yes it runs on DX9.
the current one doesn't use an DX lol. it doesn't even use your GPU which casues a lot of people with dual core CPUS (which eve doesn't use either) to get lag.
so yeah trinity 2.0 and the graphics update the win!

Believe me - it does use the GPU - have you ever seen pure software rendering at a resolution of 1280x1024 @ 32bpp or better? Awful FPS and it looks nasty, pixellated and grainy.
Of course it uses DirectX. It also uses the GPU on the graphics card.
The new graphics engine using DX9 is a tactical decision - it keeps the doors open for people who don't want to upgrade to Vista, coz MS ain't gonna port DX10 to the XP platform.
Dual Core CPUs aren't utilized to their maximum - this is true (programming a truely multithreaded game is a pain in the rear end) BUT you're drawing entirely the wrong conclusions here with regard to lag.
Not having a true dual core machine (I have a P4 3ghz with HT) I can't comment on the experience, but it might have something to do with the fact that the game runtime is having issues with being a single-threaded application being split over two cores by the hardware.
Hopefully, the new Trinity graphics engine will include optimisations for the new breeds of CPU and GPU... but equally hopefully they will maintain the performance of the client for older hardware.

Everything looks good, but I'm a little worried that the Scorpion looks like a painted model. The windows look like blobs of paint on a model kit, and the highlighted hull edges look "drybrushed".
It still looks better than the older model though.

I should probably interject at this point to point out that there's a mix of DX9 and DX10 graphics in here. The pod, Amarrian Stargate, Merlin and a couple of others are the DX10 versions, but that "next gen" scorpion is actually still using DX9 - just with a texture update.
CCP announced (somewhere... can't be bothered to go find it) that when DX10 comes in, the DX9 client will get an upgrade as well. That new Scorp texture is one of those upgrades - a new texture. Looks better, still not DX10 quality.
I'd quite like to see what the REAL DX10 scorpion looks like, tbh... ***

3D artist here myself, too. Observe.
http://dl.eve-files.com/media/corp/pkmx/Scorpion_New.JPG
Notice that the model has not been updated. It's the same shape, same number of polys - the model itself has not been updated, it's merely been given a new, high-res skin. It's a nice, high-quality skin that makes the model look a lot better.... but it's not a DX10 update. Notice also that the lighting is of an identical quality to what we get from the EVE engine right now, and that the objects in the background - the planet, contrail and running lights - are identical to what we already have.
http://pic.eve-online.com/devblogs/pod.jpg http://dl.eve-files.com/media/0701/CS4_LowModel_Map.jpg
In these instances, not only have the models been given higher-res textures, but the models themselves are substantially changed. The poly count is significantly increased by the number of extra modeled details. Furthermore, the textures are of a higher resolution even than the updated Scorpion texture, and the lighting effects are considerably improved upon.
Unless I'm very much mistaken, the scorpion is still running on DX9, whereas those renders for the station and capsule are more along the lines of what I would expect from DX10. ***

I'm not saying that to you :P your point is the texture could be better. my point is while that may be true, the models are so much detailed it's jaw dorpping. even without the textures they are dorp dead profession. just don't forget is right about the DX 9 thing. it has that texture because it needs to run on DX9. but in NO way let anyoone tell you it's just a tetuxe upgrade. ----------------------------------- I'm working my way through college target CCP |

lets get a nice close up shall we? old
note the model has many flat sides to it. I circles them in red.
now for the new DX9 model new Remember this is only talking about the model, not the texture differences. A.the front of wing has a top and bottom overlapping structure that the spike is coming out of. also the spike is no longer jsut falt it goes at at the base. B.EVERYTHING C.cool new wing shape D.whole new shape to this section of the ship. no longer a flat plane. E.This isn't a texture it's a detailed model of 4 sci fi things. just like with it's position inside B, it used to be nothing but a flat model. F.fun new addition to the ships model. better seen form other angles as a brunch of small planes stacked around each other. G.no longer a flat model here either. H.another example of more polygons.
do you really want me to do the back? or is my point clear now? are you really an artist? or just an artist that didn't look closely? or is blind :P
don't forget eve is running off of what... DX7 right now? ----------------------------------- I'm working my way through college target CCP |

Very nice collection. A few things though:

Seen that a few times so far, but I am not sure if that is the new look. It seems identical to the current look to me.
Missing: One MMORPG site also had the new graphics for the ferox and augoror a while ago, but I cannot remember its name.

Looked it up and, yes, you are right. It is a new model. The differences are rather minor, though, even for a tier3 ship. The abaddon has much more obvious differences. The biggest for the hyp is the different engine trail color.
