The Eurogamer.net reader review on this page gives EVE 1/10.
You might want to post your comments in the comment section under the review, to add a bit of balance !

Argh, I hate newbie reviews, grrrrrr. Yeah that's how PvP is done for sure.

Yes, the review is a load of rubbish. People need to post some comments to give the alternative point of view !

Chill people, that is some AO or SWG player making EVE look bad. EVE players do that too to other games (as confessed on the forums ) ______

Argh, I hate newbie reviews, grrrrrr. Yeah that's how PvP is done for sure.
Newbie reviews suck indeed. EVE is boring tough, mining is boring, NPC combat is boring, PvP is mildly interesting but tbh it's either ganking stuff or trying to fight someone. If challenged lots of people either run or come back and outnumber you 5 to 1 or some dump idiocy like that.
PvP in EVE takes skillpoints, a good ship and modules. Other than that, it's boring too. Too far between it IMO and too expensive if you die. I hav emyself gone back to playing Diablo II, mostly hardcore. Hardcore is a major challenge, especially with 1,10.
Face it, EVE is boring, there is no instant fun factor. Your beginning is dreadfully boring, when you get some SP and skills you can go kill NPC or hunt other players but if you loose it can very easy be back to licking roids in space, yay fun!!!
EVE might be for some, but it certainly is not or me, and I have been here some 9 months trying to see if it picks up and it has not so sadly My time is up soon.
A few friends have asked if I coudl reccomend EVE and the answer has been no, not right now. Because they mostly fancy what I do, killing stuff and getting loot and in EVE NPC's are either too easy or too hard and because they spawn right at you nobody dares go get that loot from thsoe nice big battleships.
I love space, but tbh I prefer D2 over EVE right now and I await WoW with much anticipation.
EVE was my first MMO and I learned a few things, like if the game sucks too hard the first few months don't listen to devs "Soon(tm)" BS and keep paying.
I'll read the review when I get home, but, EVE = teh sux0r. PvP is major FUBAR 'cause it's filled with cuddly bears and sentry guns all over the freakin' place. Also, its too easy to gank ppl.
Now, come PvP in d2 HC style! You got 1 life

I know, D2 is a completly different genre. I just always loved space and that is why I gave EVE a go. It just does not really fit my bill to be fun.
In d2 I can sit down and have instant fun. In EVE I have to travel first, I have to keep myself stocked with ammo and frankly NPC killing is a matter of range and that's pretty much it. With the new spawns, warp in, kill spawn asap and warp out to avidu a new spawn right next to you.
In d2 for instance building a char to combat some of the ³ber mobs in hell diff is a challenge in itself, unless you go for the easy Hammerdin approach of 1,10.
HC is fun, and promotes massive teamplay, I like that. EVE is about teamplay too to a great extend, but, yay teaming up to demolish rocks in space or NPC's is just boring. Yu can team up to kill other playes too, but uhm, its gank, gank gank most of the time. Very fun, take soo much skill, not.
As I said, come PvP in D2 HC. Make a mistake and you die, there is no clone or resurection.
And Dungeon Siege rock, very nice game. Finished too fast tough. -------------------------

He does have a point here, I think a lot of people would have experienced the let down of realising that your view is always 3rd person. I imagined Eve to be something along the lines of privateer but in an mmog. IMO it takes first person to be truly immersive and I really can't see why they couldn't have it as an option. Manning turrets is fun.

What I don't get is.. if it's boring.. why do you still play? I played since phase 4 of beta, and 4 months after retail.. got bored and let my friend play my account for a few months, now I'm back and it's fun again. I think I just over did it with 10 hours a day.
But.. if it's boring and you don't enjoy it, why pay for it? I never understood that.. There are other games you could put your money on. Unless you're just rich and can afford to pay for 3 or 4 mmo's at a time. In which case I say to you... can I borrow some money?

well.. you can fly a ship, you just cant pilot it.. but then, it seems a bit unrealitic anyways to steer a ship with a joystick, especially cruisers and upwards.... giving the commands on where to go and the navigators handling the rest gives a way better immersion than piloting a battleship around fighter style...

