I sell medium nos in a low sec system for a nice price of 350k isk,
There is 1 scammer in same system that has 1 on sale for 100mil isk.
So this morning i find that ive been paid 100mil for 1 of my nos's.
Now i know this is the normal game mechanics but i feel sorry for the poor numpty that spent the 100mil.
what would you do?
keep the 10% towards a cap ship for my corp.
or
return the cash

Not really. refunds are bad biz..
I wouldnt have anything up at grief prices though.. 2x 3x even 4x avg value might be acceptable, but I dont sell anything at unfair prices..
A crying evemail would just be trashed, but a serious chat might make me compasionate..

Well the player that made the mistake is over 3 years old and he hasnt contacted me about it, i just feel like i scammed him even though all im doing is selling the cheapest nos's in the area.
Its my name that will be in his wallet as the reciever of the 100mil so i suppose its up to him to contact me.

So how does that work, you getting 100 mill when it's the scammer that has one for sale for 100 mill?
I've always wondered who buys those 7 million isk shuttles you see for sale. Since a few weeks back, I know. It's me. Damn did I feel stupid when I noticed it. I'm just glad it wasn't 70 million, nor 100. I got that lesson fairly cheap.
I would look at their information and then decide.
If their bio doesn't say "I pwn all" or "feck y000", I'd probably return 90% of it or something like that.

I wouldn't.
Not too long ago someone tried to place a buy order for some salvage materials at 127,000 per, he added two zeros.
My only regret is that I didn't have more than 50something of whatever it was. I got 650mill though.

If someone places a buy order for something at 100mill, and your sell order for the same item at a lower price is in their buy range, your order auto-sells to them. Nifty, right?
For instance, in this case what probably happened is that someone tried to place a SELL order for X number of nos at 100mill but accidentally clicked BUY X number at 100mill instead.

If you click on the most expensive order in a station you always get the cheapest one sold to you but still pay the higher price.
so if i sell an item for 1 isk and someone else sells the same item for 100 isk and the buyer tries to buy the 100 isk item, then the 1 isk seller sells one of his items but gets 100 isk instead.
i think it's part of ccp's attempt at stopping money laundering but i could be wrong.

I once sold a 5mill ship for 1bill+.. the guy mailed me as you probably would, I thought about it a while, decided that if I had done the same i'd appreciate the isk back. So that's what i did.. he was kind enough to give me 50mill for my trouble.
Of course the next day I accidently sold two 70mill ships for 7mill.. wondering if my karma would hold up I sent a polite mail asking if they could return some of the isk. Naturally they didn't, didn't hear a peep, that's karma for you :)
Still, i'd return it again.. felt like the right thing to do.. that guy had put time into earning that isk, who was I to steal it from him.

Sounds a little like the scammer who was selling the NOS for a 100 Million made a mistake and ended up scamming himself.
A newbie would not have 100 million to throw away and definitely would sending a EVE-Mail.

However, have you thought about potential consequences?
If the guy who has bought it has loads of ISK or powerful friends etc. he'll have your name in his sales journal. He might land a ton of trouble at your door, maybe even a merc corps if he's got enough ISK and thinks you've ripped him off on purpose.

The larger the sum, the more incentive to give it back actually. Keep it and you lose a potential customer, possibly make an enemy with friends. It is unwise to wonder if you have made an enemy, it is best to be sure. Give it back and be remembered as someone owed a favor.
Keep your friends close, your enemies closer.. manipulate both to your advantage.

This is your own test of morality, don't try to bring us into your guilt trip! In rl, if someone hands gives you change for say, $100USD instead of $10USD, do you give it back or walk away. The consequence-free environment of Eve shouldn't really change how you deal with those situations, unless of course you are a role-player.

You don't really know how you got that money. It could be an honest mistake from a normal person, or it could be something else. You don't need to search these forums for very long to find threads started by up and coming macro farmers or ISK retailers complaining that their attempt to obfuscate a transfer went horribly wrong.

I've never been ˝scammed+ that way, but if that happened to me, I would send back all of the money -except for the 350k iskies yours costed. I know EVE is a hash and brutal world but good moral pays off in the long term. If it didn't, why do we cooperate at all? Why do some species cooperate with other species? Being a bad boy pays of in the short run, but in the long run it's better to be a nice person with good moral. It's proved by evolution (else we wouldn't have been cooperative at all), so give the money back! Perhaps he'll give you a little reward for your good moral

Return the isk. Being fair and refunding the overpayment is a way to let the poor sod know that not all the players in the game are arrogant tossers looking to put the screws to anyone who makes a simple mistake. You are assuming it's a bug... it may not be, it's selling the lowest priced object (first on the list) at the price agreed to by the buyer...
While I have never seen or had this problem that I know of, if I went to buy an item, I see the price I am paying and agree to it... I do not know who I got it from until after I paid for it, and most likely will never know how much they were asking.
If contacted by the buyer, I would send them the difference (or some other agreed upon amount up to that amount)... but they need to contact you as they were the ones that made the mistake (Not sorting by price and buying the lowest priced item)

I always refund these mistakes. I'd want my isk back, and good deeds don't go unnoticed in the grand scheme of things. Same guy that you helped out then might just be in a corp you want to join later that year, and what then?
That and common decency. One of the times someone was selling TS scram for higher than average, but cheaper than what they were going for a few months before (which was what I thought they were still at), so I say I'll take it. I look up contracts, say crap I'm getting ripped, and the guy accepts trade before I stick in my cash. I accept and then wire him the money manually. Accepting is just one of those reflexes everyone has :X -----

Of course, he promptly and courteously emailed the sales alt that had the Kestrels listed. We refunded the entire 970 million ISK, less our 280k price for each Kestrel and less the station sales tax we were charged on the incremental amount of the sale. After the refund, he thoughtfully sent us a 20 million ISK gift of appreciation, which we graciously accepted.

