Yeah, Memorial Day is the Monday the week after next. Therefore, most of North America probably isn't on vacation, as the US makes up nearly 70% of the North American population.

I don't doubt a lot of these people saying they're quitting on the forums are indeed quitting, and lots more are leaving silently. Lots of the people that are being hassled by the lagging systems live out of them, and being full time mission runners it's all they want or have in this game. They probably just move on to other games to grind in where the NPC grind isn't as bad as eve's. -----

i Dont think that statement is entirely true - game doesnt suck and CCP do care just not a lot they can do about what i believe you are inferring,
Summer always see's a decline in peeps online - i do know quite a few peeps are taking long breaks from Eve atm but i dont believe for one moment a Exodus of subcribers are closing their accounts, Tbh i think most are adapting to the new game play rather than leaving, although a lot are frustrated but i doubt they will be leaving Eve - its too damn addictive - DAMN YOU CCP FOR MY ADDICTION :)

Seems pretty stable to me, slight decline since what seems to have been quite a spike around mid November last year (The release of Revelations I assume) but nothing very dramatic. ----------- When I was a n00b, I spake as a n00b, I understood as a n00b, I thought as a n00b: but when I became pr0, I put away n00bish things. |

? http://eve.coldfront.net/status/tranquility We already too much lag, so we don't need new players...
___ I prefer to reduce the number of players to 28k or below. |

Looking at numbers from http://eve.coldfront.net/status/tranquility
- User count peak was 34 420 about 4 months ago - Current user count peaks are at about 28-31k depending on weekday - Overall trend of user count has been rather stalled after the t20 incident, fluctuation has increased
Based on those I'd say that now all those who decided to cancel their accounts/not renew them (there's a difference) are now starting to expire and thus they're leaving the game. At the same time CCP is doing those cheesy ads aimed at those who have been away from the game for a year to get back old players but generally it seems like the old players log in, look around a bit and generally after month or two of playing leave again because it's still the same EVE that made them stop playing.
Of course time of year affects this too but not that drastically since most schools and such haven't ended yet. That'd be what'll happen in next three weeks. Also a lot of working people like to spend their two holiday weeks in about 6 weeks from now so that is in my opinion a non-factor at the moment also.

Summer = lots more people spending time outside rather than inside on their Pc's. Also the vast majority of the student population who play Eve will be having exams right about now.

I was thinking the same thing myself the other day. Normally on a weekend when i logged on there were between 30 to 33k players and CCP used to say wow another record numbers of players online, now i see only about 28k users or so on line. It has been slowley declining for a few months now.
Looks like people have done what they said and left, Maybe all the lag and bugs that should have been fixed months and months ago have finally got to people and maybe the bob thing affected more people than they realised.

- very very boring alliance warfare (titans,ms AND POS) - blobs everywhere - lag - cheating devs - boring, repetitive pve content - bugs not being fixed, that exist for more than 2 years (drones etc.) - unbalanced ships, regions - badly programmed client - universe looks everywhere the same

If people leave because of motsu, I for one don't want them back. They would lower the collective IQ of the game.

There is always a decline around this time of year. However the decline as a % of the players seems steeper this year than in past years.
There are probably a number of factors. EVE is aging as a game. That is one factor.
EVE is not particularly new player friendly. It has hard for new players to break out in the game, and thus they decide quickly that since they can't make a difference they leave.
We had devs who were caught up in a scandal and its fallout for far to long. They still have not to the satisfaction of many addressed the issue appropriately. They spent almost an entire month of blogs attacking the whistleblower rather than punishing the guilty dev or providing game relevant blogs about game direction.
The lag has consistently gotten worse over the last 6 months. This lag is affecting the mission runners, plexers, and pvpers the most. Anything in which there seems to be considerable objects on the same grid seems to induce lag for many.
It is difficult to say what the long term effects will be, because it is difficult to predict what the devs might do in the future. It is likely that at the time of the next major patch we will see a small increase again. However it is also possible that EVE has had its golden age and is now entering a period of decline as games of this type do. I suppose the devs can be happy that the decline is not swift as it was for SWG after SOE introduced the NGE. Idea: Treaties Idea: Jump Rigs |
