Achura/Khanid males take too much trouble tweaking to look non-fugly. And those bloodlines are arguably the best choices you can pick, attribute-points-wise. Besides, don't think of your avatar as "you", but rather "your minion you mind-control to do your bidding". Some people choose how they look for roleplay (like, in game you dirty people) purposes, other people like playing a female character for aesthetic reasons. Even if they are men or women. I know one bloke who'll only EVER play female characters in MMORPGs, because "whose backside would you rather be looking at all day?"

Although some males play females for RP reasons, I'd guess that many in this game play females because, with a few exceptions, the male versions of any given race are rather freakish, while the females are almost always attractive.

When I was playing WoW I had about half and half male and female characters. The one character who always (and I mean always) got hit on in-game was my female gnome. Seriously. I jumped into a boat one time to get out of the water and this dwarf who was sitting in it started demanding a kiss for the use of 'his' boat (it was just part of the scenery)
I briefly wished it was a game with eve-style pvp so I could kill him where he sat, then just left. Seriously, if you think a few men with female avatars is weird then you have no idea.
Another time someone sent me a tell containing, in its entirety "Hello, my sexy gnome". Ick! ----- English is a complex language. Use it as best you can. |

That would be about the standard definition aye. Are you heading towards some sort of point with this in the near future? So far you've related your OP to tansgendered men and homosexuality, skirting around the suggestion that there's something questionable about both those - are you suggesting that men choosing a female avatar in a game are acting out real life preferences? Or are you just meandering through your own prejudices in the hope that someone else will voice them for you? I notice you haven't shown any interest in the women who choose male avatars for instance - any reason for that?

Erm, anyway, nothing wrong with men playing women, and IMO, nothing wrong with men hitting on men playing women either. Its a game, infact, its a role playing game. And, if you don't like the way someone is talking to you then you can always block him from the chat and pod kill him.

Edited by: Atienne on 17/06/2007 12:16:32 My character is female because i once saw "The beatch" and found the french girl really hot so i wanted to make her my avatar (that was for anarchy online)
i later saw the movie again and found out that it was the name of the french guy and it was spelled Etienne.. not Atienne...
so much confusion! :D plus i created my character in a state of aesthetic absence so she's butt ugly :D but i manage because i really dont give a s**t about that picture.. though i wish i could change it to something i could relate to, i.e. paint it myself.
EDIT: bottom line.. i like the name and thought it was a female name... hence the female character.

It bothers me more that it bothers you that male players have female avatars than the fact that there are lots of male players with female avatars.
A liddl tip: don't cyber anything that you aren't sure what gender they REALLY are.
Anyway, the fact that probably more than 70% of the females are male IRL makes the REAL females sexier. I have heard some really scary stories from real-life-female-players who have been constantly harrassed by cyberers, if you want to date people go to a dating community, not EvE online.

In many other MMOGs men play girls, because the female characters have smaller hitboxes, which is good for classes with weak armor. But your signature radius doesn't get smaller if u play a female charakter in Eve.
So only one reason remains: Male characters in Eve are ugly as hell.
Guys playing girls are not homosexual, transexual or whatever. You could also ask, are players homosexual who are starring at the but of a male character all the time? Besides, there is nothing wrong with being homosexual or transexual. If you are homophobe, uptight and men playing women are irritating you, change your hobby.
For girls, it's also good that so many men play women, because it's easier to hide from annoying pick-up attempts.

As for women with male avatars: A female friend of mine played a male troll on wow, and let me tell you that troll was the most MALE troll you would ever meet, with the cheesiest pickup lines he would shout at anything female with, or without a pulse. She is enganged and expecting a child and a really sweet person, it was just a way for her to have fun :)

Honestly, I don't think about it much at all. Apparently you do. Why might that be? Insecurity? Curiosity?
Perhaps instead of thinking of video game avatars as something people play as, you might consider them as something people play with.
Which would you rather play with? A member of the same sex? Or a member of the opposite sex?

Well first off all I can say is we don't actually have avatars YET in this game. They are just pictures.
BUT
In another game I used to play there was a guild member who played a female and another guild member started hitting on the female avatar. Well it all came to a grinding halt when the players got on vent The male player with the male avatar ended up leaving the guild I am guessing do to embarrassment.
Now with the prevalence of VOIP it somewhat destroys the illusion of the avatar if you have a very low voice and try and play a women. RP wise.
What I do find funny is people that create names that can't be spoken and then they try to get on VOIP. And the first question people ask is how to pronounce your name. Now that can be funny at times.
BUT with 99 % of the EVE population NOT RPing does it really matter what gender a person plays,in most cases I am sure it is nothing more then a arbitrary decision. Now for those guys that RP and play females or the reverse then you MIGHT find something of interest why they choose the gender.

