In the lobby of CCP it would be great. In a public setting, not so much.

I dont know how the place is managed and all, but I would do everything to get it like I want, as capsuleer. And I would do everything to let Icelandic public be aware about this game.
Art or not, its pretty enough. Only it looks low res on this picture I made.

If we could convert pissing and whinging on the forums to dc current maybe we could use cathodic protection.
If we include Reddit too, we could probably power Iceland with the excess juice! |

Not knowing what object it is, someone would say "what, is that a monument to acorns?" |

I think the gradual deterioration of the "monument" is a good thing.
People come, people go so it seems appropriate.
Let it weather - it'll look more interesting. |

Let it weather - it'll look more interesting. in 50 years not a single person alive will care about the monument or that EVE ever even existed. So the plates rot away into nothingness leaving a couple chunks of stone. No longer a monument, not sure it even counts as art. In 20 years anybody who still remembers will look back with embarrassment. "I played a video game" is not an accomplishment to be memorialized. It was ridiculous in both concept and execution. I agree, let it rot.

My annoyance at being unsubbed at the time names were chosen for the monument is now somewhat lessened by the fact you wouldn't see my name anyway.
Should have hired a corrosion engineer CCP, but it's still a cool gesture. Not many other games can claim to have a monument to their players, I imagine it's quite expensive for what it is.

mkint wrote:Rain6637 wrote:What would preserve the name plates? Stainless steel? Acrylic that can be buffed periodically? Ideally a monument is zero maintenance. That's why bronze plaques are made of bronze, for the corrosion resistance. Any kind of plastic or paint would need regular maintenance, even the best are vulnerable to UV and oxidation. In any setting I can think of, if there's a chance of corrosion you either galvanize, paint, or use stainless or bronze, but never aluminum. I suppose titanium also would have been a successful option. For now though? It's doomed. imo, it was a dumb idea from the beginning. Probably not worth fixing. They got their marketing out of it, and I wouldn't be surprised if icelandic tax dollars helped pay for it. So... sucks to be icelandic?
Titanium would cost too much.
It's also right by the sea IIRC so that also did not help the whole thing
I really don't get the aluminum material choice either. The real + of Aluminium is usually the good strength to weight ratio. Having some family who work in a smelter, I also learned that it's not exactly rare for batches to contain iron among other things which limit the resistance to rust. |

The Eve Monument name plates are corroding ?

https://www.eveonline.com/monument/
Well, that's definitely sad news indeed.
To make it worse I located my name on the right side edge of a plate facing the Ocean, Row 2, Column 7, Line 14 (I actually counted 15 lines).
I guess in true Minmatar tradition my name has now turned into rust.

I'm pretty sure those 2 things are completely unrelated. I mean, I'm pretty sure the Pyramids are built in in Egypt because that's where the Egyptians lived, not some awesome foresight about monuments better withstanding the test of time... |

Just so happens that desert environments are amazing at preserving giant monuments.
A Minmatar warship is like a rusting Beetle with 500 horsepower Cardillac engines in the rear, armour plating bolted to chassis and a M2 Browning stuck on top.

Or that giant chunks of stone stand the test of time fairly well, who would have thought.
