I dont really agree with the original post though.
Eve is nice because there is something in there for everyone. If they made all ships symetrical, straight and beautiful id feel really awkward. Really no ships would look like they meant business if they were all slickriders. "Ugly" ships have their character too.
Im sure everyone can list a few ships they like the look of and thats the way it should be.

Love the look of the Armageddon, with 5 shoulder mounted guns, and probably the most sensible engine configuration on many ships (Thorax anyone?) There's a massive plate on the underside that looks like a housing for the drone bay
Punisher and Retribution look like bulldogs to me though, sleek at first, but porc'd out with guns, and they look pretty gnarly. Probably the least elegant ship I've seen would have to be the typhoon....looks like Oscar The Grouch's Space-faring Garbage Can

As another poster said ugly ships have their place. Unfortunatly some ships just look stupid. I hope with rev 3 they remodal as well as reskin some ships.
Ships like Rokh, Ferox, and drake are ugly but they look mean and in their own way cool. The moa/eagles is just stupid and goes against the of the utilitarian look of caldari ship design (it doesnt look like you'd expect a gunship to look like).
I wouldn't mind the caracal bulking up so it could actually be large enough to lanch heavy missiles. I like the wyvern concept for the shape, but it doesn't look quite right in game IMO.

Nothing prettier in this game than a Deimos or a Vigilant. Look good and kick ass while at it.

You know, I don't wish to knock the game too hard, but i must stress how right the thread starter is. Most of the ships in Eve are hideously ugly, and painful to look at. It stopped me from playing this game for years. I only gave it a try when a friend happened to show me some of the Amarr ship designs. Asymmetry only goes so far.. In Eve, it goes TOO far. |

The Rokh, Mega, Abaddon, and the Scorp look like great, but yes ships like the Domi, Tempest(especially that heap of newly coughed up hairball), and the Raven need to be remodeled. im not sure about the Hyperion yet, it looks badass, like a floating city with guns yet its not very pretty to look at; and i tihnk the guns would have looked cooler if they put them somewhere else, so that if u have a nos or something on there instead of 8 guns it didnt look like u got in a hit and run accident and one broke off so u left it behind.

Hmm the asymmetry is rather extreme, however it would balance out fine if it was shown to have a practical purpose. Shield systems, Weapon racks, missile bays, Electronic Warfare subsystems. Practicality. Asymmetry serves no purpose in an atmosphere, however in space it serves as optimal component placement.
eg - Drone bays - ever noticed the Vexors' Drone bays? <3 teh Vexor

The asymmetry of most Caldari ships wouldn't bother me so much if the thrusters were placed correctly given their apparent center of mass. However, that is not the case.
Oh, and the moa is the fugliest ship in the game, bar none.

I actually like the idea of the Typhoon, its like a sort of light escort carrier. It could use a total reskin though - the "new" Minmatar look could do wonders on that concept.

Ive grown to like it somewhat, looks chunky with some sort of thruster built in there.
Looks a little like a bird also which is what i think its supposed to be like.
Eagle looks pretty good i think also.
And raven i think is a great looking battleship, up to the little command deck i dont see why people let it gnaw away at them thinking the wings have to be symetrical.
Again tempest is one of the most characteristic ships in eve i would never forgive them if they changed it. I think it is the ship that looks the most like a pirate ship in eve. Sails and all.

The graphics update will probably cover any issue i have with ship looks right now though.

abaddon, apocalypse, armageddon, hyperion, megathron, Rokh, CNR, Rattlesnake, vindicator, mega fleet, Bhaalgorn, tempest fleet, maelstrom, scorpion, are all hot and sexy and thats just the battleships. add to that every capital ship ever, some people ***** about the giant shroom or the minmatarr oversized stick but can any of you honestly say you wouldnt dig flying those big titans ..... didnt think so
there are a ton of great looking ships in this game, and most of em even work good, granted the op is flying a giant turd with flys so I can feel the pain but there are plenty of other good ships out there, move to a hyp or mega and you should be alright

I'm not a trekkie, but looking at those ships made me kinda sad when I compared them to most Eve ships. I'm stuck with a domi for quite a while and... well it's ugly as hell. And it's not even Minmatar. If Amarr didn't blow I'd be piloting them for sure, cause at least they look decent.
Its not Startrek, infact Startrek is very old sci-fi movie when people prolly thought that each ship should be clean and perfectly shaped like a sports car.

Because obviously, aerodynamics are so important in space.
I honestly like the more 'industrial' feel of many of the EVE ships. (Granted, I've flown either Minmatar or Caldari my entire EVE career, only dabbling in the other two races every so often)
I guess I would say these alot of the ships are.. err.. 'realistic' to an extent? (in as far as this could ever be 'realistic') If I was going to spend $100 million worth of resources on a ship, I'd put every penny into making sure it kept me alive instead of looking sleek and cool.

I don't mind the assymetric looks of most of the ships although prefer the Amarr and later Minmatar ships. Even the Typhoon and Osprey look acceptable - the Osprey is an an mining platform/mobile repair dock and I can accept it looking clunky.
The one ship I truly find intolerable is the exequeror. Come on, not only is it assymetric, not only does it vary between an nasty snot green colour and a rusty gold depending on the lighting, but it looks like someone half melted it then sat on it.
This would be a useful ship - nice cargo hold, hislots. A real utility ship. With one of these a new player could slavage, mine, run lvl 2 comabt and courier missions all with one ship. It would also make a great after mission looter. But frankly hell will freeze over before I am seen in public flying this squashed frog of a ship.

Yes, it's not streamlined by any stretch of the imagination, but in space, who cares? Certainly not the Borg ;-)
It's symmetrical, which science tells us is important in deciding who has an attractive face, and who doesn't.
Finally, while opponents are wiping tears of laughter from thier eyes, I can open 1.5 billion isk of 'fugly' deadspace whoopass on them ;-)
