Do you shoot, scoot and repeat, or do you take the time to loot and salvage?
I find looting and salvaging is often good for ISK, but sooo dull and also so dependant on what faction you are fighting, that I'm thinking of changing into a shooter and scooter.

I loot and salvage. You can easily make as much again on the salvage as you do in bounties.
Plus you can stock an entire corporation on t1 and medium t1 named loot for PvP for it...or reprocess. I reprocess and keep the mins, then I'll build another raven.

I loot and salvage, and take that into account when I'm planning my "eVe sessions" ... since I've only got a couple of hours of game time every other day, every bit of ISK is useful for me ...

I shoot, loot, salvage and then hunt around for anything anyone may have dropped. Most loot is refined and is very helpful offsetting the high prices of basic minerals for my manufacturing, it also means I very rarly have to buy high ends either.

I do a mix, and it depends on my mood. If I had the time to train the skill..I'd probably slap a salvager onto my Raven. Since I am using a CNR, I can EITHER fit a tractor OR a salvager, which kind of answers that equation.
No, I don't come back in a salvager/looter ship. Not enough playtime atm. I do however always ask in local in case anyone feel like looting/salvaging:)

I've found salvaging to be absolutely worth it, under a few conditions:
1. The mission is no more than 1 jump out. If you use a dedicated salvager (which you should) then making two roundtrips needs to take as little time as possible.
2. There are more than 5-10 spawns to loot. Anything less than ten, really, isn't worth the time.
3. Having a buddy come along in a salvager. Generally it's polite to then split the profits, but if they salvage while you are blowing things up, it adds almost no time to how long you're out there and adds a few million isk to each mission you do.
Otherwise, shoot n' scoot. For instance, there's a lvl 3 called "Break Their Will" where you have to blow up a repair station. It spawns a bunch of frigates and a few cruisers when you do, but it takes too long to sit there and kill everything. Blow the mission objective, return to base, get new mission. However, if you pull "The Blockade" or one of the extravaganzas, salvage the cr4p out of those and you won't be sorry.

I shoot, loot, salvage - and depending on my mood and Ore in the area - I mine.
Ran a lvl 4 mission the other day - and was suppose to complete it in less than 6 hours to 1.5M bonus. Thanks to have a friend along I did it in less than hour, salvaged the whole mission went back and mined it up to 5 hours and 55 mins. Got 1.5M for Bonus, over 2 mil for mining, and over a mil for the stuff I did put on market or reprocessed and put on market as minerals.

Edited by: Magius Paulus on 17/05/2007 17:10:31 I only loot and salvage the following missions (ONLY BS though): Any drone mission: Loot & Salvage (why else bother?) Going Beserk: Loot, DON'T Salvage!!! Any faction opponent: Loot the tags Pirate Invasion: Loot (but a lot of empty wrecks) and definitely salvage; have an average of 12 mln here. The Blockade: Loot and salvage.
EDIT: Since i use a dedicated salvager, i tend to be very selective on my loot. It has little use to loot all those Cap 800 charges...

I loot and salvage. I have actually been keeping track by spreadsheet the breakdown of values and this is what I have so far:
15 LVL 4 missions (Varying quality) Republic Fleet Security Division
Averages:
100 mil bounties + rewards 100 mil salvage components 55 mil named components for sale 140 mil reprocessed loot minerals 90k LP
Now while it may appear that loot and salvage is worth about double the missions them selves you have to remember a fair quantity of the minerals come from drone missions with no bounties. Even still the numbers are impressive enough that I will always salvage and loot, which takes a maximum of 30 minutes if you are in a salvage destroyer.
Draw your own conclusions from this.

I do most of my missions solo. Only up to level 3's
I usually run the mission, bookmark a wreck, turn in the mission, then come back with a salvager.
I have so much serpentis salvage I'm not so diligent about salvaging them anymore. I tend to salvage if they are another faction or if there were high-level frigates and cruisers.

Edited by: Gary Hagon on 17/05/2007 19:12:13 Yep loot and salvage,,,just book mark a cargo can in each stage of the mission. When finished go back to agent and complete mission,,that way you can warp straight to your bookmarks(all dead space is removed) save you flying through all the stages again. I use a thorax for salavging, 5 expanders,M/Warp drive, cap rechargers, 2 salavgers and 3 tractor beams. I clear about 50 cans in under 10 minutes on average.
Hope this info helps someone

I loot and salvage. I use a Gallente destroyer loaded with 4xtractors and 4x salvegers. It's fast, so even if the mission is a couple of hops away I don't mind. Any crap loot I cannot sell I give to my manufacturer to help in the production of ships and modules. Forum sig |

QFT, Those cap consoles make missions like Pirate Invasion just so sweet. I did the mission in my Domi (very easy) and looted/salvaged with my Catalyst. This all was done in 40 minutes and the bounties + loot + salvage was about 25 mil isk in total. That's almost 40 million isk per hour. |

Meh, it depends. It can take almost as long to loot and salvage as to do the mission. And salvaging takes bloody forever with a 15% salvage chance. (I use a typhoon or cat to salvage.)
I'm beginning to think that salvaging isn't worth the isk/hour unless you have a high salvage skill and salvage rigs. Looting might be.
Either way, salvaging is mind numbingly boring. Looting is simply boring. Missioning in a raven is ...... err I see a trend here.

