Several people have encountered an issue where their EVE clients now only show a black window after the splash screen and they are thus unable to login and play EVE.
This is an issue caused by a corruption of cache files from a test client build (Sisi test client)
There are 2 ways you can fix this.
Way number one
1. open the run prompt (windows key+r), paste in the following: c:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Application Data\CCP\EVE
2. Delete the Cache folder located there. [DO NOT SAVE ANYTHING, it is corrupt and WILL bork your cache again if you do not delete it]
3. Run EVE again normally, you should now find that a new cache folder has been created and you can login now.
Way number two
[Note: This way is NOT recommended for Vista users!]
1. Create a shortcut to the eve.exe file of the client you use to connect to tranquility
2. right click the shortcut and select "properties"
3. add the following in the "target" box: /end /LUA:OFF [Note: this MUST come AFTER the quotation marks, otherwise it will not work]
Yours should look like this: "C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE\eve.exe" /end /LUA:OFF
4. Click "apply", then "ok"
5. Run EVE from that new shortcut, you should find that you can login now. [Note this causes that particular installation to use the old location for storing the cache information, so your cache will no longer be shared]
I hope this helps.

as i, and many others understand, that second fix can also be used for those of use still running XP that want to keep their settings separated between two or more different EVE installations.
the problem is that EVE keeps creating a folder on "My documents" for captures and logs. any way to refrain EVE from doing so and leave our documents unmolested?

Please note that this fix does NOT separate the settings files or keep your logs separated on an per-install basis.
This does.
To CCP, please consider modifying /end /LUA:OFF to also move those sets of files. Yes, it works, but using a .bat file to launch an application is so 1995.

it still ain't working for me...
is it possible that CCP knows about this problem since the 24th and only 5 days later did they post up a possible solution (which seems not to work for all cases) ? is this the kind of support a paying costumer must expect ? during the time i played this game i have seen petitions take around 3 weeks being answered... and now this....
can we get a final solution for this problem (as evidently this was caused not by any OS bug but by a problem with a test server patch) from ccp ? -----------------------------------------------

Try:
Start->Run
%APPDATA%\Local\CCP\Eve
Include the "%"'s!
If that doesn't work,
%APPDATA%
should get you close, at least.
Of course, there's always the brute-force way to do it. Open a command prompt, and type: dir C:\ /s /b /a cache
That'll find and print every folder named "cache" on your C: drive.

thats sure did help, maybe next time ccp can be a bit faster and provide a more satisfying costumer service (specialy to the costumer that dont have windows english version) than on this particular case.

Tanis, you may wish to replace:
c:\Documents and Settings\%username%
with
%USERPROFILE%
as that's much more consistent across different versions, languages, and configurations of Windows.

Thanks Tanis, modifying my shortcut worked.
It's just a shame that one of my accounts lost close to 12 hours of training due to this bug (caused, so far as I can tell, by installing a test patch on my sisi client so I can continue to aid CCP in testing and bug hunting).
I'll post a petition on the appropriate account, but I wonder what my chances of getting my skill point loss back? (estimate 12 hours at 2277 sp per hour is 27K+ skill points and I'm sure others have lost more).
I'm not going to rant against CCP for this bug, I accept glitches happen all the time in a dynamic and evolving environment like this, but I do expect redress for my losses when they occur. I don't believe I am being unreasonable in that regard.
Thanks.

Tanis:
Your solution didnt work for me, neither other players solutions. My eve directory was installed in the same HD as windows XP, but the letter of the drive is not c: but g: (dont ask me why lol).
I tried everything even deleting all the eve folders, documents folder, downloaded the client and reistalled again...nothing..
The only solution I found was to create a new account in windows XP and installing eve in that account. Worked perfectly.
Point is: how do I log again in sisi now without messing again my whole PC ?

ahh deleting the cache does nothing for me I still get a black screen. I dont think deleting the cache has anything to do with it.
All I did was install Eve on my freshly installed Windows Vista and i havent been able to play it once. I dont think it has anything to do with the test build.
Can someone please give me a solution to this instead of just instructions on how to find the cache folder as this does not work.

Install windows XP on a new formatted drive is the solution.

Ok this isn't a solution, I'm not going back to xp just to be able to play eve, dont get me wrong this is a great game but it isnt worth the effort of going back just to play it. In reality it is ccp's job to make sure their game works, regardless of a computers operating system.
I'm sorry but if ccp dosent fix this then i wont be renewing my subscription at the end of the month.

