Why not put openable window that will be accessed with button on ship control unit, like all those buttons for cargo/scanner/overlay. Just add drone button and it pops out a small menu and UI with your drones on top of the ship interface. You can move it around and resize if you really wish.
Whats bad in it? It wont take any calculations as window is already there, just need to move it. ---

Well heat is good, but making UI doesnt need any kind of long coding work like heat had. Just delay Rev 2 by maybe month and get UI cooked imo... ---

Oh and for pirating drones are almost useless as well. You cant gate gank with drone boats, drones get slaughtered before you even let em shoot at target. ---

At least they did mention in path notes that they done at least something to drone issues:

- Fighters and Drones will now use their MWD to return to the ship correctly. - Fighters will correctly follow the carrier into and through warp. - When delegating fighters, the drone UI will now automatically resize. - When jumping out of a system where you had fighters assigned to you, the drone UI will now auto update to reflect that you no longer have your wingmen. - Work has been done to reduce the lag effects experienced when issuing commands to drones using the UI. Also, launching/retrieving drones should not suffer from as much lag now. - Fighters engaging Starbase structures will now follow their controller into warp rather than staying and continuing to fight. Note, they will stay and fight until ordered otherwise.
If lag really was solved, then I hope they keep up good work. ---
