That's started happening long ago. My post regarding situation. And El***ER's reply.
I've already filled (weeks ago) in bugreport with all needed info (crash dumps, logserver output), but CCP closed it as non-reproduceable (#41154).
The only hope that El***ER will upload logserver output of running eve and we'll try to figure out the reason.
Both Wine and cedega 6.0.2 are affected.

What i'm doing to capture crash info... I launch logserver, create workspace, launch eve with lua keys. A bit later eve.exe process disappears, and ExeFile.exe process hangs in memory, even when splash hides. wineserver process continues to runs until i kill ExeFile.exe process, then it shuts down since there's no process under its control. This is exactly what is happening with my client as well. I see the splash screen, then it goes away, but the exefile.exe process is still running in the background but goes no further.
I created a log file, but I don't know if they want me to put in an actual ticket. I put it up online and can be downloaded here. I am running Ubuntu 7.04 32bit with Wine 0.9.41.
Should I put this in as a ticket?

I erased .wine and reinstalled it along with eve and still have the problem (splash screen then crash).
I'm running ubuntu 7.04 32 bit and have a er... can't remember now... 64bit amd 3500 thingy, certainly not dual core or anything fancy like that!
I'm using the latest wine now, though was using .39 version successfully before patch today, then it stopped and in my futile attempts to find a solution I upgraded to wine .41 and got same results :(

Still the same problem here, it goes to the splash screen then crashes. eve.exe is running until the splash then EveFile.exe continues running but nothing further happens.
I don't know how to make an error log but if someone can enlighten me I would be happy to.
I am running Ubuntu 7.04 and Wine 0.9.41

You can create a log by running the exe in the EVE program directory called, "LogServer.exe" through Wine. Once it opens up, click on File, then click on New Log Storage.
Once that is done, start EVE like you normally do. If you watch the Log Server application, you will see a whole bunch of information fill in.
Once you have captured all the data that you can, you then click File, then click Save Workspace which will allow you to save the log file to a directory of your choice and to name the file.
Once you have that file, you can attach it to a petition.
Hope that helps m8

I'm getting this issue post patch as well, only under Wine instead of Cedega (haven't tried Cedega on my setup yet.)
My current configuration is as follows:
Gentoo Linux, kernel v2.6.21-r3, XFce4 desktop Pentium 4 3.2GHz/512kB/Northwood, Intel 875P Chipset, 2GB memory eVGA Nvidia Geforce 6800GS AGP, using binary Linux Nvidia driver v1.0.9755-r1 Wine 0.9.36 (compiled from source with no CFLAGS), OSS audio (audio disabled within Eve)
Almost everything worked perfectly pre-patch, aside from the usual lack of solar system map lines and highlighting. Right after patching, the spash screen appears, and then disappears after a while. ExeFile.exe continues running in the background.
Problem remains when I nuke my Wine folders, and reinstall Eve from scratch on this version of Wine (from the latest completely up to date full client install), as well as v0.9.38, v0.9.40, and v0.9.41.
Is there any preferred category/subcategory under which CCP prefers I file a petition? I'm thinking Technical Support/Crashes-Lockups. I already have my LogServer output prepared and ready to upload __________ "We demand rigidly defined values of doubt and uncertainty!" |

Well, my another guess - maybe those who can run eve have some dlls installed from 3rd-party applications. If anyone got eve running and it's the only one application installed, then my guess is wrong... I've tried to set up C 8.0 runtime thru SxS system, hadn't helped in any way.

Just as an fyi. I completely uninstalled wine (.9.40) and installed via source .9.41 three days ago. Installed a fresh copy of EVE with it. After the patch, it worked just fine. I do NOT have any 3rd party anything installed that has anything to do with wine or cedega other than the actual applications+ EVE.

I should also note that a few guides recommend installing some DirectX or other .dll's outside of the normal wine setup. Some guides also recommend some registry changes,
I have not done this - the only extra step taken is installing the arial font.

