I definately loot and salvage! Have you seen the price of rig material, especially since wrecks dont drop as much as they did? Over 250k isk per alloy bar for example. I have a deal with several players who manufacture rigs and other stuff who are only too keen to buy my salvage. And I'm finding weapon drops worth over 1 million a piece is most satisfying as well! What I tend to do is to collect everything in my dedicated salvager, reprocess mods which sell for below 10k, fill up my Badger Mk2 with everything else, and once every couple of weeks haul it to somewhere like Jita where I sell it for on average 50 to 60 million. And thats just for the mods, jig material and alloys normally get me between 60 and 100 million every week or so. That which does not kill us makes us stronger. I loot and salvage when I can, and somtimes, if there are hostiles in the systems I rat in when not PVPing I will even kit out an uberfast inty with a couple of salvagers and go pick up everyone else's rat droppings. Never been popped once doing this, and you can fit a lot of salvage int an inty hold.
I have gone away after a few hours with half a cargohold full of salvgae and made a hundred million or built a few rigs for myself.
Its a cheap and cheerful way to make money...

I never loot or salvage unless its a drone mission but i tend to avoid them. I get through missions fast and it takes me longer to salvage and loot than it does to run the mission itself. I still make about 20m an hour in bountys and bonuses though.

Loot & salvage of battleships only. If you take your spreadsheet and make separate columns for battleship & everything else, you'll see the lion's share of the loot and salvage comes from the battleships. The rest is a total waste of time. Cherrypicking only battleships lets you clean up most L4s in just a few minutes..
It also depends on the rat type. Guristas, Serpentis, Gallente & Caldari faction? Don't bother to salvage, BS looting optional. Sansha, Blood, Angels, Amarr and Minmatar faction? Yes please! Might even salvage BCs and cruisers if they're close.

Yep. Made 27 million for 50 minutes' worth of salvaging/looting on Blood Raider Blockade tonight. Definitely worth one's time.

Kill everything, bookmark, return in salvaging BC. Loot/salvage. Reprocess 90% of loot for min's that build me stuff, and use salvage to produce my own rigs. Can get pretty self-sufficient if you do all three.

i scan down and salvage other peoples missions and loot where possible ( as long as they aint light blue or blue stnadings) then yeah if they aint in a corp or even going solo and not looting and salvage as they go their loss is my profit.

Edited by: Max1mus on 21/05/2007 15:37:02 So far I loot and salvage.
Mission is run in a nighthawk, then I come back in an amarr destroyer fitted wit 4 tractors and 4 salvage.
If you are one of the few that that run 2 characters at the same time, simply gang up your alt in a hauler and pull them in when you go back to salvage. This is where the trick comes in, set them to "keep at range" of about 500mtrs, that way when you are running around at full ab picking up loot and salvaging, your hauler will continually slow boat behind you. Full cargo hold ? Easy, wait 2 minutes and 6,500m3 of hauler will be right next to you again
Hope this tip helps someone else

Originally by: JamnOne I shoot, loot, salvage - and depending on my mood and Ore in the area - I mine.
Ran a lvl 4 mission the other day - and was suppose to complete it in less than 6 hours to 1.5M bonus. Thanks to have a friend along I did it in less than hour, salvaged the whole mission went back and mined it up to 5 hours and 55 mins. Got 1.5M for Bonus, over 2 mil for mining, and over a mil for the stuff I did put on market or reprocessed and put on market as minerals.
Let's do the math here, shall we?
You got a mission. We'll assume the base payout was 1.5m, as base and bonus are usually close to each other, and that there were no bounties (obviously there were, but I'm making the point that even with zero bounties, my argument still stands). You said it took you less than an hour to complete, but we'll call it an hour for simplicity (and again, to demonstrate that even under worse circumstances my argument stands)
Hour 1: You do the mission, earning 1.5m base + the bonus 1.5m if you turn it in before the end of hour 6. Hours 2-6: You loot, salvage, and mine, earning another 3m.
So, in the first hour, you made 3m, and then you took another 5 hours to make another 3m. If you had simply turned in the mission immediately, and gotten another, you could have been making 3m PER hour for the next five hours, plus 6 times the LP. And that's assuming no bounties, in reality the mission was likely worth 5-10m in bounties, making the amount of ISK you lost dramatically higher.
Why on earth would you do that?