This question pops up once a week it seems and on all MMO forums worldwide...
Does it have to mean something? This character isnt me, its a character I play in a game, it doesnt have all that much to do with my IRL persona.
I'm not asian, why did I choose an asian character?
I didnt cry because I wanted to play an assassin in Diablo 2 but was afraid to play as a female character, its pixels and polygons in a game and not a freudian experiment gone wrong.

No, but my character is named after the love interest in the short story Day Million. He falls in love with a very feminine woman (albeit with a silky pelt and tail) who is genetically male. This makes it kinda hard for me to post negatively about trannies in this persona.

Not mentioned so far is the difference between two kinds of people. One kind of people are the ones who needs to feel identified with a character, be it in a movie, book or game, for various psychological reasons; the other doesn't have this need.
Thus, it should be obvious that the first group will never understand the choices that the second group does, or judge them erroneously.

No, attractive to me! Hello! Anyway, who said anything about attracting anyone? This is a playing piece in a game, not an effort for a hook-up. Some of my characters are male, some are female. They don't represent me, they just fly my imaginary spaceships. Anyway, I'd think I'd go with a male avatar if I was going to swing that way. Call me kooky, but I'm not sure I'd have much luck attracting a g*y male player with a female character.

Sometimes they are males, sometimes they are females. My characters are something like a movie character. The only difference is that my imagination decides about his/her personality and what he/she does. ( And if it's a game with guns and bad-ass magic: I like hot chicks with guns/power. It's kind of sexy. )
I've just been wondering, why people ask this so often. The real question is: 'Why shouldn't I play a female char ?' ___________ 'Only ships can be assembled, this is a Frigate.' |

To be honest, how would I know anyway? I cannot remember seeing a gf's birth certificate or medical records. I certainly wouldn't have the first idea how to perform a cell biopsy so in truth I just took it on faith that if it looks, feels and registers with the other senses in manners normally associated with a woman then it's a woman. ----- English is a complex language. It's been around since Dungeons & Dragons First Edition.
A majority of RPG players have same sex characters because it doesn't occur to them to do otherwise. A minority make the sex of their characters a choice like race or class because it doesn't occur to them to do otherwise. A smaller minority think people who play the opposite sex are perverts, and it doesn't occur to them that they might be a minority. The minority assume the smaller minority are mostly teenage boys suffering the usual teenage sexual hangups.
My attitude would be that someone who thinks that roleplaying an evil pirate is OK but roleplaying an evil pirate of the opposite sex is not does indeed have a problem.

Okay first off this is not just with EVE...all games have men playing as women, well not necesarilly playing as women just their avatars are female. Also it is not homosexual, in fact if your comfortable with your alignment than you can do anything, infact if it bothers you than someone must be having denial thoughts eh?
Oh and yes in one game, not eve, I created a female character, pretended to be female, avoided voice chat and got free stuff than left. I win. ^Not proud of it but was funny.

Let's exclude the skill point argument. After all in the long run you gain nothing more than the rest of the players.
But the avatar is you in many ways and not a minion. Even RP wise it's you not a mindless slave ffs.

I understand why males choose female avatars as poorly as I understand what the attraction to female action stars in films are.
I don't need my females super manly or kicking ass. I also don't mix sexuality with an MMO about space domination.
I plain don't understand anyone that could get anything out of looking at a mugshot of a digital female character. That hard up for females? Just alt-tab to **** sites while your playing.
I guess it doesn't really matter, people like weird freaky things. Just a reality I suppose.

How can a man play a woman? Acting! If you want the definitive answer to that one go see a Kabuki performance. All the female roles are played by men and have been for hundreds of years. The Onnagata (Something like "Female substitute") are a classical role; you train for. In the performance I saw some of those guys were so completely convincing that if it hadn't been for their faux female voices you wouldn't have known the difference. It's doable; it's just most guys don't do it well. Still it's no different then playing a cold-blooded killer, he-man hero or slimey weasel; it's just another character.
I resisted the concept for a long time; finally a friend of mine pestered me into doing it; to my shock I had a lot of fun playing the role and I never really was able to go back. I don't have a good reason why; I just have more fun with female characters. Since chick number 1 I gradually became the designated female player. I've played the all three of the stereotypes and a whole lot more; I've also written a ton of female characters in short stores etc. It can be a ton of fun to immerse yourself in a radically different mindset; if you think yourself into the role you may find yourself acting IC without thinking about it.
The down side is sexual harassment. If you want to see how the other half lives go to any other game; make a hot Avatar and get a taste of what women live with every day of their lives; it's an eye-opener. I knew one female player on COH who did the reverse and only played male characters purely for that reason.
All of that said I'll admit the biatch is the most fun stereotype to RP. Done right you can make all your corp mates roll with IC jokes. I've probably had more fun doing that then playing the actual game at times.

