There has been a lot of discussion on the forums about Hello Kitty Online recently. For this reason, I decided to do a little research on this subject to see if the arguments made on this forum to convert EVE into a more Hello Kitty Online-type game had any merit.
The Hello Kitty franchise comes from a Japanese company called Sanrio which started in 1960. Sanrio had net sales of 80 billion yen or 650 million dollars last year (link). Sanrio's President and CEO is Mr. Shintaro Tsuji. A few lines of Mr. Tsuji's message on the Sanrio website are listed below.
Originally by: Mr. Shintaro Tsuji, President and CEO of Sanrio
Good relationships and understanding between countries and people, and the notion of treating one another with respect, are increasingly believed to be the heart of happiness -- not just here, but around the world.
Our business puts importance on the spiritual side of things.
We make things which will help foster communication, we offer entertainment to add fun and fullness to everyday life, and we seek to help friendships flourish.
For those interested in this sort of thing, here is a 5 year chart of Sanrio stock prices (you may need to refresh the page to get the chart to show).
The online presence of Hello Kitty is Sanriotown, which recently had 2 million subscribers (link). As far as I can tell, Sanriotown will add the Hello Kitty Online game in December, 2007 (link).
A review of the game is below.
Originally by: Boing Boing Hello Kitty online multiplayer game
Sanrio have launched a Hello Kitty massively multiplayer online game. The cuteness factor here is fantastic -- somewhere between genuinely and sickeningly fascinating:
Hello Kitty World will allow thousands of players to live and participate in Hello Kitty's magical and cute online world. You will be able to roam the streets of Kitty Kingdom, XO Federation, and Melody-land. Enjoy the beautiful landscape and architecture of Puroland or Badtzcity and participate in numerous puzzles, story lines, or adventures lead by the worldwide community of Hello Kitty World subscribers. You can even have a successful career, open different shops, earn and spend Sanrio Dollars in your bank, buy a house, and trade with other players around the vast game world.
Other than hundreds of choices for you to build your dream house and lovely player characters, Hello Kitty World players will also be able to raise pets and teach them special tricks and skills. Players will be able to cooperate and interact with other players to overcome a joint quest or challenge other friends to a friendly duel.
You will be able to make new friends through special in-game telepathy as well as interact with other gamers through a variety of community channels and forums. Share the exciting world of Hello Kitty World and spread the message of love with both your old friends and the new ones you have just met in the Hello Kitty World.
Sanrio have a winning business model and CCP might be able to learn a thing or two from it. I look forward to being able to "spread the message of love" in EVE very soon. |

So, explain to me again what CCP is supposed to learn about running an MMO from a company who's MMO has yet to be launched and nobody has any idea yet how it's run or if it's successful or not other than the concept of happiness.

There have been a few questions about PVP in Hello Kitty Online. Like a lot of successful MMOGs, Hello Kitty Online will have a consensual PVP system.
Originally by: Hello Kitty Online Game Introduction Page Players will be able to cooperate and interact with other players to overcome a joint quest or challenge other friends to a friendly duel.
In 2003 a hamster named Kuririn and his girlfriend Sakura moved into the Sanrio developers' office ( Kuririn and Sakura). These hamsters inspired the devs to create a series of animated blogs called "Kuririn Diary." In particular, episode #67 of the Kuririn Diary addresses PVP in space games. |

So, once upon a time there were hamsters. They fought. The end?
Sounds exactly like EVE to me...

But will I be able to kill the other players in hello kitty. Where is the Pvp aspect? Where's the Violence?
See, one of the reasons I like EVE more than WoW is because in WoW, I couldn't kill my fellow Allaince members (I had a hunter for farming, and a warlock for pvp), who I often wanted to kill more than the Horde players. I couldn't understand the Horde players, and they were generally a more decent, sharing lot than the idiot night elf hunter farmers that would ask me questions in something not resembling a european language, and then curse at me for killing their farming spot in something less than stellar WoW "english." (If a WoW player thought it was bad english, then you know it's bad english)
Sometimes people just need violence. Minus gardening, kite flying, and distance biking, everything I do and revolve my life around includes, or leads to, violence. Violence is good, and it solves problems (if only temporarily, but then you can apply more violence!!). And I take it back, distance biking is violent, I'm commiting violence against myself, as I strive to find the pain of exhaustion. Other hobbies include paintball, hunting (squirrels, pigeons, and deer must die), snowboarding, some offroad biking, and Real Time Strategies (where I employ the 'Zerg' rush, regardless of the game's name). There's nothing quite like the relaxing calm you get from sending hundreds of digital soldiers to their doom for no other reason than "You could."
So what is it that CCP can learn from Hello Kitty (I hope not how to set up a pvp game) ~~~ Post Morsa Victoria ~~~

Some have wondered, "What can we learn from the Hello Kitty weltanschauung?" I have been having a hard time putting the most important teachings into words because they involve emotions that the written language cannot express.
But don't be disappointed, I have found a short video, linked below, that perfectly communicates these lessons.
