Mr Epeen Icecaps melting would actually increase the area of farmable and liveable space. Really? Maybe on Greenland and Antarctica. Icecaps melting will actually raise the ocean levels by quite a lot, reducing coastlines everywhere. Ever have a glass of ice melt? What happened? It filled up with the same volume of water? Sort of. Ever freeze a bottle of water? Did the bottle expand a little? All this "the sea levels are rising!!!! OMG TAX ALL THE THINGS" is BS. See even the "secular" types have an end time prophecy based on "punishments for sins" or something (the more things change....) except the more arcane types never asked to tax everything we do to stop it. Meanwhile, in Middle America, we actually wish the sea levels would rise so the coastal cities would drown and we can be free of their votes. As for the monument: It's perfectly representing the state of the game and the relationship between CCP and the player base at the moment. Everything is fine. (hurf blurf)
I'd agree with you, if all the ice on the world were floating. Unfortunately, quite a lot of it is over landmasses, so when it melts it will increase sea level because you're adding more water to the same bowl.
And middle America wants to teach creationism as science. Those of us on the coasts really don't give two fucks what you want - you've proven your inability to make a coherent decision. Repeatedly.

That's never happened before, he said sarcastically. Well there isn't much you can do when you pick the wrong materials, that looks like rust, you can't really do much about that unless you started with something that doesn't rust I do some related work. And yeah, obviously you start with appropriate materials. But then you follow an appropriate maintenance schedule. The work I do has a 7 to 15 year maintenance cycle depending on materials in a semi-industrial setting much of it coastal. Even if they made a spectacular failure in choice of materials, they could still go out and hose the salt spray off it a couple times a year. I've seen thousand-year-old monuments in better condition. No, this monument was never about being an actual monument to players, it was an ego project for Hilmar exploited for marketing, while becoming a sad microcosm of the state of EVE. If I recall correctly, from the reports regarding the vandalizing of the monument, those plates are made of aluminum. They don't rust. But what we gain from not rusting from getting wet once (like a project car with the paint stripped off will practically rust overnight if the weather is humid) we get in long term corrosion. Aluminum corrodes way worse than metal rusts. It "explodes". Ever seen aluminum corrode when inside a laminate because salt water got into one crack? It's ugly. I worked as a marine mechanic for a while and have seen some horrid examples of boats. Would have been better to engrave the names in steel plates, and then let it rust for a "Minmatar look". This aluminum in that salty environment won't last. Like I said, spectacular failure in choice of materials (and I'm still pretty sure that hosing it down every spring would have helped.) Why did they not make it from stainless steel? Stainless may have been harder to work with, but it should have cost about the same and not failed so miserably in those conditions. I live on a 50 year old sailboat (on salt water) and the stainless shrouds, chainplates, and pulpits are all still in pristine condition, no noticeable corrosion.

That figures, as Washington, DC, is on the East Coast. Have you noted the decisions coming out of there lately? Should the monument be placed there it would corrode to a gooey paste from all the phony tears being shed over all the phony issues designed to enrich all the phony blowhards who hail, actually, from all the states. Maybe we could construct the monument out of a different material, but is there an idiot proof material?

That's why bronze plaques are made of bronze, for the corrosion resistance. Any kind of plastic or paint would need regular maintenance, even the best are vulnerable to UV and oxidation. In any setting I can think of, if there's a chance of corrosion you either galvanize, paint, or use stainless or bronze, but never aluminum. I suppose titanium also would have been a successful option.
For now though? It's doomed. imo, it was a dumb idea from the beginning. Probably not worth fixing. They got their marketing out of it, and I wouldn't be surprised if icelandic tax dollars helped pay for it. So... sucks to be icelandic?

Bronze or stainless steel would work. Bronze is the real deal, it is known to resist thousands of years, whereas stainless steel works fine unless it contacts rusty iron/steel, as that will cause spot rusting and if large enough can lead to corrosion.
The problem is cost, bronze is really expensive and engraving it is even more expensive, whereas laser engraving stainless steel is something that probably CCP couldn't find in Iceland.
Anyway we're talking the company that buried a laptop with a bunch of videos in a SSD as "time capsule" at that very monument.

I sense some blame on CCP. The way I imagine it went down is they paid a vendor who designed it. I doubt it was CCP who specified 2mm aluminum plating or whatever that is. I mean, I'm sure they thought they were paying for something that would last. They just cut the check.

If that is a head, I am really worried about artist. The monolith looks like nothing from EVE, only this mirror looks more like monolith in Dead End. From all those shapes that had to symbolize something, the monolith/mirror shape looks like is the most appealing and somewhat tied to New Eden, but it is boring shape, all of them are boring, no work was put into it overall.
Capsule on the other hand is very nice in shape and they could have put it with exhaust facing down. Bronze capsule would look very alien to anyone, but familiar at the same time to EVE players.
