I should have some images of the Rorqual, the new ORE capital ship soon. I might pop over to Sisi to get a snap of one. ------ http://myeve.eveonline.com/ingameboard.aspa=topic&threadID=562778 - NEW EVE graphics gallery! |

Glad someone agrees with me.
All the ships look too small, small-panel detailing is now only present on the big ships, and has been surplanted with MASSIVE panel gaps with lights in them. Guys, scale up the gaps in the Apoc's armour to real life size, and you could powerslide a bus through them =/
The Executioner is now made of smooth panels, aside from the bits where there are holes, the Inquisitor grew itself a forehead, for no reason, and the Augoror looks like a bunch of armour plates from one ship taped onto the innards of another...
Not to mention DX9's lovely cling-film-wrapped metal look, without ANY weathering on any of these ships =/
I doubt I'll use the new engine tbh.

Ok, I do have a question. What is this that the GPU is actually used? I was under the impression that it was not in use per sT, rather that it was only used for accelleration or somesuch. (I am only a layman so would have very little idea tbh. Mechanical engineer )
So it means that (if I have understood this correctly) eve actually uses massive graphics resources which kill my cpu but leave my gpu relatively intact, even though my setup on half life 2 can run with little trouble with most if not all settings at high up to and including 72fps.
With eve I am lucky if I get 35 in station...
Is it really such a resource hog? ----------------------------

The GPU, or graphics processing unit as it is cunningly named, is designed to render graphics. The CPU, or central processing unit as it is slightly less cunningly named, is designed to run about everything else (Other than audio for the audio card, or if you have a physics card and one of the like 2 games that uses them physics, etc.)
Windows calculator? CPU. Half Life 2? GPU. MSN Messenger? CPU. Bioshock? GPU. Eve Online, run on Trinity 1? CPU.
I'm sure you see a pattern with the first four, and see something terribly wrong with the fifth.
I'm no computer hardware expert, I learned enough to build my own computer years ago and have forgotten all the acronyms by now. There are plenty of words I'll use that are probably a bit off. But I do remember that graphics card have hardware specifically designed for rendering environments with stuff like shaders, anti-aliasing, etc. It has memory designed to efficiently store and access this information, differently from typical RAM. CPU's and standard RAM sticks are designed for longer term storage, like loading a song for WMP or remembering all that stuff you wrote in notepad.
Someone like me has a meaty graphics card thanks to their old one dying and getting a new one, but has a not-so-meaty CPU. Bioshock on full = no problem. Eve on low in semi-large fights = zomg ctrl+q before it asplodes

Edited by: Ishina Fel on 08/09/2007 10:34:45 EVE uses the GPU for DirectX 7 level effects, such as hardware Transform & Lighting. The GPU also does the textures, as well as the optionally available multisampling.
For today's GPU's, that's barely worth a yawn, really - but it still hogs resources due to the archaic way the code uses CPU, GPU and RAM. Just think abnout it, Intel is up with their SSE4 instruction set, yet EVE probably works with SSE1, if even that much.
A good analogy: think of you computer as a long line of people passing on buckets. They are able to handle pretty big buckets, filled to the brim with water.
Now EVE comes and hands them somewhat smaller buckets. On top of that, they are only one third full of water. But they still take up the hands of the people passing them on, and any person can only pass on so many buckets per minute.
Then you enter a fleet battle, and a lot more stuff needs to be processed. EVE now hands your system bigger buckets... much much bigger buckets. In fact, they seem to get exponentially bigger the more ships are there on your screen. And even though the amount of water in them hardly increases, and your system has no problem handling the weight, it crumbles because of the sheer size of the buckets.

I will reply to your last part first; that is exactly what I am suffering, and I take it that is what the new engine (trinity 2) will hopefully clear up.
I asked for a simple explanation, I got one, just wasn't expecting it to be that simple... .
Thank you for the time you spent on it, I just hope it helps someone else around here, but I must mention I was already aware of the various resource splits except in eves case.
Thank you. ----------------------------