I just wanted to be clear about the "cause" of this error:
I HAVE NEVER connected to Sisi, or attempted to.
Neither solution works, and getting this BSD should have alarmed me, but it seemed pretty normal. Everyone that tries EVE out with me always says the same thing: "It seems cool, but when are they going to finish it?"

Edited by: Karicha on 05/07/2007 21:20:39 Both solutions DONT work. I have 3 chars on 1 account, 2 chars are in Dodixie, those get black screen and cant do anything. The 3rd char is somewhere else, that one can do evrything and NO black screen. So its system related (depends in what system the char is in) and not client related as far as i can conclude.
Please note that just 30min ago i whas in dodixie without problems at all, but all the sudden BLACK screen when i undock and even since i log back on with those 2 chars they get black screen over and over and over again! It aggrovates the hell out of me!

I still get the black screen on startup. Are there any other fixes for Vista users ?

It seams to me no one gets this problem. I have deleted my cache, tried running it with the paramaters, redownloaded the client and reinstaled it. I have tried to run it as administrator and with Windows XP SP2 compampability. I have never tried to go on the test server infact I have never been able to log in under my install of vista.
There seams to be meny people with this problem and everyone else just keeps giving us the same BS solutions. I have petitioned CCP even they gave me the 'delete your cache' solution even after I told them I have tried that, I mean I know your not native english speakers but dont asume that I'm just stupid.
I just want someone to look into this instead of just asuming that I cant find the cache folder or telling me to go back to XP.

I also have this problem, the only way I got around it was to make a dual boot Vista/XP workaround altho I will keep trying to find a solution to this problem,
Also i dont think its the actual login screen that blanks out for me, but the EULA screen as I had a fresh install of eve on my Vista
Thx

Has there been any change top this. I am currently installing windows XP over the top of my Vista install because this damn thing would not work with vista..
And yes, I did all of the things suggested above, and none of it worked.
Vista is good, and will be an amazing OS once its more supported, people slant vista but its the developers that need to support what is a new OS from the ground up , and not the other way around.
Anyway...

Seeing as how tabbing it didn't fix it, and neither did a restart of Eve, I decided to clear my cache. As it turns out, this was a bad idea. Now I get the black screen after the splash, and reinstalling Eve doesn't fix it.
Hoorah!
edit: Oh yeah, this is on Vista 64-bit.
edit 2: I fixed it by booting Eve on an XP-machine, then copied the appdata files from that computer to this one. Good going CCP, you somehow automatically generate broken cache files on Vista.

Two accounts running from same computer and same EVE install. One account works fine, other doesnt. So your cache idea is blown out the arse. Cannot create a petition on the other account as it just black screens. Account was working fine before the hardware update on the same computer. Only thing I can think that has an influence is that I neglected to set a long skill and it expired while the hardware upgrade was occurring.

Char was stuck and moved to a different system and was able to log in fine. This was able to happen quickly because I had another account, but obviously all these "delete this" and "reinstall that" solutions are not the only solution and you should put your tinfoils hats away before going through the motions.
For the Devs, might pay to develop and out of game petition system for these occurances that works symbiotically with the ingame one so people can have stuck character issues resolved.

I'm getting the same behavior, except closing the window just goes to a black screen.
Any suggestions? I'm running on top of a clean Vista Ultimate 32-bit system. Deleting the cache folder didn't help.
At this point, I'm kind of glad that I haven't paid anything for this (yet). Are blocking bugs like this common to Eve?

Have that problem too and the above doesnt help. (Win Ultimate x64) I also tried something which i think relais on the actual problem, but couldnt solve it. Probably someone more handy with DirectX could try this out and maybe find out if its that:
There are some "older" games which have problems with Windows x64 vista and the DirectX10 files. For some of those games the solution is to copy the necessary dll files from a WinXP DirectX9 installation to the game folder. I tried this with some i had lying around from those games, and the black splash screen changed from black to containing some yellow squares with aprox 50x50px when i copied d3d9.dll to the eve\bin folder. Probably its something that has to do with that, ive just no idea which files may be needed and from where to take them

Probably i finally found the error. Maybe someone can complete the information to get the files to get it working. What i did was starting logserver.exe before starting eve. What i found there that seems like the error is:
Failed to start service fonts (bin\blue.dll) Probably just a font file missing that is used in the launchpad?? One line above it tries to open "arialuni.ttf", i looked into windows/fonts but couldnt find the file there. This error occurs 3 times in the log. http://img.eve-o.info/log1.jpg
Failed to start service ime seems some kind of "mailservice" cannot be startet... whatever that is http://img.eve-o.info/log2.jpg
Unhandled exception in TaskletExt Now thats a bad error CCP ;) Unhandled exception errors should in no way ever occur ^^ http://img.eve-o.info/log3.jpg

I'm having the same problem. Start EVE, get the splash screen then just goes black and sits there. I was on an older build, haven't played for a few months and I just installed the latest patch. I have the arialuni.ttf font installed so this isn't the issue for me. Anyone know if this has been fixed?