You know what happens when you assume? you make an a** outta u and me.
Couldn't resist.
Point is, you really can't be making these blanket assumptions, you must go with averages and real numbers, or your entire argument is theoretical. I could produce numbers to go the other way myself, they wouldn't be right, but they'd be numbers. Krav =====

He was using real numbers, they were supplied by an advocate of salvaging and mining. I personally salvage after missions, I figure it gets me around the same isk/hour as missions running with no risk of dieing. A cool down

Call me dumb, but what mission is "EoM" short for. Having a senior moment here!
I looted a nice mission last night, the first I've done since starting this post. Good saleable stuff was a couple of 1400 artys, an Arbalest siege (pure luck I think, very rarely get Arbs of any kind) and plenty of alloyed trit bars. A load of other chaff I just melted down. I have to say it was worth salvaging.
The thing I really, really hate and wish CCP would sort this one out, is when a ship has NO loot and salavges for nothing either. I mean, what's the point of that?

Edited by: Loc Maythan on 22/05/2007 11:43:59 I used to loot/salvage all missions. However, I am becoming a little more selective of late. Some missions, such as Blockade against Serpentis, are rubbish for loot at the moment, and I'm not going to waste my time salvaging wrecks scattered over a wide area just to get a few more useless salvage parts to toss on the pile which is now so large that if it topples over, the station will go crashing into the planet. If a reasonable number of the wrecks, particularly the battleship wrecks, have loot, I will come back and loot/salvage those wrecks, but all the empty wrecks get left.
Against the more 'unusual' factions - Angels, Bloods, Mercenaries - or rogue drones, I will go back and loot/salvage everything.
My approach to looting, which is no doubt the norm, is to BM the mission rooms, complete the mission, and come back in a dedicated salvage ship. This is because I don't want to compromise my mission ship with salvage mods, and the salvage ship - a Brutix - is faster, can fit more tractors and salvagers, and has a larger cargohold with the cargo expanding mods and rigs I have fitted. If the mission generates more loot than will fit in the Brutix - currently 1,320 m3 - I will stick everything in a jetcan which I drag behind me, and come back with my trusty Iteron V after the salvaging has been completed.

As a newbie, I definitely loot and especially salvage.
Those level 1 missions when you're just starting to build LP's often only pay a few hundred thousand ISK--including bounties. You can beat that salvaging just ONE rig component from a single wreck. Salvaging is such an easy skill to acquire, it's well worth it. As a newbie, I have my mission frigate fitted with a salvager, and if there are just a few wrecks I'll clean up myself; if there's a bunch, I'll come back with my salvage frigate. I did up to a couple of million ISK per mission during my 14-day free trial period.

I agree, same here.

I fly a brutix for salvaging too. I need more m3, I only do 600-some odd m3. Could you post your setup? 1.3k is enough for the majority of missions.

I loot but not salvage-- when my alt is feeling well (and my computer is too, poor thing) she loots and salvages.
I've not paid attention to comparisons because at this point ISK for rewards doesn't mean much-- I loot so that I can reprocess the minerals into my first cap ship. More of an rp thing I guess-- making one's next weapon of destruction from the corpses of one's enemies (or near enough their corpses). I also don't play to be productive, just to have fun.

I find looting and salvaging is often good for ISK, but sooo dull and also so dependant on what faction you are fighting, that I'm thinking of changing into a shooter and scooter.
i loot and salvage only if the mission is in the same system as my agent, if i have to go several jumps i dont bother.

