There's a rich vein of WoW hatred running through the forums, which can easily be dismissed as fanboism just like the assumption that eve is so complicated that you're instantly proving yourself Clever by installing the client. equally other titles like Guild Wars are also kicked in the balls as regularly as possible.
But it did get me thinking.
MMO players are made, not born, so what did you play before you discovered Eve, how do you fink they compare, and why Eve in particular?

Played other games such as L2, Guild Wars, SWG while playing eve but gaining experience from killing the same rubbish little things over and over is too tedious.

This is my first and only MMO type of game. Have only played first person shooter type games before, mainly of the BF2 and Ghost Recon. Got bored with those, a friend showed me Eve, and have been here ever since. --------------------

Eve has been my first mmo. The only other mmo I've played would have been a run in planetside until bfrs spoiled it.
Can't say I really hate wow or other games but I know enough about them to know it's not what I'm looking for.

was a single player for a looong time. got broadband. played WoW from release, but eventually got bored waiting for new content and burned myself out farming PvP rank.
looked for another MMO to fill the geek shaped hole, but City of Heros bored the snot out of me and Planetside was a ghost town by the time i started playing.
stumbled across the new forum of a group of chaps who i'd known in a vague on-line sense for years, and discovered they had an Eve corp. Signed up. Quit. Came back.

Various phases,
started out late on games like Baldur's Gate and other single player RPGs, a couple of SP FPS titles too, but not many.
Then I got into CS 1.6, joined a clan, played online casually. After that a bunch of mates got a Call of Duty: United Offensive clan together, played that prolifically over the massive summer holiday after year 11, doing like 45-50 hours a week.
That carried on for a long while, we fell apart when CoD 2 came out though, half the members wanted to migrate, half didn't =/
Then came Guildwars first, and I finally subbed to EvE after playing through half a dozen trials over the previous 2 years.
Now I'm on EvE, or when I get bored, I can still blow someone's head off on CoD.

EVE was my first MMO. The first game I really fell in love with, was Elite. And Elite II, and hell even First Encounters. I loved them so.
When I moved to Uni, I did online gaming in the form of MUDs (Nanvaent and Thanatos, which I expect no one to recognise).
Stopped for a while, played lots and lots of RTS games. Total War, C&C, that kind of thing. Odd bit of FPS stuff online, but never really got to liking it. Oh, and played Warcraft 3 extensively. And online gamed in it too. But never really saw the appeal of playing an individual character, when I've commanded armies, and conquered worlds.
Then there was EVE, that got described to me (down the pub) as 'Like Elite, but multiplayer', which frankly was just a dream come true.
And... that was about 2 1/2 years ago. Since then, I've bought about 3 games. Rome Total War, Medieval 2, Supreme Commander. Really should stop though, as I don't actually play them all that much.

RTS games, EVE was my first MMOG... WoW isn't my type of game, too little risk involved int it.
Even though i'm not a big pvp fan (ship to ship pvp that is) WoW is a little bit to tame for my taste.

A tale in the desert. Played that from mid beta and about halfway into the first telling. Hard to compare, totally different game.
Have tried some others while taking breaks from eve though.
Anarchy Online - Bought it with some expansion, played for a couple of hours before uninstalling and cancelling. Missions that are even more boring than Eve's, but nothing else to do and crappy graphics = one crappy game.
World of warcraft - Managed to play it for almost a month before cancelling.
Everquest II - Quite fun distraction, a lot more fun than WoW with some pretty decent PVE content. Lots and lots and lots of missions and some really nice graphics. Held out for almost 3 months before i decided to give it up and get a third EVE account instead.
City Of Villains - Wonderful character creation, good RP. Crappy gameplay. Just grinding very similar missions over and over again.
Saga Of Ryzom - Very good skill/levelsystem. Nice graphics and very nice community. Actually it was/is a great game even though it is very rough around the edges. (Would need a lot of work on missions, UI and other things. You really notice that they didnt have the manpower to spend to much time on a lot of things). I never actually grew tired of Ryzom, eve was just better and no time to play two games for any length of time.
Thing is i know that every time i try a new game its just for a little while. It never takes more than a couple of months before i start to miss the Eve universe. I think the single shard nature of Eve has a big part in this. Every other game seems lacking in depth when you are used to the kind of politics, markets etc you get on a single huge server.

Before I was exposed to eve I played:
- www.hyperiums.com This game is a scifi strategy game, were you control planets and fleets, invade and destroy others, for alliances and have fun. 3/10 compared to Eve. Free but you need to acquire 'credits' to use some advanced tech.
- www.nationstates.net Another multiplayer strategy game that places you in charge of a fictional nation you create. The free game offers a nice little userface with some alliance options (regions), but 99% of the game is on the forums / player/region forums. Its an RP game for the most part. 3/10 compared to Eve.
And other games I played before eve, I still play now suck as: - Counter-strike - Battlefield 2 and now Battlefield 2142 (omg-bbq-pwn-!!!!) - Dawn of War - Company of Heroes * * * http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=euZ0j7vtKEQ

I used to play Jumpgate (I think it's still running actually, but very few people play). It was pretty good actually - PvP was more fun, because you had a*****pit-eye view and guns always pointed forwards so you actually had to fly fancy manouvres and aim your guns. --------------------------------------------------------------------

WoW - Beautiful world, great transferred setting. Low-Level gameplay is brilliant and interesting. Endgame content is a boring, mindless grind with anonymous or much to large groups. Basically: Level 1-30 (or so) - great game; Level cap - graphical chat interface while killing <random monster spawn> with 40 people as often per week as you can afford.
Class balancing is nonexistant, because of PvP concerns. PvP does not belong into this game, but was included for business reasons. Community is based around some very very nice people, and a majority of epeen-"look I have more epix then you"-kids. (And very cute girls play this game!)
The interface is the best game interface created today, fully customizable.
All impression based on EU realms.
Rating: 7/10 <Level 30, 3/10 Endgame, 6/10 RP, 2/10 PvP
I played a little bit of UO on german freeshards, but that game had never fascinated me.
Now in comparision, EVE. - Interesting gameplay and world setting, really big universe. As a new player, gameplay is absolutly boring, sitting around, waiting for skills to learn. You can go mining, missioning or die in combat PvP. Perhaps "endgame" aka "you now have enough SP to fly something which can actually do something" will be more interesting.
Overall nice community, helpful to new players. You can play as good, neutral or evil, basically. You can choose what your professions are, no EXP grind and class/level system (replaced with the ISK-grind ofc).
The interface totally *****, non customizable, laggy. This game has no sound (unless you extract the soundfiles manually and play them in Winamp...).
Rating: 3/10 gameplay with low SP, 7/10 community, 9/10 for setting and freedom. Cant comment on endgame, fleet battles, more pvp then "look there is an interceptor, tackle him. - damn too fast".
I would never go back to WoW at this point. The game is ruined for me, with the new patches and the addon. Yes I was the second druid (and top-10 player) on my realm at level 70 after the expansion hit. You need some time to realize that this game is not as good as you think. Since I were only interested in PvE, all those PvP > all changes in WoW basically canceled my account. I can chat with my friends without paying money to see an elf running around while typing. It would be a good game, and I do not hate it. It is just no longer something I truly enjoy playing.
I am unsure about EVE. It surely has potential, but progression is way too slow. Waiting 30 days just for 1 skill to complete, which has no real effect on what you can do is a little bit disappointing. I have found a great corp; small but with very nice players. I enjoy playing with them, even if I mostly hinder them in some way because of my low SP (wanted to low-sec gatecamp and me in a frigate ).
I have found no other mmorpg which suited my needs yet, so I stay here a little bit longer. We'll see what happens. ___

