Edited by: Gaven Blands on 14/05/2007 13:23:47 Ok, so, let's face a simple fact. Some of us are nerds. In fact probably most of us. For those poor unfortunates who have not yet transcended to Geek levels, girls remain a mystery and a source of idolisation.
While for the Geeks, those who have tried girls and prefer computers / RC Helicopters / D&D etc thank you very much, girls have little value, the nerds disadvantage themselves by being susceptible to everything and anything a female says or does or asks for.
Now, I've been aware of a few "Girl Card" situations in my time. These are defined as:- "A person behind internet anonymity overtly claiming to be female to obtain goods, services or favours they couldn't get if they claimed to be male"
The most recent Girl Card I saw played was a harrassment petition. Now, you only need to have petitioned something once to know that GMs don't give a stuff. But, play the Girl Card, and you get a Petition To Warning time of less than five minutes.
This doesn't really give the Girl Card player much of an advantage though. What works in Eve is ISK. Now, my negotiator in corporate ransoms is actually female, and she plays the Girl Card like an expert. That comes with 28 years of practice. So far, the Girl Card has netted our enterprise over 300 million isk. While playing without the Girl Card has netted more like 20 million isk.
Now, 300 million is not going to put a hole in the male's pocket is it? We're strictly small time, this isn't an e-peen thread.
Quite the opposite, this is an e-vag thread.
So what I am interested in is, does anybody have a truely classical "Girl Card" moment? Whether or not the player of the card was really female. Sure I love to hear about GM's being suckered in, but such stories cannot place a definitive ISK value on the Girl Card.
I'd like to know, do you own a Tech Two Girl Card, and are you a billionare?
What is the ISK value of the Girl Card?

The Girl Card is extremely effective.
If you play WoW, do not play as a male, ever. Only play as a female. And remember, obviously, you are a hot 18-year-old chick IRL.

Well obviously when asked, she claims she looks good.

But seriously i think we've all tried it at some point on a random MMO freetrial whereby you run around as a hawt female char and try to make cash its good for a laugh but i never pay out on them anymore ^^
I did however manage to accidentally insult a female alliance member while i was drunk on TS the other day >.< ---------

Be impressed!
Originally by: virtual-economy.org What are the user demographics like? Based on what I see in the chat channels, my impression is that the users are a bit older than in your normal fantasy MMORPG?
Magn·s: That's probably right, the average age is about 27 years old. 95% of the users are male and 5% women. Most of them have an education and some kind of a degree. Their average EVE playtime per week is 17 hours.
Source.
Some areas of the game are probably more skewed than that, though.

Edited by: Gealbhan on 14/05/2007 15:38:55 Everyone knows why some guys play female chars, sometimes it about the money or items they get and sometimes it's not.
It's about acceptance, getting the attention they wouldn't get otherwise if they were just being themselves. So you make a female character under the guise of a "Girl Card" or whatever but the real reason is you're just looking for attention, trying to find some kind of social welcoming and maybe for a short time not feel like such an outcast.
Edit: I better make it clear the above is in general and not aimed at the OP in particular or it may be construed as a flame, which it isn't.

I attacked some guy in the same system as 30 other guys in my alliance and 1 guy backed me up.
The next day some chick got ganked in her Myrmidon there was a gang of 12 people travelling 15 jumps to probe down her attacker.
Also the "little kid" card
Somebody on help channel was like "my daddy gave me this game for my birthday but I got no money for a ship" and I gave him 1 mil. Figured meh its just a little kid and its fake pixel money anyway, let him have fun, in RL you might give a little kid a piece of candy, why not in-game.

What girl card...hasn't worked for me in all the time i've played this game!
When i play a female character in a MMO, it's for two reasons. One is roleplay aspect, when you want to play a female character to play a female character. Not really understood by non RP crew. Actually love turning down stuff because i'm a "girl". "What? You throw a couple of gold at me and think i'm yours!?"
And the other is simple:
If i have the choice of watching a pair of bouncing boobs instead of a hairy dwarves butt while i play for several hours a day, the wobbly jubblies win every time.

As for myself... yeah virtual skirt . I usually play female in rpgs/eve/whatnot for a couple of reasons. First "my" usual online name is typically taken, and it feels wrong to use another one. And second.. I usually can't find a male portrait/skin/model I like. By picking a female character I don't feel it's *me* so much, so I'm less fussed with the appearance.

