Edited by: Tyreal Magnus on 11/06/2007 19:55:47 Edited by: Tyreal Magnus on 11/06/2007 19:55:06 I just started playing eve last month. I was introduced to the game by my friend. (he will remain nameless for his protection). I have known this guys since i was in high school so we are quite good pals in real life.
He has been playing for 2 years and has just over 6 million skill points. I have a month under my belt and just under 2.2 million sp. This friend plays eve for the fun of big shiny ships and pew pew laser beams. His game play consists of 3 weeks of farming and 20 minutes of flying around in a new battle ship only to be poped soon after. I on the other hand consider myself a more serious gamer and play for the things that make eve fun yarr. Basicly i could sell him donkney **** if i made it sparkly and put shiny lights around it.
Getting to the point my friend has no idea what he is doing in this game... he basicly farms up crazy cash and then gets blown up soon after. I am no eve sage but i have done my reading and run the tutorials.. i know how to set up my overview, trained learning skills, etc... (And trust me i have tried to help him... you cant teach an old dog new tricks)
To make things worse this guy is all about the smack talk. When i am in system with him after he tries to outrun a gate camp in his hauler... "oh yeah i can make it i have 2 wcs! no worries mater!". With in 5 minutes local becomes "You ****ers just wait my carrier is on the way" "My titan is at your base now!!!111" "Im going to hack you in real life" He makes himeself look like a complete idiot. Im usally in the system with him at the time too. Not much i can do but keep my mouth shut and apologize for him after he logs off. He thinks he is getting those pirates by *****ing at them and yelling and screaming. He is in fact giving them what they want. In the real world however he is pretty tame... Im the one that causes bar fights! He only goes nuts in game and it drives me insane!
Please tell me i am not the only one in this situation! Tell me about your annoying friends so we can start a support group! I like to burn things :P |

I think he was playing on and off for those 2 years... he was untill i told him otherwise training skills only as he needed them. ie "i want that gun" then he would train up for it and once complete leave his skills for a week or two untill the next flashy item caught his eye I like to burn things :P |

Right...wow...damn, dont suspose he considered that if he bothered to keep training he could have capital shiny things?
Well...tbh I would let him continue what hes doing, if it makes him happy then all the best to him I guess? Just get on with what you enjoy and dont worry about him --------- Its just a game. Get over yourselfs. www.eve-tribune.com Dont get too excited now.

Such mates can get you shot down in pretty mild engagements if you fly too much with them.
No offence, but if doesnt like to play the game your way(the normal way), you can just join other corp/alliance go to other region and etc. If you want to deny him from following just find a corp that tkaes you on trial to check you out first. If thats normal corp, he wont make it in.
As for rl and ingame behaviour...thats pretty clear that some people, ofc I cant judge on particular matter, but some people feel to 'get off' ingames when they are holding everything inside during the day. Its like if someone would do same in rl hed just shout '%^%#&%&$%' to some driver who took his parking place and etc. Thats purely normal behaviour even tho can be unpleasant in games like EVE where your public image also plays certain role. ---

I can honestly say i don't have any friends like that. He sounds pretty annoying tbh.
Try talking to him. it'll be hard for him to listen to you considering he's played so much longer. I find his low sp count amazing. the smacktalk is something that is common among players that don't get much action. ppl who pvp once a month or something are often so pumped after something as trivial as escaping a gatecamp that they feel the urge to talk crap in local.
I'd say give him a good slap

Wow, just seriously, wow...
He does not play the game like you would expect... as i said training is something he does on demand. He sees a shiny item and trains for it. He then enjoys it whilst not training anything else.
And i have talked him on many occasions... he will not change. He is like this in almost every other game we paly. He will not do any research / follow instructions / read tutorials
He has fun that way... some how. I am wondering if you guys have any one else like that. I like to burn things :P |

now that you mention it, I have had friends a bit like that.
I seem a lot like you, when I am not playing the game I am researching it so that I can "catch-up" as much as possible with the vets. I have friends who are quite happy to bumble about at their own pace doing everything "wrong", but having a great time.
At the end of the day, they pay for the game just like I do and if they are enjoying themselves then I won't stop them. I will just call them a noob whenever I get a chance to.

I play to have fun above all else! However i am also not a moron... i do not see myself enjoying the game if i lose everything i own every 3 weeks. So i do research into what i am doing. That is just the person i am. When i got my first car i spent weeks looking around and learning. I bought an effcient car.. but something the fairer sex would desire So basicly i balance my "Cookie-Cutterness" with my fun.
It depends on the person you are... though maybe its true what they say... Ignorance is bliss!