nice topic.
I started my onlinegaming career with Dark Age of Camelot. and quit that because i am a PvP person, and in Daoc no-one with a life besides the game, can keep up with the equipment/level grind, because each time you come even close to the top, a new expansion gets added.
In eve this is totaly diffrent for 2 reasons: 1) offline skill training. 2) skill system vs. level system.
You can specialize in something, and reach the cap in this Field, and this cap is rarely expanded. So, you can choose what you want to do, and excell in it without 12 hours grinding a day.

My first MMO was Asheron;s Call. I had no idea what to do. So I played for the 30 trial and left.
Next was DAOC, started on Mordred and played until radar was so rampant that you just could not level anymore. So I switched to a carebare server with friends and I'm still playing it.
Played WoW, where I have 4 level 60's+ and 1 level 70. Stopped playing that, it's all about me me me. A game with 7 million people and 0 community.
Played EQ2 for a while. Until I realized the awful grind this was going to be.
Giving EvE a second look, Doing missions and baught a frigate upgrade. Only to have one given to me as a reward after 3 more missions DOH!. I'm in the 3'rd day of the trial. I'm enjoying it. The game is really complex in some aspect.
So far so good, Got some tells asking to join different Corps but I need to understand more of what's going on first. The guides are dry and don't convey the feel or consequences of my actions or choices.
Rambled enough :-)

Ultima Online was my first back in '97/98
Didn't try any others until around 2001/2. Then went through:
SWG - up until the changes that destroyed it. Planetside - lasted around 2 years. Hot drops are fun :) Anarchy Online - still play this, but with a free account - can just stomach the leveling. Saga of Ryzom - interesting game with good animal AI (they hunt each other!), but left after a while EQ2 - leveling, bah WoW - pretty, had to try it... but leveling Entropia - okay ish... but didn't like the model. Auto Assault - buggies are fun... but not really good enough for a subscription. City of Heroes - men in tights! Got bored quickly though... maybe because of the tights. Vanguard - released too early... it shows that they ran out of money. Guildwars - fun, free.. haven't played it much recently though.
Ultima remains the one with the most in depth gameplay.. totally free form! EvE comes closest to Ultima, but with big shiny spaceships.
It's a shame there are not more sci-fi themed MMOGs, maybe Starcraft - although that is likely to be WoW in space, pretty, polished, but mass market leveling

Played a lot of X2 The Threat a while back. When X3 came out I was scouring the forums for some solution to the hideous lag and saw numerous references to EvE online. Thought I'd give it a try, never looked back.
EvE is a truly awesome game. I've never played any other MMOs, and (apart from Infinity Quest for Earth if it ever comes out) I don't plan to.

I played WoW when it 1st came out and quit in 4 weeks, I just recently tried WoW again as a lot of co-workers play and I couldn't stomache it past 3 months. I have tried many other MMO's DnD, AC 1 and 2, FF11, almsot all these I played the trial and quit. EVE is by far the best out there for me.

Guild Wars. Still do, actually. I got really ticked off after the developers extended the Christmas event last year (because of the Earthquake in the Far East). It wasn't the actual extension, but largely because during such events, all the stupid people show up asking the same questions that were answered 5 seconds ago. And I wasn't in the mood for another week of that!
At first I tried to give WoW a go, but I got put off by the idiotic patch sizes, then I found a PC ZONE disc with EVE on it, thought 'something different from fantasy', installed, patched and played.

What did I play? Oh..I remember I played Pong, Leisure Suit Larry, Sims City, Myst, King's quest, Civilization, Sonic, Oblivion and many many more single player games on consoles and pc's.
Then I discovered MMO's. It started with the Earth and Beyound and after that The Sims Online, ATITD, SWG, WoW, DDO, Guild Wars, AO, Rappelz, Lotro and maybe I forgot a few. Part of them is not before Eve, since I still play WoW, GW, AO. The strange thing is that I'm not even a hardcore player. I play about 10-20 hours p/week.
My main draw to most games is trading and social systems, although I also like some action at times. I'm a female player, so that might also explain why I like games like Sims. I don't like just playing one game, although sometimes I am suddenly very attracted to a game for some weeks or months. Eve is ok, but there are many more nice games (including WoW).

In the hunt for a change of game, I have recently tried a trial of star wars galaxies, that was a waste of time IMHO! - So EVE lives on for me :)

Started off with some RTS and FPS multiplayer games, moved on to Neverwinter nights with all addons (played on the 3 kingdoms rp server)
then I picked up this magazine one day with a free 14 day trial of some game called Eve-online, tried it out ... it sucked the first time round.
1 Month later tried again but this time read the forums like a bible tried to understand as much as possable now I am hooked.

Edited by: Plutoinum on 02/05/2007 12:47:33 Neocron-1 for 2 years or so since beta and Neocron-2 for a few months. Started with the best mix of clan and faction pvp, roleplay / ingame politics and shooter action. Somehow the devs screwed up, ****** up the balance and new content came too slow. ( That's when I had my 1st EVE visits). They let the community wait an eternity for the 'expansion' Neocron-2 and when it came, it turned out that it didn't make things better, but screwed some of the fun aspects of the game up. Established clans went away and those players were the most valuable asset in the game, since they made content, politics, action. My clan left too. Many hated us, but after we were gone we were missed, because we were one of those, who made action with our raids and stuff. Really funny.
Ok, that was about my first MMORPG and were I had the best time and most pvp fun with a clan.
After that I've played, Planetside. Was a fun pvp, but lacks 'RPG' depth like ingame politics. It's a massive tactical shooter. I prefer conflicts that start with politics/diplomacy and end with heavy gun fire.
Tried anarchy empire, swg, several betas, was not convinced. Played EVE again.
Then got dragged to WoW by my old Neocron Clan. Best PvE gameplay for guilds that I've ever seen in a MMORPG and especially with friends it was fun.
Afer half a year I came back to EVE. I'm playing some MMORPG trials from time to time or apply for betas, but I haven't found another game so far with a concept that convinces me. I like clanplay, pvp, conflict, reasons to fight for with a lot of blabla around it.
But most games are just killing monsters, grinding up, or real conflicts between players is avoided. The 'Be nice !' games. I'm not interested to be nice, when I am at war or at least I like to have the choice, if I want to be nice or not. SO I think I'm trapped in EVE for a while. ___________ Muuuhhh !!! |