I'm dreading to ask this, as it may make rigs even more expensive, but has anyone actually studied the difference between the two? I know it's hard because of so many variables (namely need to make sure to get the same number and type of mission in a row) but just wondering. Cause I'm out for the isk and the LPs, I know I can get more LP doing hit and runs, but if I get more (or equal) money that way too, I may swap. Hell, it's about 100mil if I sell of my salvager anyway. And seeing as it might be easier to buy a CNR than get one through LPs...

Generally I don't bother looting or salvaging, it takes far too much micromanagement for it to be fun (for me). I also don't really want to waste time training skills that don't help me kill stuff :)

That is pretty good list. I myself loot only Bersek ('EoM' - awesome loot, nerfbat has missed those guys, they drop as good as 0.0 battleships) and when in right mood then missions against merchenaries.
At the end of day it is depending on your mission running speed what missions and if they are worth loting and or salvaging for you. Faster you can do them then less missions are worth the loot/salvage.

Interesting replies. Thanks.
I really should be more organised and run 16 missions shoot and scoot and time them, and 16 mission with full loot and salvage, and details on what loot and salvage each mission gave me. I doubt if I'll ever be organised enough to do that though!
As an aside, if I want to be kind to some newer players and hand out bookmarks in local for people to go and salvage and loot my missions, what's the best way for me to do it? If I drop it in a can for them, most people will assume I'm setting them up for a can theft gank.

running 1-2 level 4s a day, looting and salvaging, lets me make a raven every 2 weeks or so from recycled minerals + selling off the salvage, gives an additional 150-175m every 2 weeks on top of bounties/lp and mission reward.
Its silly not to loot tbh, its wasting money. Obviously you dont salvage the crap like duo of Death, but a level 4 mordus is around 80 cans and that's well worth the effort. Getting a good EoM mission as well is ca-ching for large salvage.
I salvage in a logistics ship, 3 tractor, 3 salvagers and 2 salvage rigs, 5 exp II cans, goes at a decent speed and gets around 1500m cargo space, which is plenty for the majority of missions if you ignore the 800 charges.

I use 2 chars to do my missions. My main goes in and gets all the aggro or kills a room. Then my alt comes in to loot and salvage.
This works well and keeps my isk earning as high as I can get it because I dont have to wait around to finish looting / salvaging, I simply finish a mission with my alt doing what they need to and start another mission which they warp to when they are done.

There are 3 ways to do this as far as I am aware.
1 - Direct Trade them the BM at a station 2 - Gang them and get them to worp to you in the mission zone 3 - Leave BM in can for them to take (As you say this is the least liked option due to the kill rights for 15 minutes for theft)

I always loot and salvage. Doesnt matter if its 80% frig ships. If I dont **** up and mistakingly click on I've finished the job at the agent as I switch to my dedicated loot ships. I also 3box, so looting/salvaging doesnt take THAT long.

No. I don't loot or salvage. It just takes too much time since this salvage business was introduced. Having to make two passes with a salvage destroyer and then another pass to collect everything with an industrial ship is just not fun.
It was far better when I could just send my Crane out with an afterburner and tractor beam and clean up a Guristas Extravaganza in 20 minutes.

I always loot and salvage. It would be very wasteful not to IMHO.
Like many, I use a dedicated salvage ship - mine is a Catalyst with a 5 tractor beam, 3 salvager, 3 cap rechargers, 1 MAPC and 3 salvage tackle I (rigs) setup. I use a MWD to dash between wreck groups, and impulse speed to drag wrecks and cans along by tractor beam. I find the 5/3 setup much faster than the original 4/4 setup I used. I often need to return in an industrial to collect my collected loot cans.
I also will loot/salvage one pocket before continuing on to the next pocket on long missions; otherwise my wrecks may disappear before I have finished the mission. Be sure to bookmark each pocket so that you can return to your wrecks after the mission is closed.
I sell what loot is at a decent price and reprocess any items I cannot sell, or those for which the offer price takes the p!ss. Your reprocessing skills will define what the margin is, but 40% of market value for poor skills down to 26% for decent skills would be my guide. Don't sell at ludicrously low prices guys; melt the mods down - minerals can almost always be sold at a decent price. You will make more isk and you will not be supporting a bunch of rip off artists either.

i stopped to acquire LP faster to get my cnr's offer but am going to start it up again since the lvl 4's are so predictably boring now for me. i so wish there were like 5 variations of the mission and you wouldn't know which one till u got there, same enemies, just different triggers and ship classes (reg cruiser -> HAC) Back to looting though it alwasy depends on the mission.
lets say its massive attack sanasha lvl 4 i will pass cause its all frigs and such where AE and GE is 6 stages of 5-8 BS each lots of 800 cap boosters and salvage ftw