You should not file these as Petitions.
Being in QA I do not have access to the petition system.
If you can submit bug reports I can then attach them to my internal defect and get more information.
There is a work-a-round that is working for SOME people but not all.
Apparently there is an issue with font recognition. To fix this. Rename the /*/trangaming_drive/windows/Fonts static link and create e new Directory called Fonts Copy the font files from /*/.transgaming_global/Fonts/ to your newly created Directory
try to run EVE. If this fixes your problem then carry on. If it does not then please create bug reports with any further information.
If Logserver will not run in your environment then you can use the Cedega Debug option Click on the Eve game in the Game selection panel and click on an EVE icon (do not run it). Goto File > Debug In the pop up select the 'Debug Channels' and add the following string "+seh,+tid,+module,+file,+dosfs,+win32,+ddraw,+debugstr,+relay" (minus the quotes). Select a Output file. Play.
After the crash Archive the error log (.tar.gz preferably) and the attach it to the bug report. this will help us identify the problem.

This was asked in the cedega forums, and seems like it MIGHT be relevant here: What version of python is being used by those who are now suddenly in crash mode?
My system (which is working fine in both wine and cedega) has python 2.5.1 installed. This may be nothing, as the python code internally may not be affected by what is externally installed, but I'm scratching my head over what could be causing some of you to splash/n/crash while others like myself aren't seeing ANY issues whatsoever post patch. (I'm noticing improved performance on login times, as well as a slight increase in fps (1-4 fps in general) under both wine .9.41 AND 6.02 cedega.
Also just helped a corp member install ubuntu (64bit) ATI drivers, cedega 6.02 and EVE and he's not experiencing ANY crashes like this either. (python 2.5.1 for his system as well.)

if i run with my CCP directory installed with Linux, EVE Scratch
if I copy my windows CCP directory in my /home/user/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/ EVE scratch
if I create a link to windows CCP directory in my /home/user/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/ EVE run's
humm, so, we have a problem with system file... but that I don't understand is that before 2.1, my linux EVE directory works fine

Which one? The one located in ~/ (My Documents in Win)? I've tried doing so, but no success... could you drop whole directory structure you have on win drive? Are you using fat or nts filesystem there? Edit: lol, sorry, i have to update thread a bit more frequently. I have few guesses... thanks for your investigation, it seems to be really helpful :)

I'm sure new patches are tested thoroughly before they come out on Windows. Obviously Eve has many users who use Linux. These patch crashes happen. Perhaps there should be a skill queue available for Linux users. The argument is that not having a skill queue promotes user involvement. However, not being able to log in for extended periods of time does not promote user involvement probably much more the opposite. I think as a consolation we should at least be offered a skill queue.

Any suggestions on how long you need the debugger to run, what exactly you need out of this, or another way to get the file to you?

While I'm not an expert on the subject, I seriously doubt that it is a Python issue in that sense. The Python used here is to run the Cedega interface, not the EVE exe file. cedega-small.deb depends on python >= 2.3. I have 2 PCs, both use Ubuntu 7.04, both have the latest updates, both use the Ubuntu Python (2.5.1-0ubuntu3)... Both have Cedega 6.02, and apart from the CPU, both machines are practically identical. However, Eve runs on one, and not on the other. Don't know why... A fresh copy won't work, the "working" version on the "non-working" PC doesn't work either...
Once again, if an EVE dev needs any more info, if I can run any tests on my PCs to help with the dreaded "bug-hunt", just let me know!

Ok, I can confirm the ReiserFS fix. I had a spare HD that I was trying and failing to install Windows on. I decided to check this forum one more time and saw the entry about ReiserFS. I formatted the extra HD with ReiserFS, and created a directory on the new drive. I copied the entire contents of my ~/.cedega/EVE directory into the new directory on the new drive(making sure that all the security settings were identical). Then I replaced my ~/.cedega/EVE directory with a link to the new directory on the new drive and now EVE works perfectly!
I can't believe that it's a problem with ext3, I've used it for years without any incidents, but... *shrug*. At least I can play EVE now!
I am assuming that this fix would work using other filesystems as well, which might explain why the link to the windows directory worked, assuming that it is using FAT32 or NTFS.

