Edited by: Skyphox on 22/05/2007 07:49:59 Replacing the new drivers with the old drivers did not work for me. Even turning sound off didn't fix it. Possible the newer drivers have installed something that just buggers up windows a little, or simply updating the drivers causes this issue and only a fresh install fixes it. Why I ended up going for a full reinstall.
It's quite possible that it's not the sound card i guess, but still, everyone with this issue so far seems to have a Sound Blaster card. And reinstalling windows was how i ended up fixing this issue.

it may possibly be the sound but its not just SB cards.I have a builtin realtec card and the exact same thing is happening to me,incredible frustrating.

Edited by: Lian To on 23/05/2007 05:14:25 I've been playing this game on and off since beta, and I've had this problem for as long as I can remember, and I've gone through several different upgrades since I first played.
My freezes only last for about half a second or something, though. It's exactly as if I opened the market interface. It seems to happen more frequently the longer I play, though that could just be my imagination. I haven't exactly kept a written record or anything.
It's mostly irritating when it happens just as I try to click something or adjust my view.

To be absolutely clear, this thread is about a regular stutter. One that ticks non-stop at a precise rate.
For everyone that doesn't have this behaviour, you are just living with Eve's normal bloated behaviour. Some call it lag, but whatever, it's just the way Eve is.
For those that do have the regular stutter, there is three common causes: - Sound driver compatibility (god knows why). - Aggressive virus scanner running in the background. - Windoze dualcore bug - patch available from M$ and is also applied via windoze update I think.

Grr, make that four common causes: - Thermal shutdown of the CPU being the fourth one.

Try disabling your soundcard from the device manager (right click my computer and select manage, then go to the "device manager" and "disable" your soundcard) at if it helps you know that it's somehow sound related. If it doesn't well, then it's something else =).
Just one easy way to check if it's sound related.
If you don't like what I say, just ignore it, or admit I got to you. |

Edited by: Buck Starchaser on 24/05/2007 06:26:28 I have this problem off and on... gets me really PO'ed until I happen to glance down and see that I accidently started yahoo messenger.... just having that thing on for a day or so causes it to fail and force your computer to pay attention to it in regular intervals even if it is showing 0% CPU usage in task mannager. I want to kick it's programmers in the nutz so hard they yodel like on the commercial!
Also leaving some websites (generally ones with active-x or other intrusive spam crap) open in Internet Explorer for longer than a few hours will cause it to leak out all your memory and then crash all your IE windows (so you can't open them). this will cause a simular problem but more often excessive hard disk grinding when doing something like undocking or jumping.
Either way, kill yahoo and keep an eye out for 'active content' web pages and that will stop or minimize your problem
Edit: Although it's less popular with infants and invalids I've found that MSN messenger doesn't have this enfuriating problem. The only problem is trying to get all your friends and family to make the switch.

I've known quite a few people who have had this problem, which was caused by being in the newbie help channel. IIRC it had something to do with updating the list of people in the channel. Anyways if you're having this problem and are in any of the big help channels, try closing them and seeing if that fixes it.

Edited by: Plutoinum on 24/05/2007 12:05:28 You could disable eve voice and try again.
To disable EVE voice, add the line 'voiceenabled=0' to the end of the file Cache\prefs.ini in your eve folder. If it solves it it's maybe time to file a bug report.
I had such a problem after the eve voice patch and since I've disabled it, it has been gone.
( But doesn't have to be the reason. A similar problem existed also once in EVE coldwar with Win98 due to incompatible coding to that OS. Was fixed later and now that OS isn't supported anymore. Don't know if all of you use vista, maybe there is a new issue with Vista. I still use XP )

Edited by: Chiggie on 25/05/2007 01:39:54 Ok sometimes I get the same thing, It's usually because I did something stupid, such as leaving a second logon window open. That's a HUGE lag on the system, and mine's a screamer too, but it will lag me out.

