Visited Reykjavik last two weeks. For a company that tweeted "It's been an amazing 20 years thanks to you, the players who breathe life into our games." they sure do not care about the customers they honored with this monument, seeing its detoriating state.'

Really? Maybe on Greenland and Antarctica. Icecaps melting will actually raise the ocean levels by quite a lot, reducing coastlines everywhere.

Well there isn't much you can do when you pick the wrong materials, that looks like rust, you can't really do much about that unless you started with something that doesn't rust |

Ever have a glass of ice melt? What happened? It filled up with the same volume of water? Sort of. Ever freeze a bottle of water? Did the bottle expand a little?
All this "the sea levels are rising!!!! OMG TAX ALL THE THINGS" is BS. See even the "secular" types have an end time prophecy based on "punishments for sins" or something (the more things change....) except the more arcane types never asked to tax everything we do to stop it.
Meanwhile, in Middle America, we actually wish the sea levels would rise so the coastal cities would drown and we can be free of their votes.
As for the monument: It's perfectly representing the state of the game and the relationship between CCP and the player base at the moment. Everything is fine. (hurf blurf)

I do some related work. And yeah, obviously you start with appropriate materials. But then you follow an appropriate maintenance schedule. The work I do has a 7 to 15 year maintenance cycle depending on materials in a semi-industrial setting much of it coastal. Even if they made a spectacular failure in choice of materials, they could still go out and hose the salt spray off it a couple times a year. I've seen thousand-year-old monuments in better condition. No, this monument was never about being an actual monument to players, it was an ego project for Hilmar exploited for marketing, while becoming a sad microcosm of the state of EVE.

If I recall correctly, from the reports regarding the vandalizing of the monument, those plates are made of aluminum. They don't rust. But what we gain from not rusting from getting wet once (like a project car with the paint stripped off will practically rust overnight if the weather is humid) we get in long term corrosion. Aluminum corrodes way worse than metal rusts. It "explodes". Ever seen aluminum corrode when inside a laminate because salt water got into one crack? It's ugly. I worked as a marine mechanic for a while and have seen some horrid examples of boats.
Would have been better to engrave the names in steel plates, and then let it rust for a "Minmatar look". This aluminum in that salty environment won't last.

The tiles were of laser-engraved aluminum, then placed on the floor right by the sea. They don't oxidize*, they just corrode themselves to hell and that can be seen in the places more exposed to salty water (corners and edges).
*aluminum is always oxidized, covered with a thin layer of aluminum oxide. Unfortunately and unlike stainless steel, that layer doesn't prevents oxygen to penetrate further and turn the metal into more aluminum oxide i.e. corrode it. |