I dont believe it is short for any mission. I believe that is the type of rats found in a mission, Gone Berserk for example where you get EoM Dark Knights and EoM Dark Lords.

I'm not logged in at the moment, so this is from memory, and may be wrong:
Hi: 4 x tractor, 3 x salvager Mid: 1 x AB (or MWD, if you prefer), 3 x Cap Recharger IIs Lo: 5 x Expanded Cargohold IIs Rigs: 1 x Cargohold Optimisation I
At some point I want to fit two more Cargohold Optimisation rigs for even more space, and then I may have to permanently replace the AB with a MWD for speed reasons. I can currently get 240 m/s with the AB running.

Yes. EoM is rat type in gone bersek mission. They have Amarr hulls but do kin/thermal damage and shoot missiles. Something like Khanid ships should be.
Apparently they drop loot from Blood Raider and Gurista loot tables simultaneosly and as good as 0.0 rats do. Plenty of lasers, missile launchers and cap charges usually. As a result it is currently definately worth looting them for now (until nerfbat smacks them).

Loot and salvage - ALWAYS.
Setup a destroyer with 3 tractors/5 Salvagers with all cargo expanders in the lows. Throw on a ABII, and it can cruise at about 1000 m/s no problem. Level 4s, like all missions, pay crap for actually doing the mission. The real money is in the bounties/loot/salvage. Skipping out on half/70% your payout is just not very smart or efficient.
Yes, if you try to throw 1 salvager on your Raven, you'll think its stupid, because you're not being very smart about how you go about it. You need tractor beams to be pulling wrecks toward you, and you need multiple salvagers (5 is awesome) so you can always have 2 or 3 per can so they salvage in one cycle. If you're in a room where you just cleared 40 ships, you should be clearing that room in 5-10 minutes max, any longer than that and you can improve your salvaging operation considerably.
Coming back after you finish the mission (so deadspace is gone and you can warp straight to can bookmarks at each room), it takes me no more than 10 minutes to clear out a mission with all the loot and salvage.
This is a breakdown of how my ISK usually works:
Mission + bonus: 5-8M LP: 8-10K Bounties: 4-25M Loot: 20-80M Salvage: 5-30M
Average L4 mission: 37-143M. Not bad, eh? For those of you saying, WTH she's making that up, or "I don't get that much from my loot and salvage" it's because the vast majority of mission runners I've run into reprocess 90% of their modules. Even if you have really good reprocessing skills, you're almost always better off selling those modules at a market hub like Jita. So what do I do? After a mission I throw all my "sell this" mods into a big station container named Jita, and once in a while my Iteron hauler heads out there and makes bank. Same with salvage, almost always better to sell the parts then try to make your own rigs and use/sell them. Are you a manufacturing specialist or good at running missions? Stick to what you're good at imo. Also, finishing the missions quickly is nice too, I use a Dominix with Ogres/Wardens to kill everything, and I just fly through missions. If you're saying, "well, that's great for you, but these missions take me 6 hours each in my assault frig/t2whatever" - decide if you want to do the mission in a cool ship for the hell of it or whether you're trying to make money as quickly and efficiently as possible. A lot of ships can do L4 missions, but some do them faster than others.
Other notes:
I operate in low-sec. I operate with 3 agents in 2 stations in the same system. Quality 20, 7, and 0. I turn down missions that have low payouts (like 2M total), are against drones (no loot, just those minerals to refine, which never make as much money as loot sales because I am not a miner/refiner by trade), and missions that are several jumps away (I don't like to waste time travelling) and so if my 20 agent gives me a mission I don't want, I turn him down and try the quality 7 agent, then the quality 0 one as well. So far, I have never had to turn down all 3 agents when I wanted to do a mission.
If you find looting boring, you're not getting good enough loot or not getting it fast enough, the destroyer with its 8 hi slots, fast speed and agility is really the optimal looter. Try one out and you'll quickly agree.