I think this was likely caused by someone trying to raise the average prices of an item in order to skew the market graphs.
By buying their own (overpriced) item they would raise the average price. The thing they messed up is by putting a buy range on it, or by doing it in the station where you had your normal sell order.
Take the money, it wasn't an accident, it was intended and stupid. :D __________ The opinion(s) expressed above are mine alone and are not necessarily endorsed or supported by my Corporation or Alliance. |

probably it's not a scammer. noob people try to transfer money from trial acc this way. put an item for sale for silly price, and buy that item with trial acc dude, effectively transfering 100 mil minus taxes from trial account. it's noobish because they don't know how market works - it always picks the lowest price offer, but still pays the price entered into market form.
btw it could be good business - searching market for stupid price tags, traveling there and putting the same item for lower price :)

heh about 8 months ago, some guy placed a buy order for an item that had a value of 20 mils, for 200 mils per unit, the market instabought my sell order as it was the cheapest on the market at the time,
i ended up with 1.6 bils+ (if i remember corrently) for 9 20 mil items mistakes happens, i gave the isks back when he made contact, the funny thing was that just 2 days ago he had smacked me on forums :)
When he explained the situation and the mistake he made, i asked him do you remember me? he said eerm, yeah :( i said no worries, set an escrow and i ll buy back all the items you bought frome me for the exact price he payed

If the person who got scammed was NAPed with me, 50% back, ally? 90% back. In my alliance/corp/just friend? Everything, except the item price (that I will give a 10% discount).
Anyone else: thanks for the isk.

I had this many times and always refunded, except for one occasion. I got a convo out of the blue and I was called scammer and fraud. When I told him to hold his horses and explain what was going on, he kept screaming and yelling about his ISK and that I had tricked him in the market.
I looked at the overview and he had bought an Ogre Drone for 20 million ISK or something. Its not much ISK to me, so I almost overlooked it.
I felt quite offended really by being called scammer and fraud and I explained to him that scamming through the market is nearly impossible, that he has entered a wrong value or someting in buying of the Ogre. I had them for sale for 14K ISK or something, there were still about 500 on the sellorder.
About fifteen minutes of conversation occured in which he kept offending me, and threatening ,whilst I only tried to calm him down and explain to him what he could have done wrong.
It was the one time that I had something like: convo closed, block on, read the f**king manual next time. He didn't get his ISK back.

Convo him and tell him you're the one with your isk, and that you won't be giving it back. See how he reacts. THEN, make your decision.

I'd say it would depend on how you see your Toon. Is he a fair and honest trader, or is he a Caldarian businessman...
I see myself as a fair trader, not really a shark. As you have done, I'd look his info up see if he's a newb or a seasoned dude. Noobs I might convo and have a chat with, where as an old toon like this I would wait to see if he convo's me.
Old hands like this should know the system, and if they fall it's either cause they try to 'scam' or is to 'tired'. If it's the former he doesnt deserve a reimbursement, if it's the latter well if he wants his Isk'ies back then he can Convo and we'll chat about it.
The OP have set up a fair trade, so it's not his fault that it happened. Wich in my book makes it the buyers perogative to make contact.
It's interesting to see how many people would pay it back. well for most of us 100m isnt that much, but still Isk'ies is Isk'ies.
Personally I'd never return cash to anyone (that isnt a friend=) unless they convo me, and convince me to do it. May sound harsh, many might say but it's a game! And that's exactly why I wont do it per default, I almost always do it when people convo me and we have a chat. It's one of the things, that makes this game unique for me. All the banter, communication, and chit/chat. I've not really seen it anywhere else. That coupled with a Cuttthroat market place, makes this the natural way for me to handle these kind of situations.

I had someone place a buy order for 30mill by accident instead of 3mill.
I returned the extra isk to the guy after he evemailed me and took a very small percentage for 'a lesson learned'. He mailed me back saying how grateful he was that he at least got something back ----------------- Drones : 19 skills, 20,480,000 points |

If he asked nicely I would give him the excess money back. If he was a jerk about it I would let him learn game mechanics the hard way.

well i am happy to hear that your feeling sorry for him. you should atleast check who it is and see if its a newer player you should atleast give some back, since its a hell lot of isk for a player 1 year or under. personally i wouldn't have been setting the orders up like that, i think there should be a mechanic stopping people from these types of misuse on mechanics, its unrealistic and game destroying...
besides, in a game where cursing at another player can get you banned, i find it wierd that your at the same time alot to do whatever you can to **** people off as long as you don't use words :S this is maybe not the best mentality to give people... the whole idea with people beeing free to do anything without risk kind of ****s it up for newer gamers and older for that matter. when people need help with missions etc, there is NON to get, why?! because the properbillity of beeing killed.
i like freedom, but this have just taken overhand, and you need to stop this childish beheaviour of "do what the **** i want, i don't care **** about any one.. DOHH."
well peace out there ___________________________________________ Humans take everything that is beautiful and sweet and turn it into something horrifying and ugly.

wasn't a scammer, was someone trying to use the market to transfer funds between characters when one is a trial. They are trying to circumvent game mechanics and deserve no mercy whatsoever.

I had this happen to me. The person evemailed me. I refunded the isk and in return got a VERY valuable set of trading tips and some extra ISK as well.
Someone earlier said that the lesson is worth more than the ISK. In my case it went the other way. Returning the ISK resulted in a great set of lessons. :)