I'm also having the same problem. I've tried all the recommendations.
The only thing that has changed on my system in the last 24 hours is uninstall of my old email client Eudora (been using since the early 90's but since they stopped development and mozilla is taking over project .. ) installed Mozilla Thunderbird.
When I try the '/end /LUA:OFF' fix I can actually see the login window. I can type my password but all other buttons don't do anything. Also when I tried to close the window it asked me if I was sure I wanted to exit. Clicking yes/no or checking the box 'don't ask me this again' don't work!
I don't know what else I can try... There is no way I will reinstall XP and Vista is a bloated eye-candy memory / CPU vampire (trying to be polite) .. so if I don't get a fix soon, I will stop playing.

Possible Fix for some, I have an ATI AGP Radeon X1950 running in WinXPpro 32bit The black screen started after I went from Catalyst 7.8 to 7.9 A further update to the QuakeWars hotfix also resulted in the black screen. Removing 7.9 and reinstalling 7.8 fixed the issue.
Also of note is that; all other games were fine. there was no possible way to exit the black screen, task manager would stay in the back ground. I had to reset the pc each time. all other methods failed me.
Hope that helps.

im having a weird problem with my laptop since the patch where linux users started to complain about not being able to play eve anymore.
a few seconds after the splash screen the client starts drawing strange boxes and diagonals in every box. this happens on every screen (login and ingame).
i'm using ati fireGL5000 (mobility) with the latest drivers, also tried previous versions and even the omega build for ati. also tried reinstall windows and downloaded the new eve-client (full install)
used to run 2 clients at the same time without any problems.
any suggestions on resolving this issue are welcome.

I'm getting this problem on a clean XP SP2 install. The only things I have installed are video drivers for an ATI 9550, AVG Anti-virus, and Eve build 36800. I've tried both w/ and w/o my old cache, and w/ w/o the /end /LUA:OFF tag and still have the same problem.

Ok, now, CCP, you make a wonderful game, there's your kudo - it was irresponsible of someone to make an assumption that everyone on the planet loading up EVE would have a font only avaialable in MS-Office, or by specifically downloading said font from the internet, thank goodness it is avaialable without that.

I now appear to be suffering from this problem, although originally i wasn't.
I was suffering from random disco's in gaming without warning, i reinstalled the client several times and then stumbled across the advice of updating all my drivers and turning off hardware accelleration for the sound drivers.
I therefore did this and am getting the black screen after the splash screen. i have no issues with the cache folder because there is no cache folder as it is a completely clean install. my last resort is to revert to a previous version of my catalyst drivers ( i think someone suggested 7.8 earlier) |

As a follow up to my previous post, it appears that for owners of 'some' ATI AGP cards (notably the x1950pro) the problem rests with the drivers. I have done a fresh install of windows xp32sp2. The black screen still occurs with catalyst 7.10/7.9 and while eve will start with 7.8 there are some cards having issues with 2d performance (in that the cpu does all the work).
So while some agp cards work with 7.10 I recommend you roll back to catalyst 7.7 until amd/ati have addressed this.
Do a search of the ati forums for more information http://forums.amd.com/game/categories.cfm?catid=279

Character info is stored server-side, so anything you think you might have lost, hasn't been lost.
In fact, you could technically wipe EVE off your computer, reinstall it, and pretty much everything except your menu colors will be intact.

Just to clarify for the people who don't know how to fix it.
First download this file.
Then go to start > control panel > fonts > file > install new font. Find the file you just downloaded and click ok. |

Upgrading your graphic card drivers make things worse. I got to character selection when I rolled back graphic card drivers, when usually my computer crashed to splash screen.
But the rolling back drivers show that somehow the problem is in the craphic card and its drivers? However this must be worst patch ever. Very bad programming and qa from ccp.
running xp sp2 and radeon 9600. Any more ideas guys? Tryed them all now. I'm not going to get all these lost hours back. sigh.