Long ago after I first figured out how the whole MMO thing worked, I just decided it would be a lot easier and less time consuming for me to just treat everyone the same, regardless of gender, and not give a damn.
It's worked great over the years for the most part. Unfortunately you run into a lot of the "females" that don't appreciate it, and want special attention and rewards for their supposed gender, but you also sometimes get the ones that are just thankful for a group that isn't going to talk down to them or coddle them for their gender.
Also, my personal rule is to only refer to people by their ingame gender and character name. I don't care if you sound like gravelly voiced bubba on teamspeak, if your name is barbie ingame that's what I'll call you, and I'll use the female pronoun in reference to you.

1 resulted in a face to face meeting with plenty of sex.
2 resulted in webcam shows for my eyes only.

Read my bio ingame sometime.
Starcontrol 2 hasn't left my computer since it came out.
Always in some folder, stashed away. When the 3do came out, was flabercasted. Even made a mix for the starbase commander, but, it wasn't that good.
No matter how often(every now and then) you go through it, it's still the same game, same goodness all around.
Bring out Starcontrol Online!
So far i just fit my ships and name 'em accordingly...EVE is a great semi-SC aid.

I have decided to use a male avatar and name specifically because every time I play as a real woman with a female in game persona I always get bothered by men in the game.
So gif me ISK now !1111!! you sexy sexy men.
I am a bird honest!
More seriously ...
Men with a male avatar = 80% Men with a female avatar = 19.999% Women with a female avatar = 0.00001% Women with a male avatar = none whatsoever?

When i play a female character in a MMO, it's for two reasons. One is roleplay aspect, when you want to play a female character to play a female character. Not really understood by non RP crew. Actually love turning down stuff because i'm a "girl". "What? You throw a couple of gold at me and think i'm yours!?"
And the other is simple:
If i have the choice of watching a pair of bouncing boobs instead of a hairy dwarves butt while i play for several hours a day, the wobbly jubblies win every time.
Off topic--but your sig--Star Control II ftw!
have you seen The Ur-Quan Masters ? SC2 in a window - superb for gate camps / mining etc etc.

In short:
Toys for Bob chose not to do an SC3 because Accolade got greedy. They expected number 3 to be done with the same money as was required to finish number 2 - the same amount of money that had left the developer unpaid for 6 months.
So Accolade got Legend to do it. Result? "Less humour, overly grey atmosphere bad characterisation and design, poorly crafted plot and many others." Also, the addition of instantaneous warp travel left travelling to other systems a bit... sterile.
[EDIT] It appears posting with this character earlier borked my settings a little.

And in an offline game? Elder Scrolls offers the same option. Virtua Fighter lets you choose female fighters. Tomb Raider forces you to play as a woman. Even 3D Ant Attack gave you a choice: Boy or Girl?
What do you have to say about the people who choose to play the woman in those games.

If I'd only mentioned TR I'd agree with you. But 3D Ant Attack's selling point was the isometric viewpoint that developer Sandy White pioneered - ZX game, y'see. As for VF I don't see how the inclusion of female characters by that point was a mere marketing tool. Unless you find metallic cyborgs using the body of a ninja's mother kinky.
I myself have come from Guild Wars, and I have always played male characters in that game. Still do. Excluding the one point where I decided to make an 'accountant' character for my guild. I made a Female Mesmer. Bizarrely, I didn't have to do anything different - not even try to act like a girl - to fool someone, which was purely unintentional. Of course when I was forced to point out that I was a guy... the reaction was... "that's sad."
And I have no idea why I made this Alt a Jin-Mei woman either.

Same here. Although I do tend to enjoy looking at female backsides more then male ones. So I do have some female avatars where that is what you're staring at most of the time.

