Funny how I've always gone thru even considering myself as the sole pilot and I guess the only "crew member" of my ship. It would be cool if the player somehow was made aware of all the live's he/she takes into pvp.

The number of people queuing up to crew on a capsule pilotted vessel is vast, the numbers are such that they're by nature a disposable commodity. Read the Hands of a Killer in the Chronicles for an example.
It's also an interesting argument against allowing crews to be upgraded - a pod-pilot has their pick of the absolute cream of starship crews, everyone wants to work on a capsule fitted ship - there just isn't much room for improvement in these "best of the best" crews. --

It's been said over and over and over again since Eve went mainstream:
Crew sizes are approximate only and not fixed. It's the choice of the pilot how many flesh & blood biologics they use to manage ship systems, or how much they devote to robotic management. -

If you read the background info most of the ships have been in production for a long time. At the start of the creation of EVE about a year before that(lore wise) ships were converted to pod pilot ships.

Now I can understand if people want to work on my L4 CNR, but, backstory or not, I seriously doubt that there is a long queue of top-notch personnell wanting to work on a disposable 0.0 fleet battleship :P -

The Cadari cruiser Moa, for example, is larger than today's nuclear powered aircraft carrier, yet its crew size is only a fraction of today's carrier's (USS Nimitz has a crew size of appx. 4000). These ships probably had a much larger crew size before they start using the POD.

I'm not a biggot so tbh i don't care what race my crew is as long as they do their jobs it's fine by me, if they have a problem about shooting their countrymen they can always quit.
what is the big question is.. do crew have clones? and if not, why would one want to serve on a warship thats prolly gonna get blown up? For the Amarr i can understand, they prolly use lots of slaves addicted to Vitox but the other races? Caldari? perhaps the honor of dying in battle? (sounds a bit too much like klingon to me hehe) Minmatar.. chance to take a potshot at their former amarrian masters? there willing to die for that? but Gallente? were quite the peaceloving race... why would my fellow countrymen risk their precious lives?

If you figure that each world in EVE can support as many as our planet can, and then find out the number of habitable planets in the EVE galaxy...that's easy hundreds of trillions (what's the number above trillion?) of people. If even a fraction of those are willing to serve on a combat ship, that's an amazing number of people available. The real question is, anyone got a good estimate on how many crewmembers die in a given day's combat?
It might not be nearly as many as the available pool, but over the course of EVE's history, the loss of life might be enough to depopulate the EVE galaxy. - - -

Nope, imo, you are the sole pilot in a ship.
Heres how it works I think, all the regular pilots and ships are used with their standart crew number, but those advanced potential capsuleer pilots have their ships wiped out of all life-supporting mechanisms and the whole interior modified to house the pod system. You can see here how the pod systems look like:
Picture of pod system
Link to the backstory article
So, according to this, your whole ship as a capsuleer pilot rigged down to support your pod and your brain system that is intergated into pod and your ship.
In fact, if each ship in EVE universe would have crew and each crew member would have clone, cloning industry would overhelm itself at first early stages of this, imgine yourself amount of crews geeting shot down every day, the universe would be filled with their 'last memory shots' more then it would be filled with ships itself. That would create some sort of difficulties since such vast amount of data(and wer assuming there are tens of billions of human-like organisms in EVE universe) would overload anything that would try to route and calculate it.
So Id assume that those who can survive clone procedure are the capsuleer pilots, while regular pilots of factions/navy`s are still risking with their lifes ---

