1) Electronic Weapons ships 2) Logistic Support 3) Command Ships 4) Battleships
In each of these groups, targets are generally selected in alphabetical order.
So where are carriers in this list? Are they too valuable to bring to a fleet battle?
How about interceptors? Are they considered EW ships?
Do HACs come after battleships?
Intys' are taken out by the support ships in the fleet. Basicly people given the task to make sure they "Don't get too close"
Carriers hand out fighters to people pre-fight, so they are hidden 90% of the time, but if the piltos brave you'll see them for a short amount of time.

Actually, if you look, most fleets in EVE have a disproportionate number of people with names starting in the first half of the alphabet.
BUt ... yeah, order wise? Pick on a target group, and cycle through. Generally interdictors die first, then ewar, then 'stuff that might hurt'.

Dont worry you can leverage the fact that you know you will be primary by just going with a fat tank with plenty of buffer - few logistics and they can waste away on you. Response times pending of course.
But fact is you can leverage a obvious primary too your advantage.
That and a ECM burst would be a given on your ship ;0.

A smart FC keeps his options open, so with us there's no hard and fast rule about what to shoot first. It's all about determining which ships are the biggest threats, which ships will die quickest, which ships are out of range, or in a bubble, or webbed, or vamped to hell and back, or most expensive.
Sometimes, we even primary the drones. It's just a shame you don't get killmails for taking down fighters, really... ***

It all depends on your FC and the gang's ships. I mean basically if you want to dumb it down you do common, ewar, logisitics, bs ... A-Z muppet stuff. But real gangs focus on what ships do best.
Have 1 ship your primary ewar ship, which always locks on primary. Have all other ewar spread out to random big dps ships. Have a few (not all) drakes, cerbs, caracals... your basic missle boats set their overviews to small ships and cruisers. Assign them to pop the nearest hostile. They'll pop like popcorn and you won't lose that much dps on your primary. Also, it doesnt pay to use drones on primary when you already have so much dps from turrets/launchers... so sick all drones your secondary. If you really want to get creative, have your destroyers set overview to ceptors and drones... let them reak havoc... sure they'll pop a lot of drones with little killmails, but its a team game people.
Finally, when calling primary... I think its best to pick on the recon/ewar first... then take on the battleships. By the time you start ripping thru a few battleships, the hostile fleet will realize you already popped their cheap support ships, several drones, and their numbers are down.

The offtopic discussion about names reminds me of THE best sciencefictionmovie of them all.. so here's a quote from it:
Quote: "Dark Helmet: Careful you idiot. I said across her nose, not up it! Laser Gunner: Sorry sir. Doing my best. Dark Helmet: Who made that man a gunner? Major *******: I did sir. He's my cousin. Dark Helmet: Who is he? Colonel Sandurz: He's an ******* sir. Dark Helmet: I know that!....What's his name? Colonel Sandurz: That is his name sir, Major ******* Dark Helmet: and his cousin? Colonel Sandurz: He's an ******* too sir: Gunner's mate, first class, Philip ******* Dark Helmet: How many *******s we got on this ship anyhow? The Crew: YO!!!! Dark Helmet: I knew it, I'm surrounded by *******s [Dark Helmet pulls his mask down] Dark Helmet: Keep firing *******s!!

One of the few reasonable replies here.
Your gang composition matters, too. If you're carrier-heavy, for example, you might start shooting a Celestis before you get around to shooting an enemy faction battleship, even. Similarly, if you're heavy on the small ships, you'd better believe it's that Huginn's time to die.
Designing schemes for primary calling in a vacuum is a quick way to die to a force composition change.

...someday
TBH, it already has if you're an EW specialist.
Smart FCs won't want all of their EW boats concentrating on just one target. Twenty sensor dampeners on one ship is a bit pointless.

I start with the guy I see first on my overview generally, with a few exceptions (for example, if its not a big fleet I'm commanding and the first guy is a commandship who is acting as a decoy/fire-drawing ship, then I will switch if he is ubertanked.
After that I just click a bit through the enemy BS list to identify choice targets. I also keep repeating my targets over and over again. Makes it clear people need to shut up and helps with focus firing (if you didn't catch the name the first time, chances are you will the second, third or fourth time).
One question though, how many targets do you call? I generally call primary and secondary. A few times I went also with tertiary targets, but a few gangmembers said that was getting a bit confusing.

So where are carriers in this list? Are they too valuable to bring to a fleet battle?

Do HACs come after battleships?
Carriers usually stay out of the way with fighters assigned, if not they may show themselves in smaller fights due to logistical support,. They won't go down like everything else in the gang due to snipe BS having low DPS versus a capital's tank.
Intercepters are tacklers, not ewar. They will usually be smartbombed, or there will be a few ships on the other side with anti frigate roles, I'm refering to huginn/rapier, some hacs, dictors. They'll usually go for the frigs if anything to clear them up so the other side losses tacklers.
HACs come around the same as BS if not just before.Depending ont eh ship, vaga for example, they may ignore it due to its speed, others will have to worry due to the fact they don't have a BS's tank, but do almost the same damage. So if they die, it's almost the same as losing a BS without insurance cost wise.
Also some command ships will be ignored at first, vulture/damnation for example, as they can fit a nice tank and let live a bit longer.
And back to the discussion about names. I kinda hate my name, for one no one can really pronounce it and I'm not very stealthy when entering systems due to the fact I'm usually up top on local's memberlist. Being primary... It's usually a mixed bag. Either they ignore me due to my name which is harder to pronounce, or I'm screwed due to alphabetical order
