*suggestion* Maybe in the days of player empires (several alliances working together officially)

In their current state that's probably very unlikely due to their limited jump range (5LY). It is something I'll look into for the future though.

these things are great on paper but I do agree have them take fuel from the jumping ship first and if there isn't enough then check the array to see if there is fuel, that way it allows alliances to have free bridges or toll bridges. another option is you could make the take from the array role based/standings based in other words maybe your alliance gets acess to alliance purchased fuels and you allies can use the tower but they have to foot the bill fuel wise

Due to the jump range ? We have 3 friendly outpost systems within 5 LY of our outpost.... Just seems as it is it favours the big alliances particularly one/s that have soverign space dispersed into their 'pets' rather than alliances that work well alongside each other and don't mix borders.
Do they go offline if you lose soverignty ? Because we could see some systems changing hands 3-4 times just to get enough friendly bridges in system and things.... Maybe time to think about coalitions of alliances ?

Could we please get the forumla how exactly mass and distance are computed into the fuel consumed?
So every pilot can check the amount of fuel they requrie before jumping.
That would be really great.

Allow the fuel to be placed in a silo linked to the array on the production screen or take it from the corp hanger, then institute a jumping fee system. I'd also look into possibilities regarding making use of the array open to the public, but that's just me.

Alternately, finally get around to changing the "password" functionality of POS's to be a standings list for allowed entry/access. This would solve a number of issues.

PLS remove the PW functional from the bridge. Its not acceptable that the hole alliance needs to know all the time of the PW of the poses. A wet dream of any Spy. Not one bridge pos is safe anymore. Just make a sec pw for the jb or let make it a different setting.

Yes, should be corp or alliance, and only then password.

from what i read you can connect bridges between two towers of the same corp. also some inter-alliance connection is not possible. what about intra-alliance? can you connect two bridges of two corps within the same alliance? and if not, is that something planned?

Well you could have all of the poese managed by one corp, or you could have each corp control one jump if you have several.
The thing thats bad about it is that there is no way to control access other than a pw. There needs to be some way to manage the traffic so you cant have people abusing your portals.
Also we need documentation on the fuel usage!!! . Do not read this thread!!!

We don't need a toll system. We don't need any of this 'password authentication' stuff. Here's why:
Set your jump bridge array to have View access set for Alliance. Change the portals so that they allow anybody to jump who has access to the shield, including Alliance if that option is enabled. Release info on how jump fuel consumption is calculated. (Based on volume, I'm guessing? Come on CCP, it's not that hard to just say it.)
Suddenly, everybody brings their own Liquid Ozone and knows how much to bring, and password info cannot be abused. Perhaps a feature like a jump bridge password, which would be optional, so the bridge can remain online. Something.
Please, do not make it steal fuel out of our cargoholds... allow us to configure our portals in a variety of ways, as we wish.

By "Empire" I mean "0.0 one jump from Empire"
WRT the ongoing discussion about passwords and fuel use, if we do want to make the system more widely useable we'll take note of what's being discussed here, but the design goal for the Jump Bridge system was to facilitate alliance-level logistics, not to allow everyone in the alliance to hop around in frigates all the time. Any usability changes to make the latter easier is a change of design goals, not a usability tweak, and will require a lot of consideration.

Facilitating 0.0 logistics isn't a railroad system which takes weeks to come into effect :P 0.0 is too fluid an environment for that when push comes to shove. A railroad network like with Jump Bridges is something for kicking troops around. As long as it takes fuel out of the tower you can't let anyone freely use the network.
No, alliance level logistics are carriers, or jump drive enabled ships in general. They provide flexibility, ease of use, are not static routes which do take a long time to set up, but got the wrong end of a stick recently :/
A Jump Bridge network is for gettin in and out of systems where Cyno jammers are active, for routing troops around the map with great speed, but logistics are way too human resources dependant to be classed in with Jump Bridges - carriers are still the only key. Keep in mind also that the majority of alliances do not have the time or even space to set up and maintain a Jump Bridge network. Or consider the logistics of offensive warfare as well.
I realise intentions and plans, but content is always subject to a process of in game evolution, and strong dynamics. Something being in game designed for one or two things does not make it the solution to a challenge, in game there's a reality as well :/
Jump Bridges are excellent, they're like a railroad network, but we'd need to be able to set up more then two routes per system - the concept of hubs, if you will. And logistics? I'm sorry, it's time for some new module type to beef up carrier capacity.
I realise this isn't a thread about the carrier problem, but considering the angle provided of logistics, we need to put it alongside I'm afraid.

just monitor the ammount of fuel when ship x jumps through, test a couple different size ships of various races, and you can easily get a working formula on what should be charged, on the honor system for using the jump bridge
and nice work CCP, jump bridges are a necessary tool these days to manage a corporation and alliances movements ++++++++++++

Seems like people know but no one has posted it.
I believe the forumla is :
500 LO per LY per 1,000,000,000 kg mass.
So 2500 LO to jump 1,000,000,000 kg the max distance of 5 LY, and an obelisk is 1,175,000,000 so just under 3000 LO for most caps. (max distance)
An iteron mark V is only 11,750,000 kg so it would be a measly ~30 LO for the same trip.
A hyperion is 102,500,000 kg so about 260 LO for a full 5 LY jump.
A shuttle is about 4 LO :o so under 2000isk :o