LOL .. looking at previous posts i noticed you all come from very different types of MMO's then me
Started With "Monster and Me" which basically was bot heaven .. and got ruined by chinese ppl takin over when there server was shut down.
After that i played "Thang Online" where i was a Guardian which is the same as a GM.
Done a bit of "Martial Heroes" and "Silkroad Online" before staying a while at "TurfBattles" Left Turfbattles after they had a database crash and there backup wasn't working the whole time!!!!!!!
Just before i joined EVE i found myself playing "Entropia Universe" for a few months.
Think ill try to stay here for a while more :)

Originally by: James Lyrus EVE was my first MMO.
OMG! Except for the Muds, you could have been my clone

I played PlanetSide for a while before eventually cancelling, can't actually remember why. I think it was because of the (then) non-existant long term goals.
Played the month of WoW that came with the purchase, never renewed my subscription. I didn't actively dislike it, I'm actually a big fan of the Warcraft line of products, but it was just too repetitive, and basically too much like a single player game to pay money for it.

Oh my... EQ1, DAoC, AO, City of Heroes, City of Villains, EQ2, Guild Wars, SWG, WoW, RYL, Maple Story, AC1, AC2, Auto Assault, LOTRO, Archlord, Lineage, Lineage 2, Vanguard, literally hundreds of non-mmo titles, including consoles (nintendo, snes, genesis, ps1, ps2, ps3, xbox, xbox360, wii..) I think I have played nearly every single major MMO to date that has been released in a store that I could buy and try. I have played most of them for at LEAST a month, some longer, some MUCH longer (EQ1 for 2 years, still play DAoC) and of course, Eve.
Eve is one of the short list of games that I continue to play. I can play it casually, hardcore, stop playing for a few months, come back. It's always fun, and even when not playing I can train skills and not be really far out of whack when I come back. I have an addictive personality, so I get REALLY hooked on something for a while, then switch. I like to call it VGADD, video game attention deficit disorder, its expensive let me tell you.
Eve is good fun, and has easily the best community and best open ended gameplay ever. Most games you level up and then do something bigger, in a mostly linear path. Eve has completely warped this model in that you will learn more skills, but someone two weeks into the game can take down someone that has been playing for years, given the situation. Its great, I'm permanently hooked, if my attention is a bit fleeting =)

I think since the Eve devs are ex Ultima players that much of what I liked about Ultima is now in Eve.

My very first 'mmo' would have been neverwinter nights in 94/95(not the new one, the old one on AOL that got shut down in '97), spent way too much money on phone bills playing that (did not have any local #'s to connect to) so shied away from mmos for quite a while.
Played alot of fps's (doom/duke nukem up to halflife/quake3). Got into playing Team Fortess Classic a whole lot, then a roommate brought home DAOC. I watched him play for a couple hours then he had to go to work, so I hopped on his PC and make a character, then went out and bought the game the next day XD.
Played DAOC for about 5 years. In the last few years I skipped around trying other MMO's, they all sucked (AO, DDO among others), during that time I tried EVE and ended up playing for a few months, but kept getting flak from my wife about having so many game accounts open (2 on daoc and 2 in EVE), so went back to playing daoc for a bit, but things were really getting stale/grindey, so I just gave up on all mmos for a little bit.
In that interim period my wife wanted to try WoW as her sister plays it. We lasted about 3 weeks and gave up on that. A little later we tried EQ2, that was a tiny bit better, but we only made it a few months there.
So now, for me, EVE is the only MMO, and mainly because I can keep doing all the things I want to do in RL while still maintaining character advancement in the game, just have to time my training right. -=^=-

I tried WoW once because I got a 10 days trial from a friend, and I loved it, bought the game but canceled my subscription 2 days later I also played (and still play) a variety of FPS and RTS games like CS:S and the C&C series.

This Fred's quite interesting reading.
Upto the early 2000's FPS was clearly the daddy when it came to multiplayer (largely for want of any real competition, with hindsight) and whilst online-RTS has remained relatively constant, from people's posts here i'd hazard a guess that the success of titles like WoW and EvE have decimated public counterstrike servers.
Although the Eve forums aren't representative of anything beyond what happens to people if they spend waaay to much time alone indoors, obv.

I was unfortunate enough to play Final Fantasy XI since north american launch. I finaly branched out and tried a few other MMO's and realized how gerneric and poorly designed FFXI is, not to mention the craptastic graphics and other limitations of the game due to support for the PS2. After 3 years of FFXI I decided it was retarded to pay sqaure enix 15 bucks a month to LFG for 5 hours, get a group, and have said group fall apart after two fights and be back to square one of the LFG proccess. I tried Eve, played for a few hours, deleted my FFXI characters, cancelled my FFXI acounts and never looked back! I have always loved games where you played realtime against others and not the computer, so i was playing a MUD(moongate) when i first heard about Everquest. The second that was released i bought it. Still remember when i logged on first time. I was defenatly hooked. remind you that was back in 33.6modem, athlon500 and i think the i had the first Geforce DDR card and even then i was amazed to what they had accomplished. I played EQ for about 3 years on a pvpserver. At that time i was trying to convince friends with programmingskills to make Elite-online. Then i heard about Shadowbane which should be more towards pvp then EQ ever was. I dropped the onlinecommunity when i realized i was online more than was healthy. Somehow i got an email sent to ccp about beta in Eve and i got into the beta. To bad they had no tutorial whatsoever and I dismissed the game when i couldnt steer my ship with my mouse, like in Elite. Thats what i call a BIG mistake. Since shadowbane seemed to flopp i was happy with my life until i got into beta of WoW... played that with a couple of friends till i relized that i once again was online more then healthy for my social life. Then this friend that i had tried to convince eariler to play Eve said he had started to play Eve and sent me a 30-daytrial.... took one week then i had 2 accounts... then powerof2 came and i had 3 accounts..been playing for 1.5 years now.. Still sad i didnt play from beginning because i think games like these have the explorationpart only in the beginning when you actually can be first to find some remote desolate part of the world.