Its pretty easy to tell the guys from the girls when it comes to female characters.
EG, if they are overtly trying to be female they are male.
Most female gamers I have talked to use unisex names in games where you have no face (FPS' and such) and generally female but not the 'female half elf' type in other games.
If you try to use the girl card on me you get nothing, the only person who gets me with that is my GF :/

I generally do the same, though I find that some of the same people who insist on female equality get ****ed off when you treat a woman the same as you treat a man.
For my part, I bought into the whole female equality thing when I was younger, so I generally don't treat female acquaintances or strangers any differently than I would a man - I don't expect anything special from them, and they shouldn't expect special treatment from me in return.
That said, an interesting little incident occurred about a week ago that reminded once again that a double standard still exists--one that usually favors the female. Basically, I was out NPCing in 0.0 with a PvP-fit nighthawk when I ran across a neutral raven. I tried to report it twice on TS, but the lady who was speaking just kept talking over me both times. At that point, I just said what I'd say to anyone who kept talking about carebear stuff when I was trying to report intel on enemy combatants: I told her to shut up. I was booted off TS almost instantly by an irate male admin who seemed to feel that women need some sort of special protection, despite the fact that there was a hostile in the area and I was engaging it at the time.
In real life, I still see the same double standard being applied in the court system, where it often seems that the female is presumed to be the victim and the male the criminal. I'm not saying we (men) aren't often the ones at fault, but the whole "innocent until proven guilty in a court of law" thing often gets thrown out the window when it's male vs. female.

I lol'ed.
I usually play both, males and females. But don't think that it makes such a big difference in EVE. Had some interesting conversations in Neocron though and some people have been still wondering after half a year, if I was really a girl. Then came teamspeak.
Now I'm playing a bit City of Villains trial. With my 3rd char I've picked a deadly combo that opens you all doors: A female nice looking corruptor/healer with x-ray attacks. 2 hours after making that char I got already a serious guild invite from some higher level players of a mostly-girl-chars guild.
My name there is X-Barbie with pink and blue clothes. They said they wanted Barbie in their team and healers are much desired. So they boosted me up and took me into the higher level missions. Need to laugh, when I just think about it. I wasn't really serious, when I made that char, but now I love her. If you come online, it's like 'hey barbie !'...gang invite.

Playing a female gets you more attention in most games, depending on the age demographic. I used to play FFXI, and all my mules were females. One time I was passing out a Linkpearl to one of my friends from one of my mules, because she was closer to his area. The mule was the least played, yet sexiest class in the game, a female elvaan. So, after I pass the pearl to my buddy, some level 5 noob starts following me around, telling me how sexy i am and doing general teenager boy stuff. Instead of saying that I was a male in real life, and that we couldn't play together because that was just my mule, I told him my high level boyfriend would kill him if he didn't leave me alone. He kept harrassing my poor "girlfriend" so I got on my main, and told him not to bother her anymore. Then he started to follow my main around, and tried to annoy me more. So... I just walked to an area with monsters that could kill him, and watched him die. It was funny. Never get popped again!

I never played the girl card myself to any great degree with any real success, but this thread reminds me a something that happened many years ago in another game.
Long before wow, eq, any of that, i played ultima online. Right after housing opened up in trammel(the then new non-pvp lands) Some enterprising souls dropped down a large l-shaped and opened up a cyber sex bordello. They had bouncers working the door, hot chicks in sexy leather in every room inside this thing. Couldnt beleive it when i heard about it, so we rolled up there to have a peep.
Sure enough, there was a long line of frustrated kids in a line outside this place, paying their gold at the door. And yes, the propriators were all the alts of guys, actually a whole pvp guild!! LMAO That lasted about 3 days before the GM's got wind of it and broke out the ban sticks.
Was the funniest thing i ever saw back in the day, well almost.
Prior to UO i had played a game called legends of kesmai on the gamestorm servers. In LOK, you had different charactor classes, including thieves. Thieves had the ability to train a skill that made you totally invisible, even while moving. With high enough skills, you couldnt be revealed by anything ingame.
The gm's their had multiple roles including role playing charactors that ran events. One in particular was known for being sort of a party boy in game, like in charactor, if yah brought him ale, he would use his powers to do many things, spawn some critters, change you into this or that, etc. I ran a large guild there, biggest in game, in our chat room i got word that a certain GM's event toon was in a semi-secret area of the game along with a well known "female", the top martial artist charactor in game, which most everyone else in game happened to dislike, ok, hated.
Turns out one of my roques busted them having cyber in this place thinking they were all alone, for special favors to the MA. A few of us hopped onto our thieves, sneaked on in there past the mobs, and watched this "interesting" conversation taking place for about 15 minutes. Screen shots were made, and the whole bloody mess hit the games boards. GM got canned, the MA got banned, and it turned out the female MA was actually a guy playing the girl card, and had been recieving special favor with gear and skills for a very long time, as "she" was the top MA on the boards for a almost 2 years. ( the game had a ladder) Now i dont know or cant relate in isk or gold which was currency in that game to "max" playing of the girl card, but i know i sparred with guildmates 8 to 10 hours a day at times chasing that MA on the ladder with skill and level with my ninja wizzy for almost 2 years and i always bounced between number 2 and number 3 ranked player in that game the whole time, and while i was always busy skillin, that MA seemed to never spar up and was always out hunting, and was always just out of my reach every month in the rankings. But after "she" got hit with the ban stick, i did enjoy being the number one ranked player in the whole game for a few months, until EA bought gamestorm and killed LOK that is.
Two years of my life in that game must count for something i spose, and is the biggest play i know of the girl card in a game that i'm aware of so far.
Footnote: Even though that event in LOK took place about 15 years ago, somewhere here i have a box full of all the broken mouse's i went through sparring like a maniac to catch that "chic". I keep it to remind me that after all, this game or any other is simply just that, just a game. My power gamer days are long gone, and when the scammers and corruption, game changes or lag get us all down, hey, it's just a game!

