My nephew showed me the game in 2004. I had never played any video games. I jumped into the game with absolutely no gaming experience (mmorpg, and or home video games). I was fascinated with the graphics. Today, I am still a noob with gobs of SPs.

Same here
I "found" EVE way too long ago to even remember WHEN it was, not how I found it. Can't remember how I got to the main site nor forums, but I got there.
Back then, I had such a slooooow and lousy internet connection, I didn't even dare download the client. Well, actually, I tried, but for some reason "resuming" was not supported, so I gave up after a few tries. Kept lurking in the forums, reading the articles and so on.
Eventually, around half year later, got a friend to download the client, tried to install it... surprise, installer verification locked at 93% on all comps. Got another friend to download it, exactly the same thing. I gave up for another half year or so, when I finally got it downloaded and installed. Surprise, surprise, there was no "free trial" back then, or at least I didn't know about it. Tried talking about payment methods, but billing was quite primitive back then, so I wound up NOT PLAYING again. Eventually, I came across (yet another half year later) upon free trial offers for EVE. Downloaded and installed the client (got a decent internet connection already back then), but my job at the time was very time consuming, so I eventually ended up not playing... but played a good deal of trial accounts, only for a very short while on each (if I actually played more than 10-12 hours out of the 14 days on any of those trials, I'd be surprised), spread across yet another half year or so.
Eventually, after a job change (including city relocation), soon after "the Bloodlines patch" (only had one other trial under "Blood" except this one), I ended up creating "Akita T", this time with the intent to keep it. And well, more than 1.5 years later after creation (and more than 3 years since I first tried to play EVE), here I still am...

Someone on another forum kept talking about how great and super EVE was and eventually, I gave up and requested a friend code.
Ironically, one month after I signed up and joined his corp, he deactivated his character because he had grown bored. It's only then that started telling about all the bad parts in the game, which he had mysteriously omitted before my registration.

In late 2005 or early 2006 I overheard a conversation at a party, where a married couple were converersing excitedly about something obscure, with lines like "they just don't get it", and, "its so funny that they are missing the whole point".
When I blindly joined the conversation, I got a raving flood of praise on how you can do "this" and "that" and be "just about absolutely anything you want" in this amazing game, and I like asked that "can you like be a bar owner or command huge space fleets" and they were like "oh yeah" and "all that and more".
...so a year or so later, after not having touched a single computer game in almost 10 years, I had the sudden urge to sign up to a MMORPG and boy was I glad that CCP had kindly arranged a free 14-day trial and you could just download the game and start playing... ..thats bout it JH

Edited by: Lavinrac Krad on 04/08/2007 08:59:39 SWG got NGE'ed and I was running around from MMORPG to MMORPG looking for a place. I was always interested in Eve, but mmorpg.com people and other third party site people scared me away with the "Eve is for those only wishing to join a guild" nonsense. What I have found in Eve is a game that is a great experience and offers a hell of a lot of freedom and depth.
I have been in Eve for over seven months and have barely explored it, that is what always attracted me to SWG, there was much to explore (if you didn't follow the boring path of the shallow J3D-3Y3 with its hollow promises).

I googled for something like "space game, massive" as i had thought of installing freelancer again but it was a little too soon for that. i was reading about some other games and had never considered a subscription game, then saw an ad for a free trial and thought, yeah why not.
so however abused the free trial system is currently, it does bring players to the game.

I was helping to play betas for a company that ccp advertised with. Even though the initial stages were bugged to hell and back (usual scenario) it was beautiful to look at. Obviously ships, space scenes gates et al all changed to a lesser/greater degree but its retained its beauty throughout. When the game went gold I continued and I rushed out to buy the disc on its day of release. Even though i've left and rejoined, ccp still seem unable to stabilise its server issues (the same since stage 2 testing), players still use macros/exploits/scams to get by, fleet warfare is impossible and mostly boring and the storyline aspects have fallen by the wayside its still the most beautiful of all the games ive played and worth every penny. ----------------------------------------------- perhaps you confused me with someone who actually gives a funk?

Noticed an ad of the two Naglfar's on the orange background towards a planet. Had memories of wanting to play a certain space game, it was either eve the boxed version, or possibly earth and beyond... but I believe it was one of the elusive boxed versions.
So, I followed the ad out of curiousity and lead to a Gamespot offer of a free trial for 14 days. That looked nice but I feared the game required a super computer to even get going due tot eh spectacular visuals...
I was wrong, so after reading sections about the game and how it worked, I gave the trial a run and after being scared to so much as leave my newb system for fear of getting lost, I got the hang of it and I was hooked.