My posts come from my point of view. Obviously there is no such thing as cosmically/universally weird, only weird in relation to certain viewpoints.
Having differing view points from others has absolutely nothing to do with your level of comfort with your sexuality.
A man having sex with a goat, from my point of view, is weird gross and unimaginable. My views on this have nothing to do with wanting to have sex with a goat myself.
That is a weak fallible arguement people use. If someone hates chocolate, I don't accuse them of actually liking it deep down, and blaming that as the reason they claim to not like it.
Some people enjoy acting out being female, or get some sort of tangible satisfaction looking at digital female mugshots or whatever. Either way I don't understand it, that's all my post said, nothing more.

why does men play women in a game? Why does men play the hero in a Wargame? Why does men play millionaires in monopoly?
because men like to dream.
And since it's a game, they are allowed to.
I know men that play women cause they think its fun, i know women that play men cause they are not taken serious when having a female avatar.
I know people that play games, and go back to reality when they turn off the computer, I also know people that when they turn off the computer they go to msg boards and are angry with people that lied to them, betrayed them in to thinking they where something they where not, just to return an hour or two later to continue to play their dream on the net, while the others the one they shouted on and taking care of their wife and children in the real world.
im not one to judge anyone, but if people need to dream and escape reality for a little to better face the real world around them, why not let them.
Everyone need to dream about something once in a while, isn't that why you play games in the first place?

It's not really sexual actually.
At least not in the "get aroused by it" way. Personally, I like looking at women. Not primary because it can stimulate me sexually but simply because I enjoy it no matter in which mood I am. Like looking at a nice picture. Also, I do not mean only their backside and their boobies (not that I do not let my eyes wander now and then) but also their faces. Or shoulders. Or legs. A nice face is for me just as enjoyable to look at as a nice body.

That's all good. I don't put art or any pictures on my walls. Never felt the need to. Guess I just separate my visual and other needs differently than you do.
I wouldn't want to plaster girls faces on my guy friends so that they look like girls when we hang out. There are times when I look/do other things with girls and they fill a certain need, other times there are other things that occupy my attention other than how someones face looks, and that aspect doesn't even scratch at my awareness.

To be honest though.... straight, ***, trans., does it make any difference at all? It's just a game

"As for the homosexuality concerns, what is more homosexual, starin at a beatiful girls face all day or wanting to look at those brutor apes in leather suites?"
Just the fact that you could consider looking at male digital mug shots in a nerdy space video game as some sort of sexual experience seems somewhat fruity to me.
The I'm so comfortable with my sexuality that I can act like a homo argument makes no sense either. I am very comfortable with my sexuality, doesn't mean that I choose to walk around in dresses, and if I did, it would in no way validate how comfortable I am with being a straight man. It would just be an unfortuneate\rediculous (from MY view point, in case anyone forgets that this is inherent as this is MY post on a message board where people share thier OWN opinion and views on the game and life) choice of clothing.
Also as far as acting out being something your not. Why is a space captain not enough. Why the need to slip into a virtual bra, because you can't do it real life? Just because video games LET men be women doesn't really mean that that should be a logical choice of action.
It honestly doesn't bother me that men choose female avatars (at least it bothers me much less than an episode of Will & Grace, god that show sucks, I should make my own comedy of roommates that suck off their dogs, that would be on the same comical level, I mean hey, if I have to be tolerant of one thing completely disgusting to me then why not make everyone go the whole 9 yards of sexual deviation tolerance). I still don't understand the attraction and don't feel that it is an inevitable outcome of free choice in the matter.
This post is not meant to infer that men that choose female avatars are in any way homosexuals. The OP made no reference to homosexuality, but it was brought up first in a response to a simply stated question, insecurity anyone?