Not because people are "utteraly scared of girls" as you would put it.
They, in my experience, call you "he", the majority of the time, just to **** you off. EVE.. not the friendliest place in the universe.
As for the girl card.. I often times endeavor to minimize it's effects. Like when I used to have a certain pair of pictures up in my bio, I replaced them with my more subtle and innocent faced one when I went into a longterm public merchantile position of GTCs sales and occassionally various reselling investments etc. My business success has primarily been due to ethics, reliability, dedication, and courteous nature with my clients. Though there are still a few clients that supposedly bring their business to me on the basis of being smitten. Which is okies sometimes, because I earn that affection.
Here and there through out my MMO life I've received gifts from friends and partners, but I try and recipricate them evenly whenever possible, even to the point where I kept very specific tallies and rates for services offered lol I was a very naughteh snakehead alien (What're they called again?) gurl named Esani Mu'Epi, all up in the SWG cantinas :) That's when I was coming out of my shell and exploring my sentuality in a safe medium. Which is one of the reasons why I prize the internet and potential relationships made through it. It gives me plenty of time and potential mental stimulation when pursuing partners and determining compatability and viability for the longterm. It's truely the largest factor in how I've managed to mantain my hardfought virginity to this age (27, 28 in October) Without being a prude.
EVE experiences specifically.. biggest Gurl Card Event.. This one's hard because EVE is an extremely hostile environment, especially towards females, and it's the boy's faults for their fascination with not playing their own gender, but yaddi yaddi yadda, some reasons are legitimate albiet.. assanine. There have been times where I've played male characters to escape it all. Back to EVE. It's my contention that it is never "more" productive to be/be thought of as, a female in EVE, because the high population density of wanna-be-pirates is directly proportional to the homosmexuality in the community I digress & joke (Barely) so back to Gurl Card + EVE. The closest things mentionable, and recallable, aren't admissable as they stem from deep and strong established relationships here with a select few gentlemen in the community. Jared, Gudni, Alex, n' Andrew - Heyas bay-behz Closest typical thing would be occassionally getting random assistance in defense against rambling trolls, but defense on part of my gender only yields more trolling so it ends up having a reverse effect. So still, it's very hard pinning down an even in EVE that's truely been beneficial to be female. EVE just isn't built to attract females generally. We're social creatures and up until 2008, EVE has had zero prospects for character interaction.
Sooo yeah, I'm having a hard time pinpointing a good memory regarding being a female player in EVE. It's pretty much been harassment and trolling to the point where I've been unsubscribed several times I wouldn't be playing EVE now if it weren't for the fact that I have tens of billions in Game Time Codes.

