when i first convinced my dad to try eve he tried many characters but finally settled on a female avatar...
because there were too many men in minmatar space

To be honest, how would I know anyway? I cannot remember seeing a gf's birth certificate or medical records. I certainly wouldn't have the first idea how to perform a cell biopsy so in truth I just took it on faith that if it looks, feels and registers with the other senses in manners normally associated with a woman then it's a woman.

I've answered to that question in the past at least 5 times I think.
If I watch a tv series or a movie, there are often characters/roles that I like. Sometimes they are males, sometimes they are females.
My characters are something like a movie character. The only difference is that my imagination decides about his/her personality and what he/she does. ( And if it's a game with guns or bad-ass magic: I like hot chicks with guns/power. It's kind of sexy.  )
I've just been wondering, why people ask this so often.
The real question is: 'Why shouldn't I play a female char ?' 
Some ppl think the internet is one big dating show and nothing else. And they have to be absolutely sure their harrashment tells are going to the right gender or they're scarred for life.

I normally only ever play male characters, but I broke that rule with my Achura alt, simply because the male character is so ugly, it's farcical.

I figured why not.
When I play games I don't want to identify with rl.
I played a troll in daoc, an orc in wow, and a female asian in eve.
I never log on and am like IT IS I, <my real name>, WHO WANTS TO CYBER?
Luckily though my avatar depicts what I imagine a professional female battlecruiser commander would look like, and my ID doesn't sound feminine at all. (or human for that matter)

Okay first off this is not just with EVE...all games have men playing as women, well not necesarilly playing as women just their avatars are female.
Also it is not homosexual, in fact if your comfortable with your alignment than you can do anything, infact if it bothers you than someone must be having denial thoughts eh?
Oh and yes in one game, not eve, I created a female character, pretended to be female, avoided voice chat and got free stuff than left. I win.
^Not proud of it but was funny.