Edited by: Broska on 02/05/2007 14:48:03 I think this is in the right order:
Legend of Mir - Was alright but was 2d and alot LOT of griding.
SWG - Was good for a while, but they kept delaying the Combat Upgrade so I left. Good thing too because the when the NGE came it was terrible.
Everquest - Good game but the graphics were too outdated when I played.
Everquest 2 - Not the same gameplay as EQ2 but great storylines and good leveling system, good graphics, played it for a long time till I became more involved in EVE.
Planetside - Such an awsome game which was ruined by BFR's in one foul swoop.
Navy Field - Still play this on and off, somthing abit differant.
Legend of Mir 3 - Same as Legend of Mir 2, but they charged more. Left quickly.
WoW - Good beta, crap release, mainly the age problem.
Auto Assault - Had such high hopes for this game but turned out to be rubish.
EVE, Planetside and EQ2 are the three game's i've really stuck with and EVE is the one I love most and am still subscribed to. ------------------------------

Runescape
I tried WoW but the whole "run into dungeon, kill 1 monster, run out before you die or join a grind group" routine wasn't that appealing to me, plus the thought of paying a subscription fee after buying a game was stupid to me. Since Runescape doesn't have a subscription fee and can be played in the internet browser I got into it on a casual basis (playing during slow days at school, ect.). Overall not a bad game considering the price (zilch) but the sheer volume of leet-speaking 10 year olds and idiots (hell I ran into some guy spouting neo-**** rhetoric one time) kept it from being a long-term thing. I discovered EVE during a particularly boring spring break, from when I first undocked I was hooked and haven't looked back or canceled my subscription since.
I tried SWG when I was starting to burn out on EVE but the problem of leet-speaking 10 year olds and retards crept back up again; that combined with the overall feeling of Sony just waiting for the game to die caused me to come running back to EVE. So for all it's faults EVE is still the best MMO on the market in my opinion . -----------------------------

MMOs - Ultima Online (free shards on emulators), Ragnarok Online (free shards on emulators), GuildWars (still there, MPD :-))
Online - Counter-Strike, Quake (1,2,3), Unreal Tournament (all versions)
I miss the GuildWars UI it was perfect in almost every way. I got fed up with the instancing nature of that great game so I returned to EVE.
Originaly I play support roles (priest, healer, whatever you name it) and am gravitating to miner in EVE (not much keen on PvP).

My next pure online game was Eve, when some buddies got me to check out the beta. I've tried other MMOs since then on trial, but every trial I have gotten sucked, particularly on company support. For some reason, if a game company website doesn't have forums, how to guides, etc on it (instead of just links to fansites) I just get immediately turned off. CCP spoiled me for all other games, I suppose.

In L2 you can be killed at any time, at any place by anyone except in towns. The loss in pvp is real as you can lose alot of exp(training time) with a death, and also can lose equipment if chaotic that would take months to replace.

My first MMO was Eve back when it first started but stopped playing it after 3 months. Then I followed this path: Horizons AO SWG EQ2 WOW Then back to Eve in August of 2006
Horizons confused me. Anarchy Online was ok but got bored. Left SWG just before the Big Nerf. Before the nerf (and before they let everyone and their dog be a Jedi) I was having fun. EQ2 was ok but it looked funny with all the mobs just standing around. Wow is a beautiful game and with 8 characters per server it can last a long time but I got burned out. Played WOW from Jan 2005 to Aug 2006.
Eve is different in that it hurts to actually loose stuff. And I have always liked SciFi games. ---------------------- Boom goes the ship! Squish goes the pilot!

I played console games since age 6 when I received my Atari 2600 for Christmas.
Owned a Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, Playstation, Playstation 2, Sega Saturn, Gameboy, Gameboy Advanced, Nintendo DS.
I had a friend I was stationed with that was big into online PC gaming. I personally didn't have an interest because...
1. I was ignorant to how games on a computer could be any good 2. I didn't understand the controls 3. Didn't own a computer at the time, so I didn't care.
Over time, he got me to sit down with a game and try it. That game happened to be EQ.....yeah. It's safe to say my consoles collected dust since then. I occassionally play my PS2, but no where NEAR as much as my PC now.
PC Titles I've played before EVE...
1. BF:1942 2. BF: Vietnam 3. BF: 2142 4. Doom 3 5. Freelancer 6. Stronghold 2 7. Command & Conquer (Pick one) 8. Morrowind 9. Fable 10.EQ 11.City of Villians 12. WoW 13. Dungeon Siege 1 & 2 14. Mount & Blade
I'm sure their are more I can't think of atm. Like another posted above...I played EVE a while ago, quit, and returned recently.

I started playing MMO's with Artifact about 7-8 years ago then discovered Mankind which was a fantastic concept of a game, like a persistant RTS in space with a similar free form nature as Eve where all the content was player driven using the tools provided. I played Mankind for a couple of years and enjoyed the open PvP, politics and player-centric nature of the game.
When Mankind started going downhill due to lack of funding, dev support, aging graphics and an enormous amount of cheating I started looking for alternatives.
I beta tested Planetside and Eve (got into one of the later beta stages), loved Planetside and hated Eve during beta. So I played Planetside through beta and for the first few months of retail before coming back to Eve two months after release to join most of my friends from Mankind who were by that time all playing Eve (corps such as HMMI, CoRM, EOG, BNC's precursors and a few others I can't remember now all have their origins in Mankind).
Along the way I also beta tested WoW then gave up on it after release, same with SWG as the PvP content of both was just nowhere near as enthralling as Eve. I've tried a few others like Anarchy Online, RF Online etc. but was singularly unimpressed by all of them.
Until another game with the same sandbox and open PvP approach as Eve comes along which tempts me I'll always stick with Eve as my number one online past time.

I've subbed to AO, Shadowbane and antoher of them games that i can remember. They all mostly sucked.
As far as actually playing goes: Ultima Online. Can't remember when I started it, but it was before the whole trammelisation thing. And to think the thing mostly annoying me in that patch was that i had to carry a spellbook in my frigging hand in order to cast from then on :p
Anyways, that was mostly it. Tried some other random games here and there, like Ryzom that was pretty nice community wise, but they all lack player-driven content.