This used to happen to me. It progressively got worse. After quite a bit of frustration I finally tracked it down to my video card overheating.
I opened the case, stuck a box-fan blowing directly into my machine and never experianced this problem again.
May or may not be solution to your problem, just my experiance.

Could be a Vista compatability problem. I'm still on W2K (with AMD X2 4400 + 2G and nVidia 7900GTX :), and no problems at all.

jeez, you guys have been living the good life. For the last week or so, I have 15 sec of frozen screen TWICE per minute. Basicly, 15 sec frozen, 15 sec ok, 15 sec frozen, 15 sec ok, and so on. This usually happens about 5-8 minutes after logging on!
Cleaned up the cache folder. Re-installed drivers. (Have Soundblaster 2 Audigy) but sofar no good. Wish me luck!

Ah, I missed this detail. Looks like thermal shutdown. Check the CPU and GPU temperatures during the stuttering.
Btw: The 31% CPU usage is rubbish. Games always use 100% unless you've got framerate capped in some way. And in Eve this don't help much, it'll still use 100%.
As you can see on the temperatures, it is deffently not thermal shutdown. A CPU usage of 31% is not rubbish. if your EVE maximum requires x calculations pr. sec. , and your CPU can handle 100 times that...
For instance i have the following CPU loads in the following games
EVE 31% WOW 45% Flight Sim X 90%
My CPU is a quad core where all four cores are running @ 2.66

Im tempted to go with this. I never had this problem until I 'upgraded' to Vista. Its not just limited to Eve, but rather I think the problem lies with my cheap **** router not being 100% compatible with Vista/IP6.

Was that temperature taken during the stuttering? The GPU temp needs checked also it seems.

Doesn't work that way. The games uses all it can get on one processor - since they are single threaded. If there is more MIPS available then it runs at a higher framerate, if there is less then it runs at a lower framerate.

Maybe your setup only shows one loadmeter spread across all four virtual processors? Dunno, doesn't make much sense to display CPU that way.

My CPU info shows four graphs, one for each core. i took the reading from the core with most load on it. The other three cores are at 20 -> 28 % Load.
I'm running with two monitors, so yes temperatures and load are taken while playing EVE.
BTW: my framerate, ( CTRL + F ) in EVE are at 678 when docked, and 234 when flying thru space.
Temperature for the GPU is a little hard, but i have measured the air comming out from the wents, and it is 37 Degrees Celsius.

Except you have 'vsync on', in EVE that would be 'Interval 1'. Then the graphics engine is synchronized to the monitor refresh rate and rendering of a new picture can only start at some fixed times. Since rendering duration for an image is not constant, there are some times left, where the graphics engine can't do much and if the whole game is synchronized to that or there is nothing else left to compute immediately, the processor is returned to the system.
In general this leads to lower FPS and a hard FPS cap, but also lower cpu usage with vsynch on (e.g.interval 1). And with v-synch off you get high FPS, since those waiting times are missing, on a fast PC even more FPS than the monitor displays per second, but also high cpu usage.

It's not on by default and doesn't really help to turn it on in current games, as you have also pointed out. So, rendering to vsync is off.

Not your router, it's got it's own CPU. Network problems don't cause stutter. Not unless it's the driver puking on windoze or something similar, but that's very unlikely.

I get this as well. Game runs at 50 fps for about 10 seconds.. then drops to about 18 fps for about 25 seconds. then goes to 3-4 fps for about 10 seconds. than blam! fps skyrockets for 1 second, then it repeats the cycle.
This is a new problem for me however, just started last week or so i think. My sound has always been turned off. nothign else has changed on my computer.
any ideas? it this CCPs programming?

Definitely thermal shutdown! Clean your fans and heatsinks. And check the fans for smooth/easy rotation.

Did that solve your Jita login issue?
Login problems are usually because of internet packet loss. You should be doing ping checks when that happens.

alrighty folks. I had this problem. An exact stutter every 1 minute for 4 seconds. This occured continuously for 20 minutes(has happened since install, but i just started testing) until I closed the rookie help channel. I have now experienced not a single stutter for over 10 minutes.
