https://www.ccpgames.com/news/2017/eve-online-gamers-to-join-in-exoplanet-search-through-scientific-collaboration/

22 February 2017 GÇô Reykjavik, Iceland - CCP Games today announced that the search for planets outside our solar system (AKA exoplanets) will come to their massively multiplayer online game EVE Online. This unique scientific crowdsourcing effort represents a collaboration between CCP developers, Massively Multiplayer Online Science (MMOS), University of Reykjavik, and the University of Geneva and its honorary professor Michel Mayor, winner of the prestigious 2017 Wolf Prize for Physics and discoverer of the first exoplanet.

Within EVEGÇÖs virtual universe, players will interact with real-world astronomical data provided by the University of Geneva through a fully integrated part of the EVE Online game experience called Project Discovery. Once enough players reach comparative consensus on classification of the data, it will be sent back to the University of Geneva for use in refining the search for exoplanets.

GÇ£We were thrilled to see the successes of our first foray into citizen science, in which EVE players have been voracious contributors to the database of the Human Protein Atlas,GÇ¥ said Andie Nordgren, EVEGÇÖs Executive Producer. GÇ£In searching for the next dataset for our massive player community to tackle, the stars aligned for players to have the opportunity to directly contribute to the search for new planets with a world-renowned scientific team. Real people around the world collaborating in a virtual universe to explore the real universe is the stuff science fiction, and soon science fact, is made of.GÇ¥

The previous iteration of Project Discovery yielded incredible results in a short amount of time, with players submitting over 25 million classifications of human cells back to the Human Protein Atlas. It proved EVEGÇÖs legendary communityGÇÖs massive support for real science efforts as players formed one of the largest collectives of citizen science contributors in the world.

The search for exoplanets will come to EVE in 2017, with a full presentation by Michel Mayor scheduled for April 6-8 at EVE Fanfest 2017 in Reykjavik, Iceland.

This is awesome!! And crowdsourcing information of this magnitude is something I have wished for for years ever since I used to run the SETI program on my computers when they werent in use years ago. And I am glad that CCP rewards us with some things worth isk to the masses for it and highly encourage CCP to talk to more companies, like SpaceX, and other spacial entrepreneurs to help crunch numbers and values for the future. It would be an excellent way to move humanity forward into the stars.

I always love the candy news that CCP post and not the news under the hood. You say that project discovery was a huge success. What i would like to know is:

1 - how much money did CCP make from this.
2 - How many human hours were involved in the success
3 - How much real cash it costs for the above point in real life or would have taken.
4 - Most importantly were the players compensated back properly or is this the new world order of work more for less pay.

Okay, bit of a tangent here.

PLEX is currently worth 19.95 USD, and is selling for 1,030,000,000 ISK minimum at this time.
Therefore, 1 ISK = 1.9368932e-8 USD, or 1.9368932e-6 cents.

That's 0.0000019 cents/ISK

If you earn 1,000,000 ISK per hour, you are earning 1.9 cents/hour, or $0.02 USD.

If you earn 1,000,000 ISK/hour, then a PLEX at today's market will cost you 1030 hours.

If you worked for $0.02 USD/hour, you would have earned $10.30.

The USA minimum wage is $7.25/hour.

If you had worked at $7.25/hour, you would have earned $7467.50USD.

$7475.50USD will purchase 373 PLEX.

Those PLEX will lower the market value of PLEX if sold at once,
however they would be worth over 373,000,000,000 ISK.

At that rate, it would take you over 100 billion years to start to go back in time.
That is, if it doesn't take you 100 times longer than the existence of the Universe going off on a tangent in relation to the Wait Equation.

I was thinking this same thing. Add to that the fact that participation nets you an ISK reward and you get a voluntary activity that compensates you for your time and may help advance real world research... If people have an issue with this being an in game feature then I just don't understand.

And to those who cry "But how much money did CCP make on this endeavor?" I would answer, hopefully lots. They are a business after all. If they can provide a service to the scientific community and add some content to their game all while making a little money on the side, then good for them.

My hat is off to you CCP. Well done.

Everyone knows that eve has ship spinning down time in the game, waiting for fleet, getting camped in station etc...
This is genius it gives players something to do that can have real impact in the real world. And I may be mistaken but it sounds like they are linking this with the discovery of new systems my guess the addon of the jove systems. Which means it also has an affect the on the game universe too.

Things like this are some of the biggest reasons I always come back to play eve!

You got a little isk but the main point is its a volunteer thing to do in your free time. I would love to see a little more isk or vanity items for it but due to it being volunteer and in a game that has lots of down time it gives content for the down time and for people like me who are very interested in the progress of space exploration and understanding I will have a chance to help affect real life space discovery.

It's more like using the network of available computers to process the data a faster rate than the astronomers are able to.

If you think about it Eve Online covers pretty much all of the time zones and has around 20,000 members on at any time. The University of Geneva hardly has 20,000 members who are able to compile and process the large amount of data that the mainframe of Eve Online is able to compile and process.

People want to be part of something that is meaningful if not prophetic.

Being part of Exo Planet Hunting will be meaningful as well as prophetic as no other environment other than Eve Online has immersed its Capsuleer's in the reality of space exploration.

Some in-game rewards though are in order such as:

Exo Planet Hunting skins
Exo Planet Hunting ships and modules

Out of game rewards:

I have been part of few exo planet hunting programs that are really fun and interesting.