While I stopped playing other games when I first discovered Eve, as I do when I get new games, I'm now back to playing my single player games and RTSes alongside it.
Currently playing Tomb Raider, Company of Heroes, Dawn of War, UT2K4 and Eve.
I never have and never will play another MMO, as in general they don't interest me, but Eve got it more or less right so I've stuck with it. -

I've heard that it is just mindless eye candy. Of course, that's from the CoH crowd, and CoH is to C&C as Eve is to WoW (at least as far as they are concerned).
Anyway, I suck at RTSes, and CoH is slightly less suseptible to rushes than most, so I'll be sticking with that mostly. -

97... bought a pc, that could actualy play games.
Q2 was everything i pretty much did, too far hooked in to it tbh.. something id never do again.
great bunch of people that were around in the scene at the time though, sound game, i was ranked as one of the best around.... very little immaturity in the scene at the time... something you could never say about fps's these days or indeed nearly every onliner around... pretty much why i droped out in the end.... after the winding road of tfc/tribes 2/bf. before taking an interest in online racers.. the nascar series, gpl from pappy.... next stop eve.
Now im just back to casuals... on/off BF2..... not so much on/at the computer these days. ______

I'm currently a fan of Medieval Total War II and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. BUT : I'm a real and total fanboy of Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy (you know, like a passionated child screaming for Christmas presents, or more... err... I'm 30 :p).
EvE is about my first MMO. I love space games, EvE is about all I love in space games (but the joystick :/). Online, I've played a little of the 4th Prophecy before, that is all. -----

FPS junky. I always come back to CSS but I've played Call of Duty 2, Unreal Tournament 2004, and back in the day, Halo PC.
Eve's my first subscription MMO, I also play some Guild Wars with friends on occasion. GW is fun when you have some good friends to play with but the community is filled with 'tards.
Before Eve I had my mind made up that paying a monthly fee for a game was stupid and that I'd never end up doing that. For once, I was wrong.
I've played a lot of other games too such as NWN, Diablo, GRAW, etc. but Eve has a lasting charm to it.

Shadowbane - really cool concept if anyone ever heard of it. The market system certainly wasn't as complex, but players could own NPC run shops, build cities/castles, and destroy other castles. It was very much about PVP, since the PvE component didn't last long - you could hit max level in less than a month. Too bad the game had horrible lag/bug problems and the graphics were dated.
WoW - I took a break from EVE and played WoW. After 6 months I had hit lvl 60 and got tired of raiding, so I went back to EVE.

<brag w/ e-peen> Jumpgate, I had the world's best kill ratio :) People feared me so much they were commiting suicides when they'd see me on scanner!
In Eve your "skill" is time you spend, experience and dedication. No situational awareness needed here, I've never been trying to know what's behind, beside or over me at which angle with what speed compared to mine that all might change within the next 5 seconds while trying to keep the target in your gunsights... In Jumpgate it was ability to maneuver with close-to-space-like physics and situational awareness. It wouldn't matter if you played only 30 minutes the day :( I miss it :(
EVE is way bigger though, has conspiracies, the biggest player guilds ever seen and a much bigger social factor. No room for single heroes, but it still rocks.
I also played Planetside as SL in DRUCKWELLE, best european guild. Vanu! Wh00t. </brag, thank you for reading> _______________________________________________________________________ Trey Azagthoth > Youre my idol Jocool. I wanna be like Jocool jr. or Jocool the sequel! Oveur > ohnoes jocool |

Edited by: Soporo on 02/05/2007 20:20:55 My first MMO was City of Heroes/Villains, which I still play. (on Virtue, join my SG/VG!)
Before that it was always games like Mech Commander series, Mechwarrior series, BF series, Freelancer, Ghost Recon series, Rainbow Six series, and various other games that I played with a group of about 6-8 friends.
To be perfectly honest COH/V's boards are vastly superior in content, information and tone comparred to EVE's. It was quite a shock coming to these boards from there let me tell you. The general tone on Virtue server is invariably helpfull and finding a team is quite easy. A lot of people Solo their whole career which is actually viable there.
In COH/V, also called CO-X, the pvp is pretty good; but its by pvp Zone or Arena which of course is completely different from EVE. For the most part it was designed as a PVE game, but people play it strictly for the PvP as well.
Regardless, EVE has it's worth and depth in a very different way, but it's getting a bit stale to be honest. IMO, small Alliances and small Corp's are greatly limited in EVE, the world seems to be shrinking, and Metagaming is the word of the day. Huge time sinks, Macro-miners, endless alts, macro-ratters, 'plex farming, capitals, super-capitals and all things POS and Sov are frankly quite boring/assinine/aggravating.

started out late on games like Baldur's Gate and other single player RPGs, a couple of SP FPS titles too, but not many.

In order the MMORPGs I played:
1- EQ. I played this for over a year or two, very boring.
2- SWG. I played this from release on June 26, 2003 to the "Great Catastrophe" the NGE on November 15, 2005. Was a wonderful game, would still be playing it today if it still existed. (I may play a emulation of the pre-NGE game to be quite honest)
3- DnL. Ha ha ha ha ha, I'm a tool and a moron.
4- Saga of Ryzom. A lot like SWG, but missing a lot as well.
5- Eve. I truly wish instead of playing SWG, I played this in 2003. The "Great Catastrophe" could have been avoided and I would be better off now.
Games I tried but never played for any long period of time:
WoW- the REAL EQ 2... LotR- Meh... Vanguard- Too much leveling...

MMO players are made, not born, so what did you play before you discovered Eve, how do you fink they compare, and why Eve in particular?
well your last paragraph confuses me because since mmo players are made not born you would think not everyone played an mmo before eve

It all started with Starcraft. Back then, I was thinking "ahh, RTS. Best gaming ever. forget FPSes and all!" Then I got sucked into Halo. At this point, I was like "okay, maybe FPSes are pretty awesome. But wow that World of Warcraft stuff, lol how stupid. MMOs are so not for me." Then i got introduced to EVE.
Live and learn, i suppose.
I played a bunch of other games inbetween, such as GTA, BF2, NFS:MW, and Shattered Galaxy, but those were quick phases. I still play Halo regularly, and I would play Starcraft too if my CD still worked. Oh well. -------

Started out on Jumpgate and made it level 50 Optimus.Only game i have ever reached top level. Loved the game for twitch flight engine. No point and click in this game. Quit because of the long flight times. When you were loaded it could take over 1 hour to get anywhere. MACK was where it was at. Nothing like seeing 20 tows flying in formation with fighter coverage to provide equipment. Just returned to the game.Loved the sense of community in that game. Former DJ on MACK radio and Jumpgate Pirate Radio. Longest show record 24 hours!!
Joined Eve during beta however quit becuase my son was always training and I was never getting any training time. This was back when MOO was big. Returned about 2 years ago and rejoined my old Jumpgate guild mates playing.
Played Earth And Beyond with my daughter. Sorry to see that game disappear. Loved the cloaking ships and trying to get close to a pilot to jumpstart them and get out before i got toasted.
Moved to SWG. Love the game until combat upgrade and NGE ruined it for me.
Dabbled with COH.
Currently playing some WOW for a change of pace.
Before all of this it was Command and Conquer, Starcraft, and Total Annahiltion(sp)