A while ago I was trying to come up with an low effort way to make isk off the depravity of others, it occurred to me while chatting on ts that a form of the "girl card" could be used...
The idea was simple: statistically, out of all the people playing eve, there must be a percentage of pervs and sex-starved young'uns, and since eve's a mmorpg, it's probably pretty high...
Step one: find a couple of inebriated guys on ts with few inhibitions and a proclivity for the wierder side of sexuality...i.e. scandinavians, danes and the dutch Step two: create a trial account, stick a gtc on it and create 3 buxom female characters.
Step three: give the people mentioned above access to the characters and get them to roleplay as women.
Step four: pimp them out
While the plan was moderately successful, the pimping side of things required a little too much work and made me feel kind of dirty inside...
I am however proud of the fact that for a short while I was a digital pimp of what where, in effect, transvestites.
[btw if anyone reading this used the service in question....I hope you now feel worryingly confused about your sexuality you moral degenerate!]

My first paragraph specifically addresses that hun. I choose what I considered to be my least provactive picture out of my vast portfolio (College photography), in fact the one in question was just taken with a normal disposable camera, and on a near daily basis I get glowing compliments which have pleasantly surprised me and bosltered my self confidence. Like I said, it was supposed to be my humblest piccy but it's been well received. Most say it's muh eyes

I worked on voice changing software for a company that provides premium rate chat services. It makes me smile to think of all those sad men getting off listening to men pretending to be hawt chicks.
I've never understood the point of these chat lines. Phone me up and I'll swear at you without asking for your credit card details first!

well, just the pic itself would be considered playing the gender card. at least imo. guess i just have a low outlook on the online community... but then again, more power to ya
(note - i dont reproach you nor see it negatively.. you just happen to be the first person i thought of [feel special ] tho i've seen the gender card played at different time of my EVE life.)

*Nods @ Meeli* My approach to the internetz is using it as a socialization tool, not as a means to hide myself away. Protect myself perhaps, but most defiantely not to wall myself off from society. I socialize and reach out further through this communication medium, that's why my picture's up. So people know me, & it even helps with business some on the basis of accountability. Anonimity is abused endlessly by trolls and scammers. I wouldn't be such a public face if I we're "about that" or what-ev. So, yeah, that's my reasoning behind sharing myself publicly. I believe the internet is a communication tool. The vast majority one meets tend to be antisocial though unfortunately, so there's always backlash

If you play WoW, do not play as a male, ever. Only play as a female. And remember, obviously, you are a hot 18-year-old chick IRL.
(Rule 1 of the internet: if she's hot, doesn't have a mic, and doesn't have a camera, its a guy)
Lol, these topics come up every month or so...
The whole "pics" thing is pretty ******** though. It is possible that girls can't be bothered to get a camera and take pictures of themselves to please every guy that asks though. Then if you do and you **** them off they pass it round their mates and laugh about how you (suddenly) look like a horse-faced hairy-arsed *******
Rule 1 of the internet if you're female: Don't put pics on the net, you don't know where they'll end up
As a RL female having played MMOs for some years, I would never send pictures, and I don't use TS for other reasons (traumatized by having worked in a call center ).
Someone who would insist on this would just seem creepy to me. Then again, most females I have known IG don't feel the need to play a girl card anyway.
As far as girls playing male avatars, there are a few, I used to run a guild and especially teenagers who have parents and/or siblings playing, who know what does go on even if its just casual joking, often chose male avatars to avoid the harassement people here talk about.
There will always be the occasional RL bimbo also in online games, but in my experience, what someone else said before here is true - people who feel the need to play the girl card or insist on them being treated differently are male
And to go back to the demand for a picture - real life girls mostly refuse by reflex, while a male player pretending to be female will just send you a snapshot of a random girl

Back in my UO days... wait,,, I still have my UO account... anwho.... about 8-ish years ago I figured I would experiment with this 'girl card' phenomena. I set up an account with a female character named Oswold ('she' is still semi-active on LS if you see her, say hi). I gave her a guy name thinking that anybody who thought she might not have a female operator would then think what guy would give his female character a male name. Common sense would dictate that a guy would give a female character a female name to further propagate the illusion. Soooo... a woman would be the only one secure enough to give her female character an obviously male name.
Ok,, that was a horrible read,, sorry about that,, long story short...
I made a LOT of gold bopping around the bank basically begging for cash.
LOT of gold.... and Jewelry... oddly enough.

Umh, you don't understand my superior english? Let's try again:
"My friend found his current girlfriend from EVE ... and now they both run after fairies in never-land names Azeroth"
"to be honest it makes me wonder about the mental state of a person who would join a corp called Space Perverts and Forum warriors"