It depends on if you're refering to long scale or short scale logic.
Since bi refers to 2 and tri refers to 3, the logic in the names is:
short scale: Billion is thousand times thousand 2 = 10^9. Trillion is thousand times thousand 3 = 10^12. To get from one named order of magnitude to the next, multiply by a thousand. long scale: Million is million^1 = 10^6. Billion is million^2 = 10^12. Trillion is million^3 = 10^18. To get from one named order of magnitude to the next, multiply by a million.
These are the names of the large numbers, in ascending order (in short scale, most common)
million, billion, trillion, quadrillion, quintillion, sextillion, septillion, octillion, nonillion, decillion, undecillion, duodecillion, tredecillion, quattuordecillion, quindecillion (quinquadecillion), sexdecillion (sedecillion), septendecillion, octodecillion, novemdecillion (novendecillion), vigintillion, googol, centillion, googolplex
They ascend by 3 zeros (obviously) so one trillion = 1,000,000,000,000 while one quadrillion = 1,000,000,000,000,000
The question is, Is the birth rate high enough to offset the "unnatural" loss of life added to the "natural" death rate? Natural death could be anything from cancer to accidents to "Acts of God". A contributing factor to this loss of life depends heavily on the quality of life, and this will vary from planet to planet, system to system, region to region, and so on and so forth. Since there is no scientific way to quantify that variable in particular, given that planets in this game are totally static, we could never calculate whether or not the loss of life from EVE combat is enough to deplete the galaxies population. Plus, I am sure there are societal differences that affect birth rate. For example, the Gallentians would be much more likely to have a higher birth rate due to their free and open society than, say, the Amarr, who most likely shun sexual encounters.
My Theory = Clones. All crewmembers serving on your ship are clones and therefore totally expendable. When you buy a new ship, it comes with a brand new compliment of cloned crewmembers, complete with fully programmed intelligences that have weeded out such annoying human traits as "WANTS" and "DESIRES". Therefore, no mutiny, no insurrection, just complete obedience to the God of the Ship, YOU.

AAargh.. not this gain.
It's been in the official chronicles. There's been at least two chronicles in EON that specifically mention crew on a capsuleer ship.
There's even been a Dev on these forums saying that capsuleer ships have pilots.
Our ships have pilots. And yes, most of these die when our ships go boom. No, they don't have clones. Yes, they have escape pods, but still die most of the time.
There's no arguing about it. Capsuleer ships have crew. And lots of it. One EON chronicle mentions the team responsible for targeting in a Scorpion is 20 people. And that's just targeting.

This isn't it either.
There's a chronicle in EON (can't remember the exact issue) which mentions a crewmember that's just signed on to a Arbitrator, to get the huge life insurance, to get his terminally ill daughter proper medical treatment. He's very much not a clone, and neither are the Caldari and Minmatar crewmembers he drowns his sorrows in.
The thing is, 1 isk might be **** all to us, but to a average person, it might be the RL equivalivent of hundreds of thousands of dollars. ------------------------- Sigs are for noobs. |

The back story provide no evidence that you're the sole soul on the whole ship.
The people from CCP have said again and again there are crews on larger-than-frigate ships.
Even for the best POD pilot, it is just not possible for him to manage capital ships such as a mothership or even an carrier. A large ship is a complex war machine, merely able to make maneuvers and firing weapons and activate few modules (which are all the POD pilot can do) won't do for a large ship. Theoretically it is possible for nano-robots to handle all the maintainece and other miscellaneous tasks on a ship. However, from all the short stories and article I've read, the races are pretty advanced but not THAT technologically advanced. And to have a crew may be just the most cost-efficient choice.

those pictures are indeed from the very beginning of eve.
Might be fun tho to have crews as part of the ship basis.
like
Propulsion (slot) Electronics (slot) Shields (slot) Armor (slot) Guns (slot)
And you can put one crew member to each of those. Then there would be various types of crew memebrs youcan put in to those. And some more special and even rare crew units. Say expert electornics crew +10% to signature analysis. etc.etc

A few facts from the prime fiction.
Pod pilots are the only humans that can reliably use clone to escape death as the proces fries the brain and as such the proces has to only ever happen when the person is a few moments from certain death (pod is breached). The pod is the only thing that so far has proved to guarentee that this is the case.
The pod pilot replaces the entire command bridge of a ship taking away the lenghty proces of passing orders down the chain of command. The ships piloted by pod pilots are also rigged to further make use of the special abilities of the system further reducing the needed crew. This optimisation enables frigates to be flown by the pod pilot alone. Anything larger then a frigate needs more crew though, numbering the thousands when we reach battleships and God know's how many on a dread/carrier.

Crew don't get pods.
Crews certainly don't get PODs, only few elite POD pilot like us have them. But there are escape boats on ships. Even today's warships have life boats on them, I don't say why EVE ship don't have any lifesaving escaping devices for the crew.