7 years as a top-end logistics leader in Everquest. Beta'd a couple expansions and literally wrote the code to fix a 2 year old quest bug, but after the awful recent expansions and the problems that came with them I decided I'd had enough. Almost went to the first summit they had a few years back, but since I wasn't 21 at the time there wouldn't have been much of a point.
Spent about 800 hours parsing and testing some problems and ended up writing I think 30-40 pages on the subject, now I can't even remember most of what it was about. I did get to leave a few friends some nice info on bugs before I left, because devs decided to ignore numerous bug reports, posts, mails, and even direct conversation.
Eve has an excellent reputation in the gaming community, and I don't regret the move for a second.
o/ Redhenna, I remember you from back when TSW was good. I stopped playing on Luclin in about 1999 though, you probably wouldn't recognize me. |

Before EVE, I have to say best space sim was the game Independence War I and II. These two games had the best in game physics, nice modelling and an intriguing storyline. The dogfights were the best i ever had too.
EVE is fun but it isnt a true space sim its more like a strategy space game. Having said that, EVE is the only space MMO game on the market thats worth playing. If CCP ever moves in the direction of IWAR II style of gameplay it would be the bomb. |

Eve is the first MMO ive ever played, and i cant see myself playing another one really. PVP in eve is unmatched, I still get an adrenaline rush sometimes from it, I never imagined a video game could do that.
Most other MMO's just seem to be clones of each other, casting magical spells on elves/dwarves/etc, doing mindless repetitive tasks to "level up". That kinda crap just seems really fruity and boring to me.
As for non-MMO's before EVE i played Live for Speed (a race simulator) and CS mostly. I still play them sometimes, but I almost always play eve instead :) I do still play some Nintendo games from time to time too, Mario 3 ftw!

it looks like it makes sense, it sounds like it makes sense, but it dosen't. like graham norton's inexplicable popularity.
if thats your way of asking for clarification ill grant it to you
your last paragraph clearly states Quote: MMO players are made, not born, so what did you play before you discovered Eve, how do you fink they compare, and why Eve in particular
now - many people answered clearly not trying to comprehend that last paragraph
it comes down to this -you stated that mmo players arent born hence they arent mmo players from birth but some particular mmo makes them an mmo player -then you asked what we played before and how it compares
now asking how anything that is not an mmp compares to an mmo would be foolish so we can understand that you are referring to mmos
now my answer was Quote: well your last paragraph confuses me because since mmo players are made not born you would think not everyone played an mmo before eve
such as myself
-meaning that even though you seem to understand that not everyone plays an mmo from the first time they start playing games online - you still phrase your words in such a way as to ask how the mmos people played before compare
-this confuses me - and i have not played an mmo before eve
ok ?
Quote: urgh. stoppit with the weak flamey argumentativeness already. you're not even very good at it.
good at what? im not trying to be good at anything Quote:

Jumpgate. Started it during the first phases of EU Beta, had a quick visit in the US one aswell. Good mechanics, excellent and challenging PvP, and a collection of very nice ideas overall. Too bad the whole "open end pvp world" which actually serves as the sandbox for politics and wars, was in the end ruined by rulebook-mongering internet game lawyers who howled bans and restrictions for people who chose to make things boom instead of talking pretty. Shame, really.
Had a damn good squad too... :)

Well well, lets see if i can get this together :)
At first i was into Shooters ...
Quakeworld, Quake2, Quake3 - played on Tournament level, won quite alot of stuff back then :)
I did play Neocron (1+2) for ages with a month not playing here and there but always returning - The clan made all the difference :) Freedom Force FTW
I did play SWG on the side - had some fun there, made a lot of money but when the hologrind started and i got Master Bio Engineer or something i quit
I played WoW too - a few chars to 30-40 and a priest to 60 - went to MC twice, did some BGs - decided the endgame sucks like hell and quit
(insert more Neocron here ;) )
Then we decided to give EvE a go - and woah, what a game :)
Love it - don`t think another game will come close in the next time :)

Everquest (4 years): Unfortunately I picked a cleric as my main. It basically boils down to sitting on Your ass, meditating to regain mana, while watching the other players health barsа When I finally quit I felt no remorse, only relief.
Planetside (1 year): Great game! But it did indeed lack long term goals, so Yeahа I heard about this Icelandic game and thought why not?
EVE (<1 year): Landed, as a n00b, in what became the GNW, on the PA side. Login traps, repeatedly podded, safespotting for weeks on end in contested systems (BKG anyone?), smack talk, dual MWDs, outskilled and (probably) outclassed, and finally some more smack talk. I was intrigued, by the political backdrop, and the fact that You could pretty much keep evolving Your character foreverа But I was disappointed with a number of things within the PA alliance. But first and foremost I was bored and war wearyа Then I heard about this Beta test.
WoW (still playing): Was in Beta, and played it since. Really enjoyed the leveling game, but yeah ы the end game sure is repetitive. If You have to get 20 ы 40 people together to make a dent in the harder instances, it becomes a logistic and administrative nightmare.
Planetside (couple of months): а So I went back to PS for a while. Still loved the game. The continental, or even world, spanning tactics. The frantic fightsа but after a while I hit the new level фroofц, and again ы no long term goals. It was фsame old, same oldц, day after day.
EVE: So last autumn I saw on the web that my old corp mates had started up again, and ы hey ы IЖm back in EVE.

Edited by: Encad Briht on 03/05/2007 10:32:50 Well, where to begin ...
I think my addiction to vid games in general started very early, at least with a schneider PC thats older then me (and is still working fine) and elite, didnt get much into that as 3-5 year old boy. Played later a lot on a macintosh, those my father had in his company, which meaned a lot Descent II (Descent Series is still OMG) and starcraft, which i played occasionally online, when we got dial-up internet.
Later then i had a mediocre PC on which i played a lot X-btf and X-T after a friend of mine brought it to me. At the time we got broadband i made a short trial in jumpgate, after getting an add of them, liked it, but wasnt really my style and i hadnt the money back then to pay for an MMO. So, short before x¦ hit the shelves i took a look after some MP Action on their side and found their page about XOL, which i was amazed of and searched for something similar in the net. Well, i stumpled across more space sim, like I-War 2 (goddamn great, atari should make a fecking sequel), Freelancer and the whole SFC series. in the autumn of that year i searched again in egosofts forums to get some info, if there was a way to play X on MP. Stumbled across a link to EVEs Page, couldnt find a trial back then, and just ordered a complete first month with an account creation. First log-in and the first views was like OMFG, was full-time addict since then.
edit : Tried a lot of MMOs and betas since, bit none made it to meet my expectations or to exceed it, like eve did in the first two weeks. (EVE made me kinda incomplatible to lvl grind :-/)

