Are they?
I once heard some guy tell me that a high profile female character played by a guy once tried to pose as a girl until he spoke on TS.
Most people create their alter ego, who they wish they were etc etc....and often what they look like.
*I can understad why female players want a male avatar since they dont want to receive 100 invites for love each day....this is afterall the interweb*

I'm playing a member of a race that has until comparatively recently been enslaved by a bunch of supercilious religious zealots and who's escape was triggered by a bunch of human mutants in a universe where ftl travel is possible and space is filled with some sort of "fluence" that acts to slow spaceships that fire shells the size of volkswagens and the thing that bothers you is .... I might be a guy playing a girl??
So ... which bit of that was weird again?

I have male and female chars in eve..
Firstly there are several types of people that play mmo's , yes you are right some of them treat their avatar like its some kind of alter-ego, quite a few of these are younger players who feel like they have something to prove so they make male char's that look as evil or aggressive as possible, in an attempt to boost their own self image.
However, as you get older you begin to realise that its just an avatar and not a reflection on real-life.
Some people create female avatar's to gain an advantage in some games, female avatar's tend to get special treatment from young male players that arent smart enough to know that 90%+ of female avatar's are actually male players, so they get into groups quicker and get the pick of better loot.
I often create female avatar's in online games because i love women and if im going to have to look at an avatar's backside for the next couple of years or more, i'd rather it was female ...
Why do you think there are so many female characters in fighting games when 99%+ of players of that type of game are male ?... exactly the same reason because the players love women and the way they move.

not too sure what to answer here, the reason i chose a female avatar is because i was told pirates ect go easy on female chars (which wasnt true) but tbh it makes no differance imo , now i cant help it now a days if ive started wearing silk stockings and high heels when i play Eve , it is uncomfortable at first but you do get used to it :)
anyway ive forgotten the question now hehe

Well that's certainly weird in my book.
All my characters are female and they were chosen mainly for their starting attributes. I just create something pretty looking, you'll have to excuse me if I don't find men pretty.

Perhaps I am a 'tough guy' who doesn't care about moisturising his skin in real life and my alter ego - the opposite of what i am, is femenine, at least far from my male reality.
I am what I am not.
Honestly I am concerned that if everyone knows I am a male, I might have to be subjected to the rubbish internet-bound men are prone to dishing out to other men in flacid e-peen slapping fights. I never admit to being either male or female in-game, and as this character is but an alt nothing has changed. I mean, heaven forbid someone confides their male-centric views to me without a sense of irony, I would spew.
So really, It's not at all strange that a man, given the chance to create something, creates the image of a woman. Isn't that what most men desire above all else? We are the biblical Adams of the internet.

Not really, its all about how secure you are in your sexuality, i know what i am and what im not, i know im attracted to women, and as i said earlier, i'd much rather look at an atractive female character than a male one, it sounds to me as if you have a problem with sexuality in general, .. bad experiance maybe, did you try chating up what you thought was a female and got a surprise ?....
Peoples sexual orientation has absolutely nothing to do with whether they create male or female characters in games, it sounds as if you have an issue with sexual preferance in real-life rather than with peoples character choice in game..

to the OP,
i see some "reading" in your future:
the object of "desire" in Freud the subject "fear of castration" in Freud
and perhaps texts by Lacan.
those will point you in the right direction to find the answers you seek.
if ccp adds a reply, then i would add Freud's "The Uncanny" to the list. but its highly unlikely...

I for one think Eve is sexist heaven. It really is fun to eavesdrop on the the little weenies.

I would have thought that the answer is obvious.
A lot of people play these games to relax after a hard day at the office/college/whatever and the last thing you need from something recreational is additional stress.
Understandably, some folk take the easier route by "roleplaying" female characters and thus removing the need to display any awareness of politics, tactics, economics or basic common sense.
Lemmy only knows I've tried, but I find myself completely unable to bump the station every time I undock, or select weapons based on artistic appeal rather than functionality. I also find it impossible to jump to a wrong conclusion based on the flimsiest argument and then steadfastly stick to my guns in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary.
So, alas for me, it has to be male avatars all the way.... even in SWG where you can watch things jiggling as you run.
The prosecution rests. |

I'm sure there are some people out there who play their avatars as some extension of themselves, or what they wish they could be.
There's a practical side to this too. In most MMO's, you're going to be spending 95% of your time staring at your character's rear. Would you rather stare at a hairy male orc's rear, or a cute female elf's rear?
EVE is somewhat of an exception, as you hardly ever see yourself unless you stare at your skill training screen all day.
What is REALLY weird though, is dragging this dead horse back out into the sun to beat it some more.

how many threads have we had regarding this matter ?
sometimes, female avatars are created as alts... just because you get bored of creating yet another male char.
sometimes, it happens when you decide to quit eve and then come back creating a new character... being bored of the old, male, one, you create a female char.
sometimes, it might be that indeed, somebody feels more like a woman inside
BUT DOES IT REALLY MATTER ??? i dont care who's male or female offline. it's a game, not a dating agency.

Your average non-roleplaying player is actually a lot more dysfunctional in this respect than those who recognize their avatars/characters for what they are.

I dont think it really matters at the moment.
My main is male, my second account is female. When im on both neither seems to get more attention then the other. I think its a combination of EvE attracting a more mature player base, and the fact that the portraits arnt avatars so you dont have a thirteen year olds trying to check to see if the female Avatar walking by has a attractive rear or not.

I personally think that any guy who picks a male avatar has a good chance of being either homosexual (which is ok by me if you are) or extremely insecure about themselves.
I spent ages trying to make my avatar as ugly as possible and I'm pretty pleased with the results. Mine is definitely not a cookie cutter deteis.
The reason I chose a male avatar was because I'd tried in other games having a female character but I dunno enough about women to really make the part work, and once others find you're a male in a female avatar it kinda leaves an odd taste and a sense of "...uh...ok whatever" in the people around you

What difference does it make. Do we assume anyone playing a race that has no gender is somehow lacking in certain areas? Do we assume anyone that plays a wookiee is secretly growing the hair out on their backs?
Why do you prefer to look at a guy's rear and gaze into a male character's ugly mug eyes?

It's not really that bad to me. In some games, the female character of that particular class or race just looks better than the male version.
I would say that a guy playing a girl avatar in an MMO is about as weird as a guy playing a fighting game, where the character he picks is the shirtless oiled up and musclebound brawler. What does *that* say to you?

Although on IRC, I'll deliberately create confusion as to my gender rather than telling them I'm male IRL. Some interesting results tend to occur.

Horay first post ever on forums and now... I orginally made a female char 2 days ago but decided to roll a male main instead. The reason I was mistaken to be a female several times and although I got some free stuff (didnt even ask for it just "oh your new here take this"), I couldnt handle being called "doll", "cutie", "sweetness" and constantly having to say dude im a dude.
My 2 cents.
PS - Every mmo ive ever played Ive rolled a female main - cov/coh, wow, ragnarok, ffixx, and gw. Eve is the only mmo ive made a male char because of gender confusion.

Most people create their alter ego, who they wish they were etc etc....and often what they look like.
This is the BS. The char is NOT an alter-ego, it is like a fictional character puppet that does what you decide it should do.
Whether you want to role play the character or not is another issue. But if someone roleplays his other gender character this is also ok since those actions are just an opinion of a player about what his invented fictional persona would do considering player's general opinion and the selected backstory.
To clarify this even further, let us consider the literature writers.
Those people do exactly what the EVE players with multiple characters do. They create fictional characters in the fictional universe, except that the writers do also control the events in the world, while EVE players have much less control over the world.
So would you say that a male writer who has some female character in his book acting extensively, is weird as well? If yes then I would say you are weird...

Ha, so many gheys under cover here. Your avatar is mainly how OTHER players are to conceive you, a game-themed photo of yourself if you like. And you want to stare at a female toon? Is that what you do in this game - stare at your stats screen? And if it was only about staring at something pretty (and for half the female toons here - if you think that's pretty you really need your head checked) why give your toons female names and even better - why try to pretend to be female ingame, heh? If your ingame toon is the only nice feminine aspect of your life, well...
Soooo - males having female ingame avatars, giving them female names and pretending to be female ingame until they have to speak on TS/Ventrilo is "weird" to put it lightly.
If you get bored of staring at boring male business suits all day in real life do you dress in nice women's underwear so you can stare at something amusing every time you pass by a mirror at home? Makeup maybe?

Somethings are just best left unanswered.

1. I played a wookie in SWG and am also proud owner of Merseyside's Hairiest Back(tm) irl and not at all secretive about it. I'm not sure which side of the argument this comes down on
2.Isnt it obvious; the love that dare not speak it's name. Half the EVE community are obviously latex homosexuals.... possibly latent.... not sure which comes first to be honest

Liked combat the best, just played for a while, and eventually ended up with too many SP to bother rerolling. Why start again?
It became a bit more complicated when I began to RP, but being as I can tell the difference between EVE and real life, its fine.
And for the record, I am indeed weird, but playing a girl on EVE Online has absolutely nothing to do with it. :)