I really don't want to move to ReiserFS, as part of my reasoning for choosing EXT3 was for EXT4 and a smooth upgrade... reinstalling will be no fun at all.
I heard tell there might be a patch during downtime to resolve the issue. I've got a long skill training, so I'll give it a day or two and find out...

the good thing on linux is that you could just boot a linux cd, attach an external hd and copy everything with correct ownership and so on to that disk (linux fs required or container file containing a linux fs) then rebuild the fs, copy everything back, adjust /etc/fstab and reboot

I find it hard to believe that reiserfs is the answer. More likely a full reinstall fixed something that is different between the PC's that are working and those that are not working.
However the fact that it was working pre-patch and not post patch is something that CCP and Transgaming between them need to address. Asking users to reinstall there operating system is really not good enough.

I guess that it's not confirmation of reiser being a fix... just any FS outside main filesystem of OS. I'd consider reiser as fix if two identical OSs were running on the same pc on ext and reiser, and eve would run on latter while failing to do so on former...

The tower has 2 drives, and the .cedega folder isn't on the same drive as the system... And it works. The second hard drive is there for my /home folder... *sigh* Didn't work for me... I tried copying the lib file to another folder, another partition (both ext3 and reiserfs), and even to a USB HDD (ext3) and a memory card (FAT32). Same old results... My tests aren't that conclusive though, as I had to delete the swap partition in order to get a new partition, and the external HDD isn't the best type - it's a backup system, not a fast access system. If I'm really desperate this afternoon I'll try resizing the partitions of my laptop's hard drive to do more tests. As a counter-test, I'm also about to copy the .cedega folder from my tower to the system HDD. In theory, that should stop it from working. More tests, more tests, but need to go to the airport to pick someone up... I'm tempted to leave them there and play about with Eve... Priorities... :)

Okay. Any thoughts on how to partition an already in use hard drive to have a reiserfs partition and then put eve on it? Is it just the one file from eve or was it more of eve?
how did you start the program then? command line with 'cedega eve.exe' from the eve directory?
Maybe Eve could offer a service $5 a month more for Linux support. $5 x linuxusers should more than pay for some guy to insure Linux compatibility. Or maybe a skill for those who can't login 'persistence', 'fortitude', or bonuses on will power training.

Try to track down which files are needed on your installation. But before that, try linking whole lib folder.

I have root directory (/) running on ext3 and /home also ext3 but encrypted and mounted using device mapper. When EVE was at that encrypted partition it didn't work. I had some free unpartitioned space available so I have created another ext3 partition and installed EVE there - now it works.
It looks that as if there were some race condition in library loading and when some libraries are not loaded fast enough game hangs. Reiserfs might be a bit faster when reading from hard drive and that is why EVE started working in some cases.
Windows users also have this problem so I think it's something within EVE. WINE is another layer that might slow down loading of libraries so that is why it is more often triggered under Linux.

It appears on my new reiserfs system when I install OSS Support in Wine and then activating sound in Eve. The game crashes as soon as the sound button is ticked and doesn't start until in all sound drivers in wine are deactivated. I then switched the sound off in eve and activated the sound driver again. Seems it doesn't crash if it does not try to load the sound libraries.
Maybe that helps.

The hdparm test was probably a bad idea, since it reads data off the surface of the disk, ignoring totally any filesystem or data structure. It just reads sector #random, and reads back the result. This is the throughput of the drive, but then if we are dealing with a filesystem, it then needs to "decode" the data correctly. Filesystem x says that the file is on cluster number a, then b, then c... The hard drive needs to read sector a, then b, then c. (This is the theory, since modern drives are intelligent, and have figured out a way to read data efficiently). So adding a filesystem to a drive will slow down that result slightly, more or less depending on which filesystem we use. But a file on a CD or DVD? That is probably the worst case possible, as the drive may well have to spin up the CD first before reading the file... This just doesn't make sense... The trend seems to be something to do with the drive speed, but there are exceptions that are... exceptional, to say the least.
I decline any responsability for what I have just written. I'm ill, I've just woken up, and I don't have any caffeine in my blood stream whatsoever.