I startet the mmorpg-world with Asherons Call, quitt it after the beta.
Bevore and during the closed beta of eve i ve played Lineage2 for almost 2 years. The chronic 2 wich were released 2004 i guess, forced me to quitt that game too. A developer who force player to hunt/play together (in parties)has no idea how different players can be.
I really can say that eve give me all i ever want when i saw si-fi series. Now i have a lill idea how the realtinships in maybe 2200 can be developed if we have reached the galaxy as a home in big Stations.
But i hope it will be more civil like it is atm in EvE ......anyway this is a Game and what we all want is to have FUN FUN FUN

Anarchy Online Shadowbane Earth and Beyond Neocron (sp?) Dark Age of Camleot City of Heros/Villains Asheron's Call 2 DnD Online Everquest Everquest 2 Guild Wars Star Wars Galaxies RF Online The Matrix Online Vanguard (Cancelled within a record 30 minutes) Horizons World of Warcraft Lineage 2 Final Fantasy XI Savage (doesn't stricly count as an MMO) Neverwinter Nights (again not exactly an MMO) Neverwinter Nights 2 (see above)

Do any of you remember a game called VGA Planets? It was an offline mmo before there were mmoЖs. You played a turn, plotted course, mined, built ships, made war, colonized planets, then uploaded the turn file to a BBS for processing. The next day, you downloaded your turn to see the events play out on your screen. It was my first online game but it was a bit before Netscape came to be on the internet. It is striking how the concept is similar between Eve and that primitive game back then.
Next was EQ which I played from beta to the present.
A brief foray into WoW which I did not care for, then Vanguard for a month where I read mention of Eve in the VG forums, and here I am.
I continue to harass more of my EQ friends to make the switch so that we may give rise to a new breed of player. Stand aside Carebears.. make way for the EQbears :)

Ultima Online Everquest (not enough PVP) Dark Age of Camelot Shadowbane (not enough polish) City of Heroes (Endless Grind/No pvp) World of Warcraft World of Warcraft/EvE LOTRO/EvE (Banned from WoW)
EvE is more of a secondary game for me. I don't really play it much, because I'm somewhat limited at the moment. I need to keep my character down at my corp's POS for mining permatank duty, and he's training for Carrier so I basically have a good few months where I never need to log in.
Plenty of people will contest this but WoW is, IMHO, the "Best" overall MMO on the market at the moment. It's extremely accessible, easy on the PC, has loads of PVE content, has a robust PVP system, and is based in a lore that brings the player's character into the story.
Unfortunately the company running it (Blizzard) has recently taken a hard line stance toward illegal/cheating activities, and as a result is alienating and persecuting otherwise innocent and faithful subscribers. At this point you can easily get someone banned by sending them a moderate amount of in-game currency. I cannot support a company that does this to it's customers.
I also happen to believe that CCP devs should pull all of their characters off tranquility and be allowed to play only on the test server... but that's just me. (The temptation of corruption has obviously proven to be too great.)

It is striking how the concept is similar between Eve and that primitive game back then.

I can't believe that I once said SWG would be the last MMO I would ever play. It was..but only for the first 6 months until the Devs nerfed the hell out of it and then changed the game completed with the NGE crap. -------------------------------------------------- #1. hey hey
Circa 19**cough** My Brother got me into his ZX Spectrum with the really mind numbing 10 .. 20 . . 30 .. GOTO 10 etc. and we spent hrs typing for small boxes to travel accross the screen
A few yrs later Daley Thompsons Decathalon was the flavor of the month along side Jet Set Willy
fast forward more years and duck hunt and mario were amusing me all afternoon and the early hand helds arrive just in time for christmas then break and spill LCD all over by new years :)
Take a break a few more years and i obsess with tetris for the Uber GameBoy
Nintendos goes "super" and F-Zero gets friends and family into arguements and the fun really starts as multiplayers get introduced to gaming in a bigger way.
I finally graduate to beer and women so no more gaming for me till something spectacular happens . .. .
PLAYSTION \0/
Tekken/Soul Calibur and the Final Fantasy series (which also made an appearance on my gameboy many years before) some other RPG games and you guys might remember "secret of mana*" with this i learn to emerse myself into a story and complete a game rather than button bash.
I didnt really play PC games as 1) i was too young, 2) too poor 3) too drunk to figure them out.
I eventually got a PC and some various attempts at games of non description it gets dusty and unscrewed regularly. Then a mate bought round "baldurs gate : shadows amn and i was addicted forever.. BG became NWN but i couldnt get a decent PC or even afford one still :( I really wanted to get into gaming on the PC so i built a decent one of my own (i had a job like an adult finally) and everything run smoth as a babies proverbial.. I was too late for everquest and TBH RPG Online gaming wasnt anything i actually liked mainly cause the players can be, well, er.. U know. :))
a friend played EVE for about a year and kept trying to get me into it but i resisted. Another NEW PC build and i finally get something respectable to play on. I aquired some games, watched some game programs "sky one anyone ?" and then found Homeworld 2. OMG WOW And HOLY COW !!! it was exactly what i wanted in a game. Sexy graphics and superb gameplay. After noticing that EVE was pretty much a combination of Homeworld, Sim City, Alpha Centari and even the awesome colonization. I have never looked back since.
EVE is a great combination of styles. building up resources and or going out to pew pew or some combination of both. Its adult themes and dark humor suits me perfectly. its multi faceted approach to gaming is what makes it so outstanding
This year sees the PS3 attempt to retake its crown from microsoft and is tempting me away like beer and women did but without a doubt EVE is the PC winner. Even my recent aquisiton of C&C 3 didnt pull me away. I almost tried LOTRO but couldnt find a Downloadable Client or even a free trial period. Their site was crap and complicated to navigate and some links were out of date/broken. One Ring, Once chance. Sorry LOTRO u blew it with such a crappy launch.
*yes its a super nintendo game :)

Played Operation Flashpoint for a very long time. With a good squad it is still a lot of fun.
Sometime in Feb. 2004 when I was bored, I bought a gaming magazine that came with a dvd, it had EVE-online on it... EVE was my first MMO too! I have tried a few others now but somehow I don't manage to get rid of this addiction

I played mounds and mounds of 'NBA Live' since the '99 incarnation. '2000' was the best title and still is - loved the thing. Not hard when you love basketball. Also was a complete and utter 'Master of Orion' and 'Privateer' junkie. Loved anything that had a diplomacy or commercial aspect to it.
Along came EVE (unfortunately only discovered it at the very start of 2006). I don't play much else any more. Maybe some NBA Live or FIFA. _____________________________ Eldo spanked my sig but I can't be bothered changing it just now. |

I did however play a few other mmo's before going to WoW. Such as Dransik and Ragnarok. And it was basicly Rts and fps before that. ______________________________

So far EVE-ONLINE is both the best and worst in some respects. It is by far the most improved since 2004 compared to many of the others.

