Edited by: Bob Entropy on 24/06/2007 02:30:24 heh, GMT is easy to calculate. doubleclick the clock in the taskbar and change your timezone. only hitch is if you're on daylight-savings-time. then you're still an hour off. personally i baught a super cheap clock and painted the eve logo over the face. set it to GMT naturally. hint hint CCP sell EVE clocks in the store. send my royalties in the form of isk.

oooh no the server is down for less than an hour (assuming it's up by the estimated time) remain calm. I'm anxious to play but it takes as long as it takes. Count the number of hours the server is up vs the few times it gets taken down during prime time. I think server up time is > 95%. Just accounting for normal downtime per day the server is up 23 out of every 24 hours or 95.8333%...
Anyone out there know what the unscheduled downtimes were since the expansion deployed and then we can have a precise calculation? The answer to this question should hopefully put an end to the reimbursement for downtime queries.

A pain i know but its easier for players world wide to work out the time by general GMT then the UK time.
GMT is the reference point of all clocks in the world!!! (Granted it's probably shifting to UTC) but GMT does not mean ENGLAND or LONDTON, it means GMT.. Just so you know, London is currently 1 hour ahead of GMT.

What a bought when Walking in Stations comes/Ambulation?
So many more people will want to play this game, and I can understand the game going down, but is it worth it?
And letĘs say we are Ambulating in a station, will we get booted out when the space part goes down?
One more thing, the type of players who will join because of walking in stations are not likely to stick around too long if these problems keep happening.
Either that or hold back on patches for once every 3 months, it does not seem to be worth all the lag and getting booted out problems.
And now there is Garbled sound issues after this last update, this kinda stinks.

If you can find another game that requires the technology and innovation to have everyone on ONE server in a gameworld this huge that is always stable then go play it. There is a reason other companies don't take on massive projects like this, the hiccups should be expected, EVE is the first of its kind.
true but is it ok to add stuff ,more stuff and more stuff to a already bugged game ? shouldnt they fix some of them first and then add stuff?
What is a "bugged" game exactly? "Bug Free Software" is a farce, there is no such thing. Frankly the disconnect between the software industry and the general populace is astounding. A software company builds, tests, builds, tests until they reach a goal -- this goal is called an acceptable defect rate (ADR). Essentially the software is "done" when they have determined there are x critical, x serious, x minor and x annoying bugs in the piece of software. The numbers vary based on the size and complexity of the software. Eve being on the high-end of that complexity scale. If a company such as CCP waited until the software was "bug free" to add more content, they never would get there, people would get bored and leave, company would go out of business. Not a great idea. In their eyes they have "fixed some of it". Their definition of what is an acceptable defect rate is just different than yours.

How fortunate that they dont take lag or downtime into account when they measure the systems for the top 500 list.

You are right...
CCP hosts the largest cluster I am aware of outside of academia. And with 30,000 concurrent clients. It's amazing- and even more so because I'm in the tech business and know the scale of what they have done.
I'd prefer they were more stable... but in reality they do pretty well.

Yup... I figured you would probably have ranking among them.
One of these days I hope you folks publish a paper (not basics) on how you pulled it off (Specifically the network traffic issues).
For instance, you are the *only* cluster/super computer I can think of that can support 30k UDP connections, and all that is entailed in that. The demands on TCP/IP/UDP alone simply boggle my mind. I'm a total ISO model junky... I live and breath it as an edge security guy (I dream packets man!!). But in your case it's not 30k connection as an ISP from/to separate servers and clients, you are centralizing everything to one cluster.
How on earth do you aggregate that traffic into a cluster? I mean the routing requirements for that much packet redirection has to be astounding. I can see how systems like WOW handle 3k connection per cluster.... but ten times that?
As far as I'm concerned if EVE is up for 5 minutes at a time you guys are geniuses. In addition to selling game time, you should offer a class on how to aggregate that much traffic to a single cluster.
I'm no 12 year old fanboi. I'm an engineer. I want to see the how-to published.
