Thank you CCP for officially supporting Linux.
Although, had CCP gone with OpenGL in the first place, a native port to Linux would most probably have been feasible. As it is, the decision to go with DX has now forced them to split the client into 2 versions - one for DX 9 and one for DX 10. Yay to the joys of vendor lock-in.

a gl renderer would probably make eve perform better, via this "cedega build" or via wine. at least ccp is being linux friendly though, they could have given us all the 'cold-shoulder'. --- cheers, gordo |

Wow. Thats great news, looking forward to more soon .
And about the performance drop due to added layer ... Thats really totally unimportant on todays CPUs(and thats where the drop happens i believe). I only have a old athlon with 3 ghz, and i still can run 2 eve clients easily on my machine. With dual cores and quadcores being the current cpus i honestly see no problem whatsoever about running multiple eve clients at the same time, added layer or not. After all if you run 2 instances of eve you simply can run them on the second cpu.

Edited by: jansaell on 21/08/2007 14:28:46 I have found that the client is running very well under wine and cedega, but you have to get a god driver for the video card you have. If you dont have god OpenGL harware axceleration you wont get god performance from the game.
Im running Wine and Cedega and are getting god framerates.
And remember - Wine and cedega is not another layer, its a rewrite of the windows API for linux, so its not much different from using any other API.

I've been involed in linux for more then a decade. The reason I got into linux as opposed to a BSD variant is for one very simple fact:
Linux would believe me when I told it the BIOS was wrong. BSD would not, at that time, allow me to tell it how many heads/cylinders/sectors were on the drive, and the simple fact was I needed an OS I could make run properly on a broken machine.
I have made linux work perfectly on broken or kludged machines multiple times. I have made it work on machines that have had heat damage for years. I have made it work on machines with failing quartz crystal 1PPS generators. I have maintained machines that had enough problems they were unusable with windows for years.
Part of this is "Because I can." the other part of it is "Because I work with what I need to."
Now, realize that running linux with oft-times beta software gave me more functionality and more reliability then a working machine running windows. Add in to the equation that I do a lot of very computationally intensive tasks. I run servers that I require 24x7 uptime excluding planned maintenance.
I run windows on one machine, and one machine only, and that's the box that runs EVE. The only real reason I still have a windows box is because it runs EVE.
The real reason I don't run windows is because I've actually read the EULA's. I've been involved with computers for a long, long time. When the EULA begins to stipulate things like an inability to work around a bug or use any part of the OS for a purpose not intended by the programmers, I have a serious problem. I want things to work the way I want them to work. I own the hardware, but I can't own the software? Bull.
Linux I can fix if it breaks. I can tweaq it if I want to. If I want it to stay stable, I just leave things alone and guess what - it doesn't randomly break.
That being said, yes, I have very bad luck with windows. I do tech work for a living and have for years. The comments of my friends and peers are "You have an anti-windows curse. You have the most bizarre problems I've ever seen. On the up side, I know if you fix it, it's gonna stay fixed."
All of this being said - THANK YOU CCP. Very few people recognize a concerted, extended effort. Few people realize how many changes have happened at ATI after AMD took over. Alot of those changes will become apperant when their new driver (I believe code-named Orca) comes out. Among other things it will include AIGLX support (Beryl/compiz/compiz-fusion users rejoice! No more XGL!) and it will have a serious set of fixes so far as the performance issues are concerned. It should also be noted that ATi drivers now install easily with new kernels, as opposed to a year and a half ago when the drive was six months to a year behind.
I've done regression testing. I've thrown all the results out to test the new driver version. I've been paid to do regression testing. I've done regression testing backend scripting. I know what an absolute pain it can be.
You've chosen the best of both worlds - Get a dedicated team of professions who are (and this is the most important point) BACKED UP WITH EXTENSIVE EXPERIANCE to handle the nitty gritty, and you handle what you're good at.
I wish I'd found out about the linux client beta test in time to get involved with it, but all will be well that ends well.
We may be a very vocal minority, but in general we're a very skilled minority as well.

IBM being the big Linux supporters that they are from a hardware point of view I think they could be looking at making things more efficient. Of course Client and Server are two distinct areas.
Yeah, IBM supports Linux servers a lot, still it's up to agreement with the customer, what hw/sw will be installed and supported. So at the end, ibm's preference doesn't really matter.

Hi everyone !
I know beta testers subscription is closed, but I can't play on my Mac and this is a big problem for me as : - I've started discovering EVE on a Windows computer at job (bad, bad ) - I can't seriously continue to play at job, but I don't have a Win computer at home - I can't stop playing it now, my caracter as evolved and the free trial is coming to end soon - I wan't to pay to continue but not to play once a day 15 minutes in a hurry at job
My request is simple : is it possible to download the mac beta version ? Cause if I wait for the official Mac release, I guess my caracter will be erased and I'll have to start another one
Could someone help me ?
TIA

First, Characters/Accounts have never been deleted in the history of the game. Never. You could let your trial end and not activate it until 2010 and it would probably still be there.
Second, even if you had the Mac Client and a registered testing account, it can only connect to a special testing server that has like 20 people on it and nothing (characters/items/etc) from the main server. Testing is not done on the main server.
Third, EVE runs decently under CrossOver. As with the coming Mac Client, you need to have an Intel Mac to use CrossOver.

Hum, I see. So I have to wait for the official release.

Thanks for all those infos. I'll have a look at CrossOver.

Elementary, my dear Watson. Not everyone can train for 15 days in a course like the MCPs do and have skills for Oracle, DB/2 or PostgreSQL. However, looking at how CCP employs so many people already, the investment could (should?) have been made on knowlegable people who could support more stable backends, instead of just MS brown-nosing.... :|