I created and create female avatars on virtually every mmorpg I play.
Why?
Well, let's start at the beginning of my mmorpg history. It's not terribly long, I assure you.
Chapter One. Phantasy Star Online
I create a female FO-ne-werl or whatever they were called. They were sexy-ish elven toons. The females were cute, so I thought why not.
This being on XBOX, I got bashed when I was heard talking on voice comms. "Why are you playing a girl toon if you're a guy" etc.
My response was always the same "Well, im a hetero guy who enjoys looking at a pleasing female body throughout my playtime."
Basically, I had no way to counter what they were trying to tell me which was always "Why must you constantly disappoint my potential arousal by your being a member of the male gender?"
Chapter Two World of Warcraft.
Having learned from my experience with PSO, and the constant whining from yokels with a thick US southern accent, I rolled a male toon at first. Man, I didn't like him. I loved him at first, but I rolled a female toon a week or two later, and I immediately loved her more so than my goofy male night elf.
Since then, I rolled a female human, female gnome (they are so incredibly adorable, unlike their creepy male counterparts), female COW, female night elf, female troll, and finally, a female dranei. All of them are more or less enjoyable to play as than the other, and with all of them I have no such problems admitting that I am indeed, a mangina, to put it in terms that my primary guild understands.
Chapter Three. EVE
Now here we have a situation where you are not forced to constanty stare at your body, regardless of whether or not you prefer a slender efeminite figure over a bulky masculine physique. I did not know that when I first started, so I followed my experience with WoW and created this toon. A semi-good looking, shiny blue foreheaded, female-looking human(oid?!) who looks like she has an axe to grind with her maker (in this case, me, it would seem).
After looking at the male alternatives, I have not looked back since. Do I want a portrait that has me looking at you with an oversized testosterone-injected jaw like a Civire male? No. Do I really want a portrait of some bald, white haired, Amarr Captain Picard wanna-be being the guy you look at in local as you wonder whether or not I am hostile? Absolutely no.
Now, do I want some cute (hey, I have better looking alts...) female who appeals to both myself and the majority of the playerbase, who happen to be males,? YES! Furthermore, do I want the possibility of males with less thant 20% resist against female-influence to treat me nicely simply because I *just* might be a female in real life? Maybe.
The latter point is a sad testament of the playerbase of any mmorpg, however...

Wrong. My character/avatar is how other players are to conceive my character/avatar. That should be a relatively simple sentence to understand. I've no pretensions of my character/avatar being representative of me in real life and find it quite strange that you should want to think so.
Considering everyone is anonymous until they decide to break that barrier, the position that you take - assuming an avatar is in any way representative of a player - is frankly ludicrous and no doubt leads to awkward situations. As for me, I simply don't care what gender you are in real life. My interaction with people on this game requires no knowledge of their sexual organs.
Like someone said, the avatar is something I own, not something I am.

I'm a guy and always use female avatars, and 99% of it is for one specific reason:
when playing games, why would I want to be staring at a guy all the time? I make my avatars attractive/pretty so while running along killing stuff or doing whatever I don't have to look at a guys a$$ all the time... instead I get a lovely ladies booty to take a gander at whenever it catches my eye
I have no role-playing interest in games, so I don't need to "play" a male or female, I would just rather stare at a pretty lady then a guy when mindlessly running (or flying) around... |

I'm a ... Guy In Real Life
And proud of it.
Although, I often get mistaken for a lady (except on VoIP programs such as Vent or TS), as I don't engage in the whole "e-peen" business, and tend away from "leetspeek" (except when taking the mickey out of it ). So pleeeeeease don't hit on me - it's rather unnerving, and VERY disturbing. (Happens in other MMOs too, not just EVE. WoW and Guild Wars were the most frequent occurences, as well as CoV/CoH.)
And, I don't really know why I pick female characters over males. Well, barring the almost universal constipated/inbred look of males throughout MMOs... and the fact that I have trouble coming up with names for male characters. (I refuse to use stupid names - it has to be a proper name)

Interesting topic. I think the answer is no. For me it would be impossible to play with a female avatar but thats just me. Others just do fine with it. I guess its a question of how much one can abstract from his own personality and the way he sees himself. I am pretty conditioned to be male apparently.
However it becomes weirdo once you try to pretend being female IRL. Don't you have somebody in corp who says hes female, has a female avatar and some pink bio but never shows up in TS? And if you force them into TS they are only able listen because ehhrrm the micro doesnt work, ya know?

The only excuse for a man using a female avatar is to get free stuff from other men/boys

Not that I had more success with my female avatar though, some told me she looks like some girl who just received the result of her pregnant test.
Anyway, it was just an attempt at looking 'normal'. ____________________ A gentleman is someone who can play the bagpipe, but who does not. |

I love my sexy female avatar and I also like wearing women's underwear! Next question

Thats the excuse I hear but.....
Its the face the man is trying to show the world as HIS, its a projection if his ego and that projection he is making is one of a female. Its a, hear me roar I am woman, moment.
The only excuse for a man using a female avatar is to get free stuff from other men/boys
And some people need to really lighten up in this thread A better question would be 'what kind of man feels he needs to justify to other people on the interweb his use of a female avatar'.
if I was tryign to show any projection of mine to eve world i would have placed a rl picture in my signatuure!!!
People that cannto understand that there is no relation between your avatar and yourself, really need a therapist. This is a SERIOUS mental illness.

Why should we? This is, at least last time I checked, a Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game and some of us prefer to be a female when roleplaying. Myself, I tend to have about 50/50 ratio M/F (if possible) in whatever game I play :)
I don't really see the problem.

I have to post in this thread because for a long time it was ASSUMED that I was a girl.
Fact of the matter is, I have never SAID I was a girl. I have just avoided talking about it. :) Fact is, I'm a guy. (/me dies from everyone's heartbreaks)
Thing is, you can get plenty in EVE with an attractive avatar and a person thinking with their lower workings instead of their brain. It's pretty funny. _________________ Burn. |