I think I even found a black hole as there was an area of space about the size of a half dollar coin with light all around it. A normal sun would appear in the same manner but with the circle of the sun appearing in the center of it.

Is that from fanfest? Are there pics of exo attire/skins?

No, it was posted before fanfest and its just an idea.

I think some rewards will be there to grab. Maybe something exploration or planetary interaction themed (actually they showed on this fanfest's "Art of EVE" the exploration suit that will probably be a reward). Maybe science outfits or something like that, there are still white lab coats unreleased.

Maybe something along the lines of new suits that enhance attributes, hardwiring and the actual attributes of the ship using nano polymorhphing technology that allows the Capsuleer to make minor physical changes to her or his ship systems.

It fits game theme.

I wish we could name the discovery too, so 5000 years into the future people can live on Lolicon 2 and have a statue of me in their capital.

WOW... that's a great move. I love how CCP struggles to integrate real life science into eve gameplay. Would it matter if you discover something while being paid to do so (meaning you must have the skills to do it) or if you have fun playing a game and discover something great in real life. Humanity must come together if progress is to be made! Currency is important too, but what matters most is the evolution of the human race!

Good job!

As someone with many hours, well over level 1000 and a 99.9% accuracy in stage 1 after playing this for half an hour and failing every time all I can say and advise is that CCP rethinks what it has done.

After being told that I did everything right except 2 samples in the tutorial I am now at 26.9% accuracy. I cannot spot ANY of the patterns I was asked to find in the tutorial except I get shown patterns I could not identify even when folding.

All my hard work in stage 1 seems to have been spat in my face and I hope that if I am not the only one CCP immediately rethinks the entire system.

I like to help but it seems stage 2 is currently not for me.

Is there a reason this thing fails every time even though you correctly select the transits? This is a joke.

There's an obvious problem, since the "correct" answers i get shown after pressing submit seem as random as whatever I selected most of the time...

I'm a little dismayed by the number of missed transits in the calibration samples. "Analysis Failed" indeed. Unfortunately unlike the first Project Discovery there's no option to report questionable examples. Perhaps this is a feature that should be added.

CCP dont put the difficulty in finding a planet.... with random result like we get right now

Make the difficulty to be able to find 2-3 planet...

Maybe you can spot the easy one, but did you miss the less obvious one.

Now it seem, for the eyes of many players, that everything is random and the inconsistent between answer provided doesn't make us feel we are improving...

Totally agree especially after todays update. I had an accuracy of 93% in finding exoplanets. But now the answers are completely random.

It's nealry impossible to hit a correct answer when following the instructions of the tutorial.

A question about design. Why were the light points connected with lines. Finding possible planets is unnecessarily difficult.
On the official site of Planet 9, only points can be seen. By connecting the points to the lines, a visual effect is generated that is too much visual. Currently, the graphical representation looks as if it were the DAX index of Volkswagen on the stock exchange. QuestionQuestion

Did you do the tutorial? It is relatively easy. One must try to find out if a light beam periodically weakens.

had 98% rating on stage 1 ... getting everything wrong here. I thought it was me being bad until I zoomed in all the way on one of the things I "failed". The yellow dots were not showing any indication of a transit, they were completely random and in a lot of cases were humps. Absolutely no signal in the noise. That's when I realized this thing is completely broken.

I've seen this exact project done better before here : https://www.zooniverse.org/projects/ianc2/exoplanet-explorers/classify

Okay there seems to be three categories of samples:
The ones even a 3rd grader could pick out
The not-so-obvious ones that still stand out to a keen eye
And the ones that nothing but an algorithm could have picked out; including their false positives
The overwhelming majority seems to belong to the third kind.

You know, i have a better idea. Why not just have a program like SETI@Home where you let those algorithms (who are much better at this than any of us) run on borrowed CPU time? Most people playing this game good gaming PC's with a lot of firepower, so it would be the perfect fit. You could pay some ISK for every some block of data done. Yes this would allow people to just mine ISK; however they are actively contributing computational power to science; a much more useful contribution if you ask me.

To date I have discovered 200 transits. Some are difficult and some are hard. I am currently level 54 with a 92% accuracy score. I have taken screenshots of nearly almost all successful analysis and some failed analysis.

Exo-Planet Search is a good past time for miners and station dwellers. I have over 50 Exo Planet skins and recently built the Pacifier.

There are hundreds of a thousands of snap shots that CoRot has taken of planets. Sometimes CoRot will same its frame rate at five minutes or 20 minutes. Within the twenty minute time period four snapshots of a sun have been taken compared to the single snapshot of twenty minutes. The data for the five minute snapshots would track a planetary transit much better than the 20 minute snapshot because the downtrend of the planet causing the dip in the light curve is more prevalent.

A planetary transit is basically like being in a PVP battle.

Five minute snapshot - A battleship launches barrage after barrage of missiles at another battleship that consistently reduces the 1st battleships shields creating a dip in the battleships shields that very noticeable.

Twenty minute snapshot - A battleship launches a barrage and then waits a minute to launch the second barrage at the 1st battleship. The damage to the shield of the first battleship is not as noticeable as the shields are recharged in between each attack.

So as you can see having miners and station dwellers using their time in between mining cycles and order placements does help the astronomers manage the data. Data management that would take years to sift through with the limited number of astronomers that astronomy actually has.

The program is also a test of patience that separates those who have to have everything now and really do not want to put the effort into doing anything.
