But she returned to her own world in the end, which was kind of the point. Not to mention the general got pwned in the forehead, and the resistance (good guys) ended on the winning side. How is that a sad ending?

Elfen lied.
I know, it's an anime, not a movie, but it's the best, or worst, depending your viewpoint, collection of human perversions and cruelty I saw so far. The main character kills left and right, guilties and innocents alike, but she has such a sad past that you just feel sorry for her.
And the opening is damn good, in a melhancolic sort of way.

Saving Private Ryan, where the "old" Ryan goes back to Normandy to visit the graves, along with his children and grandchildren. Wow, that gets to me even thinking about it while typing this.

Oh dear me, maybe you should watch the film again. Only this time keep one fact in your head throughout the movie.
She is a little girl with a BIG imagination who is neck deep in a horrible world. How does a little girl like that escape from that world? Why through her imagination that's how.
Watch it again.
Whoever said 'Elfen Lied' needs to be shot. What a horrible little perverse show that was. Actually I think i'll put it in the other thread.
Anime and sad hmmmmm...Grave of the Fireflies! bit of a no brainer.

Still one of my favorites to this day...
Castaway took a while to grow on me. The first time I saw it I thought it was quite bland. But then after viewing it again I realised that it was pretty deep underneath it's skin.
I'm going to **** a lot of people off by saying my saddest movie is Schindler's List (probably my favourite movie too but you really have to be in the mood to watch it).

Quote: Schindler's List (probably my favourite movie too but you really have to be in the mood to watch it).
When I first saw this film, I would have agreed with you - I feel it hasn't worn well though.
The most depressing (in a good way) film I've ever watched would possibly be 28 Days Later. I know, it's not that kind of film - but if you didn't get your heartstrings tugged watching that film, you were (in my opinion) watching it in the totally wrong frame of mind. Watch it again...
If not, the it has to be Zulu - the senselessness of it!

Edited by: Antodias on 28/06/2007 13:54:17 Another one for Schindler's List/Shawshank Redemption.
Although those movies are very different, Shawshank never gets old, schindler's list does a bit.
EDIT: Although on the other hand, Shawshank was actually quite an uplifting film, so not sure about being the saddest movie ever. ------------------------------------ It's great being a Dev, isn't it? |

Maybe it is you who should watch it again.
The underworld was introduced first, before the girl was even introduced, or any other of the characters. Not to mention various parts of her so-called "imagination" affected the real world. Such as her mother physically getting better, and her recovery being commented on people other than the little girl. Such as her escape from a physically locked room with a magic chalk.
The fact that you would be so quick to dismiss such things as being "mere imagination" in favor of the more realistic setting of the film clearly shows what the director was trying to prove. ------------------------------------ I support the following changes:
