Here are a few things I would like to see in the future in regards to drones. Voice your support and sign the petition below to lobby for change.
Idea 1) Have the show info for drones you are currently using accurately depict how your skills and upgrades are actually affecting its stats like they have for every ship and other Module. Amazing how an entire Race's primary focus is over looked and under developed. Poor Gellente.
Idea 2) Incorporate a better user interface for drone deployment and control. Perhaps a series of key bindings would help. IE a blanket command for all drones to engage target.
Idea 3) user defined drone intellegence modifyers. Ie Solo Mode and Group Effort mode. Solo each drone acts independently of each other and group effort/hive mind targets are selected for the whole group by designating Setting a master for the others to slave off of. Ie Target automatic target selection bassed on class of ship as defined by ranks ie frigate can be set to 1 and a crusier set to 2 so when the drones are in auto mode they target frigates first that move within their automated proximy range and then continue to select targets based on the user defined system until an override is given in by the user.

1) Probably a good technical reason for it but high time it gets fixed anyway.
2) The whole interface could use a redesign, with customability as a design focus.
3) I'm a micromanager, would prefer to see a "dumb" mode in which the drones only do what I tell them and start picking their noses on the spot when I don't.

If (3) was implemented, it could make all drone bunch up and show a single icon, drastically decreasing drone lag in gang fights. -

A right-click menu option right below "Keep at distance" would be great: "Drones -> Group -> ACTION".
Drones are the only thing that force me to actually interact with the overview...and thats slow/messy while in a fight.
Who is the bigger carebear: The miner who braves lowsec on his own, or the "PvPer" who attacks an unarmed ship? |

Defensive Mode - Will only lock/attack hostiles when it's owner is attacked, will return to orbit as soon as target hostile is defeated. (Current drone AI standard)
Passive Mode - Will orbit owner until given different instruction.
The above would need a behaviour window, and a toggle for possible options :-

Drones are Eve's equivalent of Pets in AO/EQ etc, all the other game developer's have managed to produce a usable interface for the management of pets, surely they can't be any smarter/better than the developr's here ?
The drone ui currently has the appearance of a hastily rushed afterthought, it needs updating, overhauling and turning into wellthought and implemented addition to the games effectiveness.

1) Agreed. It's quite annoying even drones in space or in your drone bay don't show modified stats.
2) Agreed. All that rightclicking is awkward.
3) Not agreed. I don't like control/effort/skill being taken away from the player. Drones are pretty powerful as is. They shouldn't be made easier or automatically more efficient to use.
One thing I could imagine though would be an inherent size-dependant primary targeting mechanism. That means light drones would target frigates first, medium drones would target cruisers first and large drones would target battleships first, unless told otherwise of course. That would still be pretty dumb, but it would curb their stupidity a bit. If you want all drones to attack the same target, you should have to order them. They obviously have no group awareness. What makes this hard to do atm is the random wandering off. But that's a bug and as soon(tm) as it gets fixed I see no problem with having to manually control drones

I must admit that I am frequently annoyed by the fact that one cannot see how ones skills and module fittings affect ones drones, yet one can readily see this information for all other weapon types.
Please fix this CCP I have no idea what the optimal and falloff is for the sentries on my Sniping Dominix, I can only guestimate using the bonus for the Omnidirectional midslot upgrade thingys & when you add rigs it gets really complicated.

I'd agree to this.
And add drone status indicators while in bay, decreasing the size the drones in space interface takes up by placing the indicators side by side instead of stacked on top of each other, and possibly the ability to detach the entire drone interface from the overview itself and move it somewhere else.

I've given a little thought to a new drone UI: Click Here For Pic
On the left hand side we have control groups for drones, in this case there is a group of 3 Oger IIs and one of 2 Oger IIs. Each of these control groups will allow you to give commands to all the drones in that group. By default each drone type would be added to a separate group once launched i.e. all Oger II's in one group, Heavy Armor Repair drones another group. The player can split the groups with a shift-click, or combine them with a drag. Ideally it would remember your configuration after the drones are scooped as well, replacing destroyed drones with new ones of the same type.
On the top four basic commands can be issued to a group, Engage, Return and Orbit, Return to Drone Bay, Scoop to Drone Bay. These are the first four commands I thought of, but others could be added.
Hovering over each drone group would highlight the drones in that group in your drone overview. A right click would set AI mode.
Finally, Each drone could be controlled from the overview in exactly the same way we do it now (for those of you who like to micro manage)

Why no acknowledgments of these problems and or ideas?
The drone ui sucks... you know it, i know it, im sure ccp knows it yet not a word.
The ai for them STILL sucks and seems to get worse every patch... why?
For a destroyable (and for some primary) weapon this is really not fun.

Also, Caldari's missiles have the same problem last I checked. I actually do not fly Caldari, but I occasionally use missiles. I have to do the math to figure out how far my missiles will fly every time I'm flying a different type of missile or my skills improve.

When the icon is clicked the same menu functions that are in the overview would pop up. When the drones are active a mini drone monitoring screen would appear, which would be moveable by the pilot to any portion of the screen. This would allow better visibility and control of the drones during combat or other operations. An overload function for the drones is also needed.

The first idea of the OP is not something i desperately need but the other 2... Drone control is just so damn clumsy compared to everything else.
Using Guns? Ctrl-Click to target, F1-F8 to fire Using Drones? Ctrl-Click to target, right click on drone group, find and click 'launch drones', right click on 'drones in space', find and click 'engage target'.
This is just unfair but it gets much better with a little bit of laag. Once your drones are done with one ship, they spread out randomly and pull aggro from as many different ships as possible even if it means flying half across the room.
My whishes:
- hotkeys for drones and drone groups (launch, engage target, return to bay)
- better behaviour. Either have drones that are done with a ship return and orbit or have them focus on the same friggin ship...