Sounds like my friend. I provide the isk, advice, support.
She ignores the advice, pretends that I don't give her isk, and decides not to login for the support.
She also loves to smack (to the point at which we are very limited on corp selections even though I'm a mothership pilot)

Ditch that zero and get with the hero... or something (and no if you're too young to have seen that epic film then I can't help ya m8.) In all honesty, friends are friends and eve is eve. You're not going to be playing this game in ten years but if you're really lucky you will have this person as a friend.
The way people are in real life has nothing to do with the persona they choose to perpetrate on Eve (or the Internet as a whole.) I know a lot of people who act like Barney Badarse in the game but if you get to know them as people they turn out to be some of the most compassionate folks you'll ever meet. It's all about the playstyle that people want to adapt. I prefer to play as close personality-wise to my real life self as I can get (except for the obvious sex and gender thang, but I did buy this char after all - and the lady avatars in this game are much much much more easy on the ol' eyes.) What I mean to say is, I'm just as stubborn and outspoken about things in the real world as I am in-game. I like to play as my real self because it means I don't have to feel bad if I forget to switch "into character" if I've had a few too many. "Into character" for me is me - period.
To each their own. Don't admonish your friend for playing the way he does. It's a game - why bum him out? Just be there for him if he has questions and join a different corp. Maybe even move to the other end of the universe if you're that annoyed by his in-game persona. That's what I'd do - don't let it affect the friendship at all. It's just a game after all. --

I used to have my brother playing this game earlier in my eve career. He is not very good at games that require some thinking and strategy so he always asked me questions about very simple things. It got very annoying after a while and he soon realized that it was not the game for him.

I've helped out a lot of players of varying capabilities and note that you don't have to be a genius to play (but it would help). The most annoying player is the one who doesn't listen to any advice.
Devian "Don't fly a factioned hac into pvp if you've never pvped before." Mate "My hac got blown up at a gate in 0.5 while I was afk." Devian "You were at war." Mate "Oh I didn't realise that they could shoot you in high sec."
He played for 6 months longer than me and had trained a lot skills and made plenty of isk but he'd never bother to play eve. His first pvp he lost a faction fitted cerb and a head full of +4 implants.
It's frustrating as he never took any advice from me and then left the game. I heard that Coalition Of Carebear Killers lost 3 cap ships to carebears |

Yes perhaps
but honestly he might have my account info.. we know enough about each other to commit much worse acts... social secruity numbers bank info etc. I would not put it past him going into my account to burrow isk.
And the whole pointof this thread was to find out other horror stories of annoying friends! Oh well thanks for the advice guys, im going to stick with him in game as he is my friend. Im wroking on him and eventully i might get rid of the smack... he has givin in to reason and started following forum set ups and reading about how to play (he is reading about it i dont think he is really digesting the material though he is still armor and shield tanking his abbadon with heavy beams.)
p.s. dear god i hope he does not find this thread i probally should not have pointed out the forum location

This is a friend of mine, he trains the skills, makes isk, and never flies, just looks at them in the hangar, or just runs missions occaisionally.

Yes I have a friend like this and I'm posting with an alt just in case he reads this.
He doesn't sound as bad as your friend but he still couldn't pvp his way out of a paper bag and just doesn't 'get' it in any game hes played.
Its kinda cute, but missions are hard enough for him, I wouldn't even dream of pvping with him.

yeah, the guys who don't listen and think they know best are by far far the worst. No ay to get through to them until they get into a painful situation and then everyone else around is to blame that they didn't listen. It is ok to be new, it is ok to be stupid because not everyone is the birghtest player out there, but if they are stubborn and stupid that just gets so painful for them and everyone else around.

You should leave your friend to play his EVE and then play your own EVE. Tell him why, nothing else would be fair.
For over a year now I have been driving to school in car, I live close to a friend and always picks him up on the way. He loves MMOs just as much as I do, however he is too much carebear for this game (which is why he is playing WoW). Well, he got this friend in real, who is really friendly and such, and another one I could say the same about. One of the friends talk about how uber leet he is ALL the time in the game and the other one kept on begging for gold (reason: they were friends in real ofc). Of course my m8 got damn tired of waking around with one guy wwho told how much he could beat him up in a duel and one guy who wanted money and stuff all the time. In the end he changed server and told them why and I can tell you, nothing changed in real... Of course you cant change server here, but fly 10 jumps and the result will almost be the same.
Also people are not in a game as they are in real. Their role may even vary from toon to toon and atleast from game to game. In EVE I prey on the weak, (not complete nubs, but anyone who could potentially have tech 2 loot) and I steal ore (great smack sometimes ). Well, I do use these money to build ships and go out in low sec because I want to become a good PvPer, but I got one hell of a way still to get there.
I used to play SWG before Sony decided to suicide nerf-bomb it (CCP please learn from here before you buy that new spiked nerfbat. I was rebel, one of the richest on the server and I spend most of my time helping people. I never griefed people I never smacked, I always went into a battle I was sure to loose, because if I could save another rebel or atleast make an imperial guy die, my goal was forfilled. That "heroic" role was fun to play, however in EVE I guess it would be a lot of fun, except for the 99.9% of the time I would be grinding money for a new ship to be heroic in. So I decided to go the less friendly way.
I have fun both ways, and if your friend likes his way, let him, just dont allow him to command your way of playing, thats the day you will get bored and leave.