I fixed it. It was a sound card conflict. GO to device manager in system properties. In sound, video and game controllers i have a load of devices listed. i disabled them one at a time then restored them if they wernt the problem.5th time lucky, disableing 'Unimodem Half-Duplux Audio Device' stopped the blck screen after the splash screen. i can log on as normal Good luck

I seem to get this intermittently, with no consistent cause that I can see. Sometimes one of my accounts works, sometimes the other, sometimes I can log in with both, sometimes neither. It's getting a bit aggravating and I wish CCP would make a statement at least they're doing something or looking into it etc..

Have xp, and a X1950 AGP card. yesterday I've made a test: with ATi driver 7.7 work fine. with 7.8/7.9/7.10/7.11 got a black flashing screen when starting EVE. read on ATI forums that they have problems with these last drivers. it's to ATi now to do something, even if for them these cards are "obsolete".

I don't know how many people this will work for, but when you get to character selection hit esc, then go to audio and make sure you UNcheck both enable audio and enable eve voice. Restart the client if it asks you to and you should be good to go.
Leads me to believe eve voice is not compatible with a lot of audio hardware which subsequently makes the client crash if you have it enabled.

I have this problem on a
Intel Core2Duo E6600 4 GB RAM Radeon x1950Pro PCI-e WinXP 64
I have tried with Catalyst 7.12 but it is not working unless I use /safemode (wich it looks like is starting the old graphics engine)
Also if I have the logserver running I get alot of internal driver error -messages in there so it looks like it has something todo with ATI.
Does anyone know if CCP is pushing this against ATI or trying to fix it themself?
Using an older version of the driver is not really an option for me since I'm playing other games aswell

Sounds like if it's just the fonts, it shouldn't be that hard to patch in, hope they do it soon. I seriously thought about dual booting XP before I found this thread.
not ALL office installations install it, I just spent an hour talking my mate through after having the EXACT same issue as posted, yet he had office installed (which by your answer should 'fix' it).
Most common fix is to just download&install the font...
It was like a baby, it landed on my lap and was helpless and totally defenseless. Then I shot it and bragged about it on a killboard.

ATI AGP DRIVER FIXED (possibly)
As of Catalyst 8.1 ATI now offer a HotFix for AGP cards. These drivers are only partialy tested by ATI so use at your own risk
You will only need the HotFix Drivers (do not install the normal 8.1 drivers) and if you need Catalyst Control Center (this is the WinXP32 link) then download it as a separate package.
I have an AGP X1950Pro and this is the first set of drivers to work for me since Cat7.7

I don't get a black screen, all I get is the splash screen, which stays up for 10-15 seconds, then disappears. It leaves ExeFile.Exe running as a service task, which has to be manually ended in taskmanager or it will stay there until reboot doing nothing.
This just started with the latest patch. Never had a problem before, and have no problems with any other game or program on the computer. Just Eve.
XP Pro SP2, latest DX9c, latest sound driver, and I'm 100% sure they borked eve up and don't know what they were doing. I paid far in advance, and can't even play due to this latest patch.

I have just started getting this issue after updating my Chipset drivers. What i've done to fix it.
- Dev Tanis's fixes - re-installed the old chipset drivers - updated chipset drivers from another site chipset man. site instead of the mobo site. - re-installed GPU drivers (Catalyst 6.2) - re-installed Sound drivers - updated sound drivers (latest AC97') - down loaded the damn .ttf - re-installed Eve
Am running good old Win2k SP4
No results thus far, i was running the game just fine an loving it. Any other suggestions? I hate doing the scorched earth thing. Any other ideas?

ok so i have fixed this problem for myself. My particular problem was the one that has seemed to appear more recently, where the splash screen loads, but then the login screen will not. Eve just shows up on the taskbar, and exefile.exe is in my processes list in task manager. I had been running eve in WINDOWED MODE prior to this. I am running windows XP pro sp2 with an ATI radeon x800 pro video card. Here is a step by step of what I did:
-I upgraded my drivers to the latest catalyst 8.1 drivers. -I installed the afformentioned Hotfix from the ATI site. -I rebooted my computer as instructed. -I tried running eve-online again. At this point, the same thing happened, HOWEVER, I tried pressing ALT + ENTER (or RETURN for some users), and as soon as I did this, the login window came back, only in FULLSCREEN mode.
I then was able to turn the client back to windowed mode just fine, and as of now this seems to have remedied the problem. I am unsure if anything besides an ALT + ENTER combo was really needed to fix this problem, but I am trying to give the most advice possible to fix this annoying issue. Best of luck to you all.
x-posted to other threads that deal with this issue.

