It's 8 o'clock on the Pacific Coast and my Saturday nights usually don't get going until 10 or 11...until then EVE!

Originally by: Turbosi Nosral From the standpoint of a person just trying the game for the first time it's pretty pathetic. And seeing how this isn't an isolated issue I'll be hard pressed to come off my hard earned money for something that'll just irk me. Let me phrase it this way. If you bought a new car and it periodically died for no explanable reason would you be screaming at the dealership?!?! Damn straight you would. Sure they make hundreds of thousands cars every year so a few bad ones aren't a big deal. if CCP can't deliver a working package maybe they should rethink the cost to the user or develop a package that can deliver what they promise (or claim, tis the same to me)
Then go play WOW. You're an @!$@ [fill in as you wish]. You know nothing about this game. You drop in and just start complaining, acting like you suddenly know about ANYTHING about CCP, what they've created, the game's mechanics, what it takes to maintain a game like this, let alone initiate a very complex patch, and how the whole thing. You haven't earned the right to be so incensed. There are others here not whining as much as you when they're the ones who have lots of RL cash locked into this game, have built a real life for themselves in the virtual world, and have geat understanding of this MMO. So play the game for a year -- at least. Plop down a subscription for all that time. And accure some real knowledge and bond with other corpmates -- then you can talk like you do above.

Originally by: BigDave I have to say, I am impressed with CCP's response to this issue. Multiple devs posting updates in the wee hours of Sunday morning, ISD allowing players to discuss what is going on without censorship, updates being made to the client startup info window... this is customer service and I thank you for it. Even while losing skill training (hint: how about an emergency skill queue that only goes in effect if the servers were down at time of skill completion), I am happier for the unplanned outage for the opportunity to see that CCP wubs us.
Good work guys, I'm having a beer on your behalf!
PS Now that you've shown your improved crisis response plan, you can start the server up already... no, seriously, I've got skills to train!

Come on guys, cut CCP some slack, its 3 AM on a Sunday, there working as hard as they can. I don't know about the rest of you, but if it was me, in ICEland at 3 AM, I wouldn't get out of bed to fix the problem. I think the guys that got out of bed, and went into work to fix the problem are great, most companys would tell you that you have to wait till Monday.
Thanks Guys.
No, no slack at all. I pay to be here, and EVERY weekend its crashed for like 2 months now. As an adult, when do i have the most free time? the weekend. When do i get the most time on eve? the weekend
When does EVE always screw up? the weekend
Every single weekend for as far back as early spring, this friggin thing has tanked. WTF!?! Can you please stuff the new content in a box and ship it off to a dark place deep in the Congo and NOT EVER THINK OF DOING ANYTHING ELSE TILL YOU FIX YOUR JUNK

god.. since my last post, i couldnt read the posts fast enough to keep up with the pages. anywho, thanks for responding to my stupidity on the time conversion. with all the help, i have come to find out that i am 4 hours behind this GMT thingy. as it being 11:09pm here, and they are calling for 3:25am GMT server restart, it helps now that i have a reference.
thanks all.

I am dreadfully sorry for the inconvenience this has caused!

Would you guys for once get the time right, that would be 3:30am GMT, CLOCKS HAVE CHANGED.
no, GMT time never changes....
Well then, since the servers are in the UK, announce that its going to start at 3:30BST! Therefore that would be relevant since we are now in BST and no longer GMT
no, there are other people in the world that connect to the server which is the reason we use a time that does not change ......when it's online that is
I feel bad for you guys. The amount of crap you take from the ignorant asshats and whiners on this forum are unreal.
I'll say thanks for your hard work, Sharkbait. I know it's not fun being called in or being on call and how much it can put a damper on your day

If only I had time to finish that mission and put on a longer skill :/
PS: Restart Failure kinda blows :(
PPS: I agree that server failure during US Sat. night prime time is a major problem, hopefully they'll add some sa***uards to prevent it from happening again, but from now on I'll make sure on friday to train a skill that will last past the weekend!
Lets hope the new server reboot works!

We're scrambling to deal with the consequences of our systems being all ^&%$#ed up by Rev II already. CCP, I understand stuff happens, but we have more important things to do than waste hours watching you push the Est. restart time back in 15 minute increments. If you don't have a clue, say so.

We've sorted out the issues that affected us on the the 1st startup attempt and we are starting the cluster again.

These guys run the largest Microsoft SQL server cluster in the world, with the largest MMORPG datacenter in the world with the most complex cluster farm in the world.
On what are you comparing these guys? They are unique in what they have created. Compare EVE's stability to other MMORPG games out there that are half as complex and you will find that CCP is doing a better job than anyone else.
At least they are actively letting us know that they are working on the issue, not waiting 2 days before acknowleging that there is an issue, like other companies out there (SOE comes to mind right off the top).
Cut them some slack, it's frustrating, but remember, it's just a game.
that's correct, largest SQL sever in the world, what you failed to mention is the SQL framework is not designed to handle such a load of data, perhaps, if they are having database instability, they should steer themselves away from MS products, like most serious programmers
Please note, this is not a flame on the devs, they work hard, and for the most part, succeed in their efforts.
I underestand what you are saying. Though I'd have questions about MySQL, Postgre SQL, or Oracle doing any better. I'm no Microsoft fan- in fact I'm a totally FOSS shop, 95% RHE4 and now some RHE5.
I just wonder about managing the backend for a cluster like this. That's a whole can of worms with issues I'd love to have the opportunity to work on.
I hate MS SQL. I think it sucks, scales badly, ... jeez I could go on. But I'm not sure the others would do better on *this scale*. Most supercomputers that seem to get the comparison to EVE don;t do these kinds of database operations. They crunch numbers.
There's a big difference.

So, Ganre, when you say 'perhaps', are you speaking from a position of knowledge or complete ignorance.?. I mean, I work with large databases all day long and I wouldn't presume to judge whether the Eve DB infrastructure is borked. It's interesting that I'm not a 'serious programmer'. My division of the large financial institution has to handle time-sensitive information and if we're late in getting data out, we can be fined on the order of hundreds of thousands of dollars for every day we're late. Not sure what you're considering 'serious'. I, personally, find it hard to take you seriously. Tell us, honestly, which databases you've worked with, for how long, and for which levels of 'seriousness'.
as to my experience, i have never needed to work with any DB that MS ACCESS couldn't handle, and you need to define large when you say large, how much Data is in the DB, and how often is that data accessed and changed? with that taken into account, also realize that MS software is infamous for failing under heavy load, and riddle with bugs, patches rarely acually fix an issue, but instead avert the problem.(also i work front end on the DB that runs my pet MUD, but have never had any trouble with it, and it's SQL)
