes, older players drop out of the game, and new people join.
The thing is, you don't _stay_ new. So it's not like there's a massive loss of institutional knowledge when an older player leaves. Because what they know has been picked up by players who are in the middle of their life as an eve player.

Yes, EVE is 100% sure going to die soon, it is known. Luckily I already have the code and permission to run a new and free for all server. I am offering special deals until the old servers shut down: Give me ISK and I will give it back ten times on the new server. You can get personal housing, skins and ships too, just send me ISK and let me know what you want at TheEndIsNear(at)EVE.com
I also offer insurances for ships and structures you will leave behind on DoomsDay. Make sure your beloved ones have everything they need after you have ascended to the new servers. If you want the to claim the names of your current pilots, heroes or enemies on the new servers this will be only 10 Million ISK per name. Halos are at 20 Mil.
EDIT: I have to withdraw this great offer because of the forum EULA but you will all know where to find me, no worries. |

1) Its money/time/effort that didnt go into EVE. 2) These spinoffs do not contribute to EVE. 3) Since there is no integration of these spinoffs into EVE, your last sentence is hypothetical.

As someone who has worked (now retired) in the video game industry specifically in MMOG's, I would speculate that CCP is still making good profit from EVE Online. As I have zero insight into their business (operating costs, investments, loans, etc), that's just my industry experience guess.
I only say that because CCP is running a one-universe type game here that actually shows their numbers. While it's surely lower from back in the day when I used to play, it's still solid numbers for a niche MMOG that many didn't think would succeed. There are other online games that were subscription based that went F2P with speculated much lower player numbers who are still around today. There are also those with much lower that have sold off to other companies or completely shut down.
Being they have had some cuts and whatnot--which always happens in this industry to keep the game profitable--I have no doubt they would ever be in a position to not sustain EVE, at least not anytime soon. If they are looking to sale, it's likely not because of player numbers. It's likely do to something else. Afterall, CCP Games is still a business and likely still aiming for being a for profit business regardless of any emotional or other attachment we have.
Just my 2 cents anyways. |

Its my opinion and hope that EVE will not die soon because I think that there's so much new technology coming out sooner or later there will be strong enough server to overcome tidi and have a real time pleasant capital fight with 10k+ people in eve with no lag at all.Because eve player base is not so large this moment is not so far away in time, and once tech catches up the game will be given new life because finally eve videos will resemble what's going on in game. |

Eve has been around a long time and I have seen a significant change in the player numbers since around 2012 - and the f2p aspect appears to be providing a bit of an injection over the last month or so of new players - if half of them stay around then eve will have picked up some reasonable numbers - and with the way alpha accounts are restricted many of those will either buy plex or a subscription- there is little incentive to stay free once a player has learned the basics of eve- but it means players can learn the game without putting a 3 or 6 month subscription down- this way new players can make an informed decision to pay for the game or not. This could work for ccp and I hope it does. Still lots to work on - but all the graphics improvements in the last two years have sharpened up the game nicely. I think eve has a big future ahead at this point. |

I read basically this exact post in 2008. Again in 2010, 2011, 2014 and... Well, you get the point. As I said... EVE is EVE. I didn't say I agreed. I know it wont change nor do I want it to. I do believe it will be the downfall of this game though.

Those don't pull in constant revenue, plus they are VR games, which isn't exactly a large market. That said, at least they weren't flops like everything else, so hopefully thats a good sign of things to come. Just a shame they are turning the concept of DUST into a a copy/paste boring fps for PC that will be forgotten in a month or two. Also they screwed up as late as 2013-2014 if I recall. So your 2008 reference is itself out of date.
And the positive side, those little VR games lead to CCP making carriers in eve be fun to play in order to try and match the two games together. |

The problem is there i really no place in EVE for casual players. The top 10% who enjoy harassing other players chase away the casual (paying) players.
Rather then spending time tinkering with the interface for the thousandth time, they need to add some layer to the game which players can use to defend them selves from griefers.

IMHO
Tanking, warp core stabilizers (multiples of them), local chat contact list, the standing and security status system, D-scan, bookmarks system (use this for instant-undock and 0km dock bookmarks, perches, scouting bookmarks, etc) your own common sense and interpersonal skills. You are not lacking in ways to protect yourself from griefers. The problem is you didn't bother trying to find out how to avoid getting griefed and then blame it on the game lacking things like regulation against griefers.
Get educated and be vigilant. If you get griefed in here it's most likely because you didn't do either or both of the aforementioned.

Offgrid instant-undock bookmarks. Drop that with a fast MWD frigate during peaceful times and use it every time you undock.
0m instant-dock bookmarks. Warp to this and as soon as the station shows up on grid you select station and spam the dock button.
D-scan and local will warn you of impending blob. Especially when the local number spikes up. Use short D-scan 1AU - 5AU and you will be warned of incoming blob (make sure to spam it. Hotkey that D-scan scan button). Use the time to align and get out.
If you are crazy/awesome/crazy-awesome enough to fight a 20-30 man gang fly a fast long range vessel of preferably cruisers (or smaller/larger if you are good enough) and learn to split the enemy gang on-grid. Do not allow anyone of them to get outside of 150km of each other, target the ones closest to you (usually tacklers) and keep transversal down by going straight line.
You HAVE TOOLS to deal with 20-30 man blob. The problem is you didn't know and you didn't bother to find out about these tools.

I can't believe we still get these "is Eve dying" posts after a game that has been online for over a decade. It is one of the longest running MMO in the history of MMOs. Despite ups and downs in concurrent players, it has a deeply loyal fanbase of very active players, plus a fairly large number of addicts who break and return, break and return, break and return to the game over many years.
If its not clear by now that CCP isn't trying to be WOW, i.e. packaging a spoonfed product that attempts to be appealing to the absolute largest number of people, but instead has accepted its niche market appeal and doubled down on that - then I don't know what would make that more clear to someone.
EVE is the only MMO I'll play anymore. I'm tired of the MMO formula in general. EVE with its complexity, true freedom and brutality is the only MMO that even interests someone like me these days. I used to play virtually every MMO released. EVE is the one that's endured long after I stopped caring about all the others.
Eve will end someday. But soon? I seriously doubt it.

Unfortunately since the ancient split between Trammel and Felucca, as essentially PvE and PvP shards makes comparison difficult to EVE.
For all intents and purposes, it has however seen an increase in PvE, at the expense of PvP over the years.

I always enjoy reading the wry replies from the player base. When I logged in yesterday , before work, there was a considerable number of people online.
In the corp recruiting channel there were 600+ people advertising for various corps. Seems to me that the player base is still robust enough that there's plenty of mileage still left to go in game.
One of the posters above asked why not just enjoy it while it lasts? I'm doing just that when I get off work this morning. Played some lastnight before work, scouting out potential spots that campers typically hang out to get some solo pvp action in. I didnt get far enough into null to really find anything.