Long ago, in a galaxy far far away...
I was playing WoW. Yes, I admitted it.
My guild was dying. We had a major drama bomb explode right on top of our heads and our egomaniacs destroyed us.
The loyal originals that remained behind, myself included, ran and maintained a website run by some kind of adserver that offered hosting services for guilds/clans/corps/cults/whathaveyou.
Every now and then when I posted on our forums to boost morale or provide a laugh or chuckle, I'd see this peculiar banner with a starship featured in some kind of spatial background, highlighted with the phrase "TRY EVE FOR FREE". Basically, it was an earlier version of the same 14-day trial banners you see every now and then on targetted websites which mmorpg players typicall visit.
So one day, after... um... some nevermind on that tangent... anyway, being burned out with WoW and the current drama that was going on, I decided to have a fresh experience with something I was intrigued by via that banner advert.
Lo and behold, I was hooked.
I was impressed immediately by the space based environment. Being a fan of spatial exploration, EVE was a + on my book for its platform immedaitely.
I was further impressed by the rookie chat. Players helping other players?! Coming from WoW, my experience with such behavior was rare at best.
What hooked me, however, was the freedom. So I feel like being bold and stupid and risking it all? I can fly into Syndicate without worrying about what the hell might be waiting for me there only to later realize, after spawning inside a station, that maybe I should worry more about EVE PvP than I do about WoW PvP.

To be honest, I'm not sure. Played in the last few days of the beta (was in college at the time)...scrounged up some money the first day it was out and have more or less been here, though with quite a few breaks in between, ever since.
Think I had heard about it from a friend...but at this point after all these years I don't really remember. ---------------------------------------------- Persona non grata |

I saw it at my local games store in 2003. I was a big fan of colony wars and looking at the pictures on the cover it looked similar so I decided to give it a go.
My first mmorpg ever, and not played anything else. (well I've tried but all the others mmo's suck)

I love this story. It was during a game of D&D, one of my friends in the group started talking about this newish game called Eve-Online and how I should get in on the ground floor because it's going to be big.
My only question was "Is there mining?". "Yes," he said, "but there's also amazing pvp combat and wars and--". I butted in at that point with "So there's mining?", to which he replied "Yeah, but you don't have to mine, there's also loads of industrial stuff and the entire market is player-driven, everything is run by players.". I replied "Mining, sweeeet" and signed up. I initially thought it was a free 30 day trial but didn't realise the original signup cost 20 quid.
Christ, that was... was that over three years ago? How old is my character?

You know, i can't remember exactly how i got into playing EVE . I'd seen it in games stores on and off since its release but i was really adverse to playing MMO's for a long while (crap PC and crap dial up). Once the PC and net access sorted themselves out, i was idly browsing over Christmas last year (bored and nothing on the telly) and i came across the free 14 day trial. DL'ed it and have not looked back since, and i've gotten a few RL mates and collegues in to playing EVE.

Picked up an issue of PC Gamer. Read one of the most amazing gaming stories I'd ever read. The fact that there was an MMO out there that allowed infiltration of "corporations." Not just any corp, player run corps. I looked it up online and found it. Played for a month or two and the combination of hard learning curve and RL money issues I quit. I played WoW for forever too long, then quit. On a whim I cranked the eve account back up and I actually understood a bit more. I started during the RMR expansion and came back in time for Revelations. It's a little different now. ;) ---

I played Freelancer, and used battleclinic.com as a resource. There was a sidebar ad for EVE, which I definitely noticed because it sometimes would cover up part of what I was reading.
Anyway, after I had reached my Freelancer apotheosis, I clicked on the ad, read about EVE, decided to try it out.
This marks a change from my two previos MMOs (E&B and FFXI), which I was introduced to by a close friend of mine. I repaid him by introducing him to EVE. ____________________________________ Caldari by birth, Minmatar by citizenship.

I wish CCP was more aggressive in their marketing.
this post wins. CCP is not doing enough BY FAR with their marketing.
EVE has barely any coverage on IGN, GameSpot or GameSpy, let alone gametrailers. I mean: who buys magazines anyway??? (a lot less peaople then a few years ago)
I decided I wanted to start playing an mmo, and scoured the net, wikipedia etc. It took me quite a while to find this. EVE is somewhat 'buried' on teh internetz as far as I'm concerned. also you guys need to pay google for a sponsored link on the words mmo and mmorpg : what I want to see in google, is that I type those words, and EVE is on top.

Read the big scam piece a while back in PC gamer I believe it was.
Didn't join just then but it was the only reason i knew that EVE existed. I just went on playing my UO.
Finally got bored of UO, there was nothing new to do and PvP is more or less dead for the most part, so I went looking for a new MMO just a few months ago.
First on the list is the game i had been watching and waiting for, Vanguard. Ummmm, enough said. That game could have been so good, but it was just managed so poorly we all later found out and was let out way before it was ready. Its pretty much bleed out now and good luck turning that car crash into a success with a relaunch. So needed a new game.
So I remembered EVE, got the demo, and signed up soon as I finished up my 14 days.

I first heard about EVE when it made /., I think, for one of the major heists, probably the GHSC one. I was heavily into SWG at the time, before it was destroyed by SOE, so I didn't look into it; also people said it was a really hardcore game and it kind of scared me off at the time.
Fast forward a while, and my amazingly talented armorsmith (there was a time when I made the best Ubese armor ever seen on the server) is now a "Trader" or some such crap, most of what I enjoyed doing was useless, and I wasn't sure what to do next. I was reading Penny Arcade and there were some EVE banner ads, which tickled my brain, so I followed them, got a 14-day trial and started this very character.
I left for a while but came back and picked up where I left off, and been having great fun. ;)