I just tested this myself, your numbers seem more or less spot on. The exact formula for LO usage appears to be:
0.0000005*mass*distanceInLY<truncated>
The important part is the truncation, distances are getting rounded down to an integer, so a 4.9ly jump for example would really be counted as 4ly. Since getting these things to actually anchor at 5ly is impossible(it would need to be exactly 5ly since you can't go over) the practical cap for any jump is only 4x, or 0.000002*mass.
It's worth noting that mass reduction modules count here, so if you want to move something big and will be able to refit at the destination, slap on a rack of nanofibers in your lows and save anywhere between 20% and 50% of the jump cost. ---- AUS Corp Lead Megalomanic |

Originally by: CCP Greyscale I'll look into the possibility of adding a proper fee system when we have time
Though it might have been said, there should be a Management window for the Jump Bridge where you have an input box, and it's basically how much ISK is charged to the jumper per liquid ozone (so the corporation/alliance can base costs off that). ISK gets transferred into the owning corporation's wallet.
There should also be a permissions list where the owner can decide who can jump for free and who can't (e.g., checkboxes would include Config Manager, Caretaker, Corporation, Alliance, and Outsider).
Finally, a log window showing the list of jumps that have recently occurred for that jump bridge (as well as how much liquid ozone was used for the jump, maybe shiptype as well?)

This allows alliances to control exactly who uses their jump bridges and who burns all their fuel. Security here is exactly as tight as you want to make it
Having the forcefield password means that the "users" have acces to the innerforcefield asses as well (parked ships). Can be a nightmare controling who has the password, for alliance only .. not talking about the rest of friends. A different password for the bridge alone might be more usefull. In a big alliance with manny corps allowing only 2 bridges per system .. considering they give full acces to corp only it's unfair ... what if 4 corps want to use a bridge in same system (capital system for example) and not to argue with other corps why the bridge isn't fueled or why some of the members don't get allowed to use the bridge.

After using these for some weeks here are some observations:
1. The design limiting their use to "alliance-level" logistics is too limiting. Since we are able to spread these out and reduce the effective size of a controlled region the "random-frigate-pilot" scenario is an important consideration that needs some attention. What you have given us is the ability to install our own jump gates. It's hard to believe it was never conceived that we would try to implement them in a way that help us move about our regions in an "everyday" manner.
2. The administrative overhead of keeping the bridges fueled is not as burdensome as I first thought, but would you consider increasing the size of the ozone bins concurrently with the other POS changes?
3. Still takes too much pg and cpu.
4. Thanks for implementing them. We love them.

I got one complaint about the jump bridges...related to the cyno jammer.
I'm fine with cyno jammers and the idea behind them. I can be okay with the hitpoints. I am not, however, okay with the fact that twinned jump bridges completely circumvent the cyno jammer.
Cyno jammers have this 1,800 second onlining/offlining delay, right? That means if you turn it off and on, there should be a thirty minute period where anybody's cyno fields can go up in the system. That means if you want to get your own caps in, you have at least thirty minutes to do so, and in that time so can anyone else. It's a tactical decision.
If you've got a twinned jump bridge in there, though, you can just send your own capital ships right in no prob. Cap ships just take the twinned bridge and nobody else can.
After that, the fact remains that taking down capital ships will essentially require capital ships of your own, and if you simply can not bring them in, then its swinging the balance in favor of the defender way too much. Not as if you can't already put 15+ medium turrets on a cyno jammer POS, or that they're making turrets and especially scrambling batteries lock even faster next patch, or that POS guns are bugged and if you manually operate them they have infinite range on grid.
Yeah...just a couple gripes. |

Edited by: Fovo on 23/08/2007 22:03:59 OK CCP how about this before placing the gate you recommend we do the following ôIt is recommended that corporations check that their intended anchoring locations are in range of each other before purchasing the necessary structures.ö
Ok, How do I see how far it is from one system to another in LY? Yes (For the rest of you think this) I can use a 3rd party measurement tool BUT would prefer not to. From what I have read the process for setting up these gates are as follows
Go place a POS in a system your corp or alliance has SOV 3 (Or better) in. Anchor your jump bridge 15K from shield. Use the control tower to locate another available bridge within 5LY to connect to. Then go through the admin and fueling things.
Here is the dilemma I find my self in. How do I measure (In-Game) the distance between 2 systems without setting up the pos first? If I am wanting to compare my routing options I need to be able to measure from system X û Y or possibly see what systems are within 5LY of X. by knowing this I can then find the best possible pos location for setting up bridges as opposed to just guessing. I know many of the veteran players become use to using 3rd party utilities for this sort of thing and / or use there deds/saps/titans to do this sort of figuring, but someone such as myself doesnÆt always have that luxury.
Perhaps adding something similar to the tactical overlay but for the universe (F10) map or an option of highlighting one system on the map and having the ones that are within 5LY change color or highlight or something.
This may not be as important as some other things, I am sure I am not the first person to run into this problem.
Thanks

Posting because I can...
Does anyone else think the model for these is just a bit disappointing? The funny spiked tower design is a bit...not jump bridge-ish. It doesn't really scream "I reach across the stars!"
I'd take the basic design, make it larger, rotate it so it sits horizontal, and then spread out the section between the "base" and the "top". Ideally when activated the force-field around the two would drop and some big flashy effect would play as the ship "jump" animation did.
But this is all purely aesthetic.