Edited by: freelancer 1dash1 on 12/02/2008 19:44:26 I just thought i'd post how I fixed my Splash screen but no login screen issue. It may not be the resolution for everyone, since i had made changes to my system, but i thought it would be worth sharing.
Events leading to issue: I was running windows Vista and was about to upgrade so i Moved all my important files (including document\saved games directories) to an external hard drive, since I thought the PC would probably need a re-install. I then installed the new hardware but Vista loaded fine despite the changes so I then copied the directories back over. I tried to load Eve but it would not run I just got the splash screen and then the desktop and exefile.exe was loaded in task manager.
Resolution I re-installed Eve but had the same problem. I looked at the log from the logserver application and noticed it said it had problems accessing a file. At this point i wondered if it was related to the profile i had moved. I looked through the registry for anything concerning the profile settings and found the following folder:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders
The personal, favourites, etc keys in that folder were all refering to the removable drive I had moved them to previously and not to the correct location. I replaced the path on each to go to e.g. %USERPROFILE%\Username\Documents.
I then restarted windows and everything worked as normal.
I thought i would share, in case anyone else had done something similar to me.

This is a joke. I have just spent almost 4 hours of my time trying to resolve this issue with no success.
I started getting this after i re-installed xp on my machine, before which it worked fine. This pc is only used for gaming so literally has XP Pro, EVE and a few other games. Not a big deal to flatten it and start again, so i did. Same issue.
I have tried putting on a font, pressing alt + enter, changing my shortcut target, i can't delete my cache folder as eve has never been run so i don't even have one yet. Even though this clrly isn't my fault, as a friend logged into my account on his pc to swap my skill having missed over an hour of training, i'm sure i will see no compensation for it. I am a software developer myself and am not flaming you for there being bugs in the program, that's near impossible to achieve, but not compensating a customers loss due to these bugs, that's shocking.
I am currently sat watching my game time tick by, every second being one i have paid to have and cannot use. A quick resolution to this issue would be most appreciated.

I can reliably replicate this problem and reliably make it disappear: my speakers are connected via USB rather than to the sound card outputs. If something causes the speakers to disconnect or be unrecognized by Windows, when I start EVE I get the splash screen and then a black screen.
Unplugging and reconnecting the speakers and making them be recognized by Windows causes EVE to start behaving again.
Hope this is of use to someone else.

Running XP, tried all the fixes listed here and *nothing* is working. The game played fine this morning now it won't, only goes to the black screen. Everyone here would really like to get a solution to this problem...(listens to the echo)

Fresh install - XP Pro (32Bit), SP3, .Net 3.5 - black screen. Tried everything listed above - no joy apart from Omega drivers, which cleared the black screen and enabled login. First messages I saw were "unable to initialise sound card" - well - I haven't installed bleeding drivers yet, have I?
I don't know whether some conflict exists with newest ATI releases (HD2900XT) or it was a combination of Eve fighting the drivers and looking for the (non-existent) sound card. I suspect the fact that my fresh install was heavily doctored by nLite leaving less then half of the original XP for the installation didn't help either . Omega latest fixed it for me and I'm not going to try "to fix what ain't broken".
Although simple disabling the sound on install as a default option seems like an easy option to make it easier for (at least) some of us.

Hi all,
for me it was the same problem, playing, go a disconnect and wanted to restart, but only splashscreen showed up. When minimizing/maximizing something went to the top left corner of the screen. Started logserver - stated out: 274652008.05.24 11:17:17:44316946 : trinity.TriDevice: HRES:none(none) Made me wondering - I have a graphiccard indeed After looking into prefs.ini I have encountered: trinityVersion=dx8 I changed that to trinityVersion=dx9 and the game was able to start again. Why it changes to directx8 is rather strange to me. I hope this helps at least someone. Fly Safe!

READ UP.. VISTA/ATI USERS
Windows Vista with ATI Catalyst 8.6 has been crashing. I had to roll back to 8.5.... Load game, crashes system. I'm running an ATI Duel core 2.1ghz 4 gigs of ram, and an Ati radeon 1650 512 pci 16x. You see no difference between the 8.5 and the 8.6. Well except for the fact the game wont run. I've also noticed a lot of prebuilt systems comes with ATI hardware.. Its fine to update the graphics drivers that come preinstalled on the ATI cards. Which will run eve. How ever.. Better have a nice chunk of ram. Just make sure if you have 32bit or 64bit.. I thought I had 64bit Vista. Found out otherwise. But the main thing is 8.5. You will have to look down on the bottom of the update page for "Old Drivers" and find 8.5 :)