Oki, so I am one of the several RL females who play Eve and yes I have met several females...we do exist...and we are all ebil!!! ebil I say!!!
When I first created Galya Tuvern, being new to MMOs, I identified with her as myself. As soon as I got Kajsa Anka I began to feel differently about my characters and then I joined fleet and also got a male character--that was that; they became the interface that I used to interact with people IG as opposed to be seeing my chars as "me" per se.
When I was in D2 fleet, people would call me Kajsa on TS and it kinda shocked me at first... I was GALYA DAMMNIT!!! But through that experience I began to realize that there are two ways to play Eve (at least for me), RPG style like my friend "Zevrik" does in the Caldari Navy Reserve...OR like me (RL/RPG) showing my own RL self with a bit of "let's pretend I am in outer space really flying this paper thin Heretic around a hostile Nyx" OH NOOOOOES!
And why is it that no one laments the female who plays the male character...hmmm? Maybe because not many females play but it seems to me to be a gender biased question...why not ask "why is it that people play characters that do not reflect their RL gender?"
Given the nature of online gaming it is prudent to ask, if you really need to know, what someone's gender is in RL...either that or watch and notice what they say and how they identify with things...if they are RPGing and good at it...you likely will not be able to tell. But if they are, like most people that I have encountered, doing the RL/RPG thing you can usually tell.
If you are too shy to ask then you should probably assume they are all men no matter the avatar's gender. It's a sad state of gaming that this is true and in the future this might change and you pervs will have more RL females to hit on
Another prudent question might be, why does it matter and why does this bother you? Are you making judgments about people based on how they choose to portray themselves in Eve? If so perhaps a better question might be an introspective one that only you can answer.
Oh...and if you find a character making long winded posts that painfully attempt to be diplomatic (and using the forum as if it was their own personal blog spot)...you prolly got either a female or a lawyer/politician or both
Yes that was a JOKE!!!! Don't ask me I'm not the keeper of the Mommy Milk! |

I am a girl IRL and in Guild Wars, I play a male warrior, because I have a better chance to block your opponents (larger hitbox) and I am safe from annoying men picking on me. So I try to attract other females and therefore I am les bian !? 1980 called and wants this thread back.
Seriously, search or google. This topic comes up fairly often in this forum, and also has in every MMO forum since the dawn of MMOs. I personally remember this debate in the EQ beta discussion boards. Before that, people talked about it on the BBSs when the issue was men playing females in door games and on usenet regarding MUDs.
If I recall, several scholarly research papers have also been written on this, as well as at least a handfull of professional (e)magazine articles.
The consensus seems to be that a man that prefers looking at fake women is just homosexual. No, wait, not that, the consensus is that the only people who get offended by it are homophobes. Er, not that either, maybe it was a complex and pointless issue. Or maybe it was just the free stuff and attention that female (real or otherwise) seem to get.

women who play eve are normally smarter, as there are alot of things to learn and adapt to in eve. the girl i was talking about is VERY smart, and after 3 days of help, shes able to hand my *** to me... i think its cute, and she is georgous, you would never think of her as a gamer just by looks, but god how can you NOT like a girl gamer?? every girl ive ever dated couldnt understand 'sorry, i was helping my corp station camp 3 guys' lol, that just doesnt fly. eve isnt JUST a game, it becomes a second life, a second chance to be something you couldnt be in real life. you put in insane amounts of time and effort, especially eve, ive spent 13 hours on one station camp, had almost the entire corp locked down. it used to be 'omg you like a girl you met online, you dork' but with the more time we as humans spend on cyber space the more attached we get to our fellow players. true friendships and enemies are made, i know in navyfield quite a few people hated me, dont even know me, they just hated me because i spoke my mind, oh and have to love internet tough guys (LOL) 'ill blow your *** up bEo***' lol... but yea, even tho i havnt met this girl in real life (yet) i enjoy talking to her on aim and in game, shes a loyal friend, gives me advice, and when i need her in game shes there no questions asked, if thats not a true friend, i dont know what is...

I second the motion!
Male characters in this game are just not aesthetically appealing. Every time I open my character sheet I want to see a portrait that would be eye candy. It comes along with entertainment value of the game. I take hours to make my new characters and try to give them not only attractive but distinctive look as well as name. So happens that quite a few bloodlines in this game, no matter how hard I try to make the portrait I'd be happy with just don't work out. The bloodlines that don't work for me are commonly of male gender. The only two male bloodlines that do have the looks in EVE are Gallente and Intaki. Hence I got both female and male characters but more of female ones.