Recap. This is the research I've sone so far.
PC #1 - EVE works. AMD64, Ubuntu 7.04, Cedega 6.02, GeForce 6800, kernel 2.6.20-15-generic. PC #2 - EVE crashes. Centrino 1.6, Ubuntu 7.04, Cedega 6.02, GeForce Go5200, kernel 2.6.20-15-generic (changed from previous tests to be inline with PC #1).
PC #2 - Eve "splash 'n crash" (c) Gojyu Changing the version of the python DLL (python25.dll) has no effect. Installing Python onto a Cedega folder fails. Copying an Eve setup onto a different HD has no effect. Tried ext2, reiserfs and FAT32 (but slowish access-time). Copying an Eve setup onto a 2Gb file, preformatted in EXT2 has no effect. Copying an existing EVE setup that works on another PC results in a splash 'n crash version. Praying to the Gods has no effect.
PC #1 - "Eve yay! works for me" EVE setup is not on the system hard drive, but on the /home drive. Changing to the system drive has no effect. Torturing the "Cedega drive" with random seeks during the launch of the Cedega client has no effect.
Put simply, on one PC it works, and I can't break it. On the second, it doesn't work, and I can't fix it (though Kadesh Priestess' idea seems to work for some). If I'm really motivated this evening (and I probably will be... I need my Providence), I'll make a server debug fime from both PCs and diff the 2 logs, see what happens. CCP Devs, if I find the cause, can I have divine intervention to get Amarr Freighter up to level V? No? Hmmm... Was worth a try anyway. I'll still diff the logs.

I'll still diff the logs.
hmmm I wonder what differences kdiff3 would bring if you diff pc1 with pc2 (try /etc first) sftp://root@pc1/etc

Edited by: Kadesh Priestess on 27/07/2007 17:49:17 Lol, it's more and more funny. Found out something. I've made link to that file, and renamed lib.ccp to lib2.ccp (before my advice to make link). Few mins ago found out, that link doesn't help at all w/o lib2.ccp. After that tried to delete link and leave 2 files - both lib.ccp and lib2.ccp. No splash'n'crash... everything goes as smooth as possible =)

Yeah. But you have to keep lib.ccp, or game will return error about corrupted installation. And not sure if it's the only suitable name... but it works. I don't see logic here :>

Originally by: kill0rbunny I'm getting those problems still and I have ext3 too.
I have no probs with 6.02 cedega in my debian machine (1.8GHz Sempron, 6600GT with latest drivers) and it has reiserfs filesystem.
I have same splash screen then nada problem on my freshly installed feisty kubuntu on 2.4GHz p4 (Hyperthreading, integrated 865 intel gfx) which also has reiserfs filesystem.
Somehow I doubt that the problem lies within filesystem. :-) It's somewhere else.

Ok, so if I'm reading this right, these are the steps I have to take on Ubuntu feisty. (Assuming sda1=my ntfs Windows partition)
Correct me if I'm wrong (I'm at work and can't try myself):
(make a dir on NTFS drive and copy lib.cpp and stdlib.ccp ONLY)
mkdir /media/sda1/Program\ Files/CCP/EVE/lib/
cd /media/sda1/Program\ Files/CCP/EVE/lib/
cp .wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/CCP/EVE/lib/lib.ccp . cp .wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/CCP/EVE/lib/stdlib.ccp .
(go back to the lib dir under wine and symlink the files on ntfs)
cd .wine/drive_c/Program\Files/CCP/EVE/lib/
ln -s /media/sda1/Program\ Files/CCP/EVE/lib/lib.ccp lib.ccp ln -s /media/sda1/Program\ Files/CCP/EVE/lib/stdlib.ccp stdlib.ccp

After reading that the problem might be related to a timing issue with harddrive access or some file on it, I first tried to just populate the cache with the whole Eve directory:
$ find .cedega/Eve-only -type f|xargs -IFILE cat FILE > /dev/null
Unfortunately that didn't work, but as I got 2 GB of memory I just created a 1.7 GB tmpfs mount and copied the whole lot onto it, after which I got a login in screen and was able to log in. I didn't try anything else besides the obvious overdue training, as I wanted to post this asap for the other addicts disconnected from eve.
So if you got enough memory just do the following and enjoy the game (until y ou run out of memory I suppose):
$ sudo mkdir /cedega $ sudo mount -t tmpfs none /cedega/ -o size=1810612736 $ cp -rp /<cedaga>/Eve\ Online\ old/* /cedega/ $ ln -s /cedega /<cedega>/eve-mem
After something alike you should see an 'eve-mem' category and cedega, start the game and enjoy the fun.
Hope this helps in find the critter chewing on the wrong code and people desperate to at least get their training going again.