MMO Wise I believe was still stuck on Ragnarok Online when I found Eve. But I was also beta testing for Cabal and playing Phantasy Star Universe. Personally, when Ragnarok2 comes out I probably wont be on Eve very much for awhile. Eve is fun and all but, for me at least, it's the type of game I need to take a break from every now and then. Set a month long skill and not pay for a month.
Comparing Eve to RO is like comparing apples and oranges. Ragnarok was a point and click online rpg with little to no risk of loss and pvp ended up getting changed so I stopped. It got more free for all max levels pwning noobs fest. The game was beautiful, and the class advancment system was incredible. Moving from Swordsman, to Crusader, to Paladin. It was a tough one picking between RO and Eve.
Cabal, well, Cabal was perfect. A flawless pvp system that seperated duels from murders. YOu could either just murder someone, attack them unprovoked, and lose honor points and receive penalties on how NPCs looked at you, or you could challange the person. I was a beta tester on the first server, before they banned all the American testers. It was an awesome game, and the combat system felt more active then most point and click rpgs.
Finally theres PSU, Phantasy Star Universe. The long awaited sequel to PSO. Hands down, Eve is better. PSU was extremely fun, but they launched the game long before they finished it, so you could do everything available in a couple of months, So you had a couple of months of constant fun, made it to your third class, and then you would stop playing untill the next update came out. It'll be fun when they finish it.

What did I play 'Before Eve'? Hmm, long list...
Ultima Online, Everquest, Anarchy Online (till it turned into an Evercamp clone), Jumpgate (a little), Planetside, Matrix Online, Everquest 2, Star Wars Galaxies, City of Heros, Guild War (some), Auto Assault, 2nd Life (a little), and one I haven't seen mentioned here yet, the sadly gone Seed. Seed was never a good game technically, lousy coding... but the premise was sure wildly different from the 'usual'.

Wow was my first, and I still enjoy it, though with me getting kicked from any guild due to being away (I am a very casual gamer) It's getting hard to have fun, I love to heal and group up and help lowbies but it's pretty hard after they removed the global chat (whyyyy blizzard that was fun!)
Then I played a lot of second life, I wish I could play that more, but there are way to many people that take it terribly seriously there...Once my internet went down in an important conversation, and i get back on the next day and they've disowned me *sigh*
Then EVE came along, it was nice, but I joined my friend's corp - only people I knew, which suddenly went off to 0.0 leaving me behind, no way i could have been useful up there. so I flew around a bit and then Privateers landed on me, so I quit, came back a while later though, and it's much better now with all the new features, and lack of privateers :) Now i can go back to support again, my favourite playstyle, not something you can do on your own :P
Now i'm in a wonderful small corp and we do things very often, the fun is back in the game for me now and I'm addicted :)

Played planetside from release, my brother played EVE at the same time, whilst sponging off my planetside account I like to add! played planetside for over a year and a half, then came here for abit after leaving planetside, having seen my bro playing I played trial, enjoyed, played for 2 months then removed jsut before my GCSE's because I was concentrating more on the game then my work apparently :S went back to planetside, got bored and came back here! ran outta cash so went on a hiatus for 7 months and now Im back! soon to leave cos I cant afford subs still :P

Oh man, Fantome from MA ? So many JumpGate carebears here -_-
To contribute to the topic, for me it was : CounterStrike (Up to B 6.5) JumpGate Natural Selection
and now of course EvE, where I'm trying to be as tolerant towards the concept of not actually aiming at opponents as I can be :/

I would make a comeback, but my memory for internet spaceship politics from half a decade ago is a bit shoddy.
All I remember is aiming and shooting at dudes (and running, alot), and that was awesome. The rest is a haze.

Before this MMO I played CoH/CoV almost exclusively. However, that got old. I kind of like the slower pace of EVE personally. At least in this game you can dock in a station relatively quickly and not worry about getting ganked. Not to mention that this game looks a whole lot better on my computer then that did.

I first played counter strike then started playing css, tried the wow free trial found it to be abit slow. Went back to playing css then tried Eve, i was told about eve back in 2003 but was too young to grasp it then began playing Eve at the start of 2006.

Online games I started with Mechwars, planetarion and a little known game called nemesiswars.
Proper MMOs I started with Neocron and was playing up until the Neocron 2 expansion when the devs completly unbalanced the gameplay and the best parts of the community left leaving only juvenile muppets playing.
During that time I started playing Eve and have been on and off ever since.Gave planetside a try, was good for ****s and giggles but offered the same type of gameplay as UT but with a pricetag so I left that.
Beta tested Horizons.
Been playing WoW on and off since its release.

Edited by: Amarria Lightwielder on 07/05/2007 14:09:48 concerning MMO's. I first started playing Anarcy Online. Played that for a year +/-, then jumped onto star wars galaxies, really like that game, until it reached a certain point, + world of warcraft and planetside. I started playing eve in July 2003, and I did play some MMO's simultaneously as well. I did SWG for about a year, and wow for about 6 months. Not sure where they all overlapped. Planetside I play from time to time when I just want some brainless action, it's fun that way =) never really committed to it. I've always come back to eve =) even though I've had a few breaks when the game made me stop playing for a few months because I was without a cause. -

EQ was my first MMO, played that for a few years, then tried SWG but left it before JTLS came out, just couldn't get back into it, DAOC never liked it, EQ2 and WOW, though I like EQ2 much better then WOW, WOW just didn't seem to have as good content like EQ2. Tried Vangard for about 15 minutes. EVE may not be perfect, but I like it as a great sci-fi game. If I need a break from EVE, I tend to play EQ2. Nice topic. Vasers

WOW One day I logged on and I was kicked from my guild. I was informed it was because I ****** around in ZG too much. (The night before we did the fastest run of ZG we have ever completed.) It was probably because I called our guild leader a fat retard one too many times. Because, well, he was really fat.
Reactivated me EvE account a few days later.

Guild Wars WoW Planetside Saga of Ryzom NWN Americas Army Delta Force Series Battlefield Series Quake Doom
Ive played tons of FPS/MMO/RPG's
Still EVE isn't my only game, theres been times i've spent over ъ60 a month on subscriptions. As i find sticking to 1 game will multiply the chances of gettin bored an either never returning or wasting precious grind/training time. And even with all that I have an outside social life better than ever. Amazing what you can do in 9 hours work time, 6 hours play/social time :P
