The Coalition:'Good post man, insightful and lots of truth!'
The Alliance:'What a piece of trash, wall of text, heap of noncense!'
They say the truth is a 3 edged sword? No kidding

Boring!
I rate it a 1/10. Mostly because it is lacking facts and is strongly biased. Also, the letters BOB can easily be replaced with pretty much any alliance in this game.
Also, the OPs fundamental lack of knowledge about BoB.

Bud, it doesn't bother me that any thread gets attention. If I bemoan anything, it's threads that lack quality that get attention. I rarely post in BoB threads, because even if it is a good original post, the following spam and crap that gets thrown on there make it senseless to actually try to participate. I don't dislike James.. I just ran out of patience waiting for a good post, and ended up giving James the shaft when I got here.

The tl;dr, low-fat, girlfriend-free, bias- (can't achieve -- with my current alliance tags) executive summary of these last three threads works out as something like this:
Observation
For a long time BoB have had, in the eyes of most of the playerbase, a public image that's probably summed up by "BoB don't lose fights". Regardless of the accuracy or otherwise of that statement, that's what most people who had an opinion at all about BoB believed - particularly those not directly involved in 0.0 politics.
Immediately prior to the ASCN war, this was a background issue for most people, because BoB were not right out in the limelight and most people were happy to think about other things. You can judge this sort of thing fairly well by just counting the number of variations on "What happens when BoB win Eve" pop up on the forums every week.
When BoB started demolishing ASCN, they pushed themselves back into the public eye, everyone remembered that hey, BoB don't lose fights, and the number of BoB-victory-related threads started to rapidly increase. People started to seriously worry what would happen when BoB "won", because nobody thought that they could lose. The eventual destruction of ASCN fuelled this, as did the subsequent collapse of the North (we're moving quickly here to save characters; homework is to write your own analysis of the effects of F-T on the general trend). With D2 and ASCN out of the picture and Goonfleet declaring that they were pulling back to wherever, people were wondering if anyone could stand up to BoB, or whether the whole of 0.0 would effectively be controlled from Delve - nobody seemed to be able to even slow them down noticably, the idea that "BoB don't lose fights" was stronger than ever and they seemed to be able to do no wrong.
Then BoB ran into a brick wall in 9-9. The question of why this happened is one I'm not going to bother to try and answer, both for brevity's sake and because I know that I don't know. The fact remains though, as anyone watching the Influence map can see for themselves, that BoB have been unable to make any progress for some time now. There's a lot of information and misinformation floating around on this point, and any claim has an instant counter-claim, but the fact remains that the BoB warmachine has stalled. BoB fail to evict Goons. BoB fail to win a sovereignty battle. BoB lose fights.
That's the significant event here. Go back over the forums for the last few weeks and count how many people have posted threads relating to "what will happen when BoB win". Regardless of the facts on the ground, the perception has changed. BoB are no longer seen, by most people, as an unstoppable force, because they've just been very visibly and publicly stopped.
This doesn't mean that BoB are going to lose, or even that they're not winning on the ground, or anything like that at all. It has no direct effect on the material condition of the war itself. But that doesn't change the fact that the perception that BoB is unbeatable has taken a blow; how long people remember what's happening here is an open question, but right here and now BoB look vulnerable. And that's something that hasn't been true for a long, long time. |

I wish I had written this trilogy (under an assumed name, ofc).
Remember, propoganda is sometimes more effective if you say what people want to believe to be true, rather than what is actually true.
So, in that vein, I fully endore the accuracy of these reports, and I am sure that they will not lead to any underestimations or surprises about the BoB war effort.
(Oh, and imho, part 3 is the weakest of them all, apart from the bit in part 2 about the op's girlfriend .. for a moment I thought it was going to be revealed that she is a kickboxing supermodel, giving away the op's BoB affiliation.)

Analysis
This bit makes no claim to be unbiased, although it attempts it. It should also, hopefully, be shorter.
BoB have I think spent a not-inconsiderable amount of effort creating and reinforcing their image of invulnerability. It's been extremely well-crafted, they've been very careful to ensure that everything they do at least fails to undermine it and where possible reinforces it. It's served them very well and delivered them a lot of valuable victories. That's not to take away from the fact that they're extremely skilled and experienced players, but the fact that everyone treats BoB differently gives them a comfortable buffer zone in case of any miscalculations.
They've also managed to grow in a very efficient manner as a result of this aura, being able to effectively cherrypick the best PvPers around, swelling their ranks without watering down their skillbase. However, to get a broad idea of what type of recruits they've been getting, you have to ask "why would someone want to join BoB?", not as a derisive question but as an honest and open one. Back in the beginning, from what I gather, joining BoB was something like joining Outbreak today - you're signing up with a small, highly-skilled force who are willing to take anyone on and can deliver challenging fights 24/7 - and as a result, the core of BoB does seem to be made up of people who relish a fight and genuinely just want to keep on picking on the strongest enemy around.
However, look at BoB today - or rather, BoB six months ago. They're the de facto big dog of 0.0, they don't lose fights, they have loads of shiny toys to play with and they'll keep you in killmails. What they haven't offered for quite some time is the old BoB experience (what's now probably the Outbreak experience) - non-stop combat with real challenge. People don't expect BoB to lose fights, so most people join BoB expecting to win.
This has worked very nicely for them as long as they keep that winning streak - they maintain their stranglehold on the majority of the top PvPers and keep on winning. However, if they start losing, all those people who joined BoB on the basis that "BoB don't lose fights" are going to wonder what the hell is going on. They're not getting what they signed up for, and, looking to a hypothetical future where BoB keeps losing, the more that they feel they're losing, the more will leave. If BoB are pushed back to Delve or wherever, the core BoB membership will be loving it - it's a return to old times, fighting the big man, on the back foot, with real challenge. However, the bulk of the membership will, I suspect up sticks and move elsewhere, possibly to a gentrified Outbreak, possibly to pastures new, who knows. I see no reason to doubt the claims of BoB leadership that they're happy to be beaten, but I don't buy the suggestion that that automatically extends to their entire membership. If RSF keeps pushing them back, I think they will start to bleed players. What effect that will have on them as an alliance I don't know, but if it happens, it'll be interesting to find out. |