Yes, even the smallest frigate in EVE is larger than a Boeing 747-400 jet, an average cruiser in EVE is bigger than any ship we've ever built in real life, and a Titan is as long as the entire Manhattan Island of NYC. The next release of EVE would show pilot physically walk to their ship which would help us get a grasp of their sheer size.

/me sighs...
I feel compelled to post this every time I see a poster who who refuse to accept that our ships have many people onboard... Here we go:
FFS SHIPS HAVE CREWS!!!! - As told by CCP GINGER of the EVE DEV TEAM
Also Read some EVE Chronicles.
And this short story has a nice section on the fourth page in that tells about how the pod works in a ship:
Originally by: Forsaken Ruins Mattias focused the drone cameras on the Blackbird, inspecting the massive gashes in its hull. Judging from the metallic carnage, he estimated that sections of at least 6 decks were now exposed directly to space. Somewhere beneath where he was sitting, hundreds of crewmembers were sealing off compartments, fighting electrical fires and desperately struggling to keep his ship's vital systems functioning. How many of them died because of this, he wondered. As the captain of the ship, he was sealed inside a pod made of an ultra-strong, Jovian-manufactured alloy and neurologically connected to the Blackbird's systems. Inside of it, so long as the ship was intact, the captain was immune from harm. It was the Jovians who had introduced this remarkable innovation, and it had changed the face of naval warfare forever.
...
Modern day starships are massive and incomprehensibly complex. Before the pod, there were so many points of failure between a captain's decision and the execution of his orders. The ability to create a direct neurological connection between a human mind and a ship's systems reduced those points of failure to zero. Commanding a starship was now a natural extension of the mind's will. All a captain needed was to just think about what he wanted his ship to do, and it was done.
To Mattias, it was all so impersonal. Because of the technology, a captain could skipper numerous ships over the course of a lifetime without ever meeting a single crewmember from any of them. Mattias was one of the few who made an effort to meet at least some. It seemed like the least he could do in exchange for their unquestioning faith in his abilities, and their trust in him to keep them alive.
And yes, everytime you lose a ship hundreds, if not thousands, of people die (and none of them have a clone, they are just regular Joes and not elite pod pilots like you and me.)
All you guys who believe the "No-crew-because-I-use-robotics/drones/mental powers/fedos" really need to give in and accept that we have crews.

Cloning is for the elite and relatively rich - aka- pod pilots :D Now consider that each planet has billions of people, all wanting to make a living - if you ask me the cost of materials for ships and insurance includes the salary of our crew. Personally i use 'ruthless' an eve online novella as a pricing base for the average bloke. with drug slingers making acouple thousand isk per major trade

Edited by: Pottsey on 01/08/2007 09:27:17 Edited by: Pottsey on 01/08/2007 09:26:24 There was a good background story in Eon about Ship crews. In short 95% of them die when a ship exploding acording to the paper work. In reality most of them survive in a long list of ways, get life insurance then go and work no another ship.
Some survive in space suits until savagers turn up, others use escape pods e.c.t
ôPod pilots are the only humans that can reliably use clone to escape death as the proces fries the brain and as such the proces has to only ever happen when the person is a few moments from certain death (pod is breached). The pod is the only thing that so far has proved to guarentee that this is the case.ö ThatÆs the old background story. Technology has moved on Pod pilots donÆt need to be in a pod anymore to get cloned and they donÆt have to die in the processÆs. Jump clones for example let you jump between bodys.
Some famous and rich people also have clones so its not just pod pilots.

A ship that is piloted normally requires a much larger crew than a ship piloted by one of the legendary pod-pilots (us). ---

Well I always saw it like this; your skills determine how well you can give orders to your crew, too keep everything nice and optimal. If you know what is important about a certain system you make your crew buff it up a bit above optimal. Hence the small increase in effectiveness.

Ah I loved those schematic-type diagrams of the ships when I first joined, shame they didn't keep them and update them with the new ships. Heh, plus they almost have sensible masses for the Battleships too (>2 million tonnes)... ----------
