Well, i've been staying in low sec a lot lately and i've noticed something...differant. Way back when I first started this game pirates would fly into a system, go belt to belt, find you and kill you usually within an hour of you entering the system. however, now I can't even find a pirate when I TRY, and they all seem to balance themselves at 4.5 sec status so they aren't KOS.
Where did all the cool pirates go? The -10.00 badasses who would pop a stargate if they had the firepower? Did they all go away from Gallente space? Move to 0.0? Did Chuck Norris get to them? I'm not saying they don't exist, but the last week or two they've just been gone. WHY HAVE YOU ABANDONED ME!
Come back ;-; i'll be your target if you'll be mine. Or at least, tell me where you all are? :/ Have you all become weekend warriors? Do I need to get on saturdays more? ------------------------------------------------- Attention Devs, for every isk you send me one member of your family will be returned safely.

Many of them went to 0.0, since targets with expensive fits (that are profitable) actually rat in belts there.
Other than that, belt-hunting in low-sec isn't really the best option for pirating. People who rat in low-sec in 99 cases out of 100 have **** fittings and fly **** ships.
Piracy is about profit, and the potential for it. Going to belts to kill someone is just something most do when they're bored and feel like getting some smack entertainment in local from someone who knows BoB and will kill you with a titan.

Belt piracy died when miners stopped doing low-sec ops. Pirates used to enter local and ransom miners before even checking the belts. They often paid too, because they were still making a profit. Ore prices have changed since then.
Gate camping died down a lot since the WCS nerf and WTZ. Now there's only a 50% chance to catch that Indy, and 0% chance you'll escape if someone in a covops sneaks up on you as your sniping.

As soon as CCP give people a reason to be in low sec I'm sure the pirate will return shortly after. Right now whatever your doing in low sec can be done better in 0.0 and safer too. ------------------------------- C.D's Formula for success ------------------------------- Credit Card = Game Time Card Gametime Card = ISK Therefore Credit Card = ISK.

It's true I will only go roam from belt to belt when I'm bored or want to go find a few noobs to pop when they venture out of high sec. But like some of the others have said it's not profitable since mostly ratters in low sec have poor setups that won't net us much cash.

Long and the short of it was gradual changes to game mechanics killed it off to the point it just wasn't worth the effort of trying to be a belt pirate anymore. I'm sure a few truly dedicated ones still give it a shot but the fact is you get more results just sitting on a gate even if it is a hell of a lot more boring.

QFT. No point in going between 0.1 and 0.4. My main, having been one of those that used to mine in .2 space, and got blown up a few times and podded once, just doesn't see the point of mining there anymore. The ore isn't worth the risk, even for the crap-fitted cruisers used for mining.
What I think CCP should do is move some of the 0.0 ore up to those areas. Not big spawns with huge roids, but smaller spawns. Not too big to destroy balance, but big enough to attract the people who're willing to let greed over-come caution and make that risk/reward thing click in their head. Phoenix Logistics Industries |

Dont they plan on removing static belts entirely and making them all exploration sites? If they add some decent spawns in low sec from that people might start mining again. Also lvl 5 missions can be put in low sec and kept away from high sec. ------------------------------- C.D's Formula for success ------------------------------- Credit Card = Game Time Card Gametime Card = ISK Therefore Credit Card = ISK.

I think CCP should kick pirates out into 0.0 with the alliance wars, let them make their ISK off alliance miners and see how long they live. 0.1 - > 1.0 should be a no pew pew zone.

a lot of them have gone to 0.0 where the most targets are i'm afraid but trust me there are still plenty about low sec if u go to busy systems.
trouble is so many blobs about and ppl playing lame ass bait tricks that pirates are a lot more cautious these days.

We're also around, and we're not afraid of being outlaw. However, low sec isnt very profitable, and alot of ISK lies on the gates, or by fighting other Pirates.
Low sec needs a serious carebear boost - without nerfing piracy, but by encouraging both.

imo that didn't affect very much. it's the amount of targets that are low not the amount of target u can tackle.
low sec isn't profitable for carebears. you only get a little more isk from ratting in low sec than a .5 and there is a big increase in 0.0 so if most ppl want to take the risk in npc'ing they may as well go to 0.0. it's a lot safer if ur careful than low sec imo.
boost npc bounties in low sec and make some nicer ores for miners and win

Pirates are all around you. You're just too simple to know that they're there.
When morons show up with 20+ man gank squads on the other side of the gate, waiting for a pirate to undock and aggro the lone scout you've sent in to bait the solo pirate, the pirates arn't going to come out and play.
We simply wait for high value targets to make a mistake, and then we kill them.
I've seen two or three Cyrene gank squads in the past few weeks, flying around, hiding on the high sec side of various gates, while their recon/cov ops pilots fly in to scout systems looking for pirates.
The pirates are there. It's just that you're not smart enough to get them to fall for your simple tactics. Most of my corp is -10, at least our mains are. But frankly sec status has little to do with who is/isn't a pirate in my book. It's more a state of mind, and proven by the history of your actions, not your sec status.
All too often anti-pirates don't fight simply because they're worried about losing some tiny bit of sec status, or more often, are worried about not having the gate guns on their side for protection when they're humping the station or gate for protection.
I've yet to meet an antipirate that wasn't a complete *****.

20v20 isn't laggy. 100v100 is laggy. You can go to -1.99 before you're not allowed in 1.0 (if you were a pirate, you'd know these things lol). And as for gate tactics, I never said that pirates didn't use similar tactics.
What I did say is that the pirates are there. You just can't find them to gank them because they see you coming from a mile away. You don't try to take out four pirates with four ships. You try and kill one ship with twenty. (You referring to your alliance).
Killing pirates (or anyone for that matter) requires stealth. Stealth in the form of small, unassuming gangs. Not mini-fleets.