Tbh, here's initial data needed for solution. I've just tracked down file we needed to copy, then played a little with it, and later found (accidentally; just because i hadn't moved file but copied it and renamed source, then deleted it) that eve needs presence of multiple lib.ccp files inside folder (or one file with symlinks).
And i want explanation to be my trophy, but i'm afraid that it's beyond my possibilities.

Ok, i think i know what is going on. (thanks to Kadesh Priestess ;-) )
EVE reads ALL "*.ccp" files from "lib" directory in order they appear in filesystem table. If You create more and more "lib.cpp" they start to appear on the beginning of the table. If ANY "lib(*).ccp" is placed before "stdlib.ccp" in that table then EVE works fine because "lib.ccp" is loaded first. It looks as if "stdlib.ccp" depended on "lib.ccp". You can check what is the order of files by using "ls -lU".
If this is correct then that dependency should be resolved or "lib.ccp" should be forced to load first.
EVE works fine: [zerg2000@zealot lib]$ ls -lU total 2904 -rw-r--r-- 1 zerg2000 users 148518 Jul 29 13:29 lib9.ccp -rw-r--r-- 1 zerg2000 users 1567727 Jul 25 11:57 stdlib.ccp -rw-r--r-- 1 zerg2000 users 148518 Jul 29 13:20 lib5.ccp -rw-r--r-- 1 zerg2000 users 148518 Jul 29 13:20 lib7.ccp -rw-r--r-- 1 zerg2000 users 148518 Jul 29 13:20 lib4.ccp -rw-r--r-- 1 zerg2000 users 148518 Jul 29 13:20 lib2.ccp -rw-r--r-- 1 zerg2000 users 148518 Jul 29 13:20 lib6.ccp -rw-r--r-- 1 zerg2000 users 148518 Jul 29 13:20 lib8.ccp -rw-r--r-- 1 zerg2000 users 148518 Jul 29 13:20 lib3.ccp -rw-r--r-- 1 zerg2000 users 148518 Jul 25 11:57 lib.ccp
EVE does not work: [zerg2000@zealot lib]$ ls -lU total 2752 -rw-r--r-- 1 zerg2000 users 1567727 Jul 25 11:57 stdlib.ccp -rw-r--r-- 1 zerg2000 users 148518 Jul 29 13:20 lib5.ccp -rw-r--r-- 1 zerg2000 users 148518 Jul 29 13:20 lib7.ccp -rw-r--r-- 1 zerg2000 users 148518 Jul 29 13:20 lib4.ccp -rw-r--r-- 1 zerg2000 users 148518 Jul 29 13:20 lib2.ccp -rw-r--r-- 1 zerg2000 users 148518 Jul 29 13:20 lib6.ccp -rw-r--r-- 1 zerg2000 users 148518 Jul 29 13:20 lib8.ccp -rw-r--r-- 1 zerg2000 users 148518 Jul 29 13:20 lib3.ccp -rw-r--r-- 1 zerg2000 users 148518 Jul 25 11:57 lib.ccp

It is possible to make some changes using "debugfs" but there is high risk of damaging filesystem if it is not done correctly. Maybe try moving "stdlib.ccp" instead or move it somewhere else, put some junk in "lib" (for exmaple from "bin") and then copy it back (or try it with "lib.ccp"). Try to observe how files move through the list.
Kernel determinates where to place files in order to reduce filesystem fragmentation so it is not so easy to predict.
If I find any other easy way to do it I will post it.
Hmm... perhaps creating other filesystem (that don't care so much about fragmentation) in a file and mounting it as "lib"... but... lol... :-P
Best solution would be a patch from CCP.

something like this perhaps :
cp stdlib.cpp stdlib2.cpp && \ cp lib.cpp lib2.cpp && \ rm stdlib.cpp && \ mv stdlib2.cpp stdlib.cpp && \ rm lib.cpp && \ mv lib2.cpp lib.cpp

This is because of different filesystems. NTFS have different structure and organization than ext2. Perhaps NTFS just writes "lib.ccp" and "stdlib.ccp" one after another and does otherwise only in certain situations, for example on fragmented filesystem and perhaps ext2 always tries to optimize it a little and when it is desired it writes "stdlib.ccp" first. Or something like that :-P

Actually with ext3 it gathers data for 5s or so before starting to write, so that is very much possible.

