Hmmm WHEN in history the german army was NOT composed of very human individuals? bleh. I hate hollywood , and by extension, peoples perception of ALL of them, encasing germans and the german army of WWII as a bunch of rabid monsters thirsting for the blood of the innocent. People back then did awful crap, but not ALL of them 
To keep this in thread watch THE PIANIST , thats a damn sad movie where OMGZ!, a german officer actually helps someone (shocking cuz, everybody knows, they were rabid bloodthirsty monters hungering for the blood of the innocent)

Exactly one of the reasons it is such a great movie. But that is as you say Hollywood all over. Never let truth or historical accuracy get in the way of a good story eh?

oh and When the Wind Blows Cartoon about an old English couple surviving a nuclear war and their touching innocence that the government / state will come and help them as they slowly die from radiation poisoning.

Yeah, very poignant reminder of the early 80's. The comic book is still available, I flicked thruogh it in a book shop recenty. Raymond Briggs I seem to recall.
On that subject ... "Maus" is a sad read.

Das Boot isn't a sad movie, it has everything required to make it a great movie. And it truly is a great movie.
On The Beach however is a very sad story, and very well performed.
But to me this is it, the saddest film i ever saw.

Requiem for a Dream has a pretty sad/bad ending, that combined with amazing cinematography and acting is quite touching.

I had the chance to see "Hotel Rwanda" a few days ago. That movie was the most moving thing i have ever seen, and the part where they're driving over the road of bodies is disturbing beyond reason. It would have just been a good movie, but what really makes it so relentlessly heartbreaking is the fact that all of this happened and no one tried to stop it.
If you get a chance to watch this movie, don't think, just watch it. It will change you... |

a very old movie comes to my mind, and its about a kid and his father, and the father dies in the end. I think the kid or the movie (unsure which) got a Oscar.
The movie was called "The Champ" I think.

I can't believe nobody has mentioned Schindler's List. The scene where Oskar Schindler breaks down as he agonises that he didn't save more people moves me to tears every time.

Hrm, makes me realise how many "depressing" films I've seen 
That said, I'll pick a movie which ends failure, death, or disaster over the "good guys" winning and lashings of hopeful promise any day.
Of the ones already mentioned, Leon and American History X are great films. Das Boot is also really, really good, and I keep intending to watch Dancer in the Dark. Anyway,

Does anyone else here occasionally watch opera, or musicals? I was once moved almost to tears by a broadcast of 'Madame Butterfly'. 'West Side Story' and 'Carmen Jones' are also very intense, as is most of the Ring cycle (at least, if you can follow what's going on).

Think i have only cried during one film which was Terminator 2 when i was younger. When he goes into the moltern metal my eyes filled up, when he gives the thumbs up that was too much for me :(