Eh first person would be alright, but technically, you don't have a first person view because you're in a pod and are looking through the eyes of camera drones .
Joysticks.. eh maybe..but they would only be useful for frigs. Indy's, cruisers, battleships, etc etc are too big. You'd be holding the stick to the left for 5 minutes before you actually did a 180.
And you'd have to have a joystick with 50 odd buttons on it. Or use the keyboard mouse AND joystick.. in which case.. why have a joystick?
What I really want to see is the return of ctrl + arrow keys to manuver your ship. I never understood why they took that out.

Edited by: Wraken on 19/01/2004 12:26:55 People allways thinks EVE as an arcade game. That's why they want direct control of ships and direct interfaces to everything. EVE is a role playing typed game in which the players make the content. The game mechanics just helps us to do it without a "game master" as in old board games and other rp games outside computer world.
Sure mining and pvp is boring when you think it as an arcade game because this has no control of the ships directly and your lightning speed reflexes are not needed here. This requires some thought and imagination to play.
In my opinion this has all the elements a roleplaying game needs. The rest is our responsible to make it enjoyable. Bugs etc. are not helping but strangly I have confident on the developers they will fix those eventually. In the meantime it's quite playable.
Also in that respect, role playing, I didn't want to join an existing corporation because almost all wanted to give new players skill books and ships almost for free. Well someone wanted hard work in return but in general they needed the new person to be uber skillfull in no time. No time to wait the person to develop in her/his own time and discover the game experience on her/his own time. I wanted to experience the game on my own and learn things the hard way. Now I teach new players when they ask info, I don't force it on them if they don't want it.
Well, that's my opinion of this. I don't care much what other people think of this game, at least I like it and if the others don't then they shouldn't be playing.
EDIT: some grammar fixes, english is not my primary "skill"

I guess if you ar obsessed with work EVE is ³ber great. I like action a lot. I also like exploring, venturing into unknown and dangerous areas. Like a dark forest looming before you. Then you run into some kickass baddie and have your ass handed to you.
D2 is aged, but still hold slots of fun. Not much exploring left and I know how mobs are and what to do. It is however a better adrenaline and fun fix than EVE. I tried so hard to love EVE because space is also fun IMO, I just can't anymore.
D2 untill WoW is out.
Oh and btw, I am immature and lack patience because I like action? Geesh, drop the sterotypes. -------------------------

OK, the guy who reviewed this obviously never got past the newb stage. The way in which he talks about the game (ie combat) shows his ignorance. Sure, the game can be abit more like work than a game at times, but to give it a 1/10... that's bloody harsh.

Edited by: Gan Ning on 19/01/2004 13:53:32 Someone should email 'mustardkid' and let him know he can't take on the world in an Ibis. Maybe he should go play nintendo and leave MMOGs for experienced gamers.
He's talks so much rubbish, you couldn't pick up Elite now and play it for 8 months straight, even the most hardcore of the hardcorest fan couldn't do that. So comparing EVE to Elite is pointless as they are two different games made almost 20 years apart.
I don't think you should even have devoted a whole thread to the dislike of EVE from ONE person, ONE kid called mustard who has probably never played an MMOG in his life. If he had he would understand that in all MMOGs you can't just start at the top, and he was crying 'you can't fly the ships!' sheesh.
I don't really think this needs any further discussion unless you want to pull a reader reviewe that gives EVE 10/10 and start a thread on that.
1/10 isn't even a balanced review, he's just some snot nosed kid who probably got ganked in Obe one too many times or is fustrated he can't put in a cheat code and get everything straight away like most of the console kid generation. |

Keep reading the article...the guys a ****ing moron. Eve on graphics alone deserves way the hell better than a 1/10. And anyone who rates Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced 3/10 needs to taken outside and recycled. The only thing i agree with him on is that unlimited saga is a pos. But really who does these stupid reviews? a six year old with the attention span of a chimp? Eve a 1/10 indeed...i wont even go into FFTA.