Very strange. I reinstalled from scratch and I still had the problem even though lib.ccp came first.
999467 -rw-r--r-- 1 fenrir fenrir 148518 2007-08-03 10:21 lib.ccp 999468 -rw-r--r-- 1 fenrir fenrir 1567727 2007-08-03 10:21 stdlib.ccp
However, once I copied the file so it came first AND had a higher file id I got past splash onto a black login screen (I could hear choppy audio).

Edited by: T Dave on 03/08/2007 03:58:11 I rushed ahead and upgraded to 0.9.42 in the blind hope that that would solve the problems - it didn't.
And then I found this thread, followed the symlink idea up to lib7.ccp and saw it was positioned above the other files in the list. Great, but it didn't play with 0.9.42.
So I downgraded back to 0.9.41 and... it works! :-D Just in time for me taking this laptop away with me for the weekend as well - perfect.
For those who spent the time to post solutions - thanks aplenty.
So who's going to try and fix 0.9.42....?
Thanks again
TD
P.S. For those who are as n00b as me - I found this page useful in working out how to best downgrade (and stay downgraded) on a Debian [apt / dpkg] based system: http://doc.gwos.org/index.php/HowToWine#Downgrade_wine

I've noticed that too. Yea, that lib should be present both above and below stdlib in list. Otherwise it won't load... ------------- Alternative idea to NOS |

I've gotten to the point of splash and crash by installing an older version of wine... however I can't even fine my lib.ccp files to copy and paste them.
no .ccp's in the bin folder.
Not hidden either.
Anyone?

.9.42 and .9.43 are garbage per app db and testing. (mine own.) regression in there somewhere.
.9.41 is still king o' the hill for running eve under wine.

I messed with the latest version of WINE for well over 5 hours trying different things to get it to load and nothing worked. I uninstalled it, grabbed 0.9.41, installed, fired up EVE and it works like a charm.

HI all!
Can confirm that its now working.
You have to do 2 things.
1. Downgrade to wine 0.9.41. ow to downgrade: http://doc.gwos.org/index.php/HowToWine#Downgrade_wine To find the old version of unbuntu archives the link is here http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/archive/index.html
2. Then you hav to go to your eve install folder and copy lib.ccp untill a copy is over stdlib.ccp.
This solved it for me.

Hi all. I have just battled with the splashcreen showing and then crashing/dispearing. Using Cedega 6.0, on Ubuntu 7.04. On Cedega 6.02 it did not crash but I recieved a blackwindow instead when it dispeared.
What solved it for me was copying my windows\fonts folder from my windows partition to the Transgaming_Drive\Windows\Fonts folder and it works like a charm for me. Have not had any problems sins then.

UPDATE.
We think that we have found part of the cause of this and have a fix that is being tested as we speak. It is our intention to put this fix into the 2.2 deployment.
It appears that there was a versioning issue which impacted loading and this was aggravated by the Wine Issue. We are hoping that with the Wine fix and our fix this should now go away.
If you would like to test this please make a copy of your Tranquility build and then download the latest TQ to SISI patch and test it against SISI which has the fix in it.
If you still encounter the error please file a Bug Report with as much detail as you can and in the description say the Bug report is in reference to Defect #19661

Uhmm, Sisi builds haven't been working with Cedega for the last week or two:
Quote: I was offline for a bit but when I got back the Sisi test patch 35446 was failing ... Splash then quickly flips to second blank screen and stays stuck there with no login appearing.
Running in debug with +debugstr yelds me the following message repeated forever: fixme:thread:GetThreadTimes (0xfffffffe): stub
Since then test patches 35494, 35510, 35561, 35602 and 35635 have been put up - no improvement.

Unfortunately it looks like I've got this bug too. It appeared at random - Eve just shows the splash screen and fails to load, leaving the ExeFile.exe process running. I'm running Windows XP. |