Really? because in my gang of four, just yesterday, I didn't find a single target after two hours worth of hunting. It has nothing to do with numbers, it just seems like Placid is empty. Murder already pointed out why that's the case. Giving you a gank isn't good for business. It's not because some random pirate is scared of you or afraid of a proper fight, it's because pirates live entirely off knowing what the are and are not capable of engaging successfully.
And by the way, I rule you.

Let me have your babies.
Really? because in my gang of four, just yesterday, I didn't find a single target after two hours worth of hunting. It has nothing to do with numbers, it just seems like Placid is empty. Though, today it has been much more active. At least in Aulbres.
Murder already pointed out why that's the case. Giving you a gank isn't good for business. It's not because some random pirate is scared of you or afraid of a proper fight, it's because pirates live entirely off knowing what the are and are not capable of engaging successfully.

im one of the poor saps that still tries to belt hunt solo
to be quite frank the number of people that dock/safe/logoffski the second im in system annoys the living hell out of me to the point that even with extremely fast and skilled use of the scanner - i cant catch the buggers in time with a cruiser, and with a frig its 50/50 at best (and im usually catchigna crusier or a ship i cant chew doing so)
which leaves me drifting around in a battleship, camping stations and gates as i move
so much less fun Yarrr sig nerf Thanks, Hango Hango touched me in the night I also stole all of your socks. He gave me the clean ones. -Rauth-he lied |

Yeah, and I'm always on around downtime when lowsec is nearly always deserted. You adapt though and work out where's good hunting.
High sec and can flipping is good for a bit of relief if you can't find anyone too.

That's right, lo-sec Placid is empty. It is DEFINITELY not worthwhile for the Cyrene Blob to patrol it...

First off, there is no such thing as 'real pirates' there are just pirates. There is no right or wrong way to pirate either.
Any carebear that goes 'cry me a river' when pirates explain (not whine) that low sec is empty and no longer worth your while should jump in a frig and go pirate in low sec, and walk a mile in the pirates shoes. You think we have it easy, ganking here and there at will, well try it for yourself, you never know you might enjoy it. I don't think many pirates are looking for special privileges, but until you've experienced piracy first hand only then will you truly understand.
And you mrsg33k, have absolutely no idea of what is piracy and how a pirate lives day to day.

More real pirates:
I must say, it was a good fight. That Domi had completely killed my cap. I had to baby my rep and guns, and in the end had to turn off all my guns completely. And just sit and let the drones kill him off.
I will say this: nothing beats a Neutron setup for blaster ships. I was using Ions on this particular Mega, and it just didn't do enough DPS with the new supertanks created by rigs etc.

Hmmm... Must be a regional thing.
Piracy in the area I'm living in, which is next door to yours, is thriving. Kills a-plenty, lots of action, juicy loot and good ransoms. Every belt is a banquet. Every system a feast.
I don't know what brought about this change in EVE for me, cuz a month ago, I was about ready to declare piracy/pvp dead by headshot. I do suspect it has something to do with the way people fly though.
The piracy act, and to some extent solo pvp, is like love, baby. It's that chance meeting between strangers - but it's all about timing if you wanna see sparks fly. If you're afraid of the encounter, or if you fear losing what you're flying in, it's not gonna happen... but if you're too aggressive, it won't happen either.
You gotta woo them - and I'm not talking about hitting them with a chinese phone book here. Show them that you're interested (warp in and out, get closer and move away), but also let them understand that you don't necessarily go all the way on a first date (avoid the gangbangs)... It's flirting, really. Only with ships and guns.
INFOD dancing lessons taught me that.

good targets (non bait/blob) are just hard to come by in some areas, people relise after a while its safer by far to travel with friends, or wait till the system goes quiet before traveling through/ratting.

i just skimmed the topic, but I wanted to add something. (excuse any arrogance)
I used to be a pirate.... hit -9.0 i beleive. But now it seems like everytime i warp into a belt or whatnot, 10 seconds later 4 blackbirds, 4 celestis's, and 15 caracals/ nos fitted ships come and and shank that living daylight out of me, and anyone else who is with me. after a few experiences with this, I promptly joined a 0.0 alliance to make isk and escape that crap. I sometimes enter low sec and try to arrange fair 1v1's but it seems (I wonder why) that no one wants to trust me. pity. obviously blobs and ganks are something i cannot change but from a pirate's perspective this is why I dont bother with the hurricane sitting in belt 1-1 in aunenen anymore.

Well firstly, I remember this question in this forum 2 years ago.
I think the lack of "belt" mining targets in low sec is due the fact....who wants to risk mining garbage? Even if you're in 0.0 mining ark or whatever its not as rewarding as it used to be. You can make a fortune NPCing, or running missions.
Its the change of the game....and CCP's lack of vision with "Economy" and "Marketing". They used to have a handle on this but it dwindling down to nothing.
CCP introduced all these new regions and filled them full of drones which drop stuff to be refined into high end minerals. Wow....rocket science. Which would be awesome if said minerals had to be hauled to empire "the old way", but now they can be jump shipped with capitals. Brilliant!!!
But yes...there are some pirates around with -10.0 mostly around LoneTrek with my travels, and yes they are cunningly finding new ways to adapt to a world that is driving them to extinction.

The issues in 0.4-0.1 have increased a lot since X. No agruements there at all.
To say there are no targets in low security (0.0 included) is pretty ignorant. There are numbers of corps and alliances that NPC and mine in low security (0.0 included) daily. Just so many fail to take the extra step to get that loot. Then you ponder up some excuse on why there is no ôrealö pirates in low security.
Lots of targets out there. ;)
